Nothing over the top but foods just right. Honestly I wish it was closer to where I live now to go back more often. The Venezuelan coffee had the perfect level of sweetness. I love this restaurant! I love the pabellón criollo, both the plate or the pabellón criollo empanada. The arepa is delicious as well. They also have guava cheese pastelitos and tequeños! They even have chicha, a fermented red corn beer that I have yet to try. I would recommend any of these, with a cup of Venezuelan coffee. Service is fantastic. OMG!!!!!! We've lived near here for almost a year and just got around trying it. We went today and thought they were closed for a beautiful event BUT they said we could order TO-GO, perfect! We ordered a pabellon, Caribbean shredded beef and 1 Caribbean ground beef pastelito. About 20 bucks before tip, that sounds expensive right? It's totally worth it, for one they are HUGE empanadas, secondly they are absolutely stuffed with fillings, and lastly they were so fresh. I genuinely think they were made to order. The staff were also all SO KIND, so helpful and went out of their way to make our experience pleasant even for a togo order. I'm so sorry I didn't get names. The service was slow but we saw that there was only one person doing everything which is understandable if it was slow, he was really nice though, once backup came everything started to run smoothly. The food is consistent and always delicious - Venezualan coffee, variety of pastelitos, and breakfast entrees. The service is not so great. It took the staff about 15 minutes to seat us (I get it, they were busy) and another 10 minutes to come ask what we wanted. The man (don't know if he's the server or owner) was very gruff. He started asking us about our order and cut my daughter off mid order and said that he needed to get something to write the order down. He walked away and took another 10 minutes to come back. When he came back, he saw another table needing something and walked away again. Another 10-15 minutes passed and he finally took the order. The preparation was slow... we got the food 15-20 minutes after we ordered. I got up to get our own utensils and we did not get our cups of water (eventhough my daughter told the server) but we did get our coffee. We had finished the coffee way before the food came out. Afterwards, I went to the counter to pay. There was a cashier but the man came to the register and took over. He told me the total bill and I paid. When I was typing my email address into the machine for it to send me the receipt, the man just closed out the screen without telling me, and then told me that he was going to print the bill. He was rude and appeared rushed with everything. The food was good but I will not return. The first time I went was a few years ago and the service was slow as well. Love this place. We ordered a gaggle of food. Almost all of the pastelitos, a couple empanadas, and a couple arepas. My fave was the pepperoni and cheese -- the cheese is the special part. In addition, we ordered a couple guava juices, pineapple juices, and even a funky grape soda. Our food was ready in a reasonable amount of time, including the time it takes to ake the drinks. We were really excited to visit this place! My daughter had a meet at Nottingham Park and we had ear marked our visit. The food was good - my wife's Pepitos was excellent and my Arepa was outstanding. My daughter loved her first experience of pastelitos and ordered 3 of them. However, the Yuca fries were cold and overdone. The reason why we did not give five stars is because they seemed a bit overwhelmed. We noticed that they gave the avocado salsa to the other tables and forgot to give one to us. They forgot to serve water - when we asked, they brought only one glass. I actually asked for a gluten-free and dairy free pastelito option. While there was no cheese in mine, he forgot to tell me that the salsa has dairy in it. It was delicious so I still ate it :-) I will be very honest, everyone there is super nice and has a great attitude. The ambience is absolutely perfect. It is a bit pricey (though perhaps expected for the area), and the empanada lacked flavor. However I think he was confused with our order as I didn't end up receiving one of the items. It was fine, we didn't get charged and we ordered a lot food anyway. Not enough protein though. It's a very carb heavy place in my opinion. Our favorite item was the avocado chicken - Reina Pepiada Very tasty very good. I wasn't a fan of the bean and cheese Aerpa. I don't think I like the cheese they used or the way the beans were prepared. I loved the Nutella dessert. It's very small but yummy. The Venezuelan cheese stick was very good also. I'm not one for mozzarella/cheese sticks so I was pleasantly surprised. The natural juice is very natural. Wanted to give this place near our Energy Corridor neighborhood a try for brunch based on the strong Yelp endorsements. I have to say it was a very mixed bag... + The Pastelitos (their namesake) were awesome. Lovely light pastry with a tasty, moist, hot filling. We tried the Caribbean Beef (ground beef) which did not disappoint. + Criollo Breakfast - Sauteed eggs with onions and tomatoes, shredded beef, black beans and an arepa (corn cake). Overall I liked the eggs, shredded beef was good (just a bit salty for my taste), and black beans. Could have skipped the plain arepa. ~ Breakfast Combo - Choice of pancakes or waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage & fruit. We chose waffles, but found them too dense and not very crisp like a good Belgian waffle should be. Maybe pancakes might have been a better choice. Good value of you're hungry. Servers were friendly, but ours spoke hardly any English and could not get our order right... brought out over easy eggs instead of scramble in the Breakfast Combo, didn't bring salsa with our Pastelitos, no jam/honey/syrup posted with the waffles, and never explained that I could probably have chosen an arepa with a filling instead of plain for my Criollo Breakfast. They also messed up on our bill and were ringing up a la carte prices for each of our Breakfast Combo items instead of the combo price of $10.95. Today my husband brought me some big tequeños-tequeñones. A order of 3. I was super exited to eat them but to my surprise the cheese wasn't melting (they were hot) and the after taste was bitter. I guess the oil where they fried them wasn't fresh or maybe any of the other ingredients got the bitter taste. Will have to try again to see if something changes. read more
