I'm 60, a painter with a BFA from SAIC, have been an artist for 40+ years. I came to this store to…read morere-up my entire palette of Golden fluid acrylics and maybe pick up some of the new OPEN acrylics while I was at it. We were first stopped just inside the door by one friendly associate who welcomed/greeted us and recited a long menu of store specials and their back to school sale, and if we need help she's right over there at the counter for us. We were like, ok, got it, thanks! I knew what I needed and just wanted to see the colors I was buying in person, so I start shopping. Less than a minute later here's another associate, another WELCOME here's ALL our sales and our BACK TO SCHOOL SALE and if you need ANYTHING we're right over HERE by the counter! Okay, I said, thank you, that's great. I smiled and again I tried to start shopping. Another thirty seconds and here's another associate who gives me, AGAIN, the welcome/sales sales sales/we're over HERE by the cash register if you need anything! (Where ELSE am I going to go look for assistance? The deli next door at Whole Foods?) Unable to concentrate on selecting my paints, I went to give my husband the three things I had managed to pick up and was stopped by another associate who gave us both the same sales speech AGAIN. It was as though the entire shift was actively preventing me from finding the materials I was there, cash in pocket, struggling to buy. Yes, I did start getting terse and snippy when I was just repeatedly approached with the very same canned spam sales pitch by multiple ridiculously aggressive associates, because it was incredibly annoying. Maybe they thought I was shoplifting? One associate who had already given us the sales speech and apparently taken offense at my manner then approached me when I was by myself (of course) still trying to look at the Goldens. In a voice dripping with contempt, they slowly and deliberately gave me the same speech yet again. That's not creepy or confrontational, is it. Refusing to make eye contact with them, I squinted at the tube in my hands and said again, great, thanks, got it. We were in the store for maybe five minutes, seriously, for all of that. The contemptuous confrontational person came to the door while I was outside waiting for my husband, and stood with phone in hand, watching me with a little smile, seemingly texting. So on top of all that I'm sure I'm the new Karen on some sad social media site somewhere. And then we drove to the Schaumburg Blick, which is awesome with associates who are allowed to speak normally to customers and let them shop, and I bought all the rest of my paint there.

Still a great store, but uh. Guys, update your voicemail! "As we head into Covid lockdown..." Not…read moretimely!

Practical and to the point! I asked the owner how to tell my oil paintings from my acrylics. He…read moretook a look at the samples I had and made a judgement -- that fit with my own guesses. He added, "If you're going to paint over these, you could just put on a coat of Gesso, and then either oil of acrylic paint can work. Try on your least favorite old canvas first." He also knew convenient places to get the Gesso.

I'd stopped in here a few years ago with a friend who admired the artist Bev Doolittle's…read morecomprehensive artwork. She'd found out that this particular gallery had some of her paintings on display and so, we stopped in for a visit. (I suggest you google her work. It's very unique and captivating) These days, I still pass by this gallery quite often, but haven't looked inside since that day many years ago. Today I had a little extra time on my hands so I decided to pull my truck into it's parking lot and step inside once again...never a bad idea since other people's artwork often inspires me when I'm creating my own. After getting buzzed in (which surprised me a little), I was greeted by a voice in the back asking if I needed help. Seems they also have a framing business and were quite busy putting a few together. I let them know I was just looking around and went about my self guided tour...at least, that's what I would have preferred. While perusing the artwork for a minute or two, a gentleman (who I assume was the owner) joined me in my stroll and after asking what I do for a living ( I HATE that), went on to tell me that he just had his whole house painted and that it doesn't pay to do it himself anymore. I'm sorry, but I didn't stop in here to hear about other people's life stories unless it's being told to me on canvas. So I give him polite one word answers and eventually, he gets the hint and leaves me alone. Just to make sure, I move to another part of the shop. But after looking around a while, I'd noticed that there really isn't much inside. A few cool colored etchings of buildings in Germany and they still carry some of Doolittle's works (one really cool canvas of native americans riding straight towards the viewer in full war paint called "Beyond Negotiations"), but not much else. To be honest, the place is a little unorganized and cluttered, but I can't say what it's cluttered WITH since there's really not a lot of artwork. If I was really in the market for some paintings, I'd probably be disappointed and not return. I guess that sums up my review, too. Leaving and not wanting to return kinda says it all, don't you think? I'm afraid two stars is all I can muster for Evergreen Gallery. Sorry about that, folks...I left uninspired.
