I am giving you 0 stars for lying to your costumers. I called and asked if they had a used 16 inch boy's bike. They said yes, a Precaliber Trek for $115. When I was there in less than 20 minutes, they tried to sell me new bikes and when I insisted to buy the one that we talked about on the phone, they told me that they had just sold it. It is so obvious that nobody else could have bought the bike within 20 minutes. They lied to make me come in, so they could sell me sth more expensive. And all that happened with a 5 yr old on my side, who was excited to get a bike. Shame on you!! read more

This is a wonderful bike shop. The service department is helpful and kind. I have had them do large and small fixes, they explain what they are going to do and keep you in the loop. Like all great shops, they treat your bike like the prized possession it is. A few of the great events they support! 1. First Saturday of the month Bike maintenance class. 2. I received an email advertisement from Pasadena Cyclery for a discount on a bicycle tune up. After taking the bicycle to the shop, I was told that they are no longer honoring their own advertisement because they have enough customers. It has been less then a week since I had received the email, and within the time frame of their advertised deal. Would it not be a normal business practice to honor their own advertisement? It is disappointing as I had purchased 3 bicycles from them in the past and was planning to buy another for my growing son. I made and appointment to bring my bike in for wheel lock removal. I arrive and call and they tell me to come right in. As I approached the door a very large surly man with a ponytail tells me "we're closed". I mention that I was told to come right in and he ignores me. Ok fine no big deal. I wait until I'm motioned in and take the bike to the service shop. I tell the dewd my problem. He looks at me like I'm an idiot " no we don't do that here I emailed you" I say no you did not email me is there anything you can do. Well we can cut them off but it might damage the bike frame I can't help you. I say can you recommend a place I could get it done? No it's not my thing I don't no. Basically with a tone that suggests I'm a fucking moron and get the fuck out of here. I know I am an idiot for loosing they keys to the wheel locks but I don't need to have my face rubbed in it. I step outside and a guy comes up to me and says"They couldn't fix it?" And proceeds to give me the number of a place where it could be fixed. I was thinking about buying a bike from them but not now. If you want to be helped by a bunch of surely large seemingly burnt out gentlemen with bad pony tails who dont give a damn then this is thg place for you. Otherwise I would avoid it. read more

We stopped by this place today to fix a tire on my little eight year old friend's bike. They were so wonderful and took her bike right away and fixed her tire and even fixed where her tire was rubbing against her fender (thank you, Marcus). They were quick and helpful and nice. Came here the other day after being recommended by a friend, for some spare tubes and new pump, got some good help there, no problem. Problem came when I needed to get some service on my bike. I'm a newbie and readily admit it, I don't know how to true a wheel properly so I brought it in so an expert could handle it. Maybe the guy didn't like that I don't ride a $4000 road bike but an ordinary commuter bike. Maybe he didn't like the fact that I don't really know how to fix my own stuff yet. Maybe he thinks people like me shouldn't ride so that only real hardcore roadies can own the streets. None of this warranted his comment to the guy behind him, loudly and in front of my face, "You know how I said today was gonna be a bad day? Well it just got worse." It's that kind of attitude that slows the adoption of cycling in this city by newbies. It's that kind of attitude that ensures that your store will never get my business again. But that wasn't enough. You grudgingly fixed my wheel and adjusted my brakes. I paid and left. As I rode off, coasting down a slight hill, I noticed I was decelerating rapidly. DOWNHILL. I look and I noticed that you had "fixed" my back brakes in such a way that they were on all the time. A person who knows how to true a wheel does not screw up brakes unintentionally. I might not know much but I know how to adjust my own brakes and they were in a lot better shape before you messed them up. If that's some kind of a practical joke just because you're having a bad day, I will not be back and neither, I hope, will anyone else who reads this. And I'm sure in your elitist cloud you're happy with that. Go to hell. read more

I am a late bloomer when it comes to bicycle riding... but it's not my fault! My uncle tried to teach me as a child and magically ended up pushing me into a tree... Then in college I tried to learn again and ended up with a huge scar on my forearm after falling into gravel... so it has taken me a while to get to the point where I was willing to purchase a bicycle for myself. I took an adult bicycle class riding class (yes, they do have those and no, I am not ashamed). I wasn't really sure what I wanted in a bike (gears, speeds, material, etc.) but knew that I wanted a bike that I was comfortable sitting on and more importantly a bike that was right for my level of cycling (meaning, I could put my feet down when I got scared). The staff at Pasadena Cyclery were super patient and helped educate me on the basics, they were able to help me select a bike that was a bit more advance than what I was looking for and I am so grateful that they did. I love riding my new bike and can proudly say that I have been "taking the lane" on my own around Pasadena. My bike is beautiful and while it is a little pricey, did not break the bank. After making the rounds at the local bike shops, I have had the best experiences at Pasadena Cyclery. I've brought my mountainbike in for routine service multiple times, and they've always done a great job addressing specific questions and requests in addition to the regular tune ups. While at other local shops I've felt like they've dismissed my questions/requests or given me attitude because 1. I'm a woman 2. I'm a new rider, I've consistently been treated well at Pasadena Cyclery. In fact, they actually have women on staff here. I've seen people bring in their walmart bikes, cruisers, children's bikes, old beaters, and high end bikes for service- everyone gets equal attention and time. Outside of routine maintenance, they've been happy to tweak little issues on my bike for little or no cost. The people here have also given me really good advice on parts and accessories and are happy to special order items. The women's clothing section has also gotten much better with a nice selection of Fox jerseys. On the mountain bike side, they carry Trek, Gary Fisher, and Foes in the shop. read more

I'll round up and stick with the 5-star trend. I visited competing Performance Bicycles on Arroyo and it was OK; Performance was slightly more expensive. I recently moved to the area and was in dire need of a good bike shop. Why wasn't I surprised when my Yelp-Help pointed me to excellent Pasadena Cyclery? and SCORE...it was a short bike ride from home. So my experiences have been pretty cool. The first time I went was for a bike storage solution. This one person said to save my money and get those cheap $1 bike hooks -- that's what they use. My second visit was on a Saturday for some inexpensive gloves, picked up a map, got biking trail suggestions, and some info on the local MTB club (http://www.pmbc.org). I put my recent trail knowledge to use that afternoon...so far so good! read more

This shop bums me out. I want to like it because it truly is my local shop. About 2.5 miles from home with good parking and easy access. They are the closest Trek dealer to me which is meaningful because that's what my kids ride. Trek has a great trade up program where when the kids outgrow the bike the company will actually give you money toward a new Trek. Got a $100 on a trade in which feels unheard of for a used kids bike! That's the good. The bad... Service here can just be god awful. I know this is a family owned shop. Has been for years. That's usually a plus. Depends who you talk to and what mood they're in... Apparently. I've been everything from ignored to just given the stink eye. I am in my 40's. I talk the bike shop talk. I know product and am an avid rider. The vibe here is the worst part of the shop. And that's too bad. Of all the shops in a 20 mile radius this is my last resort shop. They carry mostly Trek and Gary Fisher, road and mountain bikes, respectively. Mosy accessories are Bontrager. A Shimano mainstream product selection. No Campy if that's your thing. This place was glowing in Lance Armstrong's heyday before his downfall. Not a lot of product in stock. Can catch a decent sale now and then. One mechanic tried to tell me some incorrect Information about sealing a road tubeless tire. He insisted I needed an additional liner to seal the tire which wasn't true since it was a tubeless ready rim with Stan's tape. He couldn't get it to seal but instead of saying that he argued that I needed to purchase other parts to make it work. Then sent me away with a surly Good Luck. Nice. Maybe it's not for me but friends have also told me independently that the vibe in this shop sucks. Recently a bicycle magazine ranked them as a top shop. Came here to get a new pair of cycling shoes for my spinning classes.... For all those out there who haven't taken spinning, it is def a intense workout and you should try it. Cycling shoes will give you a better workout than regular tennis shoes. It is a good thing to invest in if you decide to spin alot. Terrible Shop! I bought two bikes from there about 3 years ago. I had never needed to take them in for service until now. So, I took my bikes there and they told me that there were no discounts on service even though I bought my bike from them. They also said there was an $8 per tire labor charge for tube and tire replacement. I clearly remembered from when I bought my bike that they told me that I would get discounts on service and that they would not charge labor for bike/tube replacement. After locating my paperwork that stated this, they agreed to give me the discounts and tire replacement at no labor charge. I went to pick up my bikes two days after the day they were supposed to be ready. They then came back to tell me that they hadn't even started on one of my bikes and that I needed to come back later for it. I wasn't too unhappy because these things happen. I agreed to pay for the bikes and come back later to get the second. When I went to pay, I noticed that the bill was too high. After looking over the paperwork I saw that I got my service discount, but they still charged me $16 labor to replace my tires. I had even asked the service writer to make sure about the discounts before I got to the cashier and he said that he had already applied them. Clearly he didn't. So, I get the bikes home and I take them for a test ride. They hadn't adjusted them properly. The brakes were totally off and the pads were rubbing on the rim. The other bike was full of squeaks and needed to be properly lubed. The shop was already closed, so I couldn't take the bikes back. I wound fixing them myself because I needed them for the next morning. That was basically $150 wasted. I will never be going back there again. read more

I'm thankful for having my tire serviced here and thats about it. The older gentleman who fixed my tire was extremely rude. He went from nice with the previous customer to mean with me in a split second. I don't know where it came from, but the rude treatment was definitely present. He made the assumption that all I needed was air in my tire. I had to correct him twice that I needed a new tube. Long story short, I paid the man and left with a new tube. Call it grumpy old man syndrome, call it a bad case of a Thursday, but I absolutely didn't appreciate his attitude. read more

Although I did not buy my road bike from them i have to say this shop is very friendly and has nice selection of bikes. When I told him he was extremely rude he told me to have a nice day. Two workers in the store did nothing when I alerted them of his attitude. Been here a dozen times, but only my latest experience motivated me to write a review about the shop. Took my mountain bike to another shop in the area. They kept if for five days, completely screwed up the shifting and did a crappy brake pad replacement. Then they refused to refund my money and claimed I was cheating them out of the service they did. I gave them the finger, told them they lost my business for life, and that I would pray that the lamentations of their women would keep them up at night with horrors of grandeur. Brought it into Pasadena Cyclery, they fixed the bike like new while I waited. The staff can be slightly rude, and ignore you for what feels like forever, but when they get their hands on your bike they work with you and walk you through the process, they make suggestions without being pushy. Bringing my road bike in next time for service, if they do a good tune up, I may consider getting their logo tattooed on my chest. Okay maybe not, but I'll still stop by often. read more

This review is for the Service Department. Took my bike to Pasadena Cyclery after getting my bike serviced at a Big Bike Shop (It who shall not be named). To make a long story short, I purchased a cassette and chain at this BBS because they have a good inventory and sales pretty much every week. Where I went wrong was having it installed at the same shop to try and save time. They totally messed up the installation.. after a couple of rides my chain broke going uphill and I almost injured myself but luckily I was able to clip out before falling to the side. So I went to Pasadena Cyclery and the mechanic was able to quickly diagnose what was wrong and get me back up and rolling in a few hours. Now my bike runs very smooth, gears change smoothly and no more clicking! read more

I've been here several times and actually signed back onto Yelp just because I had to say how awesome they are. (Fair warning: I am terrible at remembering names, hence "the guy", but seriously: I've dealt with four different people over my visits and they've all been terrific.) We showed up as two clueless grown-ups who hadn't been on a bike since high school and were welcomed with open arms. Everyone I've dealt with there has been great. I know perfectly well I've asked some stupid questions but you never would have known it from their reactions. They so clearly want to share their passion with others, so if you feel clueless or intimidated at starting or getting back into riding (as I did)--come here and they'll take great care of you. My wife and I bought bikes, and when hers just didn't work for her they took it back and exchanged it for a better fitted model, no problem. Then my bike sat for two months between first purchase and first ride (that's moving house in the summer heat for you) and I could tell something just wasn't right. I so I showed up the other morning and basically just said "help!" Turns out I hadn't figured out the gears yet, (apparently twist gears are imprecise) and the guy showed me how to shift smoothly on my bike and how to tell--by sight and sound--when they were working and when they weren't. Also I'd apparently put the front wheel (removable to get it in and out of the back of the car) back on *backwards*. So he showed me what the gears were doing, helped me establish what the real settings actually were, explained how to tell which way to face the wheel (it had never even occurred to me that it mattered!), and showed me the best way to use a U lock on my bike (the frame is further from the front wheel than most, so the standard way I'd seen it done didn't work. He gave me two options--the quick and the secure, depending on circumstance :) I thought the front tire might be low. It was, but the rear tire was actually leaking badly. He showed me how to eyeball (or, rather, thumb test) the tire pressure. Then he charged me $14 to change the tire. ($6 tube/$8 labor). I left it there for the 10-min fix, drove back home, then got my wife to drop me off again at the shop so I could check it out by riding the bike home (almost exactly a mile from the new house). Since the first guy had offered to put the bike lock mounting on if I had it with me, I brought back that and the kickstand I'd gotten off Amazon and asked the (different) guy who was in the shop when I made it back if he could put them on for me. Turns out the stand was missing the proper mount for my bike and was too long. And had no rubber foot for the end. Fortunately he had a spare mount and foot, and, after getting it on once, took it back off, took it in the back to cut a 1/4 inch off the end, and then put it back on. He also found a way to mount the lock on an awkward frame. All told he must have spent more than 20 mins there putting the stuff on (which I hadn't even bought from them), noticing something slightly off on the rear brakes, tweaking it, checking over everything, making sure it was perfect, etc., and then handed it over. I asked how much I owed him and he waved me off. Seriously, I actually argued with him for a moment. Now I happen to know that bike shops make most of their money on everything *but* the actual bikes (apparently the margin on those is, like, paper thin), and they've been awesome, and I want to support them, but I also still feel poorer than I actually am and hence I had wanted to get some things on a slightly better deal off Amazon (bike lock, kickstand). Never again. Hell, for everything they did for me today? I would have pegged $50 as a perfectly reasonable price. I paid $14, for a good 40 mins of expert advice and labor (and $6 of that was for the actual tire tube!). I figure by any sane measure I owe them at least $35 already... and that doesn't even count the level of service and general awesome of a guy working in a professional bike shop (clearly most of their clients are experienced amateurs, if not not semi-pros) telling me I'd managed to put the friggin' wheel on backwards without making me the slightest bit embarrassed about it. And I rode home just fine. [Granted, it's 90% slightly downhill that direction, but, hey... I no longer feel like an idiot just walking near the bike. :)] ETA: They offer a free beginner basics class once a month; I've already got the next one underlined three times on my calendar. :) read more

I took my mt. bike to the Cyclery three weeks ago for screeching disk brakes. Ten days later I picked it up and paid $10 for the repair (great deal, right?), but then rode it half-a-block outside the store and realized the problem persisted. It was not a hidden or intermittent problem, it sounded like a tornado siren every time the brakes were applied. I took it back in and they agreed to look at it again and call me in a day or so. I went back in two days - nobody knew much about my bike and the paperwork was lost (allegedly it fell under a work bench). Eventually, the mechanics got into the right gear, identified the problem (the brake pads were corroded), and made the fixes a week later. Out of full disclosure, they didn't charge me anything else - so I got a good deal, ignoring the opportunity cost of not having my bike for that time and the hassle. Thus, I'm not entirely sour, but, really, a professional bike shop should get these things right the first time. The mechanics and customer service are hit or miss. Today, all the people I talked to were very helpful and knowledgeable, showing me a few tricks, and getting me a few accessories that I wanted. I'm currently in the market for a new road bike and will probably look elsewhere - too many bike shops in the area to settle for less than stellar. read more

Not sure why I'm even giving them two stars, they did a horrible job on my bike. Brought my one year old Trek bike in for a tuneup, and had to go back twice because my brakes lines on the bike were disconnected- this tells me they didn't even test drive it before releasing it to me, not good! Since, my bike has never worked well. At times, it doesn't shift right, and I'm lucky if I can even get up a hill. Granted, I guess I should've brought my bike in for a third time and demanded a refund, or even to have them finish the job, but I just didn't want to hassle it- three times is three strikes out, time to move on. I don't think I'll be back, and I would not recommend this bike shop. read more

I wanted to visit a Trek dealer on my lunch break. I knew the model I was interested in, but wanted to test it in my size. When i walked in, the price was reduced to make room for 2015 models. Wielding a credit card, I knew I was going to do something dumb... Anyway. The people behind the counter were very helpful. The sales person who helped me was very knowledgeable about the bike, the local trails and all around the sport in general. This made me feel like I was back at my local shops in PA (and not the typical chain store staff lacking "cycling blood" or basic technical understanding). It helps to know the people you buy from ride often. I witnessed sales with an older person new to cycling, and I was impressed by the lack of snobby attitudes. Seeing this rounded out my visit. Long story short, I bought the bike. I was happy with the attitudes, knowledge, patience, and all around friendliness of everyone I encountered. read more

After having a few bad experiences at a big bike shop in hollywood ( hint it starts with "i"). They other bike shop told me my wheel was shaking because I needed my spokes tuned. After that spent $16 bucks it still had a little shimmy and even suggested I might need to replace the rim!! It was racked on my friends car and while up at Pasadena I decided to drive it by Pasadena Cyclery. After having them look at the rim. It ended up being a deformed tube! Dont take your bike here to get repaired. They don't cover the basics of the basics of a simple tire repair. They never showed me that the tire was ok before putting a new inner tube in. Tire with thorn got re punctured on a 1 min test ride due to thorn never being removed. Then refused to replace it at cost. If I was shown by the technician that the inside tire was free of thorns then they are covering their bases. They have no such check point. That is the difference between customer service and absolutely none! - update. I went to performance bike on arroyo and the inner tubes are thick not thin and flimsy like what was put on my bike. I would estimate about 30% thicker material at performance compared to this shop. read more

Sudden urge to review all the bike shops around town. Let's start with the place I bought my bicycle at. Pasadena Cyclery. Bikes - This place carries Trek and Gary Fisher bikes. They are made by the same manufacturer but under different names. I personally bought a Trek because the frame had a "modern" look. Price - You definitely will spend more at a bike shop than at Walmart. However, the quality of product and service you get will be unsurpassed. The pricing at PC is mid-to-high. I would say they overcharge for certain items (bike lights!!). The best time to buy is when they have their pre- or post- summer sales, which generally knocks prices down 20-25%. Staff - Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Countless times they've provided good advice, ranging from maintenance to which bike rack fits my car to where to ride. Plus, they're good giving a "hook up" with discounts if you visit often. Accessories - Not as many accessories as Performance Bikes. They carry mostly Trek stuff. Overall - Four stars because my biking adventures started here. read more

I don't ride as much as I used to, but they've always done a wonderful job for me here at Pasadena Cyclery. I bought my Trek 5000 here in 2004, and the staff were painstaking about fitting me onto the bike and teaching me how to get the most out of a remarkable machine. Not a great selection of bike clothing, but the advice is solid and sensible. One of the best things about Pasadena Cyclery is that when I expressed interest in a more expensive bike than the Trek 5000, the salesperson discouraged me and pointed me to T5000 as better suited to me. read more

Went here on a very hot day. I was riding to work when I felt that My rear tire was loosing a little air. I looked up the closest bike shop around me and I ended up here. From the time I came in, the people working there were so nice. I asked if can buy some air from them and I was directed to the service center. The guy there was very nice and helpful and he lent me the pump to put air in my tire. He told me that i was welcomed there anytime and that there is always free air service there. I went in there tonight to get more information on bikes and they were so helpful! I am looking to get a bike that I can use to commute to work (just 4 - 5 miles round trip) but also something I could use on easy trails (not mountain biking). Michael is very nice and explained the bike types they had and the benefits to each kind. It was super helpful and I was able to test ride several to see which I liked. His help allowed me to quickly narrow down which kind of bike type I would want for my needs. I just walked in to get my wheel trued. The mechanic took a look at it and was able to true it in 10 minutes. They didn't charge me a dime! Since I bought my bike there a few years ago they just decided to toss that in the "free adjustments" category.. Like so many LBSes, Pasadena Cyclery is hit and miss. I've had some really helpful people at Pasadena Cyclery, and some that really don't make it. So, three stars. I bought a Trek road bike at this shop, and got a fairly good deal on it a couple years ago (a model year close-out). The bike had some pretty serious problems on both derailleurs, most notably the front, which frequently threw the chain off the large chainring. After a couple weeks I took it back, and the guy who fixed it apologized saying that whoever set it up originally (at the shop) had done it completely wrong. They fixed both derailleurs in-warranty, but it wasn't very comforting. Fast forward a few months and I bring the bike in for a check-up. I get a call and the tech informs me that I need a new chain and cassette. Really? Yeah he says. Wow, I only have about a thousand miles on it... oh he says, you're lucky you got a thousand. A lot of chains go out after 500 miles on these kind of bikes, and you should always replace the cassette when you replace the chain. OK, so I replace it... I'm new to high-mileage biking. But it never felt quite right. Well yesterday I did my second chain replacement, at another bike shop. That chain (same make and model as the OEM chain) had over 2,500 miles on it, and the tech at the other shop tried to talk me out of replacing it because he felt it had some mileage left (I wanted a new chain for a tour I'm doing in a few weeks). He recommended I not touch the cassette, which I didn't. This second shop is hardly perfect... but the tech at PC either didn't know what he was talking about, or was ripping me off (I lean toward the first option).
