I tried Parlor Coffee for the first time during their pop up with Tonchin Ramen in Williamsburg and holy sh*t I was so unexpectedly impressed. The only coffee they had on the menu was cold brew and I'm not usually a fan of it as I've found most cold brew that I've tried to be way too overpowering and strong. However, Parlor Coffee's cold brew is the perfect balance between tastefulness, strength, and smoothness I've ever had. The cold brew also has a very subtle hint of dark chocolate which compliments the body of the coffee so well. I have yet to try this Prospect coffee but I couldn't wait to make this post about it first! The staff member in attendance was also unbelievably friendly and is a massive reason why I'm writing this post. Would highly highly recommend this delicious coffee to anyone. read more

Dare I say this is the best coffee in town? Yes, yes I dare! It's so rare to find a coffee joint that can serve up a slammin' cup of joe AND have personable staff that knows their black gold PLUS willing talk the day away with the public. Parlor is warm and welcoming, so different compared to many of the other coffee shops I've went to in my life. I cannot get enough of the impeccable service, fresh coffee, and simple yet cool layout. If I lived any closer I would be getting my daily caffeine boost here, and possibly overdoing it because I will not be able to stay away. My friend works in the Navy Yard, but only on week days. Parlor Coffee is only open Sundays. Confused? Don't be. Parlor Coffee sells their beans to restaurants, cafes, etc, so they roast and brew all week, and on Sundays, they can open to the public to taste coffee. Is it a coffee shop? Maybe not. Think of it as a brewery - you come to see how it's made, meet the brewers, and learn how to taste. Tasting is called "Cupping". You, and a few other people who have stopped in, get to smell the ground beans. Chocolaty, earthy...one smelled almost like a tomato! They then pour hot water over the grounds, and let it simmer. You can smell different notes while you wait. I won't divulge all their secrets, but it's like a wine tasting. And it's free! You can order coffee to drink if you want, ands it at the bar and sip. Delicious. The staff was hospitable, open, and awesome. They clearly care about their product and are excited to share it with the public. Rumor has it they're trying to open to the public Mondays as well. Can't wait to see what happens!! And I hope to see you guys in Boston :) read more

My new favorite roaster. And 100% local! Unlike other albeit great roasters like Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Toby's, etc who roast in NY but are based elsewhere. Where to find Parlor around town? Bluebird East Village is 100% Parlor now, Box Kite East Village rotates Parlor, Culture Espresso Midtown rotates too, plus of course the 100% Parlor pop-up in that Williamsburg barbershop on Havemeyer. Every Sunday at 3 they do free cuppings. If you're lucky they usually roast the same day. Aaron leads the sessions while Dylan the owner leads the roasting and pops over often to chat. Love the uniform of comrade-esque green khaki jackets and woolen hats! Sure this place is in the middle of nowhere. But it's worth coming to chat, taste, support a great local business and maybe take home a few bags. read more

What a gem. From what I can tell, it's primarily a roasting location that they're kind enough to open to the public for four hours on Sundays (with a cupping tutorial in the last hour). They really value their coffee beans and their subtle flavors. Because of that, they only serve their coffee black. Don't expect to find sugar or cream/milk here (you can get your coffee to go, though). No cold brew, either. And I admire and respect them for that. Much like an artist, they're not catering to the wider public. Rather, they are here to do what they do, for people who truly love coffee. It sounds snobby, but they're not that way at all. The coffee they serve you is poured over in a Chemex, although they do sell Aeropresses and other brewing accessories and machinery). You can also buy bags of their whole beans as well. In terms of seating, if you're not here around 3-4 (their cupping time), you can sit at the bar. They also have a little seating space at the front of the store. read more

I first had this cup of coffee at Petee's Pies on Myrtle and loved it so much I signed up for a monthly subscription. Now I start my day with the best cup of coffee at home. The coffee is okay but baristas are extremely pretentious. I just waited 15 minutes to get served wile waiting for the barista to end his conversation about coffee grinder parts instead of even acknowledging my presence standing directly in front of him at the register. I dismissed the first time this happened as an anomaly but now realize it's evidently a company attitude or ethos. I ended up walking out in pure frustration while the barista continued yapping away about theoretical coffee grinders completely indifferent to the growing line behind me. I would not be surprised if the other patrons ended up leaving as well. One star. read more

Nice hidden roastery that serves some great coffee. Just pop right in on a Sunday, get any of their weekly roast blends and hang out with their neighbor's cat that sometimes walk into the place. I always leave the place with a box of their whole beans. read more

Went to the public coffee cupping at Sun at 3p and it was alright. The guy didn't really talk through each coffee. The guy poured hot water into the 3 cups for the 6 coffees. Each visitor had a spoon to try a sip of coffee (or more), and "cleaned" it by dipping into hot water for their next try. It's unsanitary or I am just confused about coffee culture. The roasting location itself is pretty neat and the bathroom is clean! read more

Parlor is undoubtedly the top coffee roaster in NYC. While they have limited hours in the tasting room/roastery, what you will get is incredibly knowledgeable and kind staff in addition to exemplary coffee. The bar in the roastery is seats about 10 people, but there is plenty of standing room for larger groups. The roasting and packaging can be seen from a few feet away and staff is happy to discuss what is going on and characteristics of the roast. The coffee itself is also outstanding and expertly roasted. Various roasts are available to try as drip, espresso, or cold brew. There is also a selection of coffee to buy as well as some coffee brewing devices and accessories. Be sure to swing by on Sundays for a very unique but great coffee experience in Brooklyn. read more

I have been doing business with this company for a few years now. Their attention to customer service, quality and education are second to NONE! These people are truly of the "salt-of-the-earth" variety. You would be hard pressed to find a better coffee company to do business with. Try to visit them on Sunday when they are open to the public to enjoy the ambiance of their roasting facility, their passion for their trade and the quality of their coffee. Worth a trip! read more

I start every day with a cup of Parlor. If there is a better roast out there, I don't know what it is. Unless you prefer a really dark roast, in which case I fundamentally don't understand you as a person and what you stand for. I've only been to a cupping session one time, but it was delicious and the staff was friendly and eager to talk about their product. read more

I haven't been to the tasting room yet but am a member of their subscription program. I first had a taste of Parlor Coffee at Black Press Coffee in Manhattan. I ended up buying a bag of beans to make pour over at home which I really enjoyed, and shortly thereafter signed up on their website for a monthly home shipment. The subscription model has changed somewhat since I first signed up earlier this year. Currently it offers a great deal of flexibility with respect to the number of bags you receive and how often, and you can cancel at any time. The prices did increase compared to when I first signed up earlier this year, so now it ends up being $16-20 a bag depending on the number of bags you get--admittedly kind of steep especially because the bags are on the smaller size (8 oz. compared to the usual 12 oz. at most places). However they were kind enough to provide a discount code for old subscribers applicable through the end of the year, and I'm pretty sure I will just continue even when I have to pay full price next year because it's just totally worth it. Every month I get a shipment with two different bags of freshly roasted beans to enjoy, and because I signed up for the "Roaster's Choice" it's always a fun surprise to see what I get. My favorites thus far has been the Guatemala Pulcal and the Colombia Frontera de Acevedo, but really I haven't gotten one yet that I don't like.
