Kitten has now landed at Throop & Fulton! Just a week or so ago. Right near the subway. Tiny little counter but great for a coffee to go, especially before you grab the C train. Awesome espresso here. Usually the Brazil blend but sometimes they switch to the Ethiopian. Fruity and chocolatey. Plus if want sip your coffee to stay, they're very happy to oblige. Staff is great. Love the loyalty cards! Super busy on weekends, especially on a hot day. Better be patient or come early! read more

BOOM! My mind is blown! One simple act turned this potentially 2 stars into 4. They were out of chai...again...BUT the really cool guy who runs the place suggested something I had never heard of...Maple Latte. Lordt! I've been delivered. It's my new thing. Instead of using a chai tea he made a black tea steamer and added 100% pure maple syrup for sweetness. Yeah. It's a thing now. You've heard it here and you'll hear it there too. Just go. And on a side note...I'm ecstatic that there's a coffee shop near my train. read more

Best coffee in the neighborhood by FAR with the nicest barista and fresh, homemade croissants every morning. I stop by every morning and usually I can even get a warm croissant right out of the oven...! Only complaint is that there used to be such cool music in the morning playing from old cassette tapes (Cars, Violent Femmes, etc) -- it really set up my day perfectly. On a recent ride all the way from Bushwick to Ft Greene, I had some extra time on my hands, and this fine spot was right at the top of my coffee list. Why not stop by? Dekalb has a nice bicycle lane most of the way so it's comfortable, and fairly safe riding. Heading into the neighborhood of Pratt, I turn onto Skillman. Not avenue like in East Williamsburg, but Street as in Bed Stuy. Here you have rough blocks with warehouses & liquor stores, then shining brownstone blocks that remind you of those gorgeous little corners of new york. Skillman has a bit of both, with a couple of new buildings to boot. Riding down the street I see nothing in the way of a cafe. I cross Willoughby, still nothing. I back track, and zero in on the building number. Still no sign of a cafe. Perhaps I have the wrong boro or the wrong street, or number. I check all these, and confirm this is the real spot. Still nothing. I look at the garage door, and see what looks like it might be a kitten stenciled on there, and think, well perhaps they're not open today. I try the door, and what do I find it's open. I peer in and ask if they're open. Sure the guy says. Ummm... are you a cafe? Oh no, we're a roastery. But you're welcome to come in and have a cup of coffee! So thus begins my introduction to this fine new roastery in Brooklyn. Rowen proceeds to grind some, while we talk about New York coffee. I tell him on a recent trip to Malaysia I found all the good coffeeshops were run by Aussies and Kiwis. Yep, he said, you'll find the same in London too. He explained that what we call the third wave coffee phenomenon hit down under about 15 or more years ago. Wow, that explains it. The shot he pulled was 100% crema, I felt like I had found the place where coffee was created. As I sipped at the shot, I marveled at the taste, and asked him, I'd almost say that there's a taste of chocolate in there. Yep, that's what we do! Turns out they teach barristas here, how to pull a shot of espresso, and all the ins and outs of coffee made to order. Cool, I think I'll come back for one of those classes even though I have never barristad before. These guys are super friendly, and very welcoming. I'm generally not a coffee drinker, but Kitten is so rich, it almost tastes like chocolate! When I make it with my french press, it's almost creamy and a little frothy -- I don't even add milk! (Usually my coffee is just a vehicle for the milk.) I work for a theatre and we started serving Kitten to our donors. The compliments keep rolling in. The bottom line: Brooklyn pride! Kitten Coffee is far and away the best bean in New York City. Don't be suckered by the PR machines of corporations like Intelligentsia or Stumptown. They pale in comparison. There is simply no love in those beans. Kitten Coffee is pure love, pure quality. My only complaint is that their beans aren't more easily available. I hope people in New York become better educated to coffee. It's a shame that lesser quality beans, sold too long after they're time for too high a price are allowed to pass for high quality product. In a city that demands nothing but "the best" in so many aspects of culture, it is time for us to demand that our coffee (and the person making our coffee) is of the highest quality, too. Took a barista class here the other day and it was flippin' awesome. The owner guy, Rowen, was extremely laid back and informative. He has a cool little space in Bedstuy with a mock kitchen set up and teaches you all you need to know to be the best around. I learned all kinds of shit, not to mention had some of the best espresso I've ever had. You wanna learn how to make the good stuff or just have a cup of the good stuff, get involved with the Kitten. The coffee is delicious and I love that it's right next to my subway stop. But what I can't deal with is the inconsistent hours (closed randomly and no note saying when it would reopen). I also don't understand why you all struggle so much with finding tops to match the cups? Seems weird. read more

The place is cool and I like that it's not a sit and hang out all day spot (cause you can't, there are no seats.) It's on my way to the train and it used to be my second coffee stop of the morning. They used to play cool music, and I honestly used go in there mainly to have a morning 'hello' with one of the baristas who worked there, and now I don't think they work there anymore! Bummer! But they have pretty good coffee, and it's cool to find out they're a roaster too, but I took off a star for inconsistency of hours. There are some days I walk by, and they're just straight up closed. Worth giving them your business though. read more

In a nutshell, don't go here. This is not a review about the coffee, but the ethic and attitude of the place. I stopped in to grab a croissant when running late to a job. I had been avoiding it bc one, I'm not really a coffee shop person to begin with, and two, it absolutely gave off a gentrifier vibe. Boy was I right. As a young white person living in a mostly black neighborhood, I am often seen as a gentrifier or out-of-towner. (I've lived here for two years now.) I don't feel that I am due to my financial circumstances and politics, but that doesn't matter to most people, and other out-of-towner whites usually assume I am of their opinion/persuasion and think they can "confide" in me. I guess that's what happened here bc the man working (not the owner) actually had the gaul to call my neighborhood "ghetto" and said he doesn't trust the food around here. "I live in Clinton Hill, so I guess I'm spoiled," he added. I was flabbergasted, and all I could manage was an "I like this area. There's plenty of options." I should have told him to stay in Clinton Hill. read more

Love the coffee but they're never open! I take the 7:25am C train into Manhattan from Kingston Throop and love to get a cup on my way to work but it's a hit or miss as to if they'll be open. Skip these guys and go to Bohaus or Anchor: both just a few blocks away. I saw this place open in the past few weeks and was excited to try it but I usually make my coffee at home. Today mine was weak so I poured it out figured I'd give this place a shot on my way to work. I just walked by and the door was open and they were inside. I said, "are you guys not open yet?" And got the quick reply: "We open at 8 on the weekend, I don't know, is it 8?!" I checked my watch and walked away. I'd rather get $1 bodega coffee than have to talk to people like that before I've had coffee. read more

Delicious!!! Their beans make amazingly delicious coffee and espresso and the owner is super friendly and knowledgeable. The first time I went in there, the owner gave me some very helpful tips on how to make a perfect cup of espresso. On another visit, he actually showed me on google maps where the beans came from. This friendly service is in addition to their wonderful coffee beans. The flavor is perfect. It is my favorite coffee that I have tried -- and I've tried a lot of different types!
