After a run at Prospect Park this past Saturday morning, we stopped by Villager for coffee. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised upon walking in since I saw their wall of beans for sale. They carry beans from DAK Coffee Roasters, which is one of my favorite roasters from Amsterdam, along with Sey Coffee and other roasters known for their high-quality beans. I grabbed a bag of DAK beans, which came with a free single-origin drip. It was honestly great for drip -- clean, not watery, and nicely fruity and juicy. It was pretty busy, so I skipped the pour-over this time, but I'd definitely come back to try it on a calmer time of the week. If I'm looking to stock up on good beans, I know I'll be back at Villager. read more

I spotted it quickly because there was already a small line out the door.The line moved quickly. I ordered the flat white and found a comfy leather seat at the counter.(something about counters folks!). I looked around and the place was buzzing: patrons talking, sipping and it looked like a community gathering which I LOVVVE especially on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The barista, David, found me and I looked at the little work of art that is a Flat White. I needed a FW, that double shot espresso to wake ME UP! One sip and I felt so much better than when I walked in. It was deliciously crafted and served in a pretty ceramic cup. I sipped and savored! As for the vibe, you can shut the buzz down a bit and listen to the cool music and scan the pretty room with beautiful plants. I was in my own oasis. There are sweets on the counter to accompany your beverage of choice. The seating offered is counter, small tables in and outside. The Villager sells international coffee from Rwanda, El Salvador, Honduras to name a few. Congrats to owners, Ben and Courtney for creating a wonderful community space in Brooklyn. After going for a run with my dog I needed a quick pick me and decided to stop in the villager. There was a long outside o guess due to this being the only decent coffee shop in the area? Unsure. Ambiance: 3/5 it's cute minimal but very small to me and tight inside Service: 3.5/5 service was okay not bad. Very standard. I'd return again. Food: 3/5 Matcha latte was okay I mean I ended up have to add more matcha to my drink from Dublin which kinda sucked. And it wasn't sweet enough. They have a drink called "espresso tonic" on their menu, listing these ingredients: "double espresso, lemonade, lemon juice, sparkling water & simple". You will note, as I did, that tonic water is not part of this list. I asked the cashier about it, and they said that the point is to emulate the flavor of tonic with "more control", enabling them to adapt to the flavor of the espresso, or something like that. How, precisely, you could emulate the flavor of quinine with lemon juice, simple syrup, and lemonade (ie, more lemon juice and more sugar) is not something they described, nor could I myself imagine how that could be done. But it sounded like it could be good regardless and maybe they were working some magic so I ordered it. It doesn't even come close to approximating the flavor of an espresso tonic. One is left wondering if anyone involved knows what tonic water actually is. If they wanted more control, it is easy to acquire quinine, or cinchona bark, and make a tincture. As a lemonade espresso, not bad! But it boggles the mind what they think it has to do with tonic. read more

While it's often very busy, the line moves quickly and the staff is both helpful and efficient (friendly and informative while keeping things moving is a delicate balance, but they do it). More importantly, the coffee is excellent. I am more into bitter things, but this place has really sold me on their delicious and light to medium selection, full of flavor. I routinely stop in to pick up beans, which are great, but also have gotten both their drip and espresso drinks and they're fantastic. Ordered: Flat White (~$5) Aya's take: Villager is a quality coffee shop - point blank. What gives it away is all the high quality coffee beans they're selling and using in their drinks! The Flat White had an excellent velvety texture with smooth espresso flavor and slight sweetness from the steamed milk. Very robust flavor profile that I enjoyed. Why 4 stars? It's so chaotic inside which takes away from the ambiance and the staff could do a better job at structuring the lines so there isn't a mob of people just standing around. You can really taste the spices. It's in line with NYC coffee prices. Coffee shop is small with limited seating inside and outside, but most people take their orders to go. I don't know what it is but a few coffee places have this burnt rose smell/flavor to the lattes and I really don't like it. This is one of those places. Maybe other people like this but just for me it's not my preference. I like when my lattes have a smoother finish. That being said I wouldn't come back here. The place was packed when I went in, but I was able to grab a seat. The have a good selection of speciality drinks and beans, but I ended up just getting a flat white. The coffee art was beautiful, and they even brought us our drinks. Coffee flavor was strong, and there was a perfect amount of milk. A much needed caffeine boost for the day. They have ample seating, but the benches against the wall lack tables. I awkwardly placed my drink next to me on the bench/held the cup and plate for half the time. Bathrooms are clean. There wasn't a place to put finished cups, so I ended up putting it back on the counter near staff. read more

We stopped here for coffee after a trip to the brooklyn botanical garden. I almost missed it, but it's right next to the juice place. There were no available seats outside, but inside there were a couple benches to sit on with small tables. When we went in the afternoon, there were only 2 pastries left. We ordered a flat white, a latte, and a chai. Both coffee drinks were very good and fragrant. The chai was yummy as well. This trip included a big NYC coffee tour and this place was my wife's favorite (well this and Sey). While I don't have a coffee palate as developed as hers, I did think the coffee flavor on my cappuccino came through really well. Cute little shop. Small but mighty. The coffee HITS. They don't roast their own beans but rotate through and feature some high powered local (and not) specialty third wave roasters like spectrum, sweetleaf, heart, etc. It's beautiful inside! Warm and pastel and good natural lighting. I would totally grab a book and read here. Nice benches outside to spill over onto if there's no space inside. Good location and service too. The star of the show is the coffee though. Clearly they care about quality here! I've gotten more and more picky about places to spend my money at and I am willing to spend here. I have no interest in anything coffee except for espresso (and ice cream/desserts!) and I thought I made pretty decent stuff on my ECM in Chicago, but one double here and I know I have to start over. Beautiful and open cafe on Classon. Brings a calm relaxed aesthetic with easy going service and seating It took me a while to come check the Villager out but I'm glad I finally did. The owner is super relaxed, and was taking care of some nice hanging plants when I first walked in. You can tell he has a good eye for design and puts love into the space itself. Had my usual capp w oat milk, and another time a macha.. all made to perfection. There is some cool seating down the middle of the space and great window seats in the front. I could see myself doing a little work at one of the counters on a nice sunny day. The light comes in perfectly in the afternoon Will be back for sure. Yes, it is on the pricier side but they know what they're doing here. Artisanal coffee (drip + lattes) with multiple milk options. They have a couple blends available for drip coffee so I definitely recommend asking and trying. Small spot but it's cozy and aesthetic. Will be coming back if and when in the area. read more

Villager is located one small street away from Prospect Park, a park that I cannot think about without envisioning muddy dogs swimming in the pond they call the dog beach. You can go to Villager, however, without even being aware of its vicinity to such a nice park and still feel like you've seen a lot of green. The block on which the café is situated has a coolness to it, as if it is always a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Part of it stems from it having what I believe is the tidiest sidewalk tree in New York City. The tree itself is large and provides plenty of shade. It's probably dozens, maybe one hundred years old (clearly, I have no idea, but the point is it's substantial). It has some small leafy friends planted in its plot of soil, which is lined with rocks, then doubly bordered with a rectangle of wooden benches. Not a piece of litter in sight. Brooklynite women wearing color-blocked outfits and socks with sandals manspread across the benches; tired-looking people with messy hair and silver laptops walk in and out through the glass door that is propped open. This is just the setup. Do you understand? We haven't even gone inside yet. It's one of those businesses that doesn't have a proper store sign, but you'll still go in because the front is fully glass; you see the coffee machines, the tables with apricot-colored spots, and the orb lamps hanging over the pretty kitchen constructed with light-colored wood, and you think--this place looks like they have coffee. The ceilings are high. Potted ferns and pothos hang from the water pipes that have been painted a brassy gold. I feel whatever about the plants as I do about most potted plants. I prefer the tree outside. Otherwise, the decor consists of cross-stitched seaside landscapes and paintings of Canadian geese, but these are located near the back of the café, so they're not very important. The crux of Villager is the way it blurs the border between customer and barista. A café by nature is a place where you can engage in idle conversation as you order your coffee, but here, the customer experiences more physical closeness with the workers. This actually made me realize--I rarely see the barista's lower body at other cafés. Villager's barista station is not walled off but opens directly onto the front door. Thus, you see the baristas stepping back and forth between the espresso machine and the grinder, and you see them walk down to hand-deliver your drink to you. You order your coffee while standing peaceably side by side with the cashier who will also make your cup. You get the sense that 'Customer is person; barista is person.' When I visited on a Tuesday afternoon, it was indeed around 72 degrees outside, which may be why I blissfully assert, 'Ah this place? Always 72 degrees.' I sat by one of the three tables at the front of the café. I leaned against the glass wall. I glanced at the small tea glass vases of flowers on each of the tables and thought, why does everyone like those flowers that look like brainy coral? I turned to the potted fiddle-leaf fig tree beside me. I wondered if it was intentional that the latest New York Times was lying inside the pot. I wondered, who put that there? Later, the two baristas walked out of their station and grabbed the NYT, muttered something about something always being in the arts section as they flipped through it, then put it down on the bench beside the plant, and returned to the barista station. read more
