After a long day of hiking I had the displeasure of eating the beef ribs at Park Distillery. The server sold me on their smoked beef rib special, covered with a chef's special BBQ sauce. I was very unimpressed. The ribs were far from tender, I had to violently tear at them to separate the meager amount of meat from the bone. Under the massive heaping of bbq sauce the meat held none of the smokey flavour that was promised to me from the server. Instead I had a bland, seemingly boiled and oven-cooked rib that was hastily basted with an average BBQ sauce. The sauce itself seemed like an afterthought, in addition to tasting overly sugary, it wasn't nicely caramelized on-top of the ribs. It was almost like the ribs were dipped into the sauce and placed on the plate. Along with the sub-par beef ribs, I was subjected to a boring coleslaw that might as well have been purchased from the deli at a local Safeway and mashed potatoes were equally average, kind of chunky with a small dollop of butter on top. The potatoes had no spice or flavour and weren't creamy or buttery. The only glimmer of hope I had during this meal was the corn bread, It was quite good, the maple topping was the best part of my meal.
The other three members of my group had more standard pub faire, the burger, pork fingers, and some kind of chicken. After polling the group they seem to have found the food to be pretty good, but nothing incredibly stand-out.
The service I had during the evening was also quite disappointing, my parties appetizer (the pork fingers) arrived fairly promptly within 15 minutes of ordering and were quite good. However, it took another 40 minutes for our main courses to arrive. It was quite busy but it was still felt like an excessive wait time. During our wait the server informed us that our food was "next to be delivered" however it was still 10 minutes before anything arrived.
When I expressed my dissatisfaction in the ribs to the server, at first she seemed genuinely concerned about comments but when she returned later she addressed me with a tone of sarcasm and degradation stating "I'll let the chefs know of your constructive criticism." She emphasized constructive in a very mocking manner. I felt very slighted by the tone.
As I payed, 60 cash on a 43 dollar bill, I requested change. She took the rest of the bills from my table and then walked away. I sat and waited for my change but she just walked by and said "Thank you" I had to call her out and request my change a second time. As she returned she confronted me and asked what was wrong with her service I mentioned her tone and the rebuttal she offered was that she keeps a book of the comments from customers. I again voiced my frustration, left four dollars as a tip and walked away.
As my group was leaving, we were followed outside by the co-manager. She questioned if there was any issues. I informed her of my frustrations in the server and the ribs and she seemed very apologetic offering to discount my meal. I politely declined as what I really wanted was a good meal, not my money back, and I don't feel Park Distillery will provide that.
They really push their smoked items and chef special BBQ sauce on the menu but both are very disappointing. If you do go here stick to the drinks and traditional pub faire.
To be fair, I did eat all of the ribs and potatoes, entirely out of hunger, I had no desire to wait for another 40 minutes for a replacement dish to be brought out for me.
I will probably not be returning to Park Distillery, and I cannot recommend it to anyone looking for BBQ in Banff. read more
