Based on how people before me rated this place, you would think it would be a journey to the 80 depths of Hell to eat from this place. Even though I voted positively on some of the reviews before coming here, I do ultimately as a whole think opinions are so mixed that it comes out too garbled to find which review to trust, so we have to just judge the place for ourselves.
And that's why I came along here. Well, that and I was on my way to Glastonbury and decided why the hell not. It's very close to I-691, so it's a very easy stop-and-go.
I will say that while the ambiance itself is nice and the assortment looks plentiful, picking which ones you want did present a challenge. Luckily, I was able to flag down an employee and ask them how I could choose. She pointed to the tongs and boxes, and from there it was smooth sailing. I will say that I appreciate that the display tells me what each pastry is, and how much it costs. That can go a long way to helping us as a whole decide what we want to go with. The price, however, is around $5 per each thing you get. For some places, I would happy pay a larger amount for good quality. But was what I ordered worth the price? Let's find out.
I ordered the pumpkin cheese danish, the cream cheese puff, a King Cream Donut, and a cinnamon apple pie that really just a turnover. I ate the cinnamon apple pie turnover during my trip to and from Glastonbury. The other 3 made it back to my apartment where I let my mom pick one. She chose the danish, leaving me with the other two pastries. I will say that mom did like the danish, so that is a step in the right direction. Now let's talk about the 3 that I ate because I think each one tells its own story.
We'll start with the item that was eaten during the trip. So the turnover had a light taste to it, a nice texture if you will. It's definitely a very "welcome to fall" kind of pastry. The only downside was that it seemed to have an oily aftertaste that I couldn't quite shake. Without thinking about the price, it gets a solid 3 and a half. Onto the cream cheese puff, and honestly, this was my least favorite of the 3 I ate. It wasn't bad, but there wasn't an even filling of cream cheese inside the puff. It also seemed to be a little on the skimpy side on the cream cheese when I got there. The sugar confection surrounding the pastry provided a nice contrast to the cream cheese within, but the dough was a bit tough to bite and chew through. I'd give that pastry a 2 and a half. And then onto the King Cream, and the difference between that and the cream cheese puff was night and day. The dough was much softer here, almost like a pillow, and they did not skimp on the cream filling here. That donut rates at a 4.
Overall, a clean, halfway decent place that is worth checking out if only to form your own opinions. I will say that these are a slight bit overpriced for what I got. This gets a strong 3! read more
