During the year-and-a-half we stayed at Avalon Walnut Creek nearby, the only thing that generated more excitement than the Taste of the World Food Truck events, was the news that Parada was moving into the neighborhood. After a long delay, they finally took their bow in June of this year, and having had plenty of experience with new establishments and their 'first week jitters', I advised that it would be better if we waited a week or two before trying it.
I am so sorry now that those weeks included the last few weeks we would spend living in Walnut Creek. Because had we stayed, Parada would have definitely become a weekly "thing" with us, especially being just around the corner.
Yes, we could tell from our initial visit, that the place was small, crowded and HAPPENING. But the seating on the outdoor patio certainly made up for it. And lucky us! The weather on the day of our first visit was damn near perfect, so outdoor seating was anything but an issue.
Nicole, who would have been "OUR" server, had we stayed, was warm, friendly and VERY knowledgeable about the menu and the wines. And what she didn't know, she quickly got us answers for. The mark of a good restaurant already - outstanding wait staff. I was hooked already.
But that menu...geez Louise.
I can't claim to be any kind of authority on authentic Peruvian cuisine, but if this is what it's like, then I could eat this way every freakin' day! We started off with the chicken and mushroom Chicharrones. Crispy, with a crust that was toothsome but not too thick, it perfectly complimented the flavorful bits of deep fried chicken and 'shrooms, which came with fresh, house-made dipping sauces. And the Empanadas - my new adopted favorite. It's probably not usual to see a savory meat pie dusted lightly with powdered sugar, but it only helped enhance the saltiness of the rich meat and gravy filling waiting within that light, tender crust.
The perfect capper were the filled cookies, with that leche-enhanced caramel in between, dusted with more sugar, of course. So light - I could have had a pound of them.
And I would be remiss not to mention the 'opener'...the small, warm dishes of freshly-cooked Peruvian corn that you first receive tableside, as sort of an 'amuse-bouche'. Think of what Cornnuts would have been, before they became mutant beings, drowned in salt and mummified in a plastic bag. And that's what this corn is.
Parada is so good, not only did we make sure we visited a second time before we moved, but my other half brought a friend from work to try it out with us as well, on our return visit. And yes, we asked specifically for Nicole, and sat at her station and waited for her...even though she wasn't due to be on-shift for another fifteen minutes after we'd arrived.
When you go to Parada, you should ask for her, too. Although I'm sure everyone there is really good at what they do. But you shouldn't wait too long. I could tell it was already starting to get to that point, where reservations will be awfully hard to come by. read more
