What a fun spot! My friend and I were walking the Art & Wine festival and decided to stop in for a light snack and some bevvies. I was driving home soon, so I asked for an N/A margarita, and it was delicious and special. My friend opted for the prickly pear (not N/A). I ordered a quesadilla (with chicken for a few bucks more), and not sure what I expected, but this was not your average quesadilla. My guess would be that they marinade their chicken. Kids quesadilla was a definitely a winner!!!! But this is my second time at Cantina Jack's, and sadly this place constantly leaves me with "buyers remorse". The space is beautiful and I'm sure the food is delicious to their target demographic, I guess I'm just not it. But the space is always packed, especially on the weekends. The food is extremely bland, truly lacks flavor. It doesn't even compare to the old school chevy's flavors. Today I ordered the fajita skillet, presentation was fine, but the shrimp were over cooked and the pinto beans were disappointing. I also ordered a Paloma, but the drink was overrun by the alcohol, so I switched to a Bellini. It arrived served in a champagne flute as opposed to a small wine glass and gave sugary, syrupy and premade mix. Maybe it's not premade, but it's definitely not giving "fresh" Bellini. It's also not giving Bellini, it's giving syrupy mimosa. We sat near the window to take in the fresh air and ended up be surrounded by parents using our window to place their children outside. And parents yelling across dinning tables at their children outside of the open windows. I know this is going to read as I'm bashing the space, which I am not!!!! This place never disappoints me. I come to this place a lot since the place is near my job. This time I came in with 5 other friends for a Christmas gift exchange. We order drinks , it was busy so drinks took a while to arrive to our table. Then we order food, we order a queso fundido to start and of course the free chips and salsa that are amazing kept coming cuz them soo soo good :) Finally we order our entrees and another round of drinks. Cantina Jack's is located in the heart of the Downtown Pleasant Hill shopping center. I met a group of friends here to celebrate a belated birthday for one of them on 05/28/2025. My friends had already gotten a table when I walked in at around 5:30pm. Being this was my first time here, I was immediately struck by the beautiful interior. The color scheme was vibrant, and the natural sunlight gave the room a warm and welcoming feel. There was a large bar area with TVs showing different sporting events. Occupancy was about 90% full, which gave the room a lively atmosphere. A trio of starters, along with complimentary chips and salsa, were already on the table when I sat down. The starters - Carne Asada Sopes, Ceviche, and Queso Fundido, were all very good. Out of the trio, I liked the Ceviche the best. The seafood was fresh, and the taste was light and tangy. Our original plan was to order some HH tacos, but our server failed to take our order prior to the 6pm cutoff time. One of my friends thought she did that on purpose just so we have order from the regular menu (in order to get a bigger tip). I ended up getting the Sizzling Chicken Fajitas. While it tasted alright, they were stingy on the chicken. I only saw five or six pieces of it. Service was subpar. Our server was friendly but inattentive. Not only she failed to take our HH order prior to the cutoff time, she also didn't check on us during the meal. I had to flag her down once for refill, and another time the manager actually had to do her job for her. It was most disappointing. The total, with T/T, was north of $200. Honestly, the overall experience left a sour taste in my mouth. Return trip extremely unlikely. 2 stars. read more

It was our first time into Cantina Jacks and it did not disappoint. The place is lovely, colorful and lively. Not too large and perfect for a large party, which is what we were checking it out for. I had the aguachile and a few of their different tacos, and they were delicious. These all came recommended from our server. Service was prompt, polite, professional and very friendly! It's definitely a different style of Mexican food. The Carne Asada Fajitas lacked depth and flavor. It was just chewy tasteless steak with very little onions and peppers. For $26 I expected better. Very little quac and sour cream. Refried black beans? They were ok. The rice definitely isn't homemade. The quesabirria tacos were decent. Salsa was different. They were training a runner and she was basically walking dishes table to table asking patrons if it was theirs. We love Jacks but the jury is out on Cantina Jacks. I got lamb tacos. I always love a fresh tortilla but it fell apart completely by the time I reached my room across the street. Homemade should hold up. So I was back there to introduce some more friends to this upscale Mexican restaurant. The hostess was busy on the phone so the gracious Crystal stepped in to help. We had a nice window seat. The restaurant truly feels very open and welcoming. The chips, salsa and water were continuously refilled. We ordered margaritas, fish tacos, shrimp fajitas and carne asada fajitas. Fun take on Mexican food with an extensive tequila list. Met family here for dinner and it was the first time for all of us. We were seated right away and by an open window to enjoy the cooling down of a warm summer day. I really want to continue to support a local business but they need to improve their service. Half of my visits have been good and the other half have been mediocre because of the service. This week's visit included stale, cold chips (the table next to us asked for new ones because they felt the same). The waitress was not attentive and just didn't seem to care. She would be chatting with her coworkers near the bar or in the dining area when we were waiting on her to bring our chips, drinks, etc. at one point she mentioned she'd check on our chips because by the second or third visit she made to our table, we still didn't have any. She didn't bring out the second beer we ordered, and overall just didn't seem to care about providing good service. We couldn't wait to get out of there. All this aside, their veggie burrito is great. I hope our next visit provides better service. read more

We also ordered margaritas with our meal. Got the 16 oz, but they looked the same as the 12 oz. Honestly could not tell a difference. We split the burrito with Birria. It was really good. Flavorful and filling. Definitely more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican. Yes, I requested a few substitutions in the burrito and yes, I expected to be charged for certain things. But charging me for two different salsas and then also charging for the consomé felt like too much. I asked for a spicier salsa. That should not cost six dollars extra. Also, check your receipt. We were overcharged on a couple of things. Not a huge deal but still annoying. Food came out fast. Pretty much right after we ordered. Drinks took a bit longer. Will I go back? Yes. Me and my boyfriend used to come to this restaurant all of the time before we moved. The service used to be great, the food always came out really quick and the servers were really helpful. Today we came for happy hour as we were visiting up north again and I'm honestly shocked at the service we received. It wasn't very busy for the amount of servers I saw working. It took about 10 minutes for someone to greet us and she didn't even have waters to give us. The chips and salsa used to come right away also. We had to ask her for water chips and salsa after she asked us if we were ready to order. I also asked for a water cup for my son, which never came so I had to ask again after 20 minutes. We placed an order for a taquitos appetizer, which never came. We then our server and she told us that she forgot to put them in. She asked if we wanted them, but at that point we we're about to get our entrées so it was too late. I ordered two happy hour tacos and when the cook brought out my food it was a two taco entree with different tacos than what I ordered. He was the only employee that was helpful this afternoon and made sure to go back and bring me the correct order. I also ordered a small spoon for my sons food which never came. While all of this was happening, I heard other tables around us complaining about their orders coming out wrong, or not at all. Had a great first visit here in late April. We went early on a Sunday night around 5:30 and were able to get a seat within 5-10 minutes. The first time we tried to eat here on a Friday, we were told the wait was 40 minutes, so we left and ate somewhere else. I'm happy to see they've added a reservation system via yelp to help with seating in the future! The restaurant has great ambiance and decor, and feels upscale for a cantina. Service was good. We liked the food as well. We wanted to try the ceviche but they were out at the time that we ordered. We got the chicken taquitos (4/5) instead, which were a generous portion and quite filling. This location is fun- from the decore, the staff, the place is always busy when I go by. The restaurant is always jumpin'! It is busy most nights of the week. The setup is a large, open space. That being said, on their busiest nights it is difficult to hear across the table to your other guests. Perhaps this isn't an issue during non-peak nights. There are no interior walls/rooms so sound does carry. Regarding the food- overall, the other guests enjoy their dishes. I ordered three Tacos Al Pastor. While they were very generous with meat filling, the flavor just missed the mark. The diced onions topped were diced large and the taste was a little overbearing. The pieces of cilantro were a nice decorative element; however, freshly diced cilantro is a classic must-have for also pastor tacos.
