My husband and I had been wanting to try this place and were disappointed. The server acting like she was annoyed with us from the time we sat down. They would not substitute the chicken sausage which is fine but I also couldn't order a side of it. (The owner came by after we finished and explained that it would have been more expensive and was very nice about it. ) Server seemed annoyed that I asked for chicken noodle soup but checked for me and it was ready. Unfortunately, it was not very good - wasn't expecting a bunch of zucchini - which only irritated our server even more. My husband got the biscuits and gravy combo. It was ok. The biscuit was cold so not the fluffy biscuit you expect. Gravy was good. I had asked to hold on to a menu so I could order food to go and while my husband and I were discussing what to get, she came and grabbed the menu off our table. And every time she asked how we were doing she didn't even stop at our table! So we did not order anything to go. I really wanted to like this place. It's decorated very cute with old pictures of Martinez and most of the people there seemed like regulars and the owner was talking to everyone. Came to JPs for brunch and was happy with so many things about this place. The service was quick and friendly even with a table of 9! We got our food very fast and it was hot and good! I ordered the pecan waffle and love that I can get this as a combo - oftentimes you can only get the waffle and have to add sides which gets costly. My sons got chocolate chip pancakes and a crispy chicken sandwich - both loved theri food. We were checked on a couple times and felt seen. You pay at the counter which is different but works. so i do not go to this place for the food, i go to hang out for breakfast with two friends, they eat bacon and eggs and hash browns and are happy,, i need a healthier diet and there is almost nothing on this menu i can eat. that is why i do not give it 5 starts because i like the people who run it. great. A Solid and Generous 4+ Star Breakfast and Lunch Experience. Gayle and I came here yesterday after arriving in the Bay Area from our home in Genoa Nevada. It was about 11:30 when we walked in and snagged one of the few available seats left. Service was prompt and friendly, and the place buzzed with happy energy. As the breakfast menu went until 2PM, I went for bacon and eggs (poached) with toast, hashbrowns, and orange juice. Gayle ordered a tuna melt off the Lunch side. It was all a log of food and in hindsight, both of us should have exchanged the potatoes for fresh fruit. Both of us also ordered coffee, with both of us agreeing that it was fresh and very good. Went to JP's Bistro after the movies, which is in Martinez. It is a very nice place, that serve breakfast and lunch, also have a small dinner menu on days they close at 9pm. Had their breakfast, I got a hamburger patty with eggs and my gf got Canadian bacon with eggs. The Canadian bacon was nice thick and tasty. The service was excellent friendly, attentive, and food came out fast. It has booths and tables, the lighting not too bright. I want to try their other things on the menu like their prime rib and their lunch menu. We ordered take out for the first time last week. Menu is great, something for everyone. The in restaurant vibe is very cool, seems like a local hang out, chill vibes. We had the zucchini twist (yum, I'm a sucker for fried zucchini!) Patty melt, rueben were good. Seems like most places cater to specific tastes: Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. But JP's is the exception. It's cozy and generally quiet (despite the big breakfast and lunch crowds), with plenty of good food in every category. Service is always splendid, with a friendly, helpful staff. And it's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is another exception and helps a lot, too. The breakfast and lunch items are particularly good, with practically any kind of breakfast food or lunch sandwich you can name. The only drawback is the dinner menu, which is somewhat limited. I suspect this is of necessity, with breakfast and lunch crowds being much bigger, what with work nearby from the county and such. The restaurant was full of workers like us passing through to grab a bite to eat. At the tables, family and friends sat, catching up with each other over plates piled high with sandwiches and fries. The servers greeted us, and my colleague and I were quickly seated. We were served glasses of water. After looking over the menu, I ordered a crispy fried chicken sandwich with a side of fries. It wasn't long before the food came out, and did it look good! The sandwich sat on the left; a generous piece of fried chicken rested on a layer of sliced pickles and mayonnaise, all between two fluffy buns. The fries had been piled onto the right side of the plate. It was a boldly simple presentation. I picked up the sandwich and immediately put it back down. The chicken was still piping hot from the fryer, and the heat scalded my fingertips. I started on the fries instead. Warm and comforting, each fry was a couple of delightful bites of crispy goldenness and starchy potato. When the fried chicken sandwich had cooled just enough, I took a bite. Delicious! Fluffy bread, crispy batter and juicy chicken filled my mouth with a tender yet satisfying crunch. The pickles brought a bit of balance and tang with them, and the creamy mayonnaise and sweet buns rounded everything out. I would have stayed longer, but we ended up taking the rest of our lunches to go since we were short on time. I was glad for the to-go boxes. They were spacious enough for my lunch; I piled the rest of my lunch into a box with ease. My time at JP's was an enjoyable one. If I'm working in the area in the near future, JP's Bistro would surely be one of the places I'd recommend to my colleagues to grab lunch. read more

The inside is interesting. I started this review a little while back, but seem to recall a train station type of feel to this restaurant. The service was alright. The servers were very busy with customers. I know I got the waffle because I love them, but it seemed heavy, dense, and doughy. Hey there Party People, I have to say I've never been a fan of take out for obvious reasons. Jp's Bistro has changed my mind the food was still warm when we got it home and the fries and onion rings weren't soggy. I ham the Ham Melt. It was not greasy and just super tasty. I am an onion ring snob so it takes allot to impress me. These onion rings were still firm and crunchy considering then were take out....the flavor was spot on as well. Hubby got the Tuna melt and gave it a 4 out of 5 stars. Thought the fries were good. My Friend Got the Salmon Salad. She loved it and the Salmon was blackened to perfection with fresh made guacamole on top. WELL! I am absolutely obsessed with this family diner. My boyfriend lives within walking distance from this place, and I have now eaten there at all times of the day--breakfast, lunch, dinner, you name it, I've been there for it. Breakfast: They never scoff at a customization here and there. I get my hashbrowns extra crispy and an omelette customized to my heart's content. No judgment, just breakfast. Lunch & Dinner: The menu is straight to the point with no nonsense which is exactly what you want from a diner. But okay, listen: Prime rib Fridays and Saturdays are just the best. They serve you a pretty thick cut of prime rib, accompanied by a mashed or baked potato (I opt for mashed potatoes loaded with bacon and cheese because I'm not a monster), and a nice, hefty pile of steamed broccoli and carrots. I have had this plate three times. In this time, I have never chewed on an odd piece of gristle, eaten a bite overcooked beyond my selected preference, or had a veggie that was not perfectly al dente. I can confirm that I have done happy dances, eaten my whole plate clean, and have been legitimately bummed out when they run out for the day! They have ribeye too, so we opt for that when we get there too late and the prime rib is gone. Service: Warm and cheery, and represents a type of down-home service going extinct in many neighborhoods. They're quite attentive even during their busy times. Sometimes, some kids hang out on the weekends and are always SO excited to wipe down a table, show you to your seat, or bring you water. The excitement of the kids hanging out in the diner really brings that American Pie energy to your experience. I love munching and quietly watching the kids play and try to get their hustle on. It's adorable. The Vibe: Interesting setup, one side of the diner is dedicated to railway elements, and the other side is going for an old golden Hollywood feel with a fixation on Marilyn Monroe, which my boyfriend and I believe is maybe a nod to DiMaggio? So glad we've discovered JP's Bistro. Breakfast is their specialty but there are some really good non-breakfast items on the menu as well. Highly recommend their soup, sandwiches and sides. We find the servings generous enough that I usually split a meal with my spouse. It's a great way to eat out for lunch and not get indigestion from laying down $50+ for lunch. Tonight we headed to JP's Bistro for dinner - hungry and no time to cook. Well, this was FABULOUS, in all areas - food was delicious, service staff was attentive, prompt and just good folks, plus the atmosphere was welcoming and casual. Just what we needed! The service was lovely, we were asked about beverages and if we wanted water. As my beverage of choice, that's what I had. We were asked if we wanted refills as well. Quick service for hungry diners, and all was good! I ordered the shrimp tacos and they were SPECTACULAR!!! There was plenty of scrumptious filling - lots of perfectly cooked shrimp, plump and sweet, tender black beans, fresh tender lettuce, a bit of green cabbage, tasty pico de gallo with beautiful red and tasty tomatoes, and a touch of slightly spicy Mexican sauce. The taco shells were soft and warm, FILLED with this satisfying shrimp filling; they were a foodie delight! And the rice - I know, it's rice. BUT, this rice was the most amazing and perfectly cooked rice ever! Sincerely, I could have eaten way too much, had the shrimp tacos not been calling me. The rice was absolutely PERFECT! Just the right moisture; soft enough, but kept the rice structure, and the parsley added the absolute best color and flavor. No kidding - this is rice worth coming to PJ's for! My husband order the pork chops. We could not believe the plate! It was holding a mound of impeccable mashed potatoes topped with faultless brown gravy - just enough, and not swimming in it either! The most fresh and green broccolini was adequately abundant - not an after-thought at all! (Love those veggies too!) And of course, the PORK CHOPS - plural, as in two big chops! Excellent grilling produced tender and well cooked meat with a flavor beyond compare! A little bit of fruity sauce added just the best flavor to the pork, and was not detracting at all! My husband raved about the whole dinner - appearance, presentation, taste, flavors... everything was just the BEST! And of course, dessert! He ordered coffee cake - and the waitress asked if he wanted butter on it. Sure - that was new to me, and... OMGoodness - out came a huge piece of the most beautifully baked cake, with a golden brown crumb, and a soft-crumb topping as the "coffee cake crumb" stood tall and inviting. The butter melted down and into the warm cake.... it was pure crumb cake paradise! Looked so inviting, smelled great and tasted divine! The perfect ending to a fabulous dinner! Thank you PJ's Bistro! It's weird what you notice sometimes -- this place has the best fruit bowl. It's an actual variety of fruit and it's all very fresh. It costs fifty cents more than most places, but it's 100% worth it. I go here for breakfast a lot. All the food is good and the staff and management are both friendly and attentive. It's got a very local vibe and if you want to see pictures of the old Martinez train station or Marilyn Monroe with her Martinez born husband Joe DiMaggio you'll be pleasantly surprised. Only reasons it gets 3 stars are as follows: my veggies and mashed potatoes both were not hot. My veggies were not even luke warm. COLD. My potatoes were like Luke warm which I didn't like. My bfs fries were not warm either . ONLY THING REALLY HOT WAS THE CHICKEN SANDWICH. My salmon was warm but not steaming. It was busy not sure why the issues with all the sides. Also my salmon was just ok. It smelled very fishy and tasted more fishy than I usually like. I have had salmon on many places in the area that did not have a strong fishy smell and taste. So gave a 3. If the sides were warm I probably would upped to 4 but it disappointed me going first time. I had high expectations. Will go back and try something else. read more

JP's is a hidden gem. The owner, Pablo, is incredibly nice and the food they dish out is top notch. The zucchini and corn appetizers were great. Don't sleep on their chicken sandwich. It was so fresh, tender and the slaw complimented it perfectly. We also ordered the JP burger which was excellent. Can't wait to try their breakfast. This is a nice warm, friendly atmosphere restaurant. It's clean well kept and feels good to be here.. there's a lot of local people in here and single people eating, which says a lot. However, being a seasoned individual eating at thousands of different restaurants. Id like to bring attention to some issues that i came across. The coffee is not very good. It's extremely watered down and has no flavour except that of maybe water with coffee flavoring. There are no options for lactose intolerant customers such as oat milk or almond milk. (You can pick it up for a dollar at the dollar store in cartons for those rare moments when someone request those so it's not a big money issue.) There was no water served. I would've liked some water to wash down the food. Oh wait I have coffee. I guess it's the same thing lol. The avocado was not ripe so it had that weird citrusy taste to it so I was not able to eat it. The mushrooms were black and dark in color. I know they do turn colour when you cook them...I'm very sensitive to eating mushrooms since I was poisoning once by mushrooms at Denny's. Other than the coffee, no water and raw avocado everything was relatively good. What You'd expect a diner. read more

This is such an unassuming place but the service and food are great. It started off very quiet but quickly filled up but it was never too noisy. We were seeing a movie across the street and came in for a quick dinner. Hubby had the western burger & onion rings and I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. For an appetizer we ordered the not to be missed fried zucchini and oh my word was it delicious. In fact we both wished we hadn't ordered fries or onion rings. My sandwich was moist and crispy. I really enjoyed it. Hubby's burger was vey tasty. My fries were great and I got to try an onion ring and it was very good. Came in for the prime rib special on a Friday (available Friday & Saturdays only). The prime rib was pretty large cut and was cooked as I had asked but I felt like it was a little under flavored. Prime rib doesn't have a strong flavor to begin with but the better ones that I have had had either good au jus and a nice salty crust around the edges of the prime rib. This one had a good crust but once you got past that, I felt it lacked the flavor. Even with horseradish I felt it was lacking flavor. The toast was good and so was the mashed potatoes. I just wished I liked the prime rib more. My wife got their pot roast which I had never tried before but I tried hers and it was really good. Great flavor and big chunks of meat. She also really liked their fried zucchini and wants to go back for that. The restaurant appears to be run by a family and have a lot of locals dine there. The owners seem very friendly and very close with some of their frequent diners which is great. I will continue to support local restaurants with great service. We will definitely be back to try different items on the menu read more

We were seated right away, they were a bit blown out & the waitress let us know she'd be back to take our order & she was. Had the typical American breakfast with bacon, eggs & hash browns; hubby had the huevos rancheros & lastly we split a waffle with strawberries on top. Really like that they offer a mini version, so you can get 1 egg versus having to get 2. Typical dinner food done well. We will be back. read more

Hidden Gem. Prime rib on Friday and Saturday. They do serve basic alcohol beverages. Great breakfast, burgers, sandwiches. They have a great kids menu and comfortable table seating. They have a 3% up charge for credit card payments. Make sure you're not being charged the 3% fee if you pay cash, they're bad about it and rude if you ask. Their bathroom stinks!!!! It smells like chemical sewage. I got a headache and was nauseated for hours after leaving the restaurant. On top of that, their food was so bland. Hash browns and coffee were the only decent thing but that's about it. Seriously you're better off going to IHOP down the road or the tried and true Copper Skillet in downtown. Service here is exceptional! First time here. The servers chat with almost all the customers. It seems like family. Our server said about half of their customers are regulars. The owner came out to refill coffees and talk with all the customers; she was very kind. It's a very friendly casual environment. As far as food, honestly to me it was ok. I had the CA eggs Benedict. I couldn't really taste the hollandaise. Also the hash browns were mostly soft and only small amount fried. I prefer more flavor and texture. Hubby got the Sante Fe. He liked it. We liked this place until we didn't. Ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and salmon tacos. I'm not sure why the salmon tacos were so good two weeks ago and then so absolutely bad now, as they decided to use smoked salmon and then pan-cook it. I'm not sure if the chefs know but smoking is the cooking process, so cooking it again makes it basically cardboard. Jps is located next to safeway and it's safe to say that they grabbed bagged lettuce mix, Ready-Pak, and put it in the wrap. It was basically all I could taste, unfortunately.
