Regular burrito. However, I had ordered a Super Burrito
    Bart S.

I recently ordered six "quesabirria" tacos along with a Super Burrito, and I'll start with what worked well. The tacos were served hot, well-seasoned, and generously filled with meat. The brisket itself is flavorful and clearly prepared with care, which deserves recognition. That said, there were a few notable disappointments. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was informed that they were out of consomé. Given that consomé is an essential component of the quesabirria experience, this was very unfortunate and took away from what could have been a standout dish. I also want to gently address the naming of the dish. I placed "quesabirria" in quotation marks intentionally. What's being served here is essentially a brisket quesadilla--tortilla, cheese, and meat--and while it's tasty, it doesn't quite align with what defines a QUESABIRRIA. A true quesabirria is filled with birria: slow-cooked meat (traditionally goat, though beef or lamb is common) braised in a deeply spiced adobo made from dried chiles like guajillo and ancho, along with warm spices and aromatics. This process produces both tender meat and a rich, savory broth known as consomé. The brisket at Don Chai is enjoyable in its own right, but it isn't birria, and the distinction matters a lot--especially for such an iconic dish (quesabirria). Moving on to the Super Burrito: I paid for a Super Burrito, what I received instead, was a very basic burrito consisting of meat, beans, and rice, lacking the variety, balance, and boldness one expects from a "super" designation (pico de gallo, sour cream, avocado/guacamole). I'll be sharing a photo for context, but the overall impression was plain and underwhelming. Finally, the salsas deserve immediate attention. As accompaniments, salsas should enhance and balance a dish, especially when the food itself is already rich and savory. Here, the salsas felt mismatched. They were overly runny, noticeably sweet, oily, and oddly creamy, which dulled rather than lifted the flavors of the food. I appreciate the creativity behind incorporating pineapple into a salsa--it's an idea with real potential--but the execution leaned too far into sweetness. The green salsa was particularly puzzling: thin, creamy, oily, and lacking the brightness or herbaceous character one expects from a green salsa. Even its name felt misleading. The red salsa also majorly missed the mark, seemingly relying on the wrong choice of chilies that didn't deliver on taste nor balance. Overall, the meat is well prepared, and the concepts are promising. With some major refinements--especially in accurately representing dishes (quesabirria) and reworking the salsas--this could become a much stronger experience.

I've been all over the Bay, from SF's Breakfast Little to Berkeley's La Mission. Tacos Don Chai has one of the best, if not the best breakfast burrito in the Bay. I typically order the sausage or go no meat and add guac. The tater tots are always fried to a crunchy perfection. The scrambled eggs are light and fluffy. But the real secret is the layer of grilled cheese just under the tortilla, making each bite filled with gooey, cheesy deliciousness. For salsas, I get their salsa verde. But I also like to mix their piña and their fiery salsa rojo, which gives the burrito a great spice with a touch of sweetness.

Finally getting around to updating my pics! The outdoor patio is even more lovely to enjoy while having a meal. The plants give it a grounding feel and the live edge tables and benches add a calmness to contrast with the metal chairs. Note: The one with the red table was how it looked a few years ago.

Best taco spot in the area - a hill I'm willing to die on. Very small spot that you order inside and pick an area outside to eat. Their queso tacos and quesabirria tacos hit the spot, especially with their piña salsa they make in house.

I've heard that Tacos Don Chai had really good tacos! However, I didn't get to try it until recently. My boyfriend wanted to try a place that offers chicken quesatacos, because he can't eat beef (quesabirria). We haven't found a local restaurant that really stood out to him, until we tried Don Chai! We ordered for pick up through Door Dash because their website wasn't working. I didn't realize they close so early (5pm)! We ordered around 4:30pm and our food was ready fairly quickly! The food smelled so good!!! I ordered 3 quesabirria's with consome on the side. The consome was in a small container and didn't cost extra, but you had to request it. The tacos also came with 3 different salsas. My boyfriend really enjoyed his 3 chicken quesatacos and said that this was our new place to go! The tacos we had were nice and crispy and weren't greasy at all! Who knew Martinez had a solid taco spot?! Glad we tried Tacos Don Chai and found our new local quesabirria/quesataco spot!

A few friends suggested this place and we decided to go on a weekday before lunch. We ordered the carne asada burrito and the Quesabirria tacos. First off what is Birria without the CONSUMÈ?? It's just a regular Birria taco! Come on guys, consumè! Consumè! CONSUMÈ!!! This day they DIDN'T have CONSUMÈ!! Por Que??? WTH! We needed that consumè to complete the Don Chai "Special Brisket Birria Experience!" How hard is it to make Consumè?? Anyhooo, the Quesabirria tacos had good flavor and balance with the crispy tortilla. We wish they would have used two tortillas, since the taco kind of fell apart. It was a good taco nevertheless! The carne asada burrito was good as well. Good flavor from the nice cut of meat. They need more pico de gallo in the burrito to put this over the top. The salsas were decent, mild pineapple, light green avocado-ish salsa and a spicy orange brown salsa. They had good flavor but not a salsa you can enjoy with chips. Which they did not give out any free chips. Pineapple drink was good and light. All in all, it was a good food experience. One of the better tasting Birrias in the area. We probably will come back to try the other items on the menu sooner than later. Hopefully next time they have consumè!! Customer service was really good, accommodating. Nice outdoor seating area.

I rarely make it out to Martinez, but this place has been on my radar for a while. I ordered the Super Burrito with birria and the chilaquiles rojos with chorizo, an over-easy egg, and rice and beans. The chilaquiles were outstanding, honestly the best I've had in a long time. The flavors were spot on, and I highly recommend ordering them the same way I did. The Super Burrito was also really good. I loved the smokiness of the red sauce, while the green sauce had a creamy, tangy lime flavor that balanced everything nicely. I noticed a lot of people ordering takeout, and although the inside dining area is small, there's plenty of space out on the porch. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

Well I thought about typing my review in AI and decided against it. I went there today expecting the same great quality burrito as always but damn.. I was told they now have pastor tacos and... tbh I got a bit excited.. "this place is usually known for great beef and chicken ." Holy smokes the el or al (not sure which) pastor tacos smoothed my 7-5 craving and I wanted more even thought my better judgment got the best of me. So freakin good especially with the pineapple sauce over LEMON (don't ever remove the lemon don chai). I found myself drizzling each taco multiple times in lemon and pineapple sauce over and over savoring each and every bite. Super good and super good value. I'd recommend it every day. I just wish they were opened later so I could get some for my family but I heard hours may be longer in the summer at least? Really good food. Great value. Great atmosphere.

Drove from Oakland to pick up some Compa Munchies candy and decided to have lunch here . I had the torta de asada, and my husband ordered the chilaquiles and quesabirria tacos. Everything was full of flavor and definitely did not disappoint. The passion fruit agua fresca was super refreshing and the perfect complement to the meal. Worth the drive and I'd absolutely recommend this spot.

We adore the ambience of inside and out, seating is plentiful with a very relaxing atmosphere. We definitely will be bringing family and friends to share our wonderful experience. One of the best tacos I've ever had! This is a spot I dream about and can never say no to. It's consistently delicious and hits the spot every single time. Everyone I've brought here - whether it's their first time or they've been before - ends up loving it just as much as I do!

We placed a very simple order, a single super Asada burrito with extra cheese and grilled onions. It is a regular order, and as we have gotten older, one is enough to split. We received the normal 15 minute estimate. I arrived and the place was oddly empty. I walked up to the pickup counter, and was told it would be a couple of minutes. The normal crowd began to grow, and after check 3 times and 35 minutes later, I was called up, I got my burrito, and left. It became clear that they either forgot, lost, or handed my burrito to someone else, but the staff made me feel awkward for asking about an order that was taking 4x the estimate. And what a mess of a burrito. It was extremely greasy to the point that I had to wipe it down with a napkin. It actually left a puddle of oil on my plate. The extra cheese was one solid block in the middle and grilled onions were practically raw. It was one of the worst burritos. The meat was good, but there was no care taken in the preparation of the burrito. I used to tell people how good this place was. I don't think I could do that again with a clear conscience. The staff was disorganized, rude, and the quality of food has vanished.
