Prices here reflect convenience, not value, and the return policy--30 days only--offers little protection if a gift doesn't work out or a defect surfaces later. My experience with their paper "Plantable Hearts" was especially disappointing: not a single seed germinated. When I asked for support, the store indicated "Paper Source" created the item, so they weren't responsible. After this surprising and disappointing lack of accountability, I contacted Paper Source's customer service. Their response was "Unfortunately, our return and refund policy is 30 days." After another round of emails, Customer Service maintainded their refusal to address their defective product: "Unfortunately, for any type of exchange, return, and refund, you have 30 days to contact us about it." This is a very special boutique store with unique gifts, premium stationery, and great gift wrapping items for birthdays and holidays. I dropped a gift off to be wrapped for Christmas, and they got it done the same day. The manager Deb was amazing! She was kind, friendly, and communicated extremely well. So sad today. it has always been a sweet moment to visit your store. I linger long but today is the last time. I accidentally bumped a small ceramic box and it fell and broke. i come here for almost every card that I need! I'm pretty sure I've came here over 50 times already lol. This location is super convenient for me which makes it my go to shop. if you're in a rush and need a l card - this is the best spot. Even if you're not in a rush - it's the best spot for cards for any event! They also have a bunch of items to buy that are perfect for gifts. I thought my card shop IQ was really high because I'm a regular at Hallmark stores such as Elam's in Poway and also always drop into Papyrus when I'm at the mall. I almost never just buy a card from a drugstore, or worse, NOT send one at all for special occasions. But my mind was blown and I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped into Paper Source. They have some of the most creative, clever, and pop-culture-loving cards I have ever seen. A "Three Wise Women" Christmas card featuring Oprah, Gloria Steinem, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- yes, please! They also had a "12 Beys of Christmas" featuring Beyonce and a cheeky leg lamp Christmas Story movie card. I spotted a thank you card that had an image of Tom Hanks and the words "T.Hanks" on the front. Their snark isn't just reserved for cards. They have wrapping paper designs that will make you look twice. I picked up a "Making Spirits Bright" roll that featured images of cartoon cocktails. They also have lots of clever gifts (such as the llama screen cleaner) and things you don't see elsewhere, like heart shaped junior mints for Valentine's Day. The prices are on par with Papyrus; in fact they are a little higher, but it's worth it to get a card that will make your gift recipient say "where in the world did you get this?" and treasure it. They also host creative workshops (update: apparently they are paid events, not free), such as making your own cards, and have a calendar print out of upcoming dates at the register. read more

I have been wanting to visit this store for years. Today, after shopping at Whole Foods which is located in the same small shopping area in La Jolla I stopped in. Very pretty shop, and decorated for the holidays. I looked around for quite sometime. I was most excited to see some stocking stuffers that I was updated have bought except for the price, and the lack of even a welcome from the owner! She could care less about my questions and totally ignored me. I said the pricing was high, what I really meant to say is the their prices are outrageous! I think the owner should move this store to Rodeo Drive in LA. Maybe there her snooty attitude and prices would get a draw. No thanks, I am never going back! I hoped to see original items in the store but there was not ONE. Every item can be found on amazon for 1/5-1/10 the price. PLEASE SO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS STORE. PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE WORKSHOPS Update: I've taken a couple more classes and have continued to enjoy them. The instructor, Shay, is really nice, knowledgeable and helpful. She really gets to know the participants and gives each of us individual attention. (Even after almost a year, she remembered my name and a story I told her at the last class). I appreciate that she gives us several options to make our cards different than the "samples." Last time she even brought us some Kit-Kats from her recent trip to Japan! She made the whole night fun and creative! The other employee, Rose, usually stops by to chat and help too. She hosts some of the other classes and (from what she described) changes them up from the corporate standard and uniquely personalizes them to the participants. You get a 10% off coupon after the class and the employees let us stay late to shop. Since I took the time to add extra touches to my card, Rose let me use the coupon for an extra week! My only criticism is that there aren't enough classes and sometimes the classes are too large and feel rushed. read more

I came here yesterday and really wanted to purchase something special for one of my coworkers. I was having a hard time coming up with ideas and creativity. I wanted a girl who wrote the stuff on the boards around to write something very simple, "we'll miss you" in cursive. She charged me $6. Took about 2 minutes. Then I wanted her to write the same thing on my notepad I purchased and she wanted to charge me another $6. Like that's a total rip off and not okay. I don't get why they wouldn't even do it for complimentary when the shop was empty and just to give good customer service. I hate writing bad reviews but I hated my whole experience at this store. The other girls were rude, rolling their eyes and talking behind our backs. The manger was even worse. Kristen & Stephanie were so rude. It made us so uncomfortable. I love paper, paper goods, stamps, craft goodies and basically anything in this store. However, I have to give this place 3 stars because almost every time I stop by, no one says hi to me. I've probably been here over 20 times in the past couple years and I can only recall a handful of times where someone has actually acknowledged me and asked if I needed help. Most of the time I get ignored. Other than the semi decent customer service, they have a lot of fun items at this shop. From paper to little tchotchkes, it's just fun to look around. They have great products but they are way overpriced! If there's something I need that's pretty specific then I'll go here. Otherwise, I'll keep going to Michael's to buy it for half the price. Don't get me wrong, their paper and cards are super cute because it's the big name paper companies like Paper Rifle Co. and Hello Lucky but they are pricey due to their quality. This is a great idea place. After walking through you get the urge to go home and make something beautiful. Okay so the paper is somewhat expensive and you can get wrapping paper for less at Target but its not as beautiful as the paper here. This is art! Workers are very helpful and attentive! For those who would like to be crafty but might not be as knowledgeable, don't be shy to ask the workers any questions about their products or how to use it. I find myself wondering through the store looking at all the fun crafts and examples they have and I always get greeted and they make sure that it's known they are there for any questions. It might seem a little intimidating at first, but it's only because they enjoy showing you their products. Love all the examples they have posted on the walls, definitely shows you that a bunch of their crafts are easy to do especially for beginners or those who want to be crafty but don't have the time to do everything from scratch like myself. Obviously all good things like this come with a price, so some of their things are pricey, but it's all the price for the convenience. I was so happy that Paper Source came near my hood - it's a super cute store that I thought OMG I'm going to do a lot of shopping here! Well, turns out that I don't do a lot of shopping there - I do a lot of browsing there and go and find things cheaper online or somewhere else. This store has become my idea store. It's a little sad just because some of the books & fun things are all still full priced all the time so what happens is you can find a book in there that you might want but look on Amazon.com and it's a 1/3 of the cost. During our elementary school years, my sister and I would beg our Mom to take us to the Stationery Store on Poway Road. Bouquets of sharpened pencils, sharpies in every color, brightly colored butcher paper rolls on large spools, glitter in all shapes and stickers slick or fuzzy. It was a magical place that smelled like hope to two girls that were tired of the stale stink of cigarettes and owl pellets from the borough known as Garden Road. I recently went into the Paper Source to buy paper for our save the date cards. I will say we love the color we chose, but I wish they had a bit more to choose from. Either way we found a paper color we liked and then a beautiful dark colored envelope caught my eye. We decided on Blush colored paper for the save the dates and Aubergine envelopes. The lady that helped us pick out the paper and gold pens to address them was patient with my indecisiveness and helpful with her suggestions! Thank you! On my way up to pay I remembered I custom ordered a pre-inked return address stamp all the way from Malaysia that was already on its way and was pre-inked BLACK! Black and Dark Aubergine were not going to work together. I was sad and about to put the envelopes back and choose a lighter color when a helpful employee asked if we had any questions.. I asked if their metallic colored ink pads would work with a pre-inked stamp. She said probably not and offered a suggestion. She walked us over to a station full on scraps and baskets of inks and pulls out a dark green scrapped envelope and uses the store's pre-inked stamp and proceeds to show us how to emboss the stamp! She was even nice enough to show us all the gold color options and how to use the heat tool. She saved the day with this great and elegant idea! We were so elated with the idea and how pretty everything looked. The employees that helped us were great and we will definitely be back for more wedding projects! read more

I have a secret obsession with paper: cards, invitations, tags, notes, stationary, and books. Yes, I am a paper-phile. And I love Paper Source. This location -- the only one in San Diego -- isn't as big as the stores in Pasadena or Dallas; but what it lacks in size, it makes up with paper, whimsical gifts, great employees, and fun workshops. My affinity with Paper Source began when I sent out my save-the-date wedding magnets ten years ago. I needed something to stick the magnets on -- I found PS online and bought some pearlized A2 scalloped cards and matching envelopes. I was hooked. It's true; Paper Source isn't cheap. But higher quality paper never is and there is a tangible difference. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Michael's coupon shopper and regularly go there for things like tape, glue, basic cardstock, embossing powder, and rubber stamps. PS is just better for quality paper, cards, all types of holiday decor, and fun gifts. I also really like the PS designs; they're generally stylish, vibrant, pretty, and fun. What can I say, I'm a sucker for clean, pretty designs. I've attended workshops at this store, which are totally fun, and open to new and experienced crafters. The topics tend to be seasonal; in November, I attended a holiday card making class and in December, a gift wrapping class. Gift wrapping may be common sense to most people, but I actually picked up some new skills that made it look less like my cats wrapped my gifts. The workshops are typically $25-$30 each class, run for an hour and a half, and are limited to 8-10 people. One thing I particularly enjoy is that during those 90 minute classes, we get free range to many different PS tools and supplies; things that I don't necessarily own and enjoy using for free! The people who work at this store are always super friendly and helpful. If I need help or just have a question, someone is always willing to offer ideas, answers, and solutions. read more

You could easily purchase the same things online for much cheaper. The customer service here is awful. They should really spend the same amount of time with each customer, rather than brushing off customers who are trying to make purchases. The last time I came in, it was extremely dead. I came in to purchase some gift wrap and asked if I could just wrap it myself very quickly in the back. The rep said she should wrap my gift for a fee, so long as I buy the supplies. They do have some interesting items, however they are priced very well compared to other boutiques in San Diego. I come here mainly for decking out my gift packaging for my small business. They have plenty of styles to design with. If you want Eco-Friendly or Shimmery Glam, they have something for everyone. One thing to suggest to Paper Source, make sure your Sales Associates know which paper/envelopes/cards are Laser Printer friendly. Love this place! I've been to this square a couple of times but have never seen this shop. It's really cute- with a lot of sample cards and tons of ideas for cards & gifts. They even have workshops, too! The employees were super helpful and really nice. They have a demo table which is super helpful for visualizing different craft techniques. I come here time to time now since I live close by. I love Paper Source! It's heaven to me... I usually find good stuff and get what I need. I just don't like the parking lot here. In my previous visits, I feel like it's hard to tell who works here because I can't tell if they are a customer or worker based on their clothes. Or that's just me. Also another time when I had a question, there was lack of coverage and there was only one worker that helped me and a line formed to be rung up at the counter and I felt bad!
