Aside from books, this is one of the best places to shop for stationery and gifts in SD. I've found many cute gems here over the years, from page flags and stickers to journals and cute lil knick knacks. Admittedly, I usually stop by for everything but their books as that's usually what piques my interest at Warwick's. I've discovered so many cute stationery brands that I've never even heard of, like Girl of All Work's Page Flags and more recently, L'après-midi Travel Journals! The shop is divided into 2 halves. One side carries art/decor and jewelry made by local artists in glass displays, and as you walk further in, you'll see an extensive selection of greeting cards, notebooks, and fountain pens in glass cases. They also carry gift wrapping supplies and assorted bags. The other side carries books and has a cute children's section with plushies, including Jellycats! I do have to say, the service is not always consistent. Some of the employees definitely profile you upon entering, but there are respectable employees that are genuinely eager to help you find what you're looking for! As a local, whenever I'm unable to find something in-stores, an employee happily offers to take down my info so that they can contact me if the item arrives in-stores at some point, which I greatly appreciate. From my experience, the pricing for the stationery is fair, in fact, for some of the items that I've purchased, Warwick's prices are actually lower than what you'd find online. The L'après-midi Travel Journals retail for $18 online from the brand's exclusive US distributor, but Warwick's prices the journals at $13.95! Similarly, the Girl of All Work Page Flags retail for $7 on the brand's website, but at Warwick's, it's $5.99. Parking can be difficult if you're trying to park directly in front of the store or on the main street, but if you drive around a bit, you're likely to find a spot within a reasonable walking distance. All in all, Warwick's remains as a fun shopping destination. If you're anything like me, you'll walk in with no intention to get anything, but will walk out with a shopping bag in hand. :) read more

Warwick's has been around for over a century, and they have the attitude to go along with that storied history. While the bookstore itself has a decent & varied selection of new books, and they'll order any book for you that they don't have, it is not the most pleasant place to shop. As a bibliophile and an English teacher, I really want to like and support Warwick's, but unfortunately, they've treated me poorly on multiple occasions which makes it challenging for me to give them more chances. There are many book sellers & employees, but they are not very helpful and they treat you like an inconvenience or worse. The right side of the store is book-centric while the left side of the store is mostly stationery & cards, writing utensils, gift items, and tchotchkes. Today, I purchased a book and a pen refill with a credit that I had at the store. I requested the pen refill from one counter, and I had to go to the book counter to pay for my book. Instead of giving me the refill so I could bring it over to the book counter and pay for both items with my credit, the employee brought the refill over herself and told a 2nd employee while pointing at me that, "that woman over there is also getting this pen refill along with her book." Then the 2nd employee handed the refill to a 3rd employee who stashed it behind the counter while I waited for my turn to pay. Keep in mind that the pen refill was a mere $6 item but they treated it like a precious gem that would surely compel me, if I held it in my own hands, to run out of the store with it without paying for it. Meanwhile, I'm holding the much pricier book that I'm going to purchase in my hands, but I rapidly felt like turning on my heels and vacating the store, and leaving the book behind, of course, because that moment was just so strange and uncomfortable. Over the past ten years, I have regularly patronized this store and I've purchased items here multiple times per year. However, there is no recognition, no friendliness, nothing to indicate that I'm more than just a tourist popping in on vacation. At the very least, a friendly greeting would do, but no such luck. Every time I cross the threshold, I feel a wall of snootiness that is just unpleasant and takes away from what could be a lovely shopping experience. As I'm sure you've figured out by now, items are definitely on the pricey side here. You can certainly find a better value and probably way friendlier service at other bookstores outside of LJ. I think Warwick's probably provides a different type of shopping experience for patrons depending on who the employees perceive them to be, even if they are way off the mark. C'est la vie. Just know that if you are a POC and you shop here, you may have an unpleasant experience, but I certainly hope that you don't! Peace. read more

Warwick's in La Jolla is a fun place to shop for a wide selection of eclectic items. They also had a giant chess set outside, all setup and ready for people to play a match. That was a nice touch, extra service. The prices are not the cheapest but they have some really nice items, and as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, quality is not cheap. There is some street parking on the road right in front of the store, there are also some paid parking garages nearby. It is also a short walk over to the ocean from here. Warwick's was founded in 1896. Ponder that one. That was 130 years ago. My guess is downtown La Jolla, where the store is located, looked a little different back then. Their website says that Warwick's is the oldest continuously family-owned and operated bookstore in the entire country. It even has a Wikipedia page. So, yeah, it is kind of famous. The store itself is divided into two halves: books on one side, cards, stationary, paper, office supplies, and knickknacks on the other. The different sections in the bookstore are well organized and the place is not that big where you can get lost. The selection is well curated and you can tell these people like books. It is not just another business to them. I am almost always going to buy from a real bookstore, and hopefully an independent one, rather than from a big impersonal online seller, if I can. although they have a great selection of books and cards, I mostly shop here for the stationery. this year was my first time trying a Hobonichi planner. I saw that Warwick's carried them, so I called to ask what designs they had in stock since there are a ton of options. both times I called, the responses felt rushed and not very helpful. I was told they had them in stock, but couldn't get any info on which designs or how many. I ended up driving over twice.. once to find they only had one blue planner left, and later again after a restock because it was too close to the new year to order online. luckily, on my second visit, I did end up with the one I wanted. I love my new planner and prefer supporting local shops, but the customer service around these was a bit frustrating. next year I'll probably just order online or go somewhere else for a better experience. read more

Warwick's in La Jolla has had a long presence in this community. This shop has every category of books, reference books, the top best sellers, and other things like toys, jewelry, art and office supplies all reasonably priced. It's always neat and organized inside and outside, the shop has nice curb appeal. I always find free street parking out front. As recent as last week, my iphone desperately needed charging and I was no where near home, office or my vehicle to charge it. Luckily, Warwick's happened to have a tech section. With the help of a staffer named Chez, she helped me find the perfect one which included attached plugs for different devices. Chez went out of her way looking at the back room inventory and her pervasiveness in making sure things were compatible was outstanding. Although most staffers are friendly here, this was the first time someone went of their way to go beyond and I appreciate Chez' efforts so much to compel Me to write this review. Wowza! Talk about a place that has IT ALL!! you need not go any further. A beautiful, unique gift shop that just so happens to be a Bookstore as well as a Stationery haven!! I went in yesterday as a part of the San Diego Bookstore Crawl and it was packed (Independent Bookstore weekend) but let me tell you the jewelry, pottery, gorgeous bags, unique bookends, etc. just took my breath away. Staff were friendly and so helpful as they understood we were on a time constraint (we were on buses and only had 30 minutes to peruse). I will be returning when I am in the area again. I went to buy JD Vance's new book and was basically told not to buy it and to leave. I've shopped there for years and spent thousands of dollars. No more and I will tell everyone not to go there. Service // The service at Warwicks is always the best. Although this time I didn't need assistance, in the past I have always been assisted well. All the staff members engage with the customers and are very knowledgeable - they will almost always be able to answer questions regarding their products. Selection // The selection here is so broad that I don't know where to start. From stationery, books, art supplies, trinkets and more, Warwicks feels like Santa's shop. I am always blown away by the extensive selection of stationery products. They have many niche brands and products and I was absolutely blown away when I found my favorite Japanese illustrator's stickers here! Value // There is no doubt in the value of the products, the selection and the ambiance here. The store is nice but doesn't scream family or independently owned. It felt more like a chain bookstore. They do have a wide selection of books in all different genres and some gifts, stationary, and pens. Nothing particularly wrong with them, it just wasn't what I had expected. read more

Such a cute shop in La Jolla! Stopped by to pick up planners for the new years. They had a wide variety of books, journals, stationary accessories and other cute trinkets. I have been a loyal customer of Warwicks for many years and have long considered it my favorite bookstore in San Diego. I have spent a great deal of money there over the years, buying books, gifts, and stationery, and I typically visit at least once a month, if not more. Writing this review is something I truly did not want to do. On December 9th, 2025, I had a very upsetting experience with an employee, Lizeht. Throughout the interaction, she was repeatedly rude and harsh, not only toward me but also toward her coworkers. Watching the way she spoke to her colleagues was particularly uncomfortable and honestly worse than how she spoke to me. In addition, she told me she would switch out a pen cartridge, as the pen was a display and a gift, and she did not do so. Because I care about this store and its employees, I reached out privately to share my concerns rather than leaving a public review. Unfortunately, that process was equally frustrating. In the responses I received, my experience felt minimized and dismissed. Rather than addressing the behavior I described, the focus was placed on defending the employee. I was told that "Lizeht is held in very high regard by all the staff and is generally great with customers," which felt like my concerns were being brushed aside. I went back and forth with the general manager trying to resolve the situation. After I explained that I no longer felt comfortable shopping there, he acknowledged that and suggested I return the items by sending a photo of my receipt and mailing them back, since he understood why I would not want to come into the store. I agreed and said that was fine. After that, I was never given instructions on how to proceed, and my follow-up messages went unanswered. I genuinely tried to work with him, but the communication simply stopped. I am deeply disappointed to be leaving this review. Warwicks has been a place I loved and supported for years. However, the way this situation was handled, from the employee's behavior to management's response and lack of follow-through, has made me feel that my loyalty and concerns were not valued. I hope this is taken seriously so that future customers and employees are treated with the respect that used to define this store. read more

Went here to find vacation reads for the whole family and found a great selection of fiction and non-fiction for both kids and adults. Minutes after we left the shop, I left our bag of new book purchases AND my wallet by a fountain serveral blocks away and some very good people passing by brought them back to the shop. Joe, one of the staff, did some very quick thinking and called the credit card company who alerted me! Saved me from complete panic and can't wait to shop here again. Forever grateful. read more

This is certainly one of the most fun stores in San Diego. Half the store displays books, the other half is more eclectic, with fine writing implements, fun jewelry, some sundries and household goods, gifty things, and a wonderful selection of writing/drawing/art supplies. The books are carefully selected, some more unusual, including many that you won't find in other stores (or even the public libraries!). (During the Pandemic, I was looking for a book (The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows) that everyone, even Amazon, was sold out of, but Warwick's had copies!) Good customer service. Get on their email list for announcements of speakers, etc. You could easily spend hundreds of dollars here in a pop. read more

Went in for the first time today and they did not have what I wanted. That's not really a big deal as it's close to Christmas and I can imagine hot items will run out. Kinda sucked cause I drove an hour. But what really upset me was that I went in to buy a pen. I've gotten really into fountain pens recently and wanted to see them and make a purchase. But what stopped me in my tracks was my mom feeling super uncomfortable as she was being followed around the store by a woman who worked there in all black and a scarf. To note we were already being helped by a really nice lady who was very kind and attentive. But this woman kept standing behind aisles and making her feel like a criminal. My mother is 68 and it is really discouraging to feel so unwelcome in an establishment especially in 2025 going on 26. I don't think I'll be back. read more

Had to stop by after finding out its the oldest consecutively family-run bookstore in the nation! It's a cute little place on a nice street in La Jolla, not too far from the beach. Street parking can be hard, but we got lucky and got a spot just as someone was leaving. They sell a lot of knick-knacks and art supplies in addition to books. The selection of books seems more random than curated. Reminded me more of a secondhand bookstore than one that carries new. Organization of books wasn't super intuitive either. Good displays but not many labels. Children's area was super cute! The worker ladies were chatting it up while I was browsing. A littttle unfriendly at the cashier, but hey I was just there to buy a book so that's fine. Glad I visited! read more

Warwick's is the oldest continuously family-owned and operated bookstore in the United States - Here's the story: Warwick's founder, William T. Warwick was born in Atlantic, Iowa in 1867. The day after his High School graduation in 1886, he got a job working for the Des Moines Book Company, thus beginning his seven decades as a bookseller. After three years working in the Des Moines store, he moved on to manage their Sioux Falls branch for the following seven years. In 1896, he purchased his own store in Mankato, Minnesota, christened it "Warwick's" and remained there until 1916, when he moved to Waterloo, Iowa, taking his wife, two sons, and the shop with him. Meanwhile, in La Jolla...  Redding's Book Store was founded in 1902 and was operated by Mr. E.L. Redding and his wife Genevieve. Redding's was originally on Cave Street and later moved into the W.C. Sheppard Building on the corner of Wall and Girard (the building was demolished & replaced in 1985.) Around 1921, the Reddings again moved their shop to a building owned by the Corey family at 7816 Girard Avenue - essentially the current location of the store. E.L. died suddenly in 1934 and Genevieve continued to operate Redding's on her own. In 1939, W.T. Warwick, who had a sister living in La Jolla, sold his store in Waterloo, purchased Redding's from Genevieve, & renamed it Warwick's. W.T. and Genevieve were later married. As you walk inside, you can noticed the quality items they sell, it is a great gift shop besides being a top notch bookstore. I wanted to share some feedback about a recent visit to your store. I was genuinely excited to pick up some Traveler's Notebook refills, but the checkout experience left me feeling ignored and dismissed. While waiting in line, I didn't mind that the clerk was chatting with another customer--I actually enjoy a little small talk in stores! However, I found it really off-putting when the clerk reached out for my items without even acknowledging me, continuing her conversation. Once I was at the counter, she didn't greet me or make any eye contact, instead talking with a coworker about dinner plans while scanning my items. It was disappointing to feel like an afterthought during what should have been a fun shopping experience. I really love the products you carry, but I'll likely shop online from now on if this is what I can expect in person. read more

First time at Warwick's in La Jolla. It looked like a fun place to visit whilst window shopping and it was. They had a huge book collection in half the store whilst the other half had every Knick-knack known to mankind. They had beach umbrellas, pencil erasers, STEM projects, school supplies, souvenirs, collectibles, beach gear and everything else you could imagine.
