Indie Bookstore

Where do you go when you want a solid selection of books, jewelry, and every type of knickknack in between in downtown La Jolla? Warwick's, the oldest bookstore in San Diego. The staff is friendly, and the prices are comparable to other shops in downtown La Jolla.

One of my favorite bookstores of all San Diego. I like how they decorate the store, the smell, the books they carry and the huge amount of stationary and writing supplies. It is my temptation every time I am walking in downtown La Jolla. Impossible not to get out empty handed. They also do different activities and it is just a pleasant store not chain that still makes us dream of a time when stores were unique and not cookie cutter. Keep it that way!

Busy on a Saturday.

Warwick's was founded in 1896. Ponder that one. That was 130 years ago. My guess is downtown La Jolla, where the store is located, looked a little different back then. Their website says that Warwick's is the oldest continuously family-owned and operated bookstore in the entire country. It even has a Wikipedia page. So, yeah, it is kind of famous. The store itself is divided into two halves: books on one side, cards, stationary, paper, office supplies, and knickknacks on the other. The different sections in the bookstore are well organized and the place is not that big where you can get lost. The selection is well curated and you can tell these people like books. It is not just another business to them. I am almost always going to buy from a real bookstore, and hopefully an independent one, rather than from a big impersonal online seller, if I can. So, long live Warwick's. Come visit a little slice of history.

Warwick's in La Jolla has had a long presence in this community. This shop has every category of books, reference books, the top best sellers, and other things like toys, jewelry, art and office supplies all reasonably priced. It's always neat and organized inside and outside, the shop has nice curb appeal. I always find free street parking out front. As recent as last week, my iphone desperately needed charging and I was no where near home, office or my vehicle to charge it. Luckily, Warwick's happened to have a tech section. With the help of a staffer named Chez, she helped me find the perfect one which included attached plugs for different devices. Chez went out of her way looking at the back room inventory and her pervasiveness in making sure things were compatible was outstanding. Although most staffers are friendly here, this was the first time someone went of their way to go beyond and I appreciate Chez' efforts so much to compel Me to write this review. Although I frequent this shop more often than I care to admit, I value people's efforts and want to highlight that as the premise of this review. Thanks Chez and thanks Warwick's !! Recommend

Wowza! Talk about a place that has IT ALL!! you need not go any further. A beautiful, unique gift shop that just so happens to be a Bookstore as well as a Stationery haven!! I went in yesterday as a part of the San Diego Bookstore Crawl and it was packed (Independent Bookstore weekend) but let me tell you the jewelry, pottery, gorgeous bags, unique bookends, etc. just took my breath away. Staff were friendly and so helpful as they understood we were on a time constraint (we were on buses and only had 30 minutes to peruse). I will be returning when I am in the area again. Respectfully Reviewed.

Service // The service at Warwicks is always the best. Although this time I didn't need assistance, in the past I have always been assisted well. All the staff members engage with the customers and are very knowledgeable - they will almost always be able to answer questions regarding their products. Selection // The selection here is so broad that I don't know where to start. From stationery, books, art supplies, trinkets and more, Warwicks feels like Santa's shop. I am always blown away by the extensive selection of stationery products. They have many niche brands and products and I was absolutely blown away when I found my favorite Japanese illustrator's stickers here! Value // There is no doubt in the value of the products, the selection and the ambiance here. Warwicks is and will continue to be one of my favorite bookstores and I look forward to coming again.

Went here to find vacation reads for the whole family and found a great selection of fiction and non-fiction for both kids and adults. Minutes after we left the shop, I left our bag of new book purchases AND my wallet by a fountain serveral blocks away and some very good people passing by brought them back to the shop. Joe, one of the staff, did some very quick thinking and called the credit card company who alerted me! Saved me from complete panic and can't wait to shop here again. Forever grateful.

Lizette was amazing! She was so nice, knowedgable, and patient! Very informative about pens + let me try her personal ones because I was so indecisive. Awesome employee and others were also so sweet and kind. Great store, stop by if you need some stationary or a gift for someone! Will be coming back! Lizette is THAT girl!! :)

This is not OK This is a disgrace to the Christian and Catholic community. Please take this down or we will have everyone put a bad review

I was also informed of sloped floors and uneven areas since I am a cane user which I GREATLY appreciated. This store is stacked with literature and poetry, I'd say that's definitely their forte here. Their lit section for new releases is huge and they had so many different editions for so many popular literature books. They also had a lot of lit and non fiction used options. Everything is great pricing. Basically either list or discounted for used items. The store is cozy and small with memories, photos, and clippings everywhere on the walls. It you are a wheelchair user it is not accessible for you, but if you use a mobility aid like a cane or crutch you can manage. There are very small tight sections. Next time I'm in the market for a classic book, this will be my go to.

I personally love to take pictures, especially on vacation. As do many others. When we came in, they literally have a gate to enter the book part (talk about gatekeeping in real life lol). They give you a set of rules before you enter and there are signs that you can't take pictures. Only once you listen to those rules can you enter... I overheard the men working here complaining about young people taking pictures in front of their book cases outside while a young girl was doing just that. Basically making fun of anyone who does that. I said "you all have a beautiful place, it's so photo worthy." They just said ya, but if you're not looking for books then don't come in here and start taking pictures. lol - can you not do both....? They didn't have the book I was looking for, I was going to buy a journal but ended up not wanting to after hearing all that negativity. 2 stars simply because the space is pretty. Enjoy the pics:)

Unfortunately I've been to too many B&Ns that had creases on the covers, nicks on the corners, and ruined bindings. Pretty sure a lot of these flaws come from customers who read the books in the store and just return them, ruining it for the rest of us who actually buy. Not only that I was able to find books I've been looking for such as The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Grey, Moonstone, The Woman in White, and War and Peace (War and Peace isn't a difficult title to find, but they had tons of copies of this book, which I almost never see!). I'm a little annoyed by some of the reviews complaining about the lack of Starbucks. I come in here to buy books; if you want to read go to the Starbucks upstairs next to Trader Joe's/Ralphs. Better yet, support your local library if you want to read for free and flatten book bindings at your leisure.

As others have noted... there doesn't seem to be a Starbucks and seating is rather limited. Some sections were a bit more limited in selection than what you can find at larger bookstores. But overall, it was a good experience. I'll be back.

The highlight of my visit was my session with Arturo. It is honestly hard to put into words how gifted he is. His readings blend tarot, energy work, numerology, and a level of spiritual insight that goes far beyond a typical session. He is incredibly accurate and has a way of seeing into you that feels both grounding and eye-opening. You can feel that he is tuned in the moment he looks at you. We have seen many spiritual workers, mediums, and healers over the years, including well-known ones that had their own TV show. Arturo was just as aligned and consistent as the best of them, especially when it came to past life lineage, soul contracts, and aura interpretation. He picked up so much from even the smallest details, and every one of us walked away blown away. Since my session, I have already sent a friend to see him, and she had the same experience. Arturo is honest, detailed, and extremely thoughtful. He does not rush you or cut things short because the clock hits a certain time. He genuinely cares about delivering the message and sharing what he sees. He also brings humor and warmth into the reading, which makes the whole experience feel safe and uplifting. We all left feeling lighter, more aware, and even joked that seeing Arturo is like having a medium and a therapist all in one. If you are curious or even slightly drawn to it, I truly recommend booking a session. I am sure you will find it more than worth it.

I've never had a tarot reading or even been in a metaphysical bookstore, so wow it was a pretty cool first experience.
