Warwick's is hanging in there through this horrible covid-19 pandemic. For them, it's a double whammy, because Amazon has crushed lots of local bookstores, and Covid has prevented a lot of in-person shopping. That said, Warwick's was pretty packed this afternoon when I stopped in to check out some travel books. Yes, I intend to resume traveling as soon as I can. As soon as the world opens up. One of the things these folks have going for them is a nice availability of knick-knacks, office supplies, and greeting cards. It's a very chill environment in Warwick's. You're more than welcome to come in and browse, glance through the merchandise, and pick up a few things that you might need for the office. The final reason that I really love Warwick's is because it's a local business that needs our support. And they do a really good job of supporting the neighborhood. I have been a customer at Warwick's La Jolla for over 11 years. One of my favorite memories is of taking my children to Warwick's after school. They would pick out the best books. I recently required assistance in picking out a variety of books for an advanced course I was taking. Tammy at Warwick's took the time to listen to me and recommended the best books. I have asked her for more recommendations and every time I enjoyed her recommendations. I love the variety of books from young to adult as well as the ambiance of the store. Searching for a few new coffee table books and a few good reads, I found Warwick's! Found a few books for myself that I am currently reading; husband found half a dozen; son found 3 new books (vast kids selection and play area in back); also found 1 of the 5 coffee table books I wanted. They carry Parker ink, which was a surprise given how many stationary shops fail to carry ink! Picked some up. They have gorgeous mobiles hanging in the back, which I found myself needing. There are many different styles and sizes. I picked up two for a couple babies we love. I was tempted to pick up a third for my son, large airplane mobile, who is 2, simply to use as decor in his room. The larger ones are beautiful and can be used as decor for toddlers/children. I ordered books over the phone, then went to pick up once they arrived. I'd heard about this bookstore, but never went before until now. Glad they offer this order and pickup service. It's a bookstore, gift shop, and stationary store. I liked the stationery area, because it reminded me of old stationery stores I used to go to as a child. The books seemed to be geared toward the local wealthy women, as there were many books about home decor, gardening, art, and fiction. Customer service was courteous. Tons of my friends in book club love this place. I expect it to be entirely a bookstore but found it to be half gift shop half bookstore to my suprise. Decent selection of books but lacked a range YA novels, this place is definitely aimed to older women and not really young adults or teens. The staff seemed kinda annoyed I was looking at all the books, not sure why. Overall I ended up not buying anything. It wasn't my kinda place but I definitely see why people like it. read more

I was very turned off by Warwicks last night. We went in 5 minutes before they were closing. Didn't know they were about to close. My wife specifically wanted a certain book and knew exactly where it was on the shelf. They turned the lights off and continued to reiterate they were closing. Yuck. You're still open...... My wife makes an effort to buy her books from this store and support local. She buys tickets to their events and yes, when they have the pity "we're closing for the 100th time" sign out, we support them. Don't ask us to support a local book store if you're going to shoo us away. Such a joke. We will go buy this book at another book store. read more

My last pre-quarantine outing was on March 11, when I drove down to Warwick's in La Jolla to interview my friend Elizabeth Little about her fantastic new novel, Pretty as a Picture. It was my first time at Warwick's, a wonderful independent store that has been very kind to me and my own book, which was a staff selection around the holidays. I was glad I got to go before everything shut down, and I will be terribly upset if this store isn't back in business when we emerge from this nightmare. Warwick's is on a charming stretch of downtown La Jolla, and I imagine that under normal circumstances, it gets a good deal of foot traffic. It's a beautiful bookstore, large and inviting, with tons of nice gift items in addition to a thorough, well-curated selection of books. I wish I'd had more time to browse when I was there. Had I known I would stop leaving my house the next day, I might have delayed my drive home to look around and buy some reading material (not that I lack for reading material, but I do so love browsing and buying books). The event was a lot of fun, and I was impressed with the turnout, given building coronavirus anxiety. It was Liz's last event before her tour was cut short, and I was happy I got to interview her. The staff could not have been more lovely or enthusiastic. Warwick's is closed for walk-in business, but you can still order books online and over the phone. Delivery is free in La Jolla, and you can also get free media mail shipping if you're just ordering books. (If you need suggestions, I happen to know that Warwick's has signed copies of both Liz's and my novels.) I love coming here. Warwick's is so close to the beach and right in the middle of all of these lovely shops. This is a great place to buy a book and go read by the beach or at a nearby coffee shop. The decor on the outside is inviting and they even have a dedicated stationary section inside the store where you pick up cool postcards. They're very big on building community and even have events scheduled around their booksellers and local authors. It's a really nice bookish community and I enjoy being in their shop. read more

I truly went into the store excited and like I was stepping into my dream store. however, within 10 minutes of being in the store, I felt profiled and targeted as a brown latina by their employees after picking up a clock and putting it back on the same shelf. I was accused of stealing, they wanted to search my bag, and after finding nothing, they did not apologize until I was near the cash register to pay, and only came to apologize because they had found the misplaced clock -- which is what they should have done in the first place, instead of making me feel unsafe and uncomfortable in their store. When confronted about the way I had felt targeted as a person of color, the manager claimed that she had people of color working for her, and that they had just had a team discussion about how they wanted to check in on customers in case they needed something -- mind you, 3 times within the span of 5 minutes is not necessary -- and having an employee in every aisle I wandered is called being watched. Lastly, I'd like to ask the manager to learn how to apologize -- when you apologize, take ownership of the hurt you caused. "I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable." No-- I made it clear you made me feel targeted and uncomfortable -- so it's not an if, it's that you did. to everyone that I interacted with, I hope you realize your white privilege in being able to step into a predominantly white space and feel no fear of false accusations, of stares, and being followed in a store. I hope you use this as a learning moment for the racism and biases you may not know you hold. objectivity, for those interested, this was how the events took place: I picked up a clock and noted how cute it was to my partner, and we put it back next to the other exact same clocks. maybe 3-5 minutes later, an employee comes up to me and asks if I liked the clock, and if I put it back. I say I was still deciding if I wanted to buy it, but yeah, I put it back. Her response, "uhh okay," seemed as though she didn't believe me, and I immediately felt uncomfortable. As I continued to roam the aisles, I had multiple employees, at least 3 different people within the span of 5-10 minutes, ask if I needed anything as they stayed in the same aisles I roamed. I kept saying I was fine, and thanked them. I noticed a woman come out of the back office, and ask her co-worker ask "Who are we looking at?" and shortly after, came and asked me if I needed help with the clock. I repeated the same thing I said earlier, and when she claimed the clock was gone, I asked if I wanted she wanted to search my bag, because I had not left the store. upon finding nothing, she thanked me, and walked away. I walked away not knowing whether to leave or continue browsing, because I was genuinely excited to buy the things I had found. later, the manager came to thank me being "so kind" about the situation, but I let her know how targeted, uncomfortable, and unsafe I felt as one of the few people of color in her store. She told me that she actually had people of color working in her store, but clearly, that didn't make for the way I had felt. She proceeded to give a bad apology, as detailed above. So, all in all, black and brown folk, beware of this predominantly white space. at least amazon doesn't make me want to cry while I'm shopping. read more

I drive an hour just to buy books at Warwicks. What can I say? Books are my love language and feed my soul. The staff are friendly and make good recommendations and I love supporting an independent bookstore rather than lazily ordering off of online retailers. The store is always well stocked and parking is easy in the neighborhood, even on busy weekends. read more

Love this bookstore in downtown La Jolla. One of the last "mom & pop" stores from the olden days. Lol. Great customer service. Great author events. They will order anything you want. I personally like to gift shop here. On the other side of the store is the gift shop card shop and the tchotchkes are awesome. Nice stationary, cool jewelry, and the cherry on the cake for me was an entire aisle dedicated to small wooden boxes. See pic. I like the pens and the leather accessories they sell as well. Great card selection and wrapping paper sold by the sheet in that thick awesome type of paper. I can't think of a single negative about this place. read more

An independent bookstore with more than half of it dedicated to a gift shop. This leaves a pretty small selection for the actual books, but still the shop itself is well organized and interesting. I did manage to find a few books I liked. One drawback would be the very loud and moderately unhelpful employees, but despite this I was still happy to support an independent bookstore. Interesting place to check out if you're already in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way just to visit this store. read more

Warwick's is one of the best bookstores I have been in for a very long time. It has cards, stationary, and books. Lots of books and not just the best sellers. You see, this is an old style bookstore, where they carry the books you might not have heard of and the ones you will want to explore and buy. That's what I did. I never heard of the "The Paris Wife", by Paula McLain until I bought it here (photo). It's a historical fictional based on Left Bank life and Gertude Stein's little group in the 1920s. I couldn't put it down and would recommend it to you. These bookstores are a dying breed and have a strong following among book lovers who don't want to go to the B&N at the mall or shop online. Actually, Amazon just opened one at the outdoor Westfield UTC mall nearby. I wasn't impressed, but more on that later. Great place for gifts! We wandered into this shop on accident and they have so much fun stuff! From office supplies and fancy pens to Hydroflasks. My boyfriend bought his mother a cheese board with two pewter mice that went with. I could spend days in this store. I also picked up a nice HOBO wallet. Very eclectic shop. Cute book shop that was more spacious inside than I thought it would be from the inside. I visited on a warm day but it was nice and cool inside. Love the variety and collections of books. I also liked that there are little tags on the books that say the books are recommended by staff members - definitely useful when I'm indecisive about books. I was shopping in the childrens section and was pleasantly surprised at all thr great picks for kids. You have cloth books and bath friendly books for the littlest ones all the way to trending books for teens. I saw some nice collectable versions of classical I have not seen sold anywhere else. There is also a half a shop dedicated to home goods, gifts, and greeting cards. I'd say this is a shop where you can easily find a gift for someone who likes to read, someone who likes feminine things, or for young kids. read more

This bookstore is not safe for people of color. Look at the reviews on Google, the low star reviews on here, and at my review below. When I visited with a friend the other day, we were the only people of color in the store and were constantly watched by all the workers. This culminated in the manager confronting my friend and accused her of stealing a clock (my friend did not steal the clock) with no apparent basis backing her accusatory claims. If you look at this review and multiple low star reviews on Google and on here, you will see that there is a recurring pattern of this bookstore not trusting and treating people of color poorly and in all honestly, in a racist manner. If you are a person of color, protect your energy and save your money for another store. read more

Whenever I visit La Jolla, this is one of the shops I always look forward to visiting. (As well as the one at the San Diego airport). Half the store is a book shop with different genres such as Travel, Children's, Gardening, History, etc. The other half is a high-end stationery and gift store with a superb collection of greeting cards. Not your average sickly strip-mall card store cards, but very unique cards with beautiful artwork. If you want to find an unusual card for that special someone, I suggest going to Warwicks. Shout-out to the lady who politely and respectfully asked a selfish fart of a man to wear a mask even though he complained that "they like to use their authority over us because this is the only place where they can use it." To be honest I've never bought a book from here so I can't speak to how good the book selection is but as a book and gift store, this is a Lamborghini. This store offers more cards than a typical Papyrus or Hallmark, a large selection of handmade jewelry by local artists, a pen selection that I have not seen rivaled (and you can buy just one!), custom printing, wrapping paper, and everything from wallets and briefcases to table linens and hand-painted ceramics to picture frames and infant toys. This place is a true gift shop - you are sure to find a gift for your loved one, coworker, accountant, or the mail man here. In addition, the bookstore seems to regularly hold a book signing by a famous author. Come check it out and if you ever need a gift stop in here. I always make sure to visit Warwick's when I am in La Jolla, as I inevitably find wonderful cards and gifts for my friends! (and something for me!!) I am almost embarrassed to say how much I got at Warwick's yesterday, but let me just say that it ranged from greeting cards to an iPhone cord to a children's book to a purse! Was just chased out of the store. It was 5:24 when we entered, they closed at 5:30, which I completely understand as I've worked in retail before. We had no idea they were closing when we walked in as there were about 20 people in the store. The lights were turned off immediately and doors were being locked. We tried just doing a quick look since it seemed so cute, but I was asked not so nicely if there was something I was looking for. I said, "No thanks we're leaving," and we were promptly followed out of the store with a lock behind us at 5:28. Will not be returning even though I'm a huge book lover. Very unfortunate. read more

Fantastic little gift shop and bookstore that has been in La Jolla for ages! Great selection of jewelry and gifts and a variety of books and stationary! Always love the different Exotic Sands collections and occasional locally crafted items. Fun selections of cards for all occasions. The children's book selection is fabulous and there are cozy little chairs to sit for brief story time. Frequently there are signings with local authors to check-out and there are signs throughout the store indicating favorite books of staff that are fun to keep an eye out for when looking for something new to reach. If calligraphy is more your jam there is a gorgeous assortment of products for all skill levels. Whenever we are close enough to drop by we stop for a browse in Warwicks...rarely (if ever) do I leave without goodies in hand. read more

Everyone that works in the book section writes reviews. Their children's section is the best I've seen. I bring my daughters here to select their books, because their recommendations for children's books are spot on as well. However, I have two issues with this store: 1. They close too early for me on weekdays and will rush you out even if you are still picking a book. 2. There are a few sales people that seem a bit conceited and thrifty. I am a teacher and use most of the books I buy for my classroom. Everytime I'm there, they question my book choices, then refuse to give me my discount. read more

I went there for a notebook and walked out with my favorite fountain pen ever (Pilot Vanishing Point). I was very impressed by the folks behind the counter. They really know their stuff regarding fountain pens and pens in general. They also have a great selection of notebooks and writing paper. Cute bookstore in downtown La Jolla near my extended family's condo. They have a lot more here than just books. The book selection is good but rather small. They don't list the nonfiction bestsellers anywhere which can be a bit frustrating for someone who wants to know what other people are reading. read more
