A SPECIAL PLACE TO TASTE CULTURES AND FOOD. Even when you are outside of Boston you might be in the mood for a meal that is different than what you expected. Maybe you want a bit of Italian food. Or maybe it is Latin food but not fully Mexican. You can not tell, but you know you want something different. It that is the case then you need to take a back road and look for something different. When doing this with friends we found a small place that looked like a hole int he wall. No cars outside. No one inside it seemed. But when the clock hit 6pm the people started to arrive. And in large numbers. We were lucky to have a reservation and get a table when we stepped inside. Inside it was different. Papagallo is a truly family restaurant. Even the younger of the family managed the front counter to check-in. We then went to the table with our menus. This is where we started. And it is some menu to consider. There is everything. You can find Italian, South American with specialties from Columbia. There is fish, meats, and even vegan if desired. It is all there. It can be a way to combine meals from all regions that you can try. Nothing will stop you. It also helps that the waiter will tell you of the specialties of the day and answer any questions you might have. And he will go into detail on this. And he can take your order without writing it down. Of course, the first thing to do is order a drink if you wish. They do have a bartender how can make anything. Naturally a good way to start is with a dry martini. That was filled to the top of the glass. It was ideal. We also had some special Spritz cocktails that were good and strong, but sweet enough to start the meal. Starting with appetizers we did have calamari which was not traditional Italian style. It was more Colombian in nature. It is lightly breaded, fried and tossed with garlic wine butter, sliced cherry peppers and tomatoes. Finished with a dash of parmesan cheese. But, it does have a spicy twist to it. And they were perfect. We also had an order of zucchini flowers that were covered and fried. These are rare to come by. Many restaurants do not even offer these or know how to make them. This was special as no one makes this except at home if you grow the zucchini. This was great. For the main entrees we went all over the place. A bit of everything that we could share and enjoy together. It was that good to share and experience. The special course was the Mofongo Relleno. It is a Puerto Rican favorite consisting of fried, mashed green plantains with garlic, olive oil and Chicharrónes. It is then sautéed with peppers and onions stuffed with chicken. It is a simple dish but nothing you can ever have outside of a Puerto Rican restaurant. And here it is alongside Italian dishes and New England seafood. Next up was Haddock Florentine. This was different. It is baked haddock topped with spinach, grape tomatoes, and crispy bacon in a lemon wine butter sauce. Served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The sauce is a mixture with Pinot Grigio. It is tasty and light with just enough flavoring. From this we went to Salmon Oscar. It is grilled Atlantic Salmon served over Lobster ravioli with mushrooms, grape tomatoes, and asparagus in a sherry cream sauce. It was truly fresh with fresh caught salmon. It was a good taste with a good portion to go with. The meals were truly enjoyable and had a special taste. Cooked fresh you could have more since the portions were ideal. Naturally, after the meal there is time for dessert. Starting with an express, what more could you want. There was Italian desserts and South American desserts. But this being a special time we went for the Tres Leches. A tres leches cake is a sponge cake originating in North, Central, and South America soaked in milk. It is a very light cake with many air bubbles. This distinct texture is why it does not have a soggy consistency despite being soaked in a mixture of three types of milk. We also had the Pistachio Cake. This is a special cake that is truly light to the touch. Moist, fluffy pistachio cake made with a yogurt batter base and topped with a pistachio butter glaze is an elegant, but easy dessert. Toasting and grinding the pistachios yourself adds a little work, but results in a deep, rich, roasted pistachio flavor. In the end, this was a special meal to have on a special gathering with friends. It was a place hidden down a street not far from where we were but never knew of. The family is wonderful. They run this shop from the front door and into the kitchen. It is their way of presenting a taste and style many of us will never even know of. The meals are good. The portions are excellent. We really enjoyed being able to show up last minute and get seated by cheerful staff. The place was hopping with joyful energy and happy patrons. Our server was lovely and made some recommendations. We tried the spicy and sweet calamari app and shrimp fajitas and I tried their famous mofongo with shrimp. I was so glad to try this - the outer crunchy plaintains were perfectly seasoned and the jumbo shrimp were cooked just right. The sauce made me want to lick my plate. The cocktails were generous and beautiful. So luck to have such a great place to eat nearby with a huge assortment of offerings. The food came out quickly and we were done in less than an hour. Came here with a couple friends. I've been here a handful of times but it was new to them so I was excited to share it. I've had good experiences here each time, including this one. The service is polite and pretty attentive. It was very busy on a Friday night, they probably could have used another person waiting on tables because we did wait a little bit for water at points and the food took quite a while to come out. It's a casual spot, ambiance screams business casual but no one bats an eye if you show up in a hoody or a t-shirt. Just not a sweatpants and gym shorts kind of place. Complimentary bread with some seasoned olive oil, nice touch (always a way to an Italians heart), and the bread was actually pretty good, served warm, fluffy and crusty. I went astray and got the carne asada. I'd usually get a more exciting dish but it's not often I order steak out and wanted something on the lighter side. I really enjoyed the puerto rican stewed pink beans. The potato, tomato base and the diced bacon in there was delicious. Having bites of this spread over the rice with the fresh pico along with a small bite of steak was a very nice and tasty combo. The skirt steak itself was honestly underwhelming. It wasn't seasoned well, could have used some salt. It was cooked how I requested, medium rare, but boy, it took a lot of chewing to eat this. Cut against the grain, small thin bits, with the grain, nothing helped make this feel more tender. It took me a long time to eat it. I certainly wouldn't order it again. I would likely get the Pollo asado next time since it comes with the same sides and instead of skirt steak, a half chicken. This skirt steak was definitely an inside skirt steak, which is super tough and chewy and takes more prep to tenderize. Unfortunately, they didn't do that extra work, evident by the tired jaw I had upon finishing my plate. Regardless, it's one subpar meal vs the several great ones I've had over the years. Plus, the prices here are so reasonable. $22 for carne asada. Most entrées are around the low-$20-mark, making the value here very good. Just be selective with your choices. Everyone has a bad day, hopefully this was one of them, my husband ordered medium and got raw, cold blue center, he sent it back, they just put the whole plate under heat lamp, so the steak came back rare and everything else overcooked. Went there with a friend for lunch. It was super dead on a Sunday at like 2pm which I liked lol We sat at the bar. The bartender was approachable but because it was so dead I didn't feel like he was super attentive. Still good but that's honestly my only complaint. Other than that the food was SOOOOOO GOOD!!! I sought out this place this weekend with a friend having remembered them for great food from 8 years ago. This is not in my neck of the woods. I had the Salvadoran Enchiladas with ground beef. These are nothing like the Mexican ones I'm familiar with. The flat corn tortillas were crispy and topped with perfectly seasoned beef, refried beans, orange peppers, onions, cabbage, avocado slice and hard boiled egg slice. Sloppy to eat but delicious! My friend enjoyed her Salvadoran Carne Asada which came with white rice and pico de gallo with white beans. She was just as pleased as o was with the food. The dessert menu looked inviting, but we decided to be good and pass on it. Consider this a 4 1/2 star review. The bathroom was a disappointment, but not too bad. My husband and I stopped here for the first time today for lunch. It was very quiet on a Tuesday at lunchtime. The service was super quick and the server was very friendly. My husband got the chicken tortilla soup and he loved it! I had the lunch portion of the chicken fra diablo. It was honestly the best fra diablo sauce that I've ever had!! I came here again on Valentine's Day, and I was still so impressed. The service here is phenomenal. Our waitress was fabulous. She was very attentive, caring, and she really accommodated us. It was a special for the night, and it was so good!! For my meal, I had the conejo which was a rabbit dish. It was something I never had before so I wanted to try it. It came with white sticky rice, refried beans, and tortillas. I didn't care too much for the beans or tortillas, but I'm not much of a taco person. My girlfriend had the veal Marsala. Our entrees were delicious...5 stars. Our service was awful. On 9/1 about 4:45pm, we started with the "pan-fried" zucchini blossoms. We read pan-fried as a lite saute in minimal oil. What we received was a "deep-fried" breaded oval where the zucchini and any filling had all but disappeared. We commented that it was not what we had anticipated and did not want it. Our waitress, who wears a corset, and perhaps our age (late 50's) though neither important, just because we did not have her name, looked visibly annoyed that we did not want the appetizer and asked why. After explaining the perceived discrepancy between the menu stating "pan-fried" and the actual breaded and fully "deep-fried" and that there was nothing left in the breading, she began to argue with me/us that there was no difference and the menu description was correct and that she was correct, and that I was wrong. Really? Perhaps a cultural difference in interpretation, I don't really know, but she continued to "tell" us that there was no difference, and finally walked away shaking her head. Really? She reluctantly took it off the bill and we let her attitude be. Well, after I finished enough of my meal and my wife was still well into her meal, she stopped over and asked if I wanted a box. I said not right now, my wife is still eating. So she asked if I wanted a box for her, too. I was annoyed and said Not right now, my wife is still eating! She walked away, never to come back again. If they read this, I can only hope they can understand that it is considered rude, at least in my book, to clear plates or ask if you want a to-go box before all have finished their meal, otherwise you make the patron feel RUSHED. Perhaps that was her intention. Well, when we had finished, I had to get up to ask for the box and the bill. The man at the door saw that I got up and came over with a box and proceeding to say "Now you want a box." I asked "Excuse me." He proceeded to tell me that I should have either accepted the box initially...or just have said "no" which I did, but she persisted. He was RUDE and out-of-line. She was RUDE and disrespectful. I thought about calling the owner that we knew, but came to find out that this lovely family-owned business is run by the brother's and sisters...and figured the man at the front was also a brother and would unlikely care about our comments/complaints. Perhaps posting this might open his and the server's eyes, but I doubt it. A past reviewer, who also found him rude, noted that he was the guy with tattoos, which we all have, so only a description as I did not get his name.) The menu at this restaurant has someone to satisfy most anyone's palate as it has a wide variety of cuisines from the Caribbean and Central America to Italy to American and many more. We started with the Fried Plantains along with the Eggplant stack. The stack was just a pile of eggplants that would typically go on a pile of noodles for an Eggplant Parmesan. For dinner, I had the Mofongo Relleno with steak which was okay, but I have had better as this one had corn blended in. My husband had the Fried Shrimp Platter which was average. For dessert, we shared the Tres Leche Cake which was much more cake than the 'tres leche'. All dishes were presented nicely. The flavors of each dish were decent but did not jump on your palate. It's interesting that this place is on Pleasant Street since the people who work there are anything but pleasant. I went with my new boyfriend for a nice time out and the waitress was rude and acted annoyed when I asked for something. I also heard someone who was either the owner or manager raising his voice and being so rude to another patron that I was in shock. We have been going to Papagallos for YEARS, to the point we know some of the staff. I often get my parents gift cards, enjoy meals with friends there, recommend it to all local friends who want to try something different. Unfortunately, the service and treatment by ONE worker, who might be part owner has ruined it for me. A group of family and friends decided to meet up at Papagallos, quite a large group for the small restaurant, 15 of us total. We called to let them know days before and made reservations. We were seated in the overflow room they have beyond main dining space. Not sure where else we would of all sat down as it was an unusually busy night. At the end of the two hour dinner, the part-owner(?) shuffles into overflow space loudly asking "Who arranged the dinner?" His tone, was snappy, he was LOUD, and was basically berating organizer because there is a CHARGE of $150 for sitting in the overflow space... It's by no means a function hall. One of our guests, had to leave dinner unexpectedly, so we were down to 14 people... He stated the room could be used free of charge if there were 15, but since one left the charge would of been $150 just to sit in the overflow room, he did say he would "waive" the fee... after he got it all out of his chest right IN FRONT OF ALL THE GUESTS WE HAD INVITED THERE. I guess he wanted an audience, a simple side conversation could of been had. Never again. I don't care how good your food might be, who wants to have a confrontation when going out to dinner. This place is a jewel in the town. The service is top notch and the food is prepared and served fresh and hot and correct.
