After patronizing another establishment in Star for the past year and a half or so, I decided to give Westside another try. My wife was out with friends and I was looking forward to staying home and eating pizza with a beer and watching TV. Westside is located just off Star, on Hercules, across from the strip mall that has The Hair Lounge and AnyTime Fitness. I believe they are now strictly pick up or delivery. They do have an app, which I used today after creating an account. I ordered the signature Westside pizza, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers. I actually ordered at about 1:45 to be picked up at 4:55. When I arrived, the pizza was ready and hot. I brought it home, got my frosted mug and poured my beer, and grabbed three slices. I threw some hot peppers on it, and dug in. This pizza was excellent. The crust was just the right thickness, not soft but somewhat crunchy, just the way I like it. There was ample cheesed and the toppings were plentiful and came together for a delicious flavor. I think I just found my new favorite pizza joint in town.

Really good New York style pizza! Good crust, good sauce, good cheese -- no complaints here…read more As an East Coaster, I find the pizza options in the Valley pretty lacking overall. Johnny Bronx is one of the best options. This particular location has kind of an unusual setup. I ordered online with DoorDash and went to pick it up. There's a walkup window or a drive thru, and that's it. I'm not sure how the drive-thru works -- if you roll up and order a whole pie, do you have to sit there for 20 minutes while they bake it? If you're picking up something you ordered ahead, what happens if you end up behind someone who's waiting 20 minutes for a pie they're ordering at the window? I have logistic questions. But I parked, walked up, and got my order just fine. Kid at the window had his back turned on his phone and didn't look up at me while I stood there for a couple of minutes. I guess I get it -- probably not a lot of foot traffic on a winter day. But he fully walked away into the back without making eye contact with me, and a girl who was much more on the ball came up and helped me. So not bad. Food's good. But the setup is weird.

So much so, it's time for an updated review. I called ahead but it didn't really matter since seating was swift the night we went. I will say that the biggest downside is the small entry...when people are waiting, they often forget there's other people in the world other than themselves. We were quickly seated and the chips, salsa and bean dip with mushrooms and onions were delivered moments after. The salsa was nice, though needed salt...and the chips were on the older side. Bean dip was warm and tasted great with the mushrooms and onions mixed in. The server was very considerate while my friend and I eyed the large menu discussing all the options our stomachs were interested in. I settled on the burrito de chile verde and my friend had the carne asada taco plate. Food came roughly 15 minutes later, piping hot and with generous portions. I'm well aware this is authentic "Americanized" Mexican food, so I'm reviewing from that perspective. In this context, the food was very well prepared and tasted fresh. The pork in my burrito was tender, heavily sauced and cheesy-melty, wrapped in a fresh tortilla, topped with a lightly flavored chili verde sauce. Beans tasted homemade, though they could use a little more salt or garlic. Rice was a little dry but still edible, especially mixed with the beans, sauce and burrito. Would have loved some more sour cream or guacamole, but overall the meal was very filling and satisfying.

I live less than 10 minutes from the restaurant, yet somehow my pizza arrived looking like it had completed a cross-country road trip. The pizza wasn't hot. It wasn't even warm. It was the culinary equivalent of a handshake from a corpse. The cheese had given up, the crust had the texture of cardboard, and any hope of enjoying dinner disappeared the moment I opened the box. I always tip well because I appreciate people who hustle. Unfortunately, this time my generous tip rewarded spectacularly bad service and a pizza that had all the excitement of yesterday's leftovers. If your idea of "fresh, hot pizza" is serving something that could double as a refrigerator magnet, you might want to rethink your operation. Do yourselves a favor--fix the delivery times, serve food that's actually hot, and stop turning pizza night into a rescue mission. Absolutely embarrassing.
