What has happened to Panera? It used to be a great place with good service and good food. I just walked out of this Panera after waiting in line and watching the register clerks wander off to chat with other employees. Only patrons using kiosks were having their orders taken. Yesterday my wife and I went to a Panera off route 95 in Virginia and had similarly lousy service. Order was not prepared to go as requested, there was no cream for coffee and it took two requests to motivate anyone to get some and the order was incomplete--yet they were not busy. I always enjoy Panera food but my experience with take out this week was poor. I waited some time for my order in a restaurant that was almost empty (4pm). When my name was called there were 2 bags on the counter with no names or tickets attached. When I asked which was mine, the response was rude. I used to be a frequent customer. I was continually frustrated when I would arrive less than an hour after they opened and they were out of the soufflé I wanted...I ended up wasting my time having to go somewhere else for breakfast. I was told that the soufflé I liked was the most popular...wouldn't it make sense to make more of the most popular kind and less of the ones that sit there all day! I have gone in there to find out they are out of bagels and bread bowls many times. Again if it is a popular item, make more!!! The other night was the last straw. I went in at 6:15 to grab some dinner for my family. They were completely out of bread bowls and every other bread too! Isn't bread in their name? This Panera was clean and the staff was friendly. Our order was prepared more quickly than I typically experience at a Panera. We are vacationing in the area and found this to be a nice stop on our journey. The seats all appear to be new, so perhaps they've updated since other reviews commented on the dilapidated condition of the upholstery. read more

Panera use to be one of my go to spots back home in Chicago. How can you beat a broccoli cheddar bread bowl right?? Well on numerous occasions I have been to this location and they was simply told "We are out of bread bowls." On one occasion it was during the middle of dinner. I find that to be unacceptable. I've never been to an establishment run on the principle "when we are out, we are out." I would have been more satisfied if I was given a wait time. I would gladly wait 20 minutes if given the option but they offer no such thing. I've even contacted corporate about the issue but their email lead me to believe they were not that concerned. I would not recommend this location if you have a taste for a bread bowl. This must be a low carb location......That was a joke but no one laughs when they can't have a bread bowl. read more

I've always loved going to Panera to get pastry and lunch. Today changed my opinion of their cleanliness. As I was waiting to order, the pastry was sitting there open on the back side, no protection from anything. There were flies all over the pastry. I spoke to the manager and she basically said "that's the way all Panera's are". I will never order pastry there again. read more

First of all, the food was really lousy. This is the dirtiest Panera I have ever been to! My salad was basically all the stems of the lettuce that no one wants. Maybe they get their greens from a discount vendor that is NOT on Panera's approved list since I've never had such bad lettuce in all the Paneras I've been to. The strawberries in my salad were halfway to bad (and should not have been served - I throw them out if they look like that in my frig). And as if bad food wasn't enough, the place was dirty and needs a makeover. The chairs are old, upholstery is cracked and badly worn out, paint is peeling off the walls and the floors are dirty ( a combination of crumbs and spilled food that was never cleaned off). A great place to stop if you need a bite to eat or would like to check the news (on paper or online) before getting a meal. Conveniently located: It is the only store in the New Town area with a direct entrance from Monticello Ave. Fast service, often having my sandwich (and soup, if I ordered it) ready before I could even fill up my drink. This is my preferred "one step above fast food" restaurant in Williamsburg. read more

Panera is the best of the quasi-fast food restaurants. Excellent food and service, plus the drinks are self-serve and supported by staff. Not a kids place. I LOVE my local Panera BUT the one in Williamsburg was a nightmare this past weekend. Out shopping I stopped and it was under staffed, the cashier was upset she had a job, no seats, coffee 3 hours old, waited 45 minutes for a to go order, the lady helping with passing out orders at the pick up counter PLACED PEOPLES ORDERS ON SOME SIDE TABLE WHERE EVERYONE WAS COUGHING OR ABLE TO PUT THEIR HANDS ON THE PLATES!! The server criticized how much food my fit, runner friend ordered, commenting on how amazing it was that he could eat all of, asked where he put it all, and double checked that he actually wanted to eat all of that. The manager took my order and didn't even know what a dirty chai latte was (a chai latte with a shot of espresso??) and looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked for it. All in all, unacceptable service, rude employees and managers, and an obvious apathy that runs through the entire staff. read more

This is the worst of all the Panera's that I have ever visited, and that includes multiple sites and states. The William and Mary students take the place over for the free Wi-Fi, monopolize seating, are loud, are there when you arrive and there when you leave with papers and books strewn all over the place, and generally make the dining experience regrettable. It feels like a cross between a dorm room and study hall. Unfortunately, only Panera's around so you are stuck if you like Panera's. Portions are always inconsistent, have gotten a whole salad that should have been a half salad, the iced tea is frequently a touch above water. I love Panera, especially the bagels. BUT when I order bagels to take home and ask them to be sliced, OMG!! They are sliced wrong....very thin slice on one side and very thick on the other...never anywhere sliced in half. If I order one to be eaten at the shop, it is sliced correctly. Please do something about this....I just got an order for a dozen and forgot to say "do not slice" and now I can't serve them to my guests because they look terrible. read more

I've attempted to order Panera for a staff lunch meeing twice, and both times I realized it's not worth it. The first time, the team member in catering was incredibly rude. I suppose I was asking too many questions so she sighed heavily, told me she was busy and said she would get the manger because she didn't have time for this. Needless to say, I ordered lunch elsewhere that day. The only reason I ordered Panera the second time was because it was requested by the team. We ordered online so it would be delivered. Some team members were unhappy with the lack of choices - couldn't order grilled cheese or individual soup. The order arrived within the time they quoted; however, a meal was missing and another sandwich was prepared incorrectly. And another box was smashed so the sandwich inside of it was a mess. When I called to have the missing food delivered, the manager seemed apathetic. I didn't even bother to bring up the incorrect food and half-assed packaging. It seemed pointless at the time. Needless to say, Panera is off our list of places to order from. read more

The food is decent, but the customer service is severely lacking. I ordered a turkey avocado blt, and the turkey was frozen. I took it back to the counter to tell the woman who made it and suggested that maybe she could pop it in the microwave for a few seconds instead of wasting it and making a new one. She looked at me like I had two heads and said "it's a cold sandwich, not a hot one" I said I didn't want a hot sandwich, I wanted one that want frozen. She then mumbled under her breath that if I wanted a hot sandwich I should have ordered one. Once finished she shoved my food at me and huffed off. This is the third time we've received frozen food from this location. Once I sat down, another customer who had overheard the exchange told me she too had received frozen food and was mistreated by staff. It's too bad that they don't care more about their food quality or hiring staff that can behave themselves. read more
