I remembered this California Sandwiches across the street. I had never been to this location before. It was time to visit it. There was lots of parking. It's where a bunch of box stores are, including Lowe's Home Improvement and Michael's. This California Sandwiches is a part of a row of three businesses. When you are looking north on Warden Avenue, it's California sandwiches on the left, Freedom Mobile in the middle, and Big Guys that is closest to Warden Avenue. All three businesses are just south of the Merchant's Flea Market. I parked close to the eatery and walked over. There is a ramp if you require a wheelchair or rolling walker to get there. I walked in. There were two folks in front of me in the lineup to place an order. The woman, in particular, was taking her sweet time ordering her sausage sandwich. Luckily, I had had some popcorn during the movie. I wasn't hangry. I was hungry, though. When she was finally done ordering, I got up to the front counter. There is plexiglass that separates you and the staffer. She was nice, but she couldn't hear my order because the woman next to me kept talking to another staffer for some reason. The staffer and I both looked at this woman. When she had finished talking, I repeated myself. The staffer finally heard me. I ordered a veal sandwich with mushrooms. Toppings seemed to have increased since I last ordered this sandwich. It was $2.50 for mushrooms. I love mushrooms that it's a non-negotiable for me. When the woman in front of me was ordering, I was admiring her purple sneakers. Sure enough, we struck up a conversation. She noticed my purple t-shirt that I had on. We got to talking about her sneakers. She got them from Amazon and said that they were comfy, but ran large. She said that they were fine with her arch support and socks on. It was nice chatting with her. She was on the high maintenance side, though. Staff were extremely patient with her. She had ordered a canned drink, but wanted it in a glass. A staffer grabbed one from the shelf. The woman asked that the glass be rinsed out. The lineup behind me became long. It's what happens when you need to wash a glass out, I suppose. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was done. I waited patiently off to the side for my food. I will say that service is slower here than most California Sandwiches that I have been to. I think the woman receiving the food from the kitchen, and then placing it into bags or on trays was spaced out. It was interesting to observe. When she rattled off my order, I acknowledged her, which seemed to snap her out of whatever temporary trance that she was in. She handed me my paper bag with my sandwich. I thanked her and left the eatery. There were tables and seats to dine in. However, I felt like eating in my car. It's private. I can listen to good music. It's good. I'm used to it. This place was generous with the layers of veal that were between the bun, with an equally generous amount of marinara sauce smothered on top of the veal. I unwrapped my sandwich and the right half of it automatically fell to the right. It was that weighty. You do get a bunch of those thin, flimsy napkins. I had to use them all. Another reason to eat it in your car is that it's a messy activity. I had marinara sauce on my face and around my mouth with each bite like a kid. It was a sign of a decent sandwich. Oddly, I never wore my sandwich. I normally do with a large, messy one. If the sauce or mushrooms had to fall out of my sandwich, they did onto the wrapper. Yay to no clothing stains and not doing laundry that night! This sandwich was gigantic and yummy. The veal was tender and perfectly breaded. The marinara sauce was flavourful. It was the perfect amount. I got a lot of mushrooms, which made this mushroom fan happy. The bun was soft and allowed me to grip everything as well as I could. Looking back, I should have stopped after devouring half my sandwich. It was so hot and delicious that I ate the other half. I then suffered from being full and had to take a walk. Otherwise, I would have passed out in my car for an hour or more. I dig this eatery a lot. My sandwich was excellent. Staff were helpful and pleasant. When I moved back to the GTA, there were a few Quiznos stores nearby. One was where my local Scrubway is, roughly five minutes away. The other one was closer to my workplace at the time, at McCowan and Sheppard Avenue East in Scarborough. Both are long gone. Frankly, the only Quiznos that I dropped by recently was on Bay Street, a few blocks away from Scotiabank Arena. I'd go there for a quick bite before a concert. The other evening, I was driving from Canadian Tire to Song Tea along Woodbine Avenue. My head turned when I saw the Quiznos sign to my left. Where have I been and why hadn't I ever noticed this sign? I kept thinking about it. I decided to fetch dinner here last Saturday. After getting my bubble tea, I drove over to this eatery. This Quiznos is in a plaza, a couple of doors down from Mi Ne Sushi, a place that I frequented perhaps eight years ago or so. I found a parking spot halfway down the row of parked cars and backed into it. I walked in and got a woman who said hi. She was busy preparing an order. I saw her fill a container with soup. You can dine in. However, tables and seating are limited. Once she was finished with that order, she focused solely on me. My usual subs are the black angus steak and mesquite chicken. I deviated from both when I saw the beef and swiss melt. I got a foot-long on rosemary parmesan bread. She asked me whether I was good with mushrooms. Yes, said the mushroom freak. Oh, how I have missed being at a Quiznos. I like seeing my sandwich go through the toasting conveyor and come out looking all yummy. I paid with a credit card. This place only accepts credit and debit cards. She wrapped up my sub and handed it over in a bag. I thanked her and left happy with sub in hand. My car smelled so good as I drove home. The only reason I didn't devour my sub was because it was in the backseat and I couldn't reach it while driving. It's a good strategy if you don't have any willpower. I had my sub when I got home. I devoured the whole thing. I normally do an 8" sub, but I was hungry. I'm so glad I went big. The sub looked narrower than I recall. Then again, I have had Jersey Mike's Subs these days that they look gigantic compared to any sub out there. I loved the beef and swiss melt. The beef was tender, juicy, and yummy. The swiss cheese was the perfect amount and was melty delicious. The mushrooms were yummy although this mushroom fanatic would have enjoyed more of them. The bread was excellent toasted. A couple of Saturdays ago, I had the weirdest veal cutlet sandwich that I have ever consumed. This experience made me crave real veal in a yummy sandwich with marinara sauce. My usual go-to veal sandwich place is California Sandwiches. I have the option of hitting Ajax, Vaughan, or Toronto to get my fix. I need at least half an hour to get to any of these locations. I found East Street Sandwiches on Ritual. My eyes zoned into the veal sandwich immediately. I added mushrooms to it, which is my usual way that I like it. I saw arancini on the menu. The last time I had some was last year and it was horrible. The rice was so hard that I peeled it off as if it were the shell of a hard-boiled egg. The filling wasn't anything to write home about. I ordered the meat and peas arancino here, hoping that it wouldn't suck. I had plans to hit Richmond Hill last Wednesday anyway. It was perfect to grab some takeout for dinner before heading home. The eatery is tucked away in a small plaza with Fat Bastard and a few other places. There were guys cleaning the parking lot, so half the spaces were taken. I waited for two cars to leave this parking lot so I could park. One got out quickly. The person in other one looked so confused and was so inexperienced as a driver that I had to wait until this person got her act together. I then backed into a spot and headed inside. The most comforting detail that I saw on the window was that this place has been kicking around since 1978. If a place has been in business for that long, the food must be great. I headed inside. I was greeted by Bruce Springsteen on the wall. It was cool. An older gentleman was behind the counter. He was so nice. I indicated that I had a Ritual order. He handed me a paper bag with my items with both hands. I thanked him. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was pleased to see a human being. I looked so forward to eating my food, wished him a great evening, and headed back to my car. I had one other errand to run. After I was done, I headed home to chow down. I had my veal sandwich first. Delicious! The veal as lightly breaded and had marinara sauce. I tend to like lots of sauce. This place doesn't smother the veal with tons of it. At first, I was concerned. However, the marinara sauce was so bright and flavourful that having less of it actually works perfectly. It was the first time eating a veal sandwich neatly. The bun was perfect. I normally look like a kid eating it without a bib. Not here. Yum! The meat and peas arancino was fantastic. The rice was lightly sticky and so good. I normally don't go crazy over rice, but I loved it so much. It's a decent size. The filling was yummy. The only negative that I can think of was that I did not see any peas. Maybe they were pureed? I couldn't tell. It wasn't horrible, as the flavourful meat filling made up for not seeing any peas. I am no longer afraid to get bad arancini now that I have found this place. Such a gem in Richmond Hill! It's much closer to get my veal sandwich fix here. Huge fan! I'll be back for more sandwiches and arancini. (353)
