    Pathetic Cuban Panini
    Matthew L.

Ordered a Cuban Panini and this is what I got. Unbelievable!!! This place is a joke. Too bad our order was delivered otherwise I would have taken it back and complained. Completely unacceptable!

Quiet open arrival, but as it quickly gained patrons, it was difficult with hearing aids to carry on a conversation. Old building, high ceilings - - LOTS of conversations. It's busy with 30 to 50 year olds. It was an absolute JOY to witness their gatherings, hugs and smiles. Eric - - our server, was very kind, patient and helped explain several of the questions we had regarding the menu. We APPRECIATED his attention to our large water carafe, filling it frequently. THANKS ERIC (with a C!!) Our food was nicely plated, temperature perfect and portions were VERY generous. The Classic Breakfast was my choice. Eggs cooked as directed, breakfast potatoes, one smallish, breakfast sausage in natural casing. A steak knife would have been helpful. I don't know the brand of bacon they serve, but it was FABULOUS! Thick sliced, prepared beautifully and mmmm, mmmm GOOD! The plate includes a Cheddar Biscuit. It is BIG and delicious LOOKING! I had to bring it, half of my potatoes and the sausage "to go". My husband ordered the Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuit. He was not a fan of the less than tasty sausage. #DIL ordered a Chicken Biscuit - - she shared a bite of the chicken. Let's just say, I KNOW what I will be ordering NEXT time we go. Our grandson ordered his favorite Biscuits & Gravy. HUGE portions, suitable for a growing young man. We will be back! P.S. The Gilded Pear cocktail was delicious. The Key Lime Pie was exquisite. Lovely plating and scrumptious. I shared it with my husband PLUS we brought half of it home.

Whistle Stop Coffee Shop is a fantastic coffee shop on Main Street in Lee's Summit…read more I met a friend there this morning for coffee, but I was able to order a French Vanilla pour over. The beans were ground fresh for me. I love French Vanilla coffee, but it's not my wife's favorite. So it was nice to be able to get a cup and enjoy it. I also ordered biscuits and gravy and a glass of milk, which were very tasty. I brought my wife home a cinnamon roll which she enjoyed. She said it was good. The front of the house is pretty bustling and lively. At the back of the restaurant, there's a quieter room and outdoor dining on the patio. I will definitely be returning to this location. Special shout out to the staff, who were magnificent.

It's a pretty downtown location. The decor is cozy and nicely decked out for Christmas. - chairs. They spent a little extra on padded leather to save our butts. - service. They're quick and polite. - cleanliness. Now for the less good: - layout. Everything feels tight. It's prettier than it is practical. - drink quality. My daughter found her spiced chai (pictured) overly sweet. And if you look at the pic, you'll notice that they gave her basically 2/3 of a cup. That pic was taken before she took a single sip (yes, I know the straw I used to show the amount looks used; I did use it to search for a tea bag in my tea fog. See below!). My cinnamon/butterscotch tea fog was, to put it politely, unimpressive. I left it steeping at least 15 minutes because it was way too hot to drink. And then I had to get a straw to search for tea bags, because it tasted like hot foamy water and I was convinced they'd forgotten to put the tea bags in. Well, they hadn't. There was one tea bag. My standard of comparison is Gusto over by Longview, which makes the best tea fogs in town. They use two tea bags and it tastes like heaven. Whatever they served me at Whistle Stop tasted like perfumed water. So overall, I give it a 3/5. Points for location and decor and nice chairs. But the main attraction should be the drinks, and they were both kinda terrible. And there's just no excuse for serving someone 2/3 of a cup when we're paying $6 for a small drink.

Roots Seasonal Cuisine is one of my favorite spots in Lee's Summit, and my latest happy hour visit…read morereminded me exactly why. I stopped in with my girlfriend Lisa, who loves this place so much they basically have a little corner reserved for her. She likes to work from there because the Wi-Fi is good, the vibe is comfortable, and the food is consistently amazing. We sat at the bar, had a couple glasses of wine, and Austin took great care of us. Lisa had the steak special, which was the ribeye, and I had the salmon. Both were really, really great. The salmon was cooked beautifully and the whole meal was exactly why I keep coming back. One small callout: there was a $3 difference between what the salmon was listed for on the menu and what I was charged. I let Austin know so they could catch it for future guests. It did not change my overall experience, but I appreciated being able to mention it. Brandon, one of the co-owners, is amazing. He came out and spoke with us, and that personal touch is part of what makes Roots feel special. You can tell they care about the food, the service, and the people who come in. Their happy hour is amazing, and their seasonal menu changes are superb. I love coming in and trying different things. The salmon tacos are delicious, the birria fries are a must, and I always look forward to seeing what new crostini they are featuring since those change every few months. Roots is consistent without being boring. Great food, great service, great drinks, and a menu that keeps giving you a reason to come back. Can't wait to come back. See y'all next week.

Last fall, I read a very upbeat review of Roots in The Kansas City Star highlighting the two local…read morechefs who came together to open the restaurant about four years ago. The concept immediately caught my attention -- a menu that rotates quarterly, with roughly one-third new dishes, one-third returning favorites, and one-third permanent staples. Since we were in Lee's Summit this evening, the three of us decided it was a good opportunity to try Roots for the first time. Our meal came to $178 before tip, and unfortunately our experience didn't quite match the expectations set by the press coverage and the many five-star reviews on Yelp. We started with two appetizers our server described as menu favorites: the Dirty Martini Mussels and the Chimichurri Potato Skins. Service was friendly, but timing was slower than expected -- it took nearly 25 minutes for the appetizers to arrive, and the dining room was only about a quarter full around 5:30 p.m. The mussels were an interesting interpretation. The broth leaned heavily toward olive flavors and carried a noticeable level of spice, which was quite different from the more delicate white wine and butter profile we typically associate with this dish. The grilled focaccia served alongside, however, was excellent and perfect for soaking up the broth. The chimichurri potato skins were generously topped with roasted chicken and cheddar cheese, though we were surprised to receive four skins for the $17 price point. They appeared baked rather than deep fried, giving them a softer texture than we expected. Entrées delivered mixed results. My daughter ordered the Monday fried chicken special -- a half bird offered at a $10 discount -- and it was a highlight of the evening. She noted the chicken arrived piping hot, with a distinct pickle-brine flavor and a nicely crisp crust. My wife's experience was less successful. Her $39, 8-ounce flat iron steak, ordered medium rare, arrived closer to rare. Since the steak was already sliced, we were surprised this wasn't caught before being served. She also mentioned the risotto carried a chimichurri flavor that felt unexpected alongside the steak. I ordered the 10-ounce grilled pork chop. While the portion size was generous, the dry rub and candied chili relish overpowered the natural flavor of the pork. That said, the sweet potato fries served with the dish were exceptional and one of the standouts of the meal. Roots clearly has an interesting culinary vision and loyal following, and I genuinely wish the restaurant continued success. Based on this visit, however, the experience wasn't quite strong enough for us to plan a return.
