I thought I would treat myself to a cool, refreshing smoothie today at Panera. I wholeheartedly regret this decision! I was asked what size and I told her, a large. Apparently they have one size only, and I am SHOCKED!!!!!! It is about 8 ounces, 12 max! Here is a photo for comparison. The can of diet coke is 12 ounces. I will NEVER step foot in a Panera again. I was going to get a cookie as well, but the cookies were $6 each. ONE cookie $6. The smoothie was $7. I can buy the ingredients and make everyone at work a smoothie for $7! RIP OFF!

I asked for only specific items on my sandwich and they disregarded everything I said. But yet they still hade no problem taking my money.

First day of a new job Lunch!…read more New to this side of town and stopped in here for a little comfort of something I recognized. The Atmosphere - Well it was clean and tidy. Again there is little personality to most locations these days yet the functionality and the ability to clean quickly is at a premium. But, there is little about the restaurant that is comfortable or memorable. So this gets the standard 3 stars. The Staff - I had the good fortune to interact with several of the staff members this time. And ALL of them were extremely nice, kind, and friendly. They went out of their way to check on me several times and remind me that I could get a refill on my drink. They gall at the checkout even offered to bring me the desert that I had on rewards that was set to expire soon. Some of the best Customer Service I have seen in a while. - 5 stars. The Food - Well this is the number one reason to swing in. They have a number of great creations and options to pick more than one. They do let you customize a sandwich should you want. I think this is as good as it gets (unless you head to a "real" deli where YOU decide what is on the sandwich. This visit I had the Pick 2 (which is common) where I had a fantastic Club sandwich and a Chef salad. Pretty healthy over all. (I used extra dressing and ate brookie bites so scratch the healthiness). 4 stars Overall - This was a fantastic visit to an old favorite. The food could have just a little more wow... and by now you all know how I feel about the clean/institutional look and feel of eateries. A perfect lunch space. I'll be back often as they are good, healthyish, and close.

Okay, this was such a fun find. We originally stopped by Merchant Square to antique shop, but…read morehonestly? American Way Smokehouse deserves its own reason to visit. I went with the pulled pork sandwich, and the meat was ridiculously juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. But the real standout? The toppings bar. SO many pickles, sauces, and toppings to mix and match so you can build your perfect BBQ bite (which I fully took advantage of ). They also have drinks, cookies, and other extras if you want to make it a full lunch stop between shopping. I love when a place feels a little unexpected, and BBQ inside a giant antique mall with 400+ vendors definitely fits that. It's easy to see why they've won awards--great food, fun concept, and absolutely worth the stop if you're around Kansas City or Independence.

So what better way to salvage a morning lost to I-70 than a bodacious summertime barbecue? Squeezed between an out-of-business Marsh and your grandfather's favorite antique shop, we find our subject smokehouse. Upon entering you'll find a decorum that's an extension of gramp's haul, for better or worse an amalgamation of patriotism. My ordering science for meat-forward restaurants rests on the laurels of supporting actors. That slab of meat is the proverbial driver, while an accoutrement of bread or tater or soup or what have you is the proverbial putter. Flash and functionality need to be dancing for BBQ to snap, crackle, and pop! Sadly, the American Way gave me no flash and no functionality. My "one meat plate" was leaving me one step short again and again. Pickles, which were abundantly free, became my 'tween bite crutch. Where's that flavor X-factor, that tekky Moroccan winger who can go win you a game? I will end with a big shoutout for the gentleman bussing tables. He was very vested in my enjoyment of the space and cleared tables with an unmatchable work rate. Keep it rocking my guy!
