Pastaphony caught my attention within moments of nesting my customer's order into my insulated carrier- my SUV's cabin was redolent of cheese, tomatoes and overall hone-cooked goodness! I went with Pasta Arrabbiata, then customized my order by adding a breaded chicken breast, black olives, onions, roasted peppers and shaved parmesan. On the plus side, Pastaphony gives ample portions- My entree weighed almost as much as a two-item combo platter from your friendly neighborhood Chinese takeout place! And, while the dish took me to Flavortown...unfortunately it was the Mojave Desert, with its scorching flavor profile and intense, spicy taste. The star of the dish was the breaded chicken cutlet and the shaved parm, but since the penne pasta overwhelmed the chicken/parm by an eight to one ratio...this was a difficult dish to finish. Context- As the acknowledged "lightweight" in a family of folks who typically relish spicy food, I asked my wife to sample my dish. She was born in Michoacacan and regularly quaffs homegrown Serrano and Habanero peppers like they're ice. Even she was surprised by how utterly spicy my pasta dish was! My entree cost $26.39 after taxes, a wee steep for a single protein pasta dish. By comparison, you can spend $1 more at any Johnny Carinos or Olive Garden and get a three-item combo with bread and/or salad accompaniments. So I wasn't satisfied by the "value for money" question, either. It comes out piping hot with their house made butter and marinated sweet peppers that have a sauce that can be drank by the glass if you give me the chance. We moved on to the meatball starters which were unbelievable. Two large meatballs cooked perfectly and accompanied by a sauce that felt like it was designed to have the focaccia dipped in it. We got two different pastas, the lumache and the torchetti and both were cooked wonderfully. I love a good al dente, especially on house made pasta. In the middle of the meal I stopped and began thinking how an amazing place is doing nestled inside an unassuming area and how they landed on this location. I found out the proprietor was there and had to ask her process. When I was eating the pasta I compared it to another very delicious and reputable Italian restaurant in pasadena and it felt wayyy too close for me to figure out how this quality matched so well. To my surprise, she was the owner of that said restaurant as well and it all made sense from there. That really have created an amazing space here from the ambiance to the decor to the food. Everything top to bottom just felt right. I will be returning (sooner rather than later) to check out the remainder of the menu and see what other fun things they offer. This is the most expensive menu item and should be the easiest to make. I assume that it was just forgotten by the kitchen staff, as I know that Rosie had taken the order correctly. They do a good job of timing out the food courses, and everything had fresh ingredients and was very flavorful. Apart from the missing steak, the food was so good. Overall, the food is delicious, but they need to work on their service and communication between the wait staff, bar, and kitchen. The manager did adjust our check for the error they made, and I'm willing to give them one more try as I really enjoy the food and atmosphere.

But Spaghetti Eddie's is still here--41 YEARS later! That alone says something. You don't remain in business for more than four decades without doing something right. They have weathered years of change, economic challenges, and even the incredibly difficult COVID era. During that time, they adapted their operations so they could continue serving the community that has supported them for so many years. Yes, the shopping center may not look like it did years ago, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of this restaurant. In fact, on any given night, you may still have trouble finding a close parking spot because Spaghetti Eddie's is packed! When it comes to something as serious as a food allergy, however, I strongly believe we all have a responsibility to advocate for our own safety as well. If you have a severe allergy, it is always wise to double-check your order before leaving the restaurant. Placing the entire burden on a young employee--who may even be working their very first job--without acknowledging our own responsibility seems unfair.
