I tried a couple of places in Wheaton in the 3 years I lived here, but the very best was Full Key. I only visited one time on Saturday, July 20, 2018 on a date. It just so happened to be the rainiest July day since 1970 in DC and 5th rainiest day ever in July, 6th after 2022 day had more. I lived a very close walk to this center, and I trudged out in the heavy rain with my biggest umbrella & rain slicker to meet up with my date. Service was prompt and cordial. Wow, this was one of the best Chinese I've had! As for the date, it was great. She was from one of the dating websites. We went on a 2nd date the very next day, but she ghosted me. Then, I came across her again online about 9 months later, and we went out on another date in May 2019. I asked her what happened, and she explained whatever excuse with personal stuff going on or whatever. All 3 of the dates were good, but she had her issues. In summary, in spite of my kind of weird date & such a rainy day going here, I'll need to take my girlfriend here to enjoy the outstanding food if we're ever in Wheaton hopefully under sunnier skies.

I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? It could've used a little more seasoning on top but it was good either way. The chicken we ordered was extremely spicy, which I liked, but it was pretty spicy. The pork we ordered was okay. I think part of the reason is that I'm usually craving spicier dishes and stronger Sichuan or Southeast Asian flavor profiles. Recently, though, I've been in the mood for simple, comforting Cantonese food, so we decided to give New Paul Key a try. We stuck with some classics: beef chow fun, salt-and-pepper squid, and chicken and salted fish fried rice. I requested that the chow fun have a strong wok hei--that smoky, slightly charred flavor you get from cooking over very high heat. I always feel a little funny asking for this because it's my favorite part of the dish, but I never know whether the staff understands exactly what I mean or is secretly making fun of me. The waiter actually told me the chef didn't know what I was talking about, so they apparently just cooked the noodles longer. The flavor was good, but unfortunately, the dish was a little too greasy, and it didn't quite have the intense wok hei I was hoping for. The salt-and-pepper squid was very tasty, but we weren't big fans of the coating. It was much thicker and more reminiscent of the batter you might find on a sweet-and-sour dish than the lighter, crispier coating I was expecting from salt-and-pepper squid. The chicken and salted fish fried rice was tasty and probably my favorite of the three dishes. I did notice that the portions were smaller than I expected, especially for the price. I won't mention the shrimp egg rolls Overall, the meal wasn't bad at all, but it also didn't strike me as a must-visit Cantonese restaurant. Maybe I ordered the wrong things, or maybe my expectations were just too high coming from Big Wong. Next up: Full Key. Let's see how that goes.

Dry pork noodles: These were the best IMO. Nice and spicy, with great flavors all around. I suggest getting the pork chop (add on) since there is not a lot of meat that comes with the dish normally. Beef noodle soup: Tasted very authentic and had a great broth. Thin slices of beef reminded me of real Chinese noodle soups. Spicy dry chicken noodles; Very similar to the pork noodles. What I really enjoy is that these are actually spicy dishes! I never had to add chili sauce!! Pork and chive dumplings: These were solid. The sesame dipping sauce is fine, but a mixture of Chinese vinegar (you rarely find this!) and chili sauce are good compliments. Cucumbers: These were more garlic-y then what I had in China, but are still good. Adding a little Chinese vinegar to them really takes them up a notch.

Their scallion pancake was soft, not too oily, and not too salty. I prefer the scallion pancake to have been a bit more thick and flaky, but that's my personal preference. To be fair, still delicious. Their chive and pork dumplings definitely had a delicious chive flavor. Substantial and the wrapper was not too thick. Their spicy sesame paste tofu had a good flavor and substantive. The chili oil wontons were not too spicy and had a good flavor. Again, my personal preference would have been for the dumplings to have been more substantive, but still pretty decent. - Service. Pretty good. It appears most, if not all their staffers, speak Chinese (Mandarin), which was also helpful, because I specifically ordered in Chinese. I asked them about the spice level, because I wanted to ensure it would not be too spicy for my friend. - Price. Pretty good value for menu and portions. - Location. It's pretty easy to find. Also within convenient walking distance to the Silver Spring metro. The inside space is pretty good. Tables can seat a minimum of 2, all the way up to 8. What's Not - Quality. The sesame balls are smaller than I expected. They're the rough approximation of a ping pong ball, maybe smaller. I was disappointed, because I like sesame balls that are substantial. - Service. I specifically asked for soup spoons, because we were eating dumplings. Instead, they gave me regular spoons. Not all the dishes come out in the order you hope. For example, main dishes may come out before the appetizers. This is going to be dependent on your personal preference. - Parking. There is parking near the restaurant, but it's going to be dependent on the day and time. Final Answer Worth coming back.
