Unfortunately this Panadería went from a 5 star, to a common 2 star panadería. On my original review, I mentioned I had found the best panadería in the DFW area. To someone who grew up along the top pastry chefs in Mexico, I thought I had the winner. Somehow, they lost their baker, he quit, or retired. El Sol had the "premium" grade pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread), called "campechana", a flaky crust crispy bread that melts in your mouth. And people in Irving used to line up for their campechanas. I walked in, and to my surprise, the campechana tray was full, I thought, "so lucky of me" to find some in the afternoon. Before, campechanas would sell out like pancakes by 10 am. So I bought plenty of campechanas, 3 conchas, one pumpkin empanada, 2 pan de pan (bread pudding), and one "novia" (crispy concha that resembles a bride's dress). I was extremely disappointed, because I drove 30 miles to El Sol, to find that El Sol went from the best in town to an average, or below average panadería, SADLY I WILL LOOK FORWARD TO FINDING THE BEST, NOT EL SOL. read more

The bread is good, it's not the best but it's delicious enough to come back. Before the renovations, the bread was stored in a wooden display with windowed glass you could open and get the pastries, but after the renovations they changed to this open display, so little kids running around without supervision could place their hands in the pastries, or any bug flying around could land on the pastries. They should definitely have some kind of barrier between the pastries. Another problem is the woman working there, they look like are so done with their jobs and seem in the bad mood. Panaderia El Sol, it's a good thing you are not a neighborhood joint for me, else I'd be in there every day of the week getting sweet treats to stuff my face. Everything is baked fresh and constantly replenished. I love getting the big round tray and picking and choosing what I want to try, and they also include different treats some days. What I got in my latest excursion here - Conchas - Amarilla and Chocolate Barquillo Bavaria - Pastry with a cream filling Empanada Piña Rollo de Mango Rollo de Canela (Cinnamon roll) Tres Leches - pick up a big slab of this if you go, it's really good and it is not soggy at all - perfect ratio of cake to milk/cream The best part about the place is that most of the items are less than a dollar per piece. I love the bread from here. Their pan dulce is sooo good! My favorite is the flor de gragea which is like a hard cookie (in a good way) or something like a polvoron in the resemblance of a flower and has rainbow nonpareils on it! Delish!! And of course, the concha's that never fail. My family and I have tried maybe half of the bread selection they have available, and we all have our favorites, of course. The service is pretty good. I've come across some of the ladies working here and most seem to be kind and happy to help. Rare have I encountered someone who's treated me bad, but I've seen some that seem to have a bad attitude but maybe they've had a bad day. At the moment (since Feb. 28), I know they are currently closed due to renovations, which I know will make the place look even better. But I def will miss this place these next few weeks. I think they'll be open by the first week of May? So, I can't wait for the re-opening. read more

The service could definitely be better, all the women there apparently hate their job and don't even try to fake it. my worst experience to this day has been with Ceci. The bread isn't great, it's barely good. I would rather make a drive to other bakeries where I know my bread will be fresher and the people will at least fake a smile. read more

Update: we've become regulars and the bakers/workers are so sweet and kind. It gets super busy and they work so fast to serve all the customers in a timely manner. They work hard at making sure to bring out fresh product when they are low or out of something. I absolutely love this place. A hidden gem for sure! read more

I stopped here after dinner to bring some snacks and dessert home for the wife. You can't sit and eat here. This place is more of a grab and go kind of place. I grabbed the standard clamshell sweet bread, a few croissants, the m&m cookies, and a few pineapple turnovers. The clamshell bread came in quite a few different flavors and I brought home the chocolate flavored one, a strawberry flavored one, and a vanilla flavored one? The chocolate flavored one was my favorite. The croissants melted in your mouth too. These croissants were decent sized too! They weren't the tiny ones that some stores sell, instead were about as large as your entire hand. They were buttery, fresh and full of flavor. The croissants were my wife's and my favorite item from here. The croissant was probably the healthiest option from here as well. It was not sweet. It had a tiny tinge of sweetness, but mainly was tasted like pillowly goodness. The m&m cookies were a super close second for me! They were great tasting sugar cookies with m&m's on top. They are my favorite type of cookie and I get them every time I come here. The turnovers are good fresh, but don't let them get more than a day old. If you don't eat them right away, I highly recommend heating them up in an oven. If not, at least a microwave. Stale turnover never taste good. And these are super light too, so they will go stale quickly. Overall, pretty much anything you can get here is phenomenal. My favorites are the croissants, m&m cookies, turnovers, and the clamshell sweetbread. This place has items coming hot out of the oven every hour and only sells the freshest food. They have a wide variety of sweet breads to choose from! A large assortment of colors, flavors, sprinkles, coconut, traditional, the list goes on and on. They have always been fresh when I have come. Prices are comparable to other sweet bread stores. They also sell homemade flour tortillas. I have gotten these before and really liked them. We ordered a couple cream pastries. While I was impressed with the variety of options at El Sol, I was underwhelmed by the execution. The puff pastry tasted like a hotdog bun and the other pastry was dry. The cream on these was sweet, unctuous, and delectable. Pareciera que no quieren vender el pan. Me comuniqué con dos dependientas dos veces porque yo quería hacer una orden de 100 piezas de pan. Me dijeron en ambas ocaciones varias razones por las que NO podían tomarme la orden. Dijeron que sería muy temprano para que estuvieran listas a las 6:30 am, aun que la orden la quería hacer con 2 días de anticipación. Luego dijeron que se prefiere que se vendan primero las que ya están en la vitrina. Fue entonces que les dije que volvería mañana por las que estuvieran disponibles. Hoy temprano fui de nuevo y tomé las que estaban en la vitrina y la cajera fue muy grosera. No quiso que tomara toda la charola de la vitrina lo cual sería más fácil en lugar de ocupar 3 charolas para tomar el pan. Luego al ella poner mi pan en la bolsa lo hacía bruscamente aventando el pan. Ni esta dependienta ni doña Meche me sabían cobrar lo que era. Me estaban cobrando más que el doble la cantidad de lo que debería de ser. Si esta panadería no quiere vender, pues entonces que cierren el negocio. No tienen por qué hacer tanta excusa. Nice and cheap tasty treats. This place has a good variety of mexican sweetbreads, cookies and cakes and the prices are super low so you can fill up your tray and still pay less then $10. I'm originally from El Paso Texas a ( border city) and I spent a lot of time driving to different " Mexican" bakeries in DFW trying the sweet bread until I found this little gem!! It is amazing and definitely reminds me of home. The bread remains soft and flavorful for a couple of days. They have a variety of different kinds of sweet breads that include conchas, empanadas, cuernos, rollos de coco, donas, sliced cake, pineapple baskets, and a variety of cookies too! I love knowing that less than a 5 min drive is Panaderia El Sol (Sun Bakery) where they make fresh bread every day. I normally like an early morning bread run, to pick up Conchas, Empanadas, cake, donuts, marranitos, among my favorites. Now, I could try to explain what each pastries looks and tastes like.
