The food at Pan D'olive has been great on several occasions. The main dining area is a little tight, but has nice ambiance. The noise level is fine. The basement wine cellar is a nice place for large parties to hear each other and have a private dining experience. The service has not been very good. At least one server was very neglectful. Another server with our large party tried too hard and was just weird. Our large party had people coming and going and switching seats, and he just couldn't keep up at all. Because of the uncertainty of the service I don't think I want to risk recommending this place to out of town guests or my boss. read more

My husband and I ordered the "tenderloin medallions" and lobster ravioli. I put the tenderloin in quotations because, although they are in plural on the menu, I only received one medallion. Also, I ordered it "medium" but the end result was well done, barely any pink and charred on the outside. For $25, I got one 3-4 oz piece of beef (stringy and overcooked) and about a half a cup of spinach. I am not a large person and this meal left me wanting more. My enjoyed the lobster ravioli. However we both agree that the best thing about this meal was the olive bread and the wine. read more

I ate at Pan D'olive about a month ago and I thought it was wonderful. I had the pork chop with the house salad. I thought their bread and olive oil was superb, and thought their prices were reasonable for such high quality food. I did not drink or have dessert, but I enjoyed the atmosphere, the service and the food. I thought the experience was wonderful. We came here for valentine's day with my best friend and his girlfriend. I will say that the food was delicious and the atmosphere was very enjoyabke, but that's where the good news stops. My friends girlfriend is allergic to gluten. Not like fad gluten free, but very seriously gluten free because of a serious allergy. When we asked the waitress if any dishes had no gluten, she told us that she wasn't sure, but if we were unsure we should eat the pasta because that is gluten free.....Which is obviously ridiculous. She was rude the rest of the service, treating us like idiots even though she didn't even know the menu or apparently what gluten is. When it came time to pay the bill, each couple informed the waitress that we had a groupon, $24 for $40 worth of food. She told us that if we had been at different tables, both groupon would have worked, but since we were together, only one could be used on the total bill. We thought that didn't seem right so she brought a manager out. The manager explained it, but informed us that the waitress was correct. We were frustrated, but it was in the Groupon fine print, so he was admittedly right. The way he spoke to us was incredibly degrading though. The lower level dining room is fairly small and it was packed since it was valentine's day. It wasn't so much what he said, but the volume at which he said it. He did not seem willing to listen or help at all and he was speaking so loudly that people on the other side of the room were looking at us. All four of us are 23-26 and I'm guessing, maybe unfairly, that this is why he felt it was okay to embarrass us like this. I'm sure he wouldn't speak to an older better dressed group in the way he spoke to us. He, like the waitress, treated us as an annoyance and an inconvenience. You could hear it in his voice. Finally, when we got our check, the waitress refused to separate the checks, one for each couple. We told her we would like separate checks twice. After the second mistake, my wife had to break it down for her like you would a chikd, telling her that we were not a 4 way relationship and that we needed the check split in half. All in all, we paid about $60 apiece for a horrible experience. My wife and I spent the whole ride home wondering how we had heard such good things about this place, and I am certain my friend and his girlfriend did the same. I still have my groupon, but I'd rather let them have my money then drive 45inutes into the city to be treated like garbage. Do yourself a favor. Find another Mediterranean /Italian restaurant where you can pay half as much, get twice as much food and be treated like an actual paying customer and not an inconvenience. There's alot of places for that in st. Louis. Don't give this place business that could go to a deserving establishment elsewhere. read more

We went for happy hour, and there was a big group in the restaurant already. The happy hour food and drink was great, but the service was terrible. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to take our order we went up to the bar. When I gave my order the man was visibly upset at how much I wanted (5 flatbreads (for 5 people)). The rest of the experience involved more scoffing and an incorrect bill (which he was not happy about fixing). Overall the food was fine, but the service was some of the worst I can remember in all of my times eating out. read more

This was our second visit to this restaurant and this time we brought friends. A reservation is highly recommended and I'm glad we had one for 6:30 as the place was hopping! We were seated right away and our waiter arrived quickly. The bar offered a great selection of drinks and we had three different beers from the taps--Stella, Duvel, and Zwickel. I had the branzini ( whole seabass) which was perfectly cooked with garlic and butter. The shepherd salad was not quite what I expected but was tasty. My wife had the soup and salad and our friends had a flatbread and the chicken tortellini. The only complaint was the saltiness of the flatbread. Great food and relatively inexpensive for the quality. My husband and I wandered in one evening and were delightfully surprised by the romantic ambiance and classy appeal. We tried several of the appetizers and had a few cocktails. Horrible service last night. Osama Bin Laden was easier to find than our waiter. After being seated and waiting for 10,minutes with no waiter in sight,, I went to the bar to order a round of drinks for the four of us. Five minutes after that... the mystery waiter showed up. He must be "Wanted" somewhere as he never told us his name. We ordered entrees right away, not taking a chance of not seeing him for another 15 minutes. Well sure enough, another period of time passed, we had finished our drinks and no sign of Osama, I mean our nameless waiter. So once again I got up from our table and order another round of drinks for the table. Once they arrived, so did the waiter with salads. Nothing special about the spinach or wedge salads, standard fare you can get at franchise restaurants . Finally the entrées arrived and nothing special to talk about here either. Pork chops were greasy, eggplant with onions and a pasta Steak entree that was bland. No one at our table finished their entrée. After the poor service, I would have thought at least one round of drinks would have been comped or perhaps a dessert, since I did the majority of the waiting on our table, but other than an apology from the bartender for lack of service.. Have been to Pan D'Olive three times and have enjoyed each visit. Every food item has been interesting and well prepared. Emphasis on large meat portions which I think are enough for two or three people. Friendly service and the owner, I believe, is often helping serve and seems generally appreciative for the business. Seems a little pricey however not out of line with other similar restaurants. Never seem to be able to get online reservations to work here so a phone call is probably the best option. read more

We went last night with friends that we hadn't seen in a long time - it's good that we had much to catch up on, as the wait for everything, including drinks, was VERY LONG. The waiter kept apologizing, but the service the entire night was consistently slow - it took a good 20 minutes for our first drinks to show up. The staff was friendly, albeit a little odd. Our waiter kept apologizing for menu items as we ordered them. For example, I ordered the eggplant mezze and he informed me that this was the item people complain about most because they expect it to be piping hot. I ordered it anyway and was quite happy with it. He also warned us, in great and unceasing detail, about just how messy and bony the branzini is, and then described a patron from the night before and her escapades with it. He also apologized for the lobster ravioli when one of our friends ordered it, saying it was one of the heavier items on the menu. So it was, to say the least, a quirky experience. In terms of the food quality, it was fine. It wasn't amazing by any stretch, and at these menu prices I would have expected better. Much of the food we ate I could have made just as well at home (granted, I am something of an accomplished cook, but still). My short answer then is that for the cost of a meal here, there are so many much, much much better places in St. Louis. Not at all bad, except for the speed of service, but not great either. Oh a tip. If you do decide to go, make reservations (we did) and ask for a boothe (we didn't but we got lucky). The noise level is incredibly high there, and if we'd been sitting in the main areas we would not have been able to carry on a conversation. The booths are quiet and comfortable. read more

Calamari was lightly battered, nicely fried; accompanying marinara sauce was ho-hum -- needed more bite. We were surprised by the Turkish offerings on the menu, expecting only Italian fare. Surprised and pleased. The lamb shank was terrific, melting off the bone and beautifully sauced. I would have made use of a marrow spoon if given one -- I went at the bone with the handle of my teaspoon. The braised eggplant with ground beef was surprisingly delicate in flavor (too delicate for my companion, but I liked it). Spinach side dish was very nice. read more

My daughter and I chose to celebrate her birthday at Pan D'Olive, using a Groupon. Everything we ordered was fit for gods and goddesses. We shared the mussels, that are enhanced by a tomato broth that we couldn't resist dipping the accompanying crostini in. I had a spinach salad with cranberries, candied nuts, feta and a perfect raspberry vinaigrette. Ari had the wedge salad with Bleu cheese and finely chopped tomatoes. I had the walnut-encrusted trout with a side of spinach. Ari chose the Special Turkish fish, with a delicious side of savory, garlicky pasta. We added a side of "cabbage stew", which was ambrosial. We each wrapped up enough delectable food to feast again tomorrow. And THEN we shared the chocolate mousse. Service at this splendid dining establishment is as good as the cuisine. Great food. Great service. Beautiful restaurant. The complimentary bread, both white and olive, that was offered was great! The calamari was light and beautifully cooked. The arincini were very flavorful. My husband's steak with gorgonzola cream sauce was cooked to perfect medium rare. Our server was helpful and took very good care of us. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary. They gave us a serving of the tiramisu. Delish! Will definitely return. The owner helped my husband sneak in flowers to surprise me. We were hesitant after reading some reviews. It was WONDERFUL from the service to the AMAZING food. The Bread was to die for and they kept refilling our basket. I requested a dish different than what was on the menu and they created it especially for me. It was unbelievably good. The service Superb and the Manager John came bu and checked our table twice to see if all was OK. We sat in the wine cellar and it was much more quiet than the 2 upper rooms. The space is very nice and I enjoy the semi private booths. Short but good draft list, I especially enjoy the Murphy's Irish Stout. The wine list left a lot to be desired, short but adequate size glass list but the choices were mostly big name brands. We tried a white and a red, the red seemed to have been opened a bit too long, or just not good. Lamb sliders - good and much better with the sauce, my only complaint is that the bun was a bit too big for the filling and therefore a little difficult to eat. Carpaccio - fairly good for American carpaccio and loaded with capers and parmesan so it felt a bit more substantial. Lobster ravioli was a little fishy and the edges of the ravioli were a little thick and therefore undercooked. Overall flavor was quite nice though. Veal, unfortunately I can't remember if we got the cutlet or the marsala - it was a thin cutlet with what seemed to be a red pepper mushroom sauce. This was the least favorite of the night, the sauce tasted a bit like sweet and sour sauce. I will definitely return to try more dishes or just to have a nice Murphy's draft. read more

Best dinner we have had in a long, long time. Very attentive wait staff, lovely ambiance, and it was an overall outstanding birthday dinner for my husband! We started with the fried calamari. They were crisp with delicious breading and wonderful sauce....they were not rubbery at all!!! My husband ordered the Caesar salad, which he enjoyed, and I ordered the spinach salad with dried cranberries, candied walnuts, and gorgonzola cheese.....wonderful! My husband enjoyed his New York strip steak, which was cooked to his specifications and the perfect temperature ( it was served with some yummy mashed potatoes). I ordered Veal Picatta, which came with some flavorful sauteed zucchini, and I have to say the sauce was so good I could have eaten it with a spoon!!! The veal was so tender that I could cut it with my fork....just perfect! Even the bread they served was tasty ( I think it had olives in it, like the restaurant's name). Al in all, we could not have had a better dining experience. I bought a Groupon so we could try this place, and we will go back soon! read more
