Sure, you can get saimin at a number of eateries throughout Oahu from local chains (including Zippy's, of course) to vintage spots like this one. Operating since 1946, Palace has a unique local vibe that felt spartan yet casually friendly. Jamie W and I took the local bus, the 42, and then walked through a heavily industrial area to get here. We expected a wait on a Saturday morning, but no, there was a table free just for us. It honestly looked like an employee lunch room, but we really didn't come for ambiance. The backlit menu on the wall was similarly sparse as it focused on the essentials - saimin, won ton, udon, and meat sticks with various combinations offered. And that was it (Photo 3). Pretty easy. We both ordered large bowls of the $10.25 Won Ton Min since we got five won tons to go with the saimin noodles, pork chashu, and chopped green onion (Photo 9). It was genuinely top of the class with the curly noodles swimming in the savory broth which was made with boiled pork and beef bones. The richness made a huge difference over the standard dashi broth. Because I knew how popular they were from YouTube vloggers, we both ordered the $4 BBQ Sticks, chunks of tasty teriyaki beef on bamboo skewers (Photo 8). It was totally worth the long bus ride. I was motivated to buy the 80th anniversary T-shirt (Photo 6). FOOD - 5 stars...as good as saimin gets thanks to the rich broth and al dente noodles AMBIANCE - 4 stars...it's really a lunch room but a serviceable one SERVICE - 5 stars...the female owner was really friendly TOTAL - 5 stars...definitely coming back on our next Honolulu adventure RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Update 3-4-26. After picking up papers in town coming back towards home my husband said let's see if get parking at Palace Saimin and if get we go eat. Well had 1 stall we was lucky So went in and we ordered small won tun mein and BBQ stick. This time the won ton was good wasnt gummy and broth came out hot. The BBQ stick was lightly marinated and even though the meat was alittle sliced on the thick side it was ok. All in all it was better than the last time we went they improved alot more on the won tun wrappers.

Best saimin BECAUSE of the beef sticks. Small quaint venue literal hole in the wall but we've been coming here since I was small. The beef sticks are the best accompaniment to the saimin and you have to get extra sauce and mix it with your hot mustard. Bring cash and don't forget to tip your small local businesses.

This was my first meal in Hawaii and I thought the restaurant was very cute and cozy. The staff were also very welcoming. They specialize in saimin, so there are only a few options on the menu (which I think is great because it makes choosing something a lot easier). I got the saimin with wontons and it was such a comforting and filling meal. The mustard that is served with the noodles is quite strong so I didn't eat it, but the BBQ skewers were done very nicely! I think this isn't something I would get often, but I definitely enjoyed my first experience.

My mom said, it was the best saimin she's ever had in her entire life! Service was amazing, they were so nice and food came out fast and piping hot. Broth was flavorful and simple. Noodles were chewy and fresh and, I loved the flavor of the beef was soft and juicy. Cute place so homey. Mahalo for the 'ono food!

An OG classic off king st, this place keeps it hella simple and serves just a few things: saimin, udon, wontons, and meat sticks. Tbh brah if I come here, Im coming here for some saimin so I can't speak on the other things but yeah. Saimin here is gas. Not much seating + the parking kinda lame so just be aware depending on when you stopping by.

This was the best meal I had in Honolulu during my trip. It's a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant with a straightforward menu. We had a lot of luggage with us, and they were so welcoming and accommodating and let us keep the luggage in the restaurant while we dined in. We tried the bbq sticks, and I got the wonton min (saimin with wontons) and my boyfriend got the saimin. The bbq sticks were so good and flavorful, and I loved how simple and deciduous the saimin and wontons were. The prices were also incredible, especially for Honolulu. I'd definitely come here on a regular occasion if I lived closer and would highly recommend for a good bowl of delicious saimin.

Gotta support these OG places! Saimin is firm, broth is shrimps/ aroma is in the air. Prices still reasonable and service is fast and friendly. Take credit card and debit card, no % charge..There's about 5-6 parking stalls, otherwise find street or a post office parking lot at night/ Sundays. Even large bowl saimin is hefty. Good side beef chunks for the BBQ stick. i'm gonna try the combo next time (mix of saimin/ udon/ won ton)?

Palace Saimin is a place for local comfort food in an unassuming place in Kalihi. Many old timers in the area are fond of their famous saimin and BBQ sticks from their younger days and have yearnings to re-visit from time to time.....like my older family members. It's a small, casual, no frills type of food joint. Service was friendly and attentive. Parking is limited in the shared lot and can be challenging especially during peak hours.

First time visiting here. Won't be my last. First of all the prices can't be beat, secondly the saimin is simply delicious. The service is friendly and feels like eating at my families house. Much aloha! No glitz and glamour just a hole in the wall joint that I would take over a fancy pricey restaurant any day. 80 years in business, you know they're doing something right.

This was my first stop for food. It's definitely a comfort food. I'd gladly come back!! Not only for the food, but for the wonderful customer service. I felt welcomed and cared for and I truly appreciate that. I see why they've been open for almost 80 years!!! I'm excited to come back for that bbq stick. So delicious! The menu isn't terribly extensive, but it's perfect. The whole process is quick and easy.

This place is the spot for saimin, hands down, no contest. Every time I'm on the mainland hunting for good ramen, this is what I'm craving but can never find. Too bad they don't have a location up there they'd absolutely kill it in the winter. This is one of the last true old school saimin spots standing and has been a cornerstone of the Kalihi food scene for generations. There aren't many places I actually remember eating at as a little kid, but this is one of them. And honestly it hasn't changed in decades, and that's a good thing. Still the same layout, same menu on the wall, still only about eight tables and five parking spots, and the aunties working here? Still rocking those warm smiles while making sure tables turn over fast. The saimin? Still legendary. The noodles have that perfect chewiness, the broth and diced char siu are magic, and the beef sticks? They got better over time and thicker....just tender, flavorful beef with zero fat nonsense. But this is one of those places where the saimin is best eaten fresh at the table. Something about the steam, freshness of the noodles, and the broth just hits different when you're sitting there. Pro tip - go past lunch (2-3 pm) or early because parking is a battle (with only five spots) and seating is super limited. But it's worth the effort. My husband declared his won ton min the best ever, and honestly, I can't argue with him. And let's talk price, $8 for a large saimin? In this economy with this inflation? Seems like a steal. I'm just grateful this place has survived until now, serving up the same Saimin I grew up on.

Palace Saimin...old school local family restaurant didn't disappoint. Ordered the combination, which was the udon/saimin/and won ton min. Noodles were perfect and chewy, and dashi was oishi and came out piping hot. Saidon (saimin/udon) was equally oishi. BBQ sticks were good. Wish they were a little more marinated with a stronger teriyaki taste, but enjoyed it. Server...I think owners daughter, was so friendly and nice. Highly recommend, and definitely love supporting local. *Small parking lot, but perfect timing, and found a space.

Palace Saimin Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Palace Saimin

What menu options are gluten/dairy free?

None at this time

Is there MSG used in the food?

Not sure if it was MSG, but there is definitely a sweet taste with their barbecue sticks. As per the noodles, I didn't notice a strong flavor profile and they even recommend adding spicy mustard to bump up the flavor.

Do they offer dine in now?

Yes!!

Does the broth contain shrimp or fish?

Yes

Is there street parking?

Very little street parking. At night some customers park across the street at the post office. We have a small private lot with 7 spaces.

Any options for someone who is vegan/ vegetarian or pescatarian?

You can order the Saimin or Udon without the won ton and tell them to leave out the char siu too.

Lots of parking but there's also a lot of good food places to eat here. We got there about 1 and it was half full. I got the lunch box which comes with 2 choices and a piece of shrimp tempura, tossed salad and rice. I opted for their butterfish which is really good and ahi katsu. There are several choices to choose from. I should have taken a picture of the menu. Oh well. Next time. The lunch box also includes edamame, cabbage and pickled cabbage. Miso soup which is really good. You might say the portion size isn't huge but for me, it was good. For the price and the quality of food it's well worth it. I normally forget to ask what our server's name was but she was so nice that I did this time around. Her name is Cris. She's very nice and always smiling. She kept our water glasses filled as well as our hot Japanese tea. Really nice person. As for the ambiance it's like any other restaurant where everyone is talking story and us just having a good time. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Salmon, ahi belly, katsu, and more. * Sushi Bar. With miso soup. Menu offerings are deluxe & standard assorted sushi, maguro don, Chirashi sushi. * Noodles. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! What can I say about da grub? Simply O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G!!! My BBQ Chicken came out on a hot sizzling platter, & underneath the BBQ Chicken there was grilled onions. Yum! The chicken skin was crispy, and the sauce was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Nicely executed! I could only eat half of it. The portions sizes for all the dishes were good. I actually had to take home some of the teri beef too. Kind of bummed that I hadn't been to this place 20 years ago. There is no dedicated parking garage so it's either street parking or any of the open lots nearby. First of all, let's talk about the decor. The entrance and lobby area has concrete walls covered in vintage Japanese movie posters, Japanese decor and artifacts lining the shelves, and illuminated LED blue and hot pink lights hanging from the ceiling. The abstract art and interior decor feels like an underground anime bar and gives off relaxing and chill vibes. You can definitely tell that the owner put a LOT of thought into creating the ambiance he wanted to portray. Walking further into the restaurant is the bar seating area. The menu is izakaya-style, focusing on small flavorful plates. Each dish was explained to us in depth on where the fish came from (flown in), how it was prepared, and what made it so special. Every dish was tasty and filling, though my favorite dish was the toro! It was soft, buttery, and melted in my mouth. This place is pricey ($150 per person) but definitely worth it for the food and the experience. The service is excellent - the owner and the other employees were attentive, personable, and treated us like valued guests.

Sushi counter has 8 seats and there are some additional tables. Hiro is planning to do some pretty cool things with the space-- so fun! FOOD: Amazing. The first course included saba, which Hiro prepared exceptionally well. The other components of the first dish were tasty too. For the nigiri, our favorites were the chutoro and otoro (unsurprisingly). There was also salmon nigiri with pesto which was unique, but not our favorite. We noticed that Hiro adds additional flavoring components to good quality fish/seafood.. the flavors all complemented each other well, without overpowering the fish. SERVICE: Good. Hiro was chef, waiter, dishwasher, everything (he said he does this on certain nights when it's slower). He juggled all the duties well. The courses were presented at a nice pace and our waters were filled regularly. OVERALL: Wonderful experience. We appreciated Hiro's personalization and flair. It was also fun talking story with him! Plus, BYOB! He said he plans to keep the omakase area BYOB too. We definitely plan to return.

When we arrived it wasn't busy but the dynamics quickly changed as the lunch crowd arrived. Our choices for lunch made the experience positive. Service is quick, food is fresh and ambiance is comfortable. I've been here a number of times and enjoyed it every time. My friend said she's coming back. Thank you Utage for the great service, fresh food and ambiance of comfort wanting to return again.

Glad we had a reservation (even though we went for an early lunch). The place hasn't changed, the decor is the same What was nice was that there were a lot of wait help so service, even when it was busy, was attentive. Food was plentiful. Previously I had ordered the teishoku tempura but next time I'll order the tempura and side of rice. My sister did this and she had such a large serving of various tempura. I think there was four shrimp tempura (the teishoku didn't have as much. Most of the time I've been here the parking was available. But because there are so many other restaurants and stores the parking lot was usually pretty full but perhaps because we were lucky or early there were many spaces. I keep telling myself I need to order bitter melon. But I never do. Maybe next time
