I should have read the reviews before leaving my bike here. Not necessarily what the unhappy customers wrote, but how Scott responds to their criticism. WTF! Quick note- don't trust this place if you plan on putting your child or loved ones on the bike or if you dont want your bike stripped of valuable components and replaced with cheap random parts that don't work together. I will get in to that later in the post.... I brought in a Yuba Mundo e-bike equipped with a top-of-the-line Grin motor and components. Granted I brought it to Scott because the hub motor was seized. He kept the bike for about 8 months, ghosted us by not responding to repeated messages for months at a time. This is back when we were being patient and trusting. Eventually, we came by to just get the bike working or not, when he said he will get right to it. We were very clear about what we wanted and how we intended to use the bike- for carrying our 18 month old baby and taking the bike into the hills. I mentioned the baby multiple times to stress the safety of the bike. I also mentioned that I don't care what it cost. He said he understood. About a month later we get the bike, stripped of all Grin components and replaced with a cheap motor, no pedal assist- just throttle, left our original 9 speed shifter but with a new 7 speed cassette. Meaning, it is very easy to shift the chain right off onto the hub, we also lost our granny gear and the cheap new rear brake was not adjusted and would not stop the bike, I learned all this immediately on my first ride in the streets and having the chain shift of the cassette and the derailer hittin the spokes and then the brakes not stopping the bike. He took the bike back in to fix the issues and did add the PAS (pedal assist). But he didn't do anything else and said I need to replace my other components ents because the motor he put on would not work with them. At this point I asked for all my original Grin parts back so that I could take the bike to another shop, and he says he will look for them. After bugging him for 3 weeks, he finally says they were recycled, which I assume means they are on another bike because he's not going to throw these parts away. He also didn't provide any options for repair or replacement. He also said he is a Grin dealer and when I asked why he didn't just replace the GMAC hub motor and leave the rest of the system in place and he had no answer except to start getting nasty and when he does get nasty he is the type who can't stop and needs to escalate and have the last word even if its throwing F bombs and insults around. We are out $500 and are now going to undo everything that he "fixed" Scott, dude- it takes a lot for me to get pissed enough to leave a bad review. I hope you figure it out and start to take your work, your integrity, and other peoples safety seriously. read more

Easily the worst experience I have ever had in a bike shop (perhaps any shop). The owner is rude, incompetent, and dishonest. I brought my e-bike in for repair in August and was told that getting a part would take awhile but it would be ready early October. I agreed. In October I tried calling and texting to check on progress. It took numerous attempts before I got a response. The part had come in, I was told, he was busy and would get to it in a week. A week later I got the silent treatment again. I went by the shop and was rudely given the same excuse and promised it would be ready in another week. Once a week I checked in by text and got such responses as "If you have nothing real to say don't waste my time." This went on for two months, until mid December. Finally I was told I could come pick it up. The casing of the battery compartment was ripped apart, exposing dangling electronics. He had the gall to claim that I had delivered the bike to him in that condition. I had to walk the bike home, find replacement screws to put the battery casing back together, and charge the drained battery. Unsurprisingly, the bike is no longer functional, giving an "ERROR 30" message (it had brake and connection issues when I brought it in, but functioned intermittently.) This place is the worst. I cannot understand how he stays in business. read more

Took my kids e bike in to get the brakes and calipers adjusted after his friends Dad "fixed them" they didn't work at all. Scott replaced a brake cable and adjusted everything and now it is like brand new. He's super cool and the turn around was really quick. He mentioned swapping out to hydraulic brake lines and the price was really fair and affordable. He's a great guy and we're lucky to have him in the area. read more

I, accidentally bought the wrong battery for my electric bike and of course it could not be returned. Called Scott to see if he wanted it, because I had no use for it and I rather it not just sit in my house. He said that he could make it work for my bike and he did. Now I have a backup battery that can be used while the actual battery is its own place. Double my range. Most excellent. read more

I am not sure why you got back to me on this so late. This was last year. The pictures I took were not edited. They were pics of the bike as I received it. At every turn, we asked if the bike would be good after you"fixed" it. No solder on wires, barely held together with black electricians tape. The wrong bolts on the wrong nuts and so on. I put my trust in your word. You said you would do all the work. It was your work that left my son in the middle of traffic suddenly with no power. If anyone is an asshat or, a dummy, it is you. I absolutely love this shop!! Scott is one of nicest cats I've ever ran across. He's extremely knowledgeable about Ebikes and has a great selection of bikes to choose from. He's the only person I trust to care for my bikes. What I like most about his shop is that it's real. It's not some shop where it's overly decorated and well put together. So if that's what you're into, this might not be the place for you. Scott is a one man operation so having patience is a must. He's honest, keeps it 100 and works his ass off. For those reasons alone is why I keep coming back. read more

I brought my Lectric XPress 750 step-through in for an initial safety check and fine tuning. (Lectric recommends such an initial safety check since all their sales are direct to customers.) Scott did a terrific job in checking (and fixing) various adjustments to the derailleur, the handlebar settings, adjusted the shifting levers to make them more ergonomic and tightened various things that needed tightened and explaining all that he had done. I was very glad I brought it to them, and the service was very competent, friendly and Scott could not have been more helpful. I will definitely bring it back them for maintenance in the future. read more

Update of my review in 2017. We have had regular maintenance, problem maintenance and little stuff taken care of over the years. Scott is always there for us and has insured that are ebikes run like they should. My wife is approaching 7K miles and they continue to be solid investments. We are in our mid 70's and ride them in the Oakland hills as often as we can. We like Scott's attention to details and ability to craft solutions that work for us each time. He is the best. You cannot say that for many sellers out there and we count on his expertise as we strive to make it to the 10K level on both bikes. read more

I was a little scared of going to shop based on other reviews online and in person (see my review of LuLu). But I had no choice so off I went reminded that I have my own brain and consciousness and can find out for myself. I walked in with my cheap ebike and got free brake repair, advice and a nice chat. This is the guy to go to if you're planning to take an ebike to Burning Man and want it to work when you get home. Went by to check out the bikes here. When we got back we had questions and the owner acted like we were crazy to be asking questions. I wrote him a private email that said "We are serious ebike shoppers came by today to try out your bikes. You were condescending and seemed irked by our legitimate questions. I guess you have so much business that treating customer questions as an annoyance works for you. Good luck We will be buying elsewhere." This was his response: "I am happy you will not buy from here our customers all need to be fun-loving and light-hearted not stuck up asshats. If my joking around got to you in a negative way then it did its job. That is my filter for not dealing with a certain kind of person. Hope you find the bikes you are looking for, and I hope the seats are tight because there is no room for the seat post to go up your ass next to the stick that is already there. GFK" I guess at this business wanting to have questions answered courteously about the mechanism/ design/features of the $$ item you are about to buy makes you a "stuck up asshat". Like most people I did all my bike research before I went to Pacific e-Bike. They happened to be a Hovsco dealer and that's the bike I wanted. Scott, the owner, was great to work with, answered the few remaining questions but I could tell he was a no BS guy so I gave the same attitude right back to him. We had fun. I scheduled an appointment at 4:30 pm days ahead of time. Person closed at 3pm (website hours show open until 5pm each day). Got an email at 3:48 (while I was on my way to the appt) that my 4:30 appointment was canceled and to "come back before 3pm". I'm not sure what the point is of having hours or taking appointments via a website if you just cancel them with super short notice. I got multiple notifications for the appointment this week, so there were plenty of opportunities to be polite/professional and let me know ahead of time. I Emailed them about the issue and this was the response "I closed at 3 but forgot to send you the message till I was already gone. and ok we have no issues with you not having us fix your bike good luck with it " and this was in the signature Hours: Everyday 10am-5pm Conclusion: I would just find someplace that cares a bit more about customers. read more

You can't judge a book by its cover!  (At least I can't.)  Pacific E-Bike is located in the heart of Berkeley's industrial neighborhood, surrounded on all sides by heavy-duty factories.  Instead of a slick storefront displaying bicycles and accessories, you'll find a corrugated roll-up door, half open, and frosted glass windows that offer no view inside.  Above the door is a sign, printed on heavy fabric that simply says "Pacific E-Bike, Home of Emazing Bikes."  This is not your typical bicycle shop, and the outward appearance might be a turn-off for some people!  Once inside the door, you will find an odd collection of bikes--some old, some new, some custom--but all with motors.  Then you will be greeted by Scott, the owner and one-man band.  He is the salesman (soft-sell only here), mechanic/repairman, and all-around advisor on e-bikes.  (He was one of the first to get into the e-bike business.)   My wife and I were in the market for e-bikes.  We had been to two other Berkeley bike shops and had test ridden two imported European e-bikes, both in the $4K-$5K price range.  A friend of ours owns one of Scott's e-bikes, and that's what brought us to him.  I had made an appointment on Scott's website for our visit, and when we arrived, he gave us his undivided attention.  He let us ride a couple of Emazing E-Bikes around his neighborhood to get a feel for them.  He carefully explained the difference and pros and cons of a hub motor versus a mid-frame motor.  I am not one to rush into buying decisions, so I told Scott I wanted to think about it and come back.  He suggested we come back another day and take two bikes for up to a full day with absolutely no obligation to buy.  He actually encouraged us to check out the competition and test ride other e-bikes. We did return, and we did take two bikes for a couple of hours.  Then we bought them.  We decided on the Emazing Apollo+ bikes because we live in the Berkeley hills and wanted the additional power of the mid-frame motor over the hub motor.  When comparing the specifications of the Apollo+ to many of the other "name brand" e-bikes, we were delighted to see how well those specifications either matched or exceeded e-bikes costing 50-100% more. After riding in the steep hills for a couple of weeks, the brakes on our bikes needed a small adjustment.  I like doing things myself, but didn't want to attempt that on a new bike.  I took the bikes to Scott, and he not only did the adjustment right on the spot, but he taught me how to do it and told me what tool to buy and use. We love our bikes!  They have all of the bells and whistles of the more expensive e-bikes, as well as a feature not found on all e-bikes--a throttle.  The throttle, a small lever operated with the thumb of the left hand, applies power without pedaling, and that makes it very easy to start riding when facing uphill.  Of course there is an LED panel showing all pertinent information, as well as a large battery for maximum distance.  The derailleur and brakes are top-quality. I have an A2B Ferber electric bike that I bought used. When the old battery began to give out, I was told by my local bike repair shop that it would be non-repairable due to the fact that the company was no longer in existence, and the parts needed would be hard to find or just not available. Luckily, I was pointed in the right direction...Scott was there to take my bike in and commence to work his magic on it! His mission is to enable the community to access alternative green energy transportation solutions. We purchased two "Mountains 2 Sea" motorized Ebikes from the East coast recently. They worked fine on the beach until we gave them a deep clean. We accidentally moved the cadence disk too far from the cadence sensor. With Scott's guidance we were able to fix the issue without having to travel from Santa Cruz to Berkeley. We were not able to receive this type of technical assistance from the original bike dealer! Owner actually knows how to work on these bikes. Many bike shops sell E-bikes but don't know how to do the electrical stuff.

Forget looking around. If your ebike needs repair this is where you should take it. Scott is knowlegable and HONEST.

As a college student at Berkeley, I had to buy an electric scooter to get around. Unfortunately the tire popped, but thanks to Pacific E-Bike, my scooter was back and running. The service was quick and efficient. Nothing more I can ask for. Also, the tire replacement didn't have an inner tube so that was a plus. Just a great place that gets the job done. read more

I saw a sign for some bikes on sale so I thought that it was a "sign". I've been wanting a bike for quite some time now and went to check the bikes out. There were two bikes that caught my eye --one was a road bike ($130 out the door) and one mountain bike ($161 out the door). The bikes were all new and very reasonably priced for the reason that they were made from mediocre parts (the seat, plastic peddles, wheels, etc). The sales dude totally kept it real with me and told me the "what's what". I didn't mind the mediocre parts because I could easily get them changed. I ended up purchasing a mountain bike that fit my body frame perfectly (peep the photo!). The frame, gears, handle bars, and build of the bike was totally in line with what I needed and that was good enough for me. I'd suggest going to the real store location itself for a good deal --the bike that I got for $161 is actually listed as $250-$300 on their website. I guess I got pretty lucky that day now that I know how much it was really worth. In addition, the sign says that new bikes were on sale for $89.00 but that's only for the bikes that you have to build yourself. It's an additional $30.00 for someone to build it for you. In most cases, you can take home the bike that is already built and in the store itself which is what I did. Thank goodness I have a spacey PT Cruiser! read more

Scott was extremely helpful in taking over a project that had languished at Bikes on Solano for 5 months. I gave him my half finished electric Taga 2 conversion project & he redid most of the work from Bikes on Solano, got everything installed correctly, & had the bike running within a week despite it being close to Burning Man hub extremely busy for his shop. He charged me $125 instead of the $1800 Bikes on Solano wanted. When the bolts needed for the front axle were out of stock everywhere due to Burning Man, Scott put my bolts in the forge & straightened them good as new. Very professional & knowledgeable, I truly wish I had brought my Taga here in the first place. The shop is full of a variety of e-bikes, many unusual ones as well as standard bikes. I was so thrilled with Josh's conversion of my Schwinn that I gave him 5 stars and took the bike out for a ride the very next day. Everything went fine on the bike path until I got to the red light on University Avenue - oh, oh! So, long story short, so to speak, a short in the wiring meant I could not stop the motor without turning it off. Very dangerous for me at red lights, twice. Rode the bike to Josh, who was pretty snarky, but did fix it. A couple days later went for another ride, 9.4 miles on flat with pedaling, motor quit even though the power light says green, as in full power. I was stuck with HEAVY Schwinn FAR from home. I was told that this battery is rated for 20+ miles, depending on pedaling, as I did almost the whole way. Hope Josh can fix this. I am sending a MAN to discuss. read more
