Excellent service! I came here for a consultation and was given really great advice for what to look for as well as a solid deal (confirmed with double checking other websites and stores after their quote). Michael helped me out from the beginning to end -- I followed the instructions as well as a video tutorial for the setup but got stuck (literally) on one of the steps. I came by the store half an hour before closing, came across Michael again, and he helped me out no problem and really graciously. Additionally, when I stopped by to pick-up my order, I almost forgot a part of my order as I was loading up my car, and one of the associates brought it out for me. When I called, I spoke to David and told him what I needed and my price range. David asked for my vehicle year, model and make. How many of you enjoy having a crappy shopping experience?!?! Not everyone at once raise their hands! But if you are interested in a zero star experience make your way to rack attack in Berkeley and watch out because you might be attacked by the workers themselves. Imagine walking into a store, humbly and excitedly purchasing a product that cost over $800 just to then be accused of taking something without paying...aka stealing! Hello dud of society, you just watched me walk out with the damn item I PAID and nothing else! But your brain connections failed or perhaps were never existent and you had the audacity to run after me to ask if I had taken something without paying. So after the wonderfully trashy experience, this place deserves a zero star for making a false accusation! The worker was so worried about judging that he didn't realize his behavior could result in losing not just one customer but everyone else I know that I will tell about this and will advice they should stay clear of your store. You would think as a small local shop they would be grateful and not make assumptions that are clearly not true and double check before taking any action. To be honest, it makes for an awful experience. Thank you to the dude's coworker who had some sense and called the ridiculous worker out for his inappropriate behavior and confirmed that I had paid and that whatever the hell I was being accused of taking was all accounted for and still remained in the damn store. They admitted they were wrong and had nothing else to say. Honestly, I can't imagine this was the owner because there was just no class or professionalism to his actions. The audacity and frank stupidity was astounding. I am a business owner myself and would never treat my customers in that way. So, I would not recommend coming here. Find a different place to shop. Suddenly one day my Thule cargo rack decided to stop locking properly. The key couldn't turn the locking knobs to their correct position even though nothing was blocking the way. My dad spent an hour trying to get it to work and nothing was budging. I spent another hour at REI where two people examined it to the best of their abilities to get the locking mechanism to work but said they didn't have the tools or parts to fix it. They recommended I come here and I am so glad I did! I arrived just a couple minutes before Rack Solid was closely worried I wouldn't get help but the guy Patrick graciously came out to take a look and fixed the problem in about two seconds!!! Magic! Definitely coming here for my future rack issues. He twisted the whole locking knob vs. just using the key and it brought everything back in place. A+!!!! 5 stars!! read more

On 9/21/22 I drove from SF to the Berkeley Rack Solid to pick up a set of Yakima towers and landing pads approx $400-500. I initially chose to spend my money with this company instead of just ordering online or going to REI because they are a small local business. I understand that Yakima and Thule products rarely go on sale and the price is just the price. I asked to buy six Yakima locks at the Berkeley store and I didn't realize until I got home that I was sold clearly used and dirty locks with a Home Depot copied key that wouldn't go into the lock smoothly.. I checked my receipt and I was charged full MSRP for clearly used equipment. I called and was told "they work the same", not the point if I'm paying full MSRP I want brand new product. Luckily I was able to return the lock at the SF store without too much attitude or drama. After getting my refund I went to REI and bought brand new locks in the package for the exact same price. I don't recommend this place and I will not be returning for any reason. read more

Rack Solid helped me revive a roof rack that a neighbour had left behind and figure out how to safely mount it to our Honda Civic! The rack is an older design which is no longer sold today but they had a parts bin full of spare parts that fit the bill. I'm thankful to them for saving this rack system from landfill, and saving us a bunch of money! read more

The hinges on our old Thule roof box got misaligned and popped off, and in the melee we managed to shear off the key while still inside the box. So I brought a non-closing roof box with half a key stuck inside to Rack Solid for advice and repair. The Rack Solid Berkeley team was AWESOME. I wasn't sure if we'd totally damaged the box and would need to buy a new one ($$$). Instead, the Rack Solid team very patiently walked me through all the options and considerations and quoted me a VERY reasonable price for repair. Lo and behold -- just 1 week later (keep in mind, I told them to make our box low-priority since we didn't have any travel coming up) Thalia called and had worked some magic, extracted the broken key extracted and reset all the wonky hinges. I paid the small fee and was on my way. Thank you Rack Solid team! So much great advice, communication patience, and expertise for such a great price. read more

I had cross bars and a cargo box installed by a different roof rack shop about a year ago and drove into a car wash, destroying my box. Francisco was much more helpful over the phone so I made the drive over from Petaluma. Francisco and Patrick went above and beyond and took the time to try my stroller into 3 different cargo boxes while I hung out and waited with my 2 kids. It was time to replace my 10 year-old bike rack and I realized that in order to remove it, it needed a key which I no longer had. I stopped at Rack Solid to ask if they had a master key. What they had was rings of master keys (old and new) and, amazingly the time to try them all. This lovely guy sat on the street with me for 30-40 minutes and went through hundreds of key before, voila!, he found the right one and pulled my rack off for me. What an act of kindness! Pros: the rack and cargo hitch I bought were reasonably priced and installed competently as far as I can tell. Cons: they left a wrench on my roof when I came to pick up the car, and I didn't notice it until I got home. Photo attached as proof because this is shockingly negligent. Other cons: the staff was generally disorganized and the manager was rude and apparently wandered off mid-day during my install, according to an employee. I was told it would take 90 minutes. I was able to pick it up about 4.5 hours later. It's 2020, and I do not expect everyone to be operating at peak performance, but leaving a wench on my roof? Come on. read more

This place is awesome. In 2021, I was in the middle of moving and had to get a roof box on a very tight timeline. Rack Solid had the exact box I needed and was super easy to pick it up. Come 2022, I broke the roof box by driving it into a garage (oops). Rack Solid was able to hook me up with a very niche piece I needed to repair the box. They FedEx'ed me the parts I needed so that I could fix it, since I couldn't put it on the car anymore. Rack Solid is awesome. Skip REI or shopping online and buy local from the pros who really know their stuff. read more

I came in to the store with a saris ex 2 rack that has been wobbly since it was installed. The tilting mechanism has been stiff since installation one year ago and locked up within a few uses. However over time the tilting mechanism became loose and tilted backwards threatening to dump my $7000 emtb into the road. I swung by and they replaced my tilting base with a spare part I received from saris under warranty in ten minutes and did not even charge me. This inspires considerable trust. I needed a roof rack and I thought this was the obvious choice. I drove down early hoping to be the first customer but found myself waiting at least 20 minutes after opening hours with the doors still closed and no body in sight. Finally someone showed up and did a great job helping me find exactly what I was looking for & even gave me a 10% discount. I was told my parts had been ordered and would take up to a week for delivery. One week goes by and I call in to check the status and was informed that my rack hasn't arrived but the parts HAVE been ordered. So, two weeks go by and I call again to check the status of my parts which I really needed cause I was leaving on a road trip the following weekend. I was told my parts were never order and the Thule website had been down for a week! Very disappointed to say the least.. So glad I made the call to see if they had what I was looking for in stock. Apparently they had a few that just came in in size sport, xl and xxl. Anyways Patrick did an awesome job finalizing my purchase and even showed me how to install the cargo box. So awesome of him to do that bc it was my first cargo box and it was quite heavy. Terrible service and expensive. Took them a few weeks to call me back. Ordered my trailer hitch on 4/26 and paid for it $230. It's 5/29 and still no peep from them. Hitch was supposed to come a few weeks back. Left them a message last week. No response. 5/31 finally got ahold of them. They said hitch came. So I scheduled an install with them. They said $500 which is ridiculous. They said because it's a Prius C will take some time because they need to remove the bumper. I asked them why they didn't tell me before as they knew what kind of car I had. I could have shopped around. They brought it down to $350 and said it would take 4 hours. I called another place with lots of good reviews on Yelp. The rack would have been the same cost but install only $50. Since I already have the rack it's $150 and only $45 minutes to install, but still cheaper than the crooks at rack solid. Stay away from Rack Solid. These guys are inept and crooks. Not sure how they got so many good reviews stating their prices are reasonable. Funny I just looked back on my notes. They quoted a price for install and it was less than $350. Crooks. read more

Not sure what to say about this business.... They are slow to respond, not particularly helpful and charge you full price before they do any work at all. When I picked up my car I noticed pretty significant scratches on the side of my car.... I can't confirm that they were responsible, but given the general vibe of the store, I wouldn't be surprised. Josh installed my roof rack and kayak rack on my 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid and he did a killer job. He explained how to easily pop on the kayak rack which I was easily able to do on my own at home since I didn't need to have it installed immediately and the roof rack is installed perfectly.
