Fishing in the Desolation Wilderness in the Sierra with gear/instruction from Fish First - A young boy stands on rocks by a mountain stream, casting a fishing line into the water on a sunny day.
    Andrew A.

I walked in to Fish First in early August to ask what I'd need to get started fly fishing for mountain trout. Four days later, I was catching brook trout in the Desolation Wilderness in the Sierra; two weeks later, the same thing, in the Trinity Alps! The guy I spoke with---whose name I don't remember, tragically---was extremely helpful and patient, never giving me the hard sell (even though I wanted to buy stuff!), showing me some of the basics, and directing me towards the right beginner gear (and a beginner instructional book) to buy.

    Rich H.

Summary based on a couple of visits: --helpful advice for novices --hard to judge prices, since there's essentially zero local competition (that I know about, anyway) --ok parking Extra star for unique resource.

This place does require patience. You'll need to walk in circles, dig through racks, and really search. But if you're willing to put in the time, it pays off. Over the years, I've scored $10 shorts, hats and gloves, $20 sweatpants and shirts, and $40 sweatshirts and jackets. The prices have gone up a bit since the early days, but compared to retail and their standard outlet stores, but the deals are still amazing. This place is the OG. If you allow time for parking and give yourself a solid hour to browse, you're almost guaranteed to walk out with a treasure or two. At this point, I own so much North Face gear that I've been asked more than once if I'm sponsored... I wish.

It is huge with two different sides. Due to its size, there are more options of everything. I generally at least find one item when I make a trip out here. I've found a long down jacket before for the price of $60 when MSRP'd at $400. Denali and Nuptse jackets are rare to find. You will have to take your time and look at everything. Expect to be in there for 30 min to an hour if you like to sort through everything. Employees have always been nice and helpful. I always stop by when heading out to the bay or passing by. I never make a trip just to go to this store, or else you put yourself up for disappointment. It's an outlet! Like I said- hit or miss.

I've gotten accustomed to skiing in pain over my 40+ years of skiing, and previous boot fittings never quite yielded the results i wanted. I have odd shaped feet - like a cartoon duck. narrow in the back and wide and square at the toes. high volume boots never quite fit right as they would still be narrow at the toes, but then way too loose in the back with a lot of heel lift. thermal liners never seemed to solve any of my problems. punches seemed to help, but never remove the problem. enter Paul. this man is a gift sent from the goddess Skadi. He assured me my feet weren't that far out of band, and proceeded to tweak the best fitting boot i've ever used. I can go a full day charging with minimal discomfort. i dont have to undo the buckles every lift ride up. i wanted to wait out the season before i gave a review as I wanted to see how well the results held up over several days, but the 5 stars is well warranted. i've decided to try learning telemark this season, and finding any boot has been extremely difficult. there are not many models, and even fewer stock of said models, whether used or new. but once i find a boot, you can be sure i'll be bringing it to Paul (who claims to have never fitted a telemark boot, but i'm going to convince him to give it a go).

Careless customer treatment won't bring me back here…read more New, not so knowledgeable clerk showed me e-bikes, arranged to get the model he sold me on, then let store sell it to someone else. Glad I learned that's how they roll before I bought from Mike's Bikes Berkeley. I can imagine getting service from them is probably similarly sloppy and inattentive.

Really overpriced for repairs and they have terrible policies. (Go to Tip Top Bikes or anywhere…read moreelse). A spoke broke on my back wheel. Then it broke again a few months later. I took it to Mike's Bikes both times and it cost $80 each time to replace a spoke! Then the spoke (or a different spoke) broke again about a week after the 2nd time. They said they'd re-do it for free, but I should really just replace the whole back wheel. I suggested they just apply the $80 bucks' worth of labor they were about to give me and apply it towards a new rear wheel, which was going to run somewhere between $100 and $200 and I'd pay the difference. The manager wouldn't do that. So they fixed the spoke a third time, and when I picked it up -- having to take the bus each time -- he said I really should get the rear wheel replaced and that it wasn't safe to ride. As if he cared about my safety!! The spoke broke again about a week after that 3rd repair, but I surely won't take it back to Mike's Bike's! I've made an appointment to get the rear wheel replaced at a different shop. It was a frustrating saga with Mike's Bikes and a huge waste of my time and money. I think they're really only interested in selling high-end bikes, not in providing any kind of decent or cost-effective repairs.
