I had been buying bike accessories from Blue Heron, plus experienced their ability to get me a new tire installed on the spot. This happened 13 years ago. I finally decided to try them for servicing my Ebike, a Riese & Muller Roadster. Their shop is much more conveniently located than my regular shop and I can ride there, rather than loading the bike on a rack and driving there. What I'd been missing with my old shop was knowing who people were and getting in-person feedback on whatever needed to be fixed. They had expanded and the service, while still good, was getting very distant, in terms of knowing who actually worked on my bike. Blue Heron reminds me of what my old shop was like. The shop is small, crowded with new bikes and bikes being serviced. The people I dealt with were friendly and went over what they'd do on a basic tune-up. They replaced what I figured they'd replace, chain, brake pads, adjusted the derailleur, etc. What I didn't expect were all the little things. They found some missing screws, replaced those. They also adjusted the fenders for alignment and got rid of the stray rattles that the bike has had since I purchased it. They trued up the rear wheel too, which is pretty standard, but it made a difference. I also noticed they cured the problem with the derailleur moving the chain down from the biggest gear in the cassette when I would back the bike out of the garage. It now stays put. The bike has never felt this solid before. It now rides the way I had hoped it would from the beginning. I'll have to stop by later this week to thank Jordan and his mechanics for a job well-done. A good review is one thing, but I believe that the personal service I received deserves a personal reply. Five stars! read more

My lunch got dropped when I fell off because the seat was higher than when I dropped it off . I went to get on and fell face forward I went in to tell them , got blown off and requested to see the manage. He simply debated about my seat being fine , said sorry I don't know what to tell you attitude . Going to the Doctor , getting it documented if it's more serious than i think . What was once a leading bike shop has become a shadow of its former self. A transfer of ownership of the business has lead to a poor quality customer service experience, declining quality of mechanical services, and a toxic working environment for employees that has produced a high turnover rate for personnel in the business, and a lack of consistency in terms of how service and maintenance is completed. New ownership has created a toxic environment for patrons as well. Rather than providing services patrons are asking for, rather, they are now being told what services will be done for them rather than what they are asking to be done. In other words, customers are being expected to take what the business wants to do for them, rather than being responsive to their needs. Again, this is all a result of the change in ownership and management of the business, and a previously high quality shop has sunk into toxicity for both employees and patrons. I did my research in advance, and Blue Heron seemed to be the only shop in Berkeley that had brands of bikes that met my needs. After stopping in, I didn't have to go elsewhere. I was helped by Josh. A little discusson of bikes relevant to my needs, then two test rides was all it took. I purchased a bike on the spot. I went into blue Heron bikes yesterday for an issue with a bike that I have in Mexico with very few specifications and yet the help that I got from Rob was as if I was buying a $10,000 bicycle. There are so few businesses left in this world that give you that kind of caring and attentive service for the potential of very little gain that I was really impressed. Competent, friendly, helpful. I bought a part for my bike and asked about other aspects of my bike. Although unrelated to the part I bought, their service technician was happy to talk to me for a half hour, for free, giving me advice about my bike, none of which involved buying anything from them. Do you like to feel frustrated and waste your time? Well then this is the bike shop for you. The other day I called to schedule an appointment to have my rear wheel checked out to ensure it was mounted correctly. (I replaced my tire and I was unfamiliar with a roller brake and a Shimano Nexxus hub.) They said it wouldn't be a problem and to bring it in. This morning, when I brought the bike in, I was told that because it was an after market e bike that they wouldn't work on it. I explained that they had worked on the bike previously and he said that they no longer do that. I asked him why didn't you look at my information when you scheduled the appointment to save me the trouble of taking the time to come all the way out here, and he said those were just words on the screen. I asked if he would make an exception since there was a pretty big miscommunication here and all I was asking him to do was ensure that the wheel was on correctly and he said no, and then he had the audacity to say that he would update my information in the database. I'm not mad at them for not working on the bike. I'm frustrated that they would schedule an appointment on a bike that they had worked on before, where he had all the information that would have told him not to schedule me, and I took the time off of work to come over only to be turned away, and then told he would add that information to my profile , even though he said he didn't look at it when I scheduled the appointment. Bad communication. Rude. Totally unhelpful. Complete waste of my time. read more

My family has been customers for several years--purchased an e-bike, locks and accessories, repairs. But when I took my e-bike in for a tube replacement, the manager flat out refused to make the repair saying they don't work on rear-hub powered e-bikes (the flat was on the front, LOL) and implied that I had purchased it on the internet (I bought it from a dealer in another town). He offered to see me a tube and tire irons, but wouldn't do the work. I took the bike to another shop--where it was done in 15 minutes--and will not patronize this store again. read more

Extremely helpful, friendly, community-oriented business. I went in with my then 4-year old to get a bike headlight, and in the course of "installing," I asked why the front handlebars seemed to be twisting. The associate showed me where the screw holding the front tire was about to fall off the frame, and tightened it for free, probably saving my kid from an accident that night. I feel stupid now for letting my partner buy a kids bike on Amazon- it is a clunky PoS. Blue Heron has a great selection of lightweight kids bike, and next time I will for sure shop locally. It's a nice store but watch out for them hitting you with unexpected service charges. I came in with a wheel already removed to make sure I got the right tire. The register dude helped me pick a tire and without asking put it on the wheel. Took him 2 seconds and 0 tools. Charged me 20$ extra for labor. I complained about charging for service I didn't want without asking and got no satisfaction. Other people I know that go there have said this store's culture has changed for the worse. I'm all for supporting local businesses but this place is not well run. Lost a component of my bike during a repair and getting a proper estimate was like pulling teeth. Make sure you confirm prices on manufacturer sites before purchasing here because they will overcharge you and the manager was not very helpful. read more

I LOVE this local bike shop. Been coming here well over a decade. What keeps me coming back: incredibly friendly staff who are encouraging, patient and thorough with their bike work. In my experience, they will kindly go the extra mile to make sure your bike is just right. There's a great selection of bike safety gear (lights, vests, etc), seats and helmets. I can usually find what I'm looking for, and if not then an employee gives me suggestions on where to get the parts. It's great that the shop is right off the bike/pedestrian path, very easy to access. I hope they stay in business forever. read more

I have been in bike stores all over the world... And this is top notch. I'm not even a local and they treated me like I was one of the family. At least four people came outside to ask me if I needed help. Ray... the one who worked on my bike, went above and beyond the call of duty at making my bike perfect. Not only are they all so friendly but Ray has a knowledge of Bike Friday... which most stores don't know anything about. The owner came out as well and he was Equally as attentive and friendly. While I was there at many locals were coming and going having to need to tend to and test riding bicycles. The staff seem to have a deep knowledge of many kinds of bicycles as well as electric snf folding bikes.I cannot say enough good things About Blue heron. read more

I'm not a bike person myself so this review will be written through that lens. I will say that we received excellent customer service from Lucas last week. My kid's bike had a repair/ replacement of a part. It took about 20 minutes and Lucas did not have to do the replacement then and there but he did that day. He made recommendations about the bike's other maintenance needs but did not push hard for more service or purchases. The cost was reasonable too. I did call in advance and another staff member did warn us that they might not be able to see us then and there (may need to make an appointment for a future date)but there was a chance the bike could be repaired upon arrival. Other pluses: right next to the Ohlone Greenway, next to a cute cafe, Coffee Conscious, parking behind shop, and not too far from San Pablo Avenue in case you need to use the bus. read more

Bought my first E bike there in 2014 and have had great service ever since. Dragged myself and bike in after accidents. After a tree fell on me and my Faraday in Emeryville I limped in and they fixed up all the broken bits. Only thing they couldn't fix was my rotator cuff....had to send me out to the bone quack for that ...but they fixed every little thing. read more

I was biking to the bank and ended up with a flat tire a block away from Blue Heron. The people who work there are super nice! A guy helped me immediately and spotted a nail in my tire. Oops. He replaced my tube super fast. He even fixed my frame, which was rubbing against my tire. I'll definitely be back if my bike needs a tune-up. read more

Always heard weird things about this place, my friends had bad experiences, but I never saw it myself. I was walking my dog at around 10pm (admittedly late), he led the way, and we walked past the Blue Heron. They had a neat old fashioned bike display (made of lugnuts?) in the window, which was lit up, so I was looking at it with my dog near me, and then the intercom above me went off: "Your presence has been noticed by security. My chain broke and they did not carry the type of chain my bike needed. however they fixed the broken link and got my bike working again. i greatly appreciate that they have a parking lot since my car is really big and I don't know how to parallel park it in the street. i will keep coming here just for the parking lot and kind customer service read more

Every tube I have bought from this place has had a slow leak. I keep going back because I have shopped here for years but the last tuneup they did on my bike really screwed up my bike up. Great selection, and the staff knows the stock well and can answer any question. I live across the Bay and was looking to try out as many cargo ebikes as I could before investing what would inevitably be a lot of money. all the bike shops I went to here recommended Blue Heron. I can see why! All of the brands they carry (for the specific needs I mentioned) are high quality, so pricey, but I'm confident that for less fancy needs they have a variety of price points. Phil was very accommodating, letting me try any bike I wanted, and being honest about the pros and cons for each. They put together my bike quickly, with all of the extra kids seats and panniers I wanted. I feel confident that any of my future needs with this bike will be addressed should I make it out to them again, though I think I need to make friends with someone with a flatbed truck or pickup first, haha (those cargo bikes are BIG--too big for BART elevators!). very conveniently located in Berkeley, right off a bike trail and near a fabulous beer garden. read more

Brought a kids bike that I bought used for a tuneup. They took a look at it and told me I didn't need it and that only a couple things needed to be done. And also that there was a 2 week wait for tuneups. They fixed his brakes and adjusted his fork all for under $20. They also did an overall checkup and let me know everything else was good. This was done in 30 minutes while I waited. I would highly recommend this place. read more
