The first time, I came by to get air in my tires since I haven't rode my bike at all during the pandemic. There's a pump outside but the staff waved me in so they can use their "pump gun" (my terms, I actually don't know what it's called) to do a quick recharge. Fast forward to more recent happening, I bring my bike (I first try the outside pump) but same drill - staff offer to help. Only this time, it seemed to take extra longer than a few minutes - I find out after 20 minutes or so that my rear wheel is somehow crooked and the staff had detached my wheel and bent it back in shape. What above and beyond service! They have a tip pocket by the way - I will bring cash next time. So fortunate to have these people & bike shop around me! P.S. I think a new cafe replaced the long vacated modern coffee that shares the space - thus more reason to frequent! read more

I keep expecting there to be a catch - it's free to valet your bike and if you need any work done on your bike they get it done super fast and at very low cost. The staff is so nice and it's clear that they really love bikes. You just bike up and drop your bike with the person at the door. It only takes them seconds to get your bike when you need it later. I was so very pleasantly surprised when I needed a new chain yesterday. I expected getting parts to take awhile but it was done perfectly in a couple of hours. I'll definitely be taking my bike here when it needs repairs. It is extra easy because my bike is already there at the valet! read more

I have used both the bike valet and repair services and Berkeley Bike Station, and have had a great experience with both. I recently got help from their mechanic, Sam, with two different issues on my bike (brake pad drag and shifting problems). Sam was able to diagnose and repair both quickly. The costs were also very reasonable and communication was great - Sam always texts info about the diagnosis, costs, and repair timeline before completing the work. One of the best parts about the repair services is you can drop your bike off to park for the day (I park there to go classes at Berkeley City College the street) and the mechanic will look at it (and often fix it) before you pick it up again at the end of the day. The location is also transit-friendly, being just around the corner from BART and many bus lines. read more

The quality of the bicycle repair work at the Berkeley BART Bike Station is excellent. A lot of folks can twist a wrench well, Sam does. However, that is only part of what makes this shop a special place. At the shop, the person I worked with was Sam. With a proper N95, friendly voice, and smile lines around the eyes, Sam made me feel welcome when we met at the door. Patrons are asked to stay outside to minimize risk of COVID-19 exposure, and the staff come out to talk to you. I like that. I wanted a tune up on my old bike and to have a set of fenders, which I brought in, installed on my bike. Sam asked me some questions about my bike and the fenders, then quoted me a great price, told me they would call me if anything unexpected came up, and told me that my bike would be ready that evening. I said great, took my receipt ticket and went on my way. When Sam got in touch that afternoon, there was a hitch with a plastic part that I supplied for the fenders. I wasn't there to see it, but Sam said that the part broke while adjusting it. They took full responsibility for breaking the part, apologized, and told me that a new part, which they would pay for, was en route. They made every effort to be sure I was accommodated in the meantime. Today, my bike runs smoothly, people admire my beautiful new fenders, and I am grateful to have found a high quality bike repair shop where the staff are honest, fair dealing, and friendly. Actually much better than "Missing Link" and the best option in the larger Berkeley area for bicycle repair I would know of. 6 stars! This review is for their repair service. I brought my bike in on a weekday because the shifting was messed up and the headset felt strange. I didn't know exactly what the issue was, but the person who checked me in was very patient and asked great questions. They took my bike in and just a few hours later I got a text message saying that my bike was ready for pickup, with a PDF bill of the charges clearly identified. I almost cried when I saw it, because it was VERY reasonable (even less than their quoted cost) and I couldn't believe they fixed it so quickly. Another shop in Berkeley looked at my bike and quoted more than $120 with a 3 day turnaround time. Geez! There was no way I could have my bike be out for that long since it's how I commute to work every day. So I decided to continue to bike to work on just a couple of gears and hope for the best...Finally, I found Berkeley Bike Station and they saved the day. When I went to pick up my bike, Ray came out to explain what the issue was. It turns out the shifting cable was broken and he showed me the little piece that broke off. It was gnarly. Ray replaced the cable and fixed the headset bearing. I do my own basic bike maintenance (tires, tubes, brake pads, cleaning chain, etc) but there was no way I'd be able to figure this out on my own. Thanks! This is my first Yelp review, ever. I feel so strongly about this place that I got over my aversion to Yelp to post this. I finally tried out the BikeLink parking station. It was pretty easy and convenient. After setting up my BikeLink account online, I showed my ID and paid $5 for activating the account. After that, I locked and stored my bike at the station and went on my way to see my friends. I have not been using the services offered this time around but I'm looking forward to using the parking station again. It only cost me 7 cents for almost 6 hours! Make sure to bring your lock because you still have to lock it to the spot. They also have lockers for 25cents if you need to lock your stuff. Overall, I would use them again to lock my bike. It took the worry about finding a spot where it might or might not get stolen. read more

I have a road bike with 700mm rims, so you'd think replacing a tube would be standard procedure. However, about a month after I had my tube replaced, I noticed a lot of weird things happening. My tire stopped holding air again, and it rode as though it desperately needed truing - despite the fact that it showed no signs of lopsidedness when I spun it. It turns out that the good people at the Bike Station thought it would be cool to use a huge ass janky tube that was about 7 inches too big for my wheels. They had folded it over a few times to make it fit, and that's what was causing the bumpiness/air leaks. Perhaps it's unfair for me to give them this rating after only doing business one time, but honestly if they are willing to do something like that behind the customer's back then I will never trust them with my bike or my money again. +1 because I like the idea of bike parking and lord knows how much we need it... read more

I went here this morning because my chain kept getting stuck due to a bent chainring. I was helped by this guy named Thomas. He diagnosed the problem and let me know that it was going to be really expensive to repair. Then, Thomas did something magical and thought of alternative solutions to help with the cost. THEN Thomas did something even MORE magical. He tried a more... cost effective solution, and basically unbent the chainring for me. VOILA! Problem solved, and literally in the matter of 3 minutes. Thomas was also nice enough to lower my bike seat since I didn't have the proper tool to do so. Long story short, Thomas is the shit. He was really friendly, offered great advice and wasn't out to steal my money. You win at life, Thomas. read more

I used this service for about a month, probably three or four times a week. It's really easy to set up, and extremely easy to use. Just walk in, fill out the claim card, and leave your bike. When you return, give them the claim card, get your bike, and leave. They're fast, and very, very friendly. Never had a bad interaction with the staff. Bikestation Berkeley provides free valet bike parking -- they have a massive caged area inside the Downtown Berkeley BART station where they will gladly keep your bike safe and dry for up to a week at a time! ($3 / night if you leave it more than one night). I use them for my daily commute, and I've also used them for week-long trips out of OAK. Because of the bike station, I've managed to stop driving during the week. How cool is that? There are mechanics on duty (check the schedule on the door) who can tune up and fix your bike. They also sell helmets, locks, and bike lights for cheap. This place, and its great staff, make bike commuting so easy. I don't have to carry a lock, and I know if I have a flat I can buy a tube from them and use their pump. Oh, and they also provide free wireless. Woot! I can get on-line downstairs at the platform while I'm waiting for my train. They also have the distinction of being open earlier and later than any normal bike store downtown, which really comes in handy when you absolutely need to fix something at 7:30am or 8:30pm. Near to Berkeley Bart, great free bike parking from 7am to 9pm weekdays. Perfect for commuting. Also have a basic selection of bike stuff and they do bike rentals. 35$ a day super casual rental for simple but very reasonable bikes. Protip: the first door as you come from Bart is locked and only for the 24 hour bike access. For everything else use the south door. read more

So handy and convenient, and with great customer service (the front desk guys would top up my tires with the air compressor without hesitation, if I asked them). I am so grateful this service exists, because it completely took the hassle out of my commute to SF from Berkeley, knowing that my lovely bicycle was safely stored away. And for FREE!!!! The front lobby offers good solid bike accessories, and the front desk guys are never pushy, only serving the bicycling community as nerdy, knowledgeable resources. Excellent valet bike parking, half a block from BART! I do the bike-to-BART thing to get from home (Berkeley) to work (SOMA). I've taking my bike through the system once or twice, but I don't usually bother --- I mostly need the bike for my Berkeley-side commute. That's where the Bike Station comes in. This is the new location of the old "cage" inside the Berkeley station. More room, plus the separate card-access room for late nights (the main valet service closes at 9 pm). Staff is excellent --- Jim's always helpful, ask Adam about his bike journalism sideline, and have a look at David's bikes. I'm pretty well stocked for spare parts and doo-dads, but if you're not there's a small repair-and-accessory business here as well. read more

I've now done the bike valet a few times. As I expected, that was great. One night I ended up renting a ZipCar overnight and left it. They have an overnight fee, but when I went to pick it up the next day and they guy waived it for me. He explained if people abuse it, then sure. Otherwise, no problem. I mostly do the 24/7 parking still, but if I know I'll be back before 9pm, I opt for valet parking. read more

This is a great concept and is very well run, with friendly and helpful employees and a space that feels secure. It is sponsored by the city and BART. I didn't use any of their services but I did stop in to check it out. You can park your bike securely for free during staffed hours and for pennies an hour at other times with a $20 card. The bike station is a wonderful addition to the city and should be treasured by everyone in the region. You can bike to BART or just to spend some time walking around downtown, and leave your bike clean and dry without fear of theft, damage. If you need any repairs or adjustements, the staff can do it for you while you're working. Nine stars, would be ten if they came to Boston where I need a bike station. read more

I've been riding my bike to and from BART for over two years now, and the Berkeley Bike Station makes it all possible. The station offers a safe, secure lockup for your bike, staffed by very nice people, and their hours work well for commuters. I've had many a bike trashed and stolen in Berkeley, and the ability to leave a bike in clean, accessible, dry surroundings---for free!!!!---and retrieve it, intact, at the end of every day seems like a miracle. This should be the model for bike stations at all transit locations, and with luck and somewhat intelligent public planning, it will be. Also--they do bike repairs, sell some bike gear, know bikes very well, and, most important, they sometimes have cookies! I'll stop going on about it now, but the take-away thought is this: The Berkeley Bike Station is great and deserves lots of community support. read more

Their bike parking service is a lifesaver when I have to separate from my bike while downtown. I use the street lockups for something quick like running into the bank, but if I have to go to a meeting or even a lunch, it's such a relief to have secure parking. The thing that pushes this place from great to stratospheric, though, is that they can fix your bike, and that they open earlier than the other nearby bike shops. This is HUGE for me, as I can't leave work at 10 or 11 and push/walk a round trip. Today, not just my tube but my tire failed on my ride to work. I hoofed onward to the next BART, was whisked to within a block of Bike Station. There, the guy said, "give me 20 minutes". He had a quality tire in stock, the right size. I came back in 15, and it was already done. Completely friendly, too - and not pushy or up-selling. I don't know how to give this enough emphasis: bike commuting, for all its myriad joys, comes with a list of contingencies, worries, or hassles. Theft risk and breakdowns are in the top five, and Bike Station mitigates them handily. This is an example of a business that really thoughtfully contributes to making a bicycle-based lifestyle possible. Witness also the attached BikeLink facility that lets one card in securely and store one's bike after hours. I would not go to movies, meet friends for dinner, or splurge occasionally on Freight or Rep tickets in downtown Berkeley without this support. read more
