Based on the awesome reviews I took my bike in to see what was wrong. Nothing was yet Mike filled up my tires anyway. I called a head for some cycling shoes and cleats. The sales guy on the phone gave me a range of shoe sizing and pricing. They allowed me to walk in and try on the shoes they also took the time to mount the cleats on the cycling shoe. That one on one customer service makes a great bike shop. I recently had a bike with numerous problems that needed almost a complete replacement of every part of the drive chain (except the crank itself). While most bike shops would have tried to up-sell me on a new bike and laugh at the old one, they actually listened and did a fantastic job of repairing what was needed. They were reasonable, but not cheap, in their estimation and ultimate cost of repair - no lowball estimates here. This review is overdue. I called BCW after a bike crash in mid-May to have a tire and tube moved from an old damaged rim to a new front rim. Mike answered and let me know they were pretty booked but would do his best to get to my bike if I was willing to leave it. His estimate was fair ($40) and included straightening my brake levers and a quick inspection ride and slight truing of the new rim. He delivered it two days later as promised. I am a supporter of small business, especially if they give good service and carry a good product at a great value. I came here looking for a commuter/hybrid bike and the owner, Mike, hooked me up. Looks like his main product line is Giant. I test rode a couple of bikes and got excited about one of them. Given that it was a model from last year, it was discounted. For me the latest model didn't matter as I wasn't very picky, and I just wanted a quality bike. Picked up a few accessories for the bike as well and was happy with the recommendations given by Mike. I actually left the store and went to REI and test rode a few bikes there too. Not to diss REI because I really like them too, but Mike gave me the best value on a bike that worked best for me, and gave me the personal attention. I popped in with a tire I was trying to change the cassette on, and Mike helped me change the cassette, explained why I was having trouble getting it off, pointed out some wear on my gears, fixed the stem placement on my tire, and inflated it- all kindly and for free. I simply bought a four dollar spacer! This is in contrast to another Berkeley bike shop where I bought the new tire and they wouldn't put it in (even fur a service charge) because their service was backed up. I understand first come first serve for service, but to be passing through town and buy a product and not have the tools to put that product on the bike (in what us about a 20-30 minute process) Was really frustrating. Just had a great experience buying a bike for my son here. I wasn't even planning on coming to this shop I was on my way to another shop down the street and just happened to see it when I was stopped at a light on San Pablo. My intuition told me to turn into the parking lot and I'm so glad I did. The first bike he showed me was perfect. Light hybrid Giant bike great for street and trail riding (we live on the marina Bay trail). Got hooked up with a lock, helmet, kick stand and water proof bike cover for exactly in my budget. I was even able to take a video on the sales guy showing us how to handle the tricky Kriptonite lock. They also have a year store warranty for tune ups. Awesome! My son is very happy with the new Giant bike I bought at Berkeley Cycle Works. Mike knows everything about bikes, and was genuinely interested in helping my son find the right bike. It was a very no-pressure sale. The price was fantastic, and he installed the accessories very quickly. Mike was very patient and helpful, and just made the purchase a whole lot of fun. There are a lot of expensive bicycles these days, but my son just needed one to ride to school. But it shouldn't look like it just wobbled out of Kmart, right? I think Mike gave us a great value on a bike that wasn't very expensive, but still has a lot of quality and a great appearance. He didn't try to up-sell us to something more expensive. He understood that it was just for riding to school and locking up every day. The Giant product line he carries is excellent. They used to manufacture Trek and Specialized bicycles, and now they manufacture their own. The quality of the frames, paint and components is excellent, and there's a lot of breadth to the product line, from inexpensive cruisers up to serious, multi-thousand dollar road and mountain bikes. Giant is definitely a brand to consider when buying a bike, at any price range. Their value is fantastic and I don't see any compromises at all. read more

I was now going to be late to work and they took my bike in super fast, treated me with respect and were super friendly (haven't always had that in the city), helped me navigate tires because I knew I might need a new one (and didn't try to push the most expensive one) and then left me a phone message with updates. When I showed up later to pick my bike up, they had not only put the new tire on, but also oiled my chain and straightened my handle bars out. THAT is great customer service. I'm sold. Not impressed with this GIANT dealer. I just want to buy thru-axles for my GIANT Advanced 3. The guy told me I can't convert QR to thru. Not what I asked. Then he said I would need to bring the bike in. Then he didn't believe that I needed axles at all "because the wheels would have just fallen off if you didn't have them..." Great shop - it's even got the shop dog (Guinness) for that old school vibe. I just bought a higher-end Giant road bike from them, which naturally had to be ordered. I must say, I was a little nervous pulling the trigger, but Mike worked with me to get me what I wanted, including a few upgrades and dialed in the fit as well. Mike even tolerated a few price comparisons from web sites and met those prices for the add-ons. After visiting several Giant dealers, I was the most comfortable with Berkeley Cycle Works - even if it meant I had to drive an hour to get my bike. I think they like what they do, and it shows. For a woman who is looking for a stable yet light bike, the Giant is a trusted brand (my mother owns one for 13 years...still good as new!). First, when I called Berkeley Cycle Works, my questions were responded to in a polite and professional manner by Mike (who I later found was the owner). Second, when I went to the shop, WOW - they have free parking for customers. It's a clean and nice looking shop. And, Mike went out of his way to allow me to pick my bikes back up after only a few hours (long story but it would have been a bit inconvenient to stop back on another day as I don't always drive 2 bikes around). Last but not least, the shop finished the work quicker and for less money than originally quoted. Tip: if you have to wait around for work to be done, there are a number of nice shops to walk by, shop at, or have tea or coffee in the area. Even a Sprouts and Whole Foods Market for healthy groceries or a sit-down meal. read more
