I love this shop. They're so reliable and trustworthy. It's like having your best friend being a bike mechanic. I've relied on them for several tuneups and servicing. The most recent was due to my chain getting stretched and it started slipping. There's another shop that's closer to me and they looked at my bike and said I might be in for many hundreds of dollars in repairs. Stay True did the repairs (new chain and cassette) for $77. Made an appointment, brought it in, and it was ready for me the next day. Couldn't have expected a better outcome! read more

I rarely review places, because I know how damaging a bad review can be, and one bad encounter should not harm a business. But the two star review on here has the same issue that I had with the bald guy with the beard, and that was two years ago so evidently nothing has changed. He has anger issues and was so threatening that it leaves me questioning the authenticity of the many 5 star reviews on here. Perhaps he knows a lot about bikes, but he thinks that makes up for his extreme aggression. I am not a large person, and am not belligerent nor confrontational. I walk in with my e-bike, hoping to get a flat tire replaced, and I am immediately told by the bald guy that he doesn't work on my type of bike, and he erroneously calls it a motorcycle. This is NOT the part I have an issue with - I fully understand if there are some bikes he doesn't want to work on, and I am perfectly fine with that. I ask him one time if he can at least help with the chain, and point out that there's an issue with the pedals, and I was perfectly ok leaving without incident if he said no. I can't stress enough that I was not making a fuss or trying to cause an issue or being demanding/entitled in any way. He immediately storms up to me, and yells "Are you arguing with me?!" I immediately leave, muttering a few choice words about the man. The whole interaction took place in the span of 30 seconds, and I don't understand how this type of service is lauded by these reviews. Even if the store was of extremely high quality, I'd expect there to be at least a few 4 or 3 star reviews, especially with this type of service and how little it took to set this guy off. I went to another store, Mike's Bikes on University Ave, and while they said they don't work on e-bikes, they were incredibly helpful in assisting me to find a store that does. It really was that simple. I can't speak to the quality of work, but I can speak to this employee's behavior: it's vitriolic and condescending. read more

Needed a new derailleur hanger for my bike after bending mine to fix some shifting issues. Called a few shops, but Stay True were the only ones who 1) immediately knew what I was talking about 2) confirmed the exact part I needed 3) ordered it no questions asked. Stay True is a rad shop - I brought in my road bike to swap some bars following a crash. The bars required internal cable routing which is a tome consuming job. The shop gave me a very fair quote and over delivered on finishing the job - meaning they got me back in the saddle in a shorter time frame than they quoted. I also had a great time chatting with them in the shop. Believe the owner is involved with the local high school cycling team which is just soooo incredible to see a LBS involved in the community. guess i'm not cool enough for this place; i practically got 'shushed' out of the place. i went to check the place out to consider having them do some work on some classic projects (read: Labor; a shops highest profit margin). had to practically push my way past the bald-ish guy glowering around the front door, and observed that the other guy behind the counter seemed to be personable enough and the one doing most of the work interacting with the people that came in. Bald'ish guy seemed to have a hard time interacting with humans though it would appear he's familiar enough with bikes. fortunately, there are enough other shops around we don't have to go to a place where we have to work at dealing with someone anti-social. read more

I recently upgraded to a Fox 34, needed a new crown race installed and also wanted to rebuild my RockShox Pike to 140mm. There are probably around 10 bike shops in the East Bay closer by to me, but Stay True Cycles will be my go-to whenever I need work done on any of my bikes as long as I live here. In the past, my experiences at other bike shops have not been great: I haven't trusted that they knew what they were doing. Or, they have seemed like they were just fear-mongering, telling me that things were wrong with my bike that weren't really wrong in an attempt to upsell me. Additionally, even when I've needed some fairly minor work done, I have had to schedule an appointment a couple weeks out. I have now come to Stay True Cycles several times for some minor adjustments and to have a new derailleur installed. My bikes and I are very happy. My experience with Jonah and Stay True Cycles has been the exact opposite of past bike shop experiences: they are always honest, reasonably priced, don't try to upsell me, clearly know what they are doing, and get the job done extraordinarily quickly. And it's a fun and friendly vibe in the shop. Oh, and Stay True Cycles is in a great location -- just a couple blocks from Berkeley Bowl West, Third Culture Bakery, and Standard Fare. So it's easy to productively and/or deliciously kill time while your bike is being worked on. read more

TLDR - Going to Stay True is a win for 1) your bike 2) your mental health, cause the mechanics won't make you feel stupid, and 3) the community. Since I started riding, I've experienced (what feels like) the repair experience at almost every shop, and especially the shops that specialize in mountain bikes. And I rarely felt "good" after dropping my bike off at a shop. Mechanics constantly made me feel bad about poor repairs I had tried to do myself, or about all the things I didn't know about my bike (even though I was trying hard to learn about it). it's not a great feeling to enjoy a sport as much as I enjoyed biking, but have such a hard time finding a place that I could trust for a good repair and good experience. Stay True has ABSOLUTELY BEEN THE SAVING GRACE OF BIKE SHOPS for me. Nick and Jonah are constantly teaching me new things about my bike, and always providing GREAT service. Oh, and somehow they also end up being super affordable. In addition to being great mechanics, this is truly a "community" shop. Just walk in there for five minutes and see the crew of characters walking in out from around the neighborhood, shooting the shit with the mechanics. This place is located in a part of Berkeley with a good amount of parking, easy to find. I exchanged emails with Nick about my desire to buy a gravel bike and he promptly responded to all my emails. I went to the store and he patiently answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable. He seemed to know a lot more than I could digest because I just started looking at bikes. He was very patient and did not rush me at all. I recently got a Cannondale Bad boy 2 and tried to do the bike build myself. When I finished the gears were jumping by themselves and there was a loud chirping noise coming from the brake pads. I went to Stay True Cycles as it was closest to my house and was a small business so I thought why not. The place is great, Nick knows a ton about bikes and they follow covid safety very well. He said it'll take $115 for a tune up and it'll be good to rock. Not only was he right and the bike is now smooth as butter but he also only charged me $75 since most of the bike was built and new. I stopped in by chance for a flat repair, and they took care of it, but that's what anybody would expect from any bike shop. The reason I'm giving this place 5 stars is because of Nick. I noticed they sold Marin bikes, which just happen to be the brand I'm considering buying next, so I started asking questions. Although they were busy, Nick expertly juggled conversations. He educated me about bike features without being condescending, and helped me understand how to make decisions about whether I want certain features or not. In the course of conversation he revealed that he helped establish the single-track trails at McLaughlin park. I shared with him that those trails helped pull me out of an emotional malaise when I found them a couple months ago, and now I ride them several times a week.
