Brought a kids bike that I bought used for a tuneup. They took a look at it and told me I didn't need it and that only a couple things needed to be done. And also that there was a 2 week wait for tuneups. They fixed his brakes and adjusted his fork all for under $20. They also did an overall checkup and let me know everything else was good. This store is pretty far from where we live, but they were one of the few that had both of the two electric cargo bikes we were interested in and they sounded more helpful than the other places I called. They were indeed friendly and helpful in person as well. They have a wide selection of electric bikes and are generous with their test rides. They also have us a bit of a discount in return for spending the savings on some accessories. :) There is a bike path and some moderate hills nearby, so you can get a good feel for the bikes. About a year after we bought our bike, we had a problem with it. They managed to diagnose and come up with a fix on the phone. Awesome service, as I was dreading the long drive to the store. We live a ways away from Berkeley and came here solely on the customer service we received on the phone when my Husband spoke to Rob. Rob was very patient, explained in great deal all the inns and outs of the bike my husband was interested in and was just as kind as could be. We've taken our bikes there for adjustments and repairs and the prices have always been very reasonable. Oh I did mention customer service earlier. I have to expand a bit. One day we were in the shop and I see this white/pink bike and ask if I can rake a test drive, of course Rob said yes.. This bike fit me like a glove (I'm a shorty) and I fell in love with it. Wow! this store and the people who work here are amazing! If we could give this place a 6th star, we would! We bought two electric bikes (Gazelle CityZen T9) and the service from the first second on was nothing short than outstanding!! We felt a bit shaky about the large expense, but we quickly learned that with this store and Rob, the head store person, we can buy here with confidence knowing that we will be taken care of, no matter what would happen with our bikes. We liked the sitting position on a different electric bike, but loved the strong Bosch motor, battery and disc brakes on the CityZen. Rob offered to modify the handle bar to make these bikes' sitting position more upright and fun. For more than a reasonable fee of $150 extra per bike (this was a major job since all cables, who run mostly through the bikes' frame needed to be replaced with longer ones to fit the new and bigger handlebar), Rob and his crew created the perfect e-bikes for our needs - strong and so much fun to ride! If that wasn't enough, Rob helped us to transport the bikes home, lending us equipment that allowed us to fit one of these bikes on a conventional bike rack. And if THAT wasn't enough, when one of the bikes' brakes needed adjustment, Rob covered the transportation fees (we still haven't gotten the trail hitch bike rack that is needed for this kind of heavy e-bike) and fixed whatever was needed at no cost to us. We feel grateful and truly astonished with the level of customer service and care that we received here. We can't recommend this store highly enough for all of your bicycle needs!! read more

I really wanted to like this bike shop. Nice folks and good community vibe. I chose them to assemble a new bike for me with some unorthodox brakes. They did an ok job for $120 (the fender bolts were loose and rattled off on the second ride, the dynamo wire was wrapped loosely around the fork blade and rubbed on the wheel, but whatever). When I picked the bike up they suggested I bring it back to have special non-compressible brake housing installed to optimize performance. I was quoted $40 since I'd just paid for the assembly. When I brought it back in the price was now $80, and when I walked into the store to pick the bike up it was suddenly $120 (they were now charging me $40 for labor). I immediately took the bike for a ride to test it out, and as someone who has been an avid cyclist for 20 years I can tell you that these brakes were frankly dangerous. The stopping distance down a moderate paved hill at full squeeze was ~50 yards(!). I immediately took the bike back and they put the old parts back on. No refund offered, and when I asked for one (this was their idea, after all) they quoted me a new lower price on the housing/cables and refunded less than half the money. Bad business, but even worse is sending someone out of your shop with brakes that don't work. That should be a NEVER event at a bike shop. What if this was my kid's bike? They've lost my trust and respect. Won't be going back read more

I have ridden past this shop many times and sometimes stopped in to purchase random supplies. The shop is always well stocked and the employees friendly and helpful. So when my well ridden bike was in need of a major repair I gave Blue Heron a try. The parts were ordered, the service was scheduled and I was given a clear estimate. I am happy to say that the repairs happened on schedule and on budget. The mechanic Daniel clearly understands my bike and it now rides better ever, seriously. Daniel communicated very clearly what was done and what might need to be done in the near to medium future. I have never had a better repair experience and am thrilled to have found my go to shop for repairs. read more

Brought my bike in for just one broken spoke. "You need a new wheel" is what I got from them. Took my bike down to mike's bike and got it fixed and tuned in 40 minutes or so (no appointment!). Working perfectly as it should. Saved about 80 dollars and a full day. Wouldn't recommend this place unless you know exactly what you need/ don't need. read more

Brought my bike here for a tune up, to replace my chain and cassette, and to replace the handlebar tape wrap. Got it back, and the wrap job looked like it was performed by a 5 year old. No big deal, looks bad, but whatever. Then I took it home and rode it down Tunnel Rd from Skyline (near where we live) and THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE PAD WAS MISSING! Thankfully the rear brakes were on, but it was not a safe situation going down the hill. Brought the bike into the shop, explained what happened, and they agreed to fix it. How long? They said 15 mins. Okay. I gave them my number and said I'd be around when they were ready. Grabbed some food and returned 50 minutes later. The job was barely started. They said "Sorry, we are really busy today." I'm sorry, but YOU RETURNED ME A BIKE WITHOUT BRAKES. Shouldn't you prioritize making it right? They said it should be done in 15 more minutes... Ended up being 35 minutes. I asked for a discount on FUTURE services (not a refund for the botched job, mind you), and they said "Sorry, we gave you new brake pads at no charge." Ummm... That's because YOU LOST THE ORIGINAL BRAKE PADS! Wasted 2+ hours of my weekend on these guys. Don't make the same mistake. Sloppy and bad customer service. read more

I live near this shop. Recently I went to Nearby Big Box Store and got a bike mechanic who was kind of aloof, not sure if he was condescending (never mind that I've been riding since he was a fetus). I didn't get any answers there, so then I made the longer trip to come to Blue Heron. I've got to say that even over the phone this place gives great customer service! Very warm and friendly and willing to help. I have a standing bike, which is pretty darn new on the market and there's only one dealer in Nor Cal and the gentleman who assisted me came up with some very helpful tips about which new tires to get and how to choose handlebars and a replacement shifter. He was technically very skilled obviously, since most mechanics would wash their hands of a bike like this. He gave me great advice and I could go about 3 times as fast with little effort on the new tires. He also tried to address a couple more questions even though someone else had walked in and said that he wanted to buy a bike, and certainly he would make more money off of that than my grip issues. I would definitely shop here again. Actually until I move away, I think I'm going to switch from buying on the web to going here, since they are SO good. And it's greener not to buy online anyhow. They have an excellent selection of bikes for families with multiple options for toting kids around. I hope they're in the neighborhood for eons! read more

I would rate it 5 stars, but I haven't actually bought anything (yet) so I don't want to jump the gun quite just yet. However, I am sure if I did, it would be a great experience. I come here every so often because they have a self-serve air pump (I actually like using the compressor b/c it's faster). The first time, I had no idea how it worked--but the staff were super helpful and friendly, and even told me how to check my tires for the correct amount to fill. I've never felt pressured or out of place for not being a bike fanatic--the staff is friendly and helpful, and there's always a couple people around looking at the options and they're treated just as nicely. Today, I was just going in to quickly fill the air, and I guess the owner (I think it was him) was by the pump just chatting. Without even me saying anything, he helped me fill my tires so I didn't have to bend down and maneuver into position--and then upon noticing my chains were kind of rusty (it's been raining a lot), suggested that he clean them and proceeded to wipe them down and oil them. Free of charge, no pressure whatsoever. Just super helpful, super friendly folks. It's just the small stuff like this that makes me glad I live in a place like Berkeley/Albany. I don't have a need to purchase anything yet, but I do have a bike that needs maintenance. I know where I'm going as soon as I get a free weekend... read more

Disclaimer: I am NOT a bike aficionado. I can clean my gears and switch out tires/simple maintenance, but my terminology and materials knowledge is very basic. THE bike store to go to if you're in the area. Knowledgeable, friendly, and patient staff. The bike I'd been riding is a solid second-hand that I had for 5 years, and it was time to actually invest in something more suitable for my needs. I wanted to buy a bike and ended up having some not great experiences at a few other places due to the attitude of the staff, and did some Yelp research. I was looking for a good quality hybrid--this place DOES specialize in offering a variety of cargo bikes (and they look so cool!), but they have a great selection of other bikes, which is how I found mine. Jeremy, the senior mechanic who helped me, listened carefully to the specifications I had and selected bikes (each progressively closer to my needs as I tried them out). I did mention a general price range and he worked within it. He answered every one of my questions thoroughly and without any attitude--I ended up going with a higher end of the model that I fell in love with, but without any upselling on his behalf. I was not treated different/better for buying a bike. As I came back from testing one, I overheard Jeremy and other staff treating other customers with the same cordial attitude and frankness. I haven't smiled so much while riding a bike in a long time! Getting the right size and type with help from someone in the know makes a huge difference. Their pricing is reasonable for the quality of bike. Blue Heron is the local bike store that is furthest from my house, but it is the one I will be going back to without question. read more

I walked in with my second hand Surly Big Dummy and, even though they don't carry Surly, shop owner Rob was all "That's the older version of the frame...it's compatible with such-and-such XtraCycle cargo components". Rob will know which bar ends make better foot rests for short-legged kids on your long tail cargo bike (the bar ends aren't all angled the same). I have several favorite bike shops in this town, but where it comes to bikes that can carry stuff, Blue Heron is the place. With bonus points for being the one shop that's open at 9am on weekdays. read more

These guys are terrific. I purchased an assisted Raleigh bike a few years ago from them and have put 10,000 miles on it. Through the years they've done tune ups and adjustments to my bike that have really kept and improved it's performance. For instance, they installed calipers on both brakes to regulate the stopping power. The mechanics are right in store and are the best kind of Bike geeks. Pretty much all my gear except for bike clothes has been purchased there. These guys are honest, fair, and ready to get you on a bicycle. Calling ahead for maintenance appointments in the good weather days is recommended since they are popular. Nice area of Berkeley too. read more

That was awesome! I brought my Brompton folding bike over to see if they had a handle for it to make it easier to bring up the stairs to my apartment. Not only did they have the one i was looking for, but the owner installed it! Then they figured out why it the bike was tipping over a little like a drunk sailor when folded, and solved it right there. (well, there are smaller wheels on order for the real solution, but at least now i know that it can be solved cheaply, and help is on the way!) Great service. The bike I bought here was subsequently stolen a month later... I'm still recovering from the heartbreak... but anywho- I ended up buying a clunker off Craigslist as I needed some wheels and brought it here for a tune-up.
