This shop is a great place to visit if you are looking for a way to carry things on your bike. I called them because I was looking for Arkel panniers, and I wanted to see if they had the ones I was considering in stock. Rob talked to me for a good 20 minutes over the phone, describing the different panniers that I was considering in great detail and making recommendations based on how I told him I wanted to use the bike. I decided to go in for a better look. I ended up getting two different panniers--one for groceries and one for general use. Rob adjusted both panniers to fit snugly on my bike but also clear my heel when I'm pedaling. I'll be back the next time I need a new bag for my bike. read more

Just had a great experience at the shop earlier today and I wasn't even a paying customer. I have always noticed their shop sign for free air as I ride by on the nearby greenway. But today was the first time I was in need of some help. Due to some serious incompetence on my part I had accidentally deflated my rear tire while on an errand nearby. I walked my bike over to Blue Heron, 'fessed up to my problem, and without any hesitation one of the shop employees grabbed my bike, filled my rear tire, topped off my front tire, AND proceeded to place a small locking nut on the valve of my rear tire so that I wouldn't have refilling problems in the future. All for absolutely no charge. If that's the kind of service they provide to random cyclists who stop by I can only assume the service they provide to "real" customers is equally outstanding. Highly recommended and the next time I'm in the market for a new bike I'll be sure to stop by their shop. read more

Brought a bike in for inspection / repair after my girlfriend took a header over the handlebars this morning. The owner was very friendly, and once I arrived, he immediately set to straightening the handlebars and brakes / shifter units. He carefully examined the bike, removed the front tire / tube to make sure it was ok (there was a bump in the tire after the crash) and ended up giving it a clean bill of health, much to my relief. Cost? $10. I gave him $20 -- nice guy, cares about you and your bike, and gave just the help needed. Recommended! read more

Blue Heron Bikes is a great addition to the neighborhood. I stopped by on my commute the other day (how convenient: it's right on the Ohlone trail!), and met Robert, the owner. What's really refreshing, though, is that he was very friendly and not at all pretentious, and as an average commuting rider, I didn't feel at all uncomfortable asking him about his products and plans for the store. It was a welcome change from the attitude at many bike shops around the East Bay and San Francisco. He's very knowledgeable and already is building up a good inventory of products. He plans to focus on middle segment consumers: think lots of city/hybrid bikes, while still having some road and MTB offerings. What sets this store apart from others is its focus on Xtracycles and cargo offerings, as well as high-quality folding Bromptons. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

It is truly amazing to have this shop right around the corner from me. I've stopped in several times to ask about child carrying options, and every time, the staff and the owner, Rob, have been perfectly helpful and friendly. They have all sorts of cargo bikes and related accessories, from front loader box/bakfiets, longtails, trailers, and child seats. They have both unassisted and electric assisted options, which is excellent. They also stock non-cargo and folding bikes as well. Great selection! I appreciated the chance to test ride some cargo bikes and received no sales pressure at all--just very straightforward answers to my questions and insights on how the bikes may suit different needs. I did not end up buying a cargo bike from them, but I did use my test ride experience to purchase a used cargo bike from craigslist. The previous owner actually bought it from Blue Heron originally, and the bike even has a Blue Heron sticker on it. Honestly, I paid a similar amount for the bike as it's available at this shop new, but I am very into the concept of reuse and community resources. When I brought my bike in to buy some lights, Rob asked me about it. I think he probably recognized the bike from when it was brought in a couple weeks ago for a tuneup before the CL sale. In hindsight, it might have come off as a snub for me to bring this bike in after having test rode bikes in the shop, but Rob was nothing but kind and helpful as always. I did end up buying lights based on Rob's recommendation. I will definitely be shopping here for all my future bike repair, tuneup, and accessory needs in the future. read more

Blue Heron Bikes are the BEST! Friendly and knowledgeable, they are always there to help. They have a great selection of cargo bikes as well as standard bike frames, and tons of accessories. Rob went above and beyond to get me the bike I wanted while it was out of stock, and the complimentary tune up kept it running great past the 500th mile recently. Although I came into Blue Heron lusting after their Brompton folders, I decided to just get my regular bike tuned up. Immediately after getting it on the stand for an inspection, the mechanic noticed a small hairline fracture on the frame. My heart sank, but then leapt as he assured me that I had a lifetime warranty on the frame if I was the original owner (Raleigh). From that point on, Blue Heron took over and dealt with Raleigh, who kindly honored the warranty and shipped a new frame out. Within two days after getting the frame, they had transferred the salvageable parts off the old frame, replaced that which needed replacing, and had me on my way and the bike has never felt better. I am happy to see a lot of other 5-star reviews and I hope word keeps spreading about Blue Heron. read more

One of the best small businesses anywhere. Excellent, friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff, and they sell high-quality products at very competitive prices. I've bought two bikes from Blue Heron; A Felt cruiser, and a Breezer commute bike. Both bikes were special order. Both sales went really well. A young woman named Sonja (hope I got the spelling right, there) sold me the bikes and was super helpful with questions that I had about all of the small details of both of them. When I needed some adjustments made to the commute bike, I just brought it in, and the owner, Rob, was really helpful in advising me on the basics, made the necessary adjustments and sent me on my way. Recently, I needed to have my back fender removed. And though I could have done it myself, I am new to the mechanics of this bike and was not sure about removing the back wheel, and dealing with the chain and gears. I walked in and a young man named Jeff introduced himself and got started on removing the fender, with no wait on my part. As he was working on the bike, he decided to change some of the hardware, and go over the entire bike to make sure that everything was in working order. He found that it needed some fine tuning here and there, and he was on it, rapidly. Watching him give this bike (what turned into) a mini tune-up, was a sight. The guy knows what he's doing, bigtime. He was super-friendly, lightning fast, and efficient. And while he was doing the work, he was giving me an education about the ins and outs of why new bikes sometimes have the need for various small adjustments here and there. - When he finished with the bike, I insisted that he take payment for his time and energy. He refused, and insisted back, that "that's what we're here for." - The owner, Rob, had said the same thing when I had gone in previously. - It feels a little strange having people stand by their product and their work with such conviction as to not charge you for their time, when they fix things for you. Needless to say, I am grateful. Their level of customer service is extraordinary; a throwback to a time when high-quality customer-service in the majority of American small-businesses was the norm. They run a fantastic shop, and Bay Area is lucky to have them. - Five stars, all around. read more

This is a great shop with a great owner. He helped us convert a mountain bike to an extracycle that can now tote our 5 year old, 2 year old, and all the groceries. We're really happy with it. Subsequently I stopped by the shop for help with my son's bike - an issue with the handbrake that I couldn't figure out. Took my 15 year old bike in on Christmas eve day for a tune up and some adjustment. Always felt like I was kind of hunched over when I rode and asked if they could help. Both Chris and Rob were super helpful. I bought two Airborne bikes, a Goblin and a Hobgoblin, and assembled both myself so I was interested to have someone double check my work. The Goblin had some issues with the rear derailleur and Rob set it up perfectly. Came back with the Hobgoblin and Chris realized immediately that the rear derailleur hanger was bent. In minutes, he had trued the hanger, reassembled the bike and was setting up my suspension's sag. Answered all of my questions and were very helpful and informative. Didn't feel like someone was looking down their nose at me unlike at a local three lettered co-op ... Chris and Rob were super friendly. read more

I bought a great bike her a few months ago, one that my entire family rides on and still has space for groceries. I love the ride. At Blue Heron, they were helpful, kind, patient as we made our choice. (I looked at the Missing Link which is closer to my home. There they treated us like they were prima donna at the New York Ballet. I won't go there again.) A few months later I came back to have the bike tuned up. It rides better even. Bought an electric bike from this shop a few months ago, after test-riding several models with a friend. Information we received from a couple of the people who work here (including the owner, Rob) was useful, straightforward and honest - which was a big help in making the decision. Minor problems with the bike (not the fault of Blue Heron Bikes) necessitated bringing it back to the shop 3 times after the initial purchase. A couple of minor oversights occurred with mechanical adjustments, so one might argue that I should knock off a star on this review. However, the rock solid commitment of the shop to making things right warrants a five star review. read more

I agree with the previous reviews and don't need to repeat them. I'll add that they've been great about doing special orders for me. I wanted to get a cool lock I'd seen online but wanted to support my local shop. Blue Heron didn't have it in stock but were happy to order it for me, and called me a day or so later when it arrived. I just ordered a Spot Acme bike from them, too. It's a good fit for their shop because it's a urban commuter with disc brakes, internal gearing, & a belt drive. Low maintenance and no greasy chain! I have worked in bike shops myself as both mechanic and on the sales floor and am very impressed this the sincerity, knowledge and helpfulness I've encountered at Blue Heron. Update: the OEM headlight failed on my Raleigh Misceo Sport Ie - it was a manufacturing defect - dry solder joints. Blue Heron promptly provided a better light as a replacement, and at my request let me install it so I did not have to haul my bike to them or lose a days commuting with it. This is an excellent shop. I ride an Elliptigo Arc (a stand up bike with no seat). They replaced the original rear cassette, which was too low for my riding, with one that added two higher gears. This involved changing the shifter and rebuilding the rear wheel. Recently, they replaced both tire tubes, fixed a broken spoke, replaced the rear brake pads and adjusted the shift mechanism. The ride is smoother than when it was new. All of this was done at very reasonable prices. read more

Whilst on vacation in Berkeley I stumbled into Blue Heron Bikes...What a Gas! It's great to see a shop that caters to people who actually ride bikes to get somewhere instead of the go-fast bikes for leg-shaving roadies, or the lame comfort and family bikes offered by the big-name companies. Blue Heron's selection of city, commuter and transport bikes is a breath of fresh air. Rob, the owner is a really cool guy who seems to know an awful lot about his stuff.
