This is going on the list!…read more My normal GO TO shaved ice is Waiola when I'm in town and Matsumoto when I'm on the north shore, but looks like I'm going to the Shimazu Store when I'm on the leeward side. It all comes down to the ice. Gotta be fine melt in your mouth ice. Not chunky or gritty. And they got the good ice here. They have some other good local goodies like arare and li hing mui candies. As far as shaved ice goes, I always get the same thing: ice cream on the bottom, vanilla shaved ice, and a snow cap of condensed milk on the top. The ice cream was average quality (probably wouldn't get that again), but the syrup they used for the saved ice is so flavorful. Maybe the best syrup I've had. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

So many flavors to choose from, but luckily they make it easy and we opted for a Local Favorite: The Tropical Medley- lilikoi, mango, and guava topped with condensed milk w vanilla ice cream and homemade mochi hiding under the snow like texture shave ice. The ice is so soft and the mochi has the perfect chewy texture. Their syrups are delicious and not overly sweet. They sell a bunch of snacks in addition to the popcorn, as well as other snacks and treats like li hing candies, okoshi, and "power bars". The girl at the counter was super, sweet, and friendly. Our order came out very quickly and was made perfectly. We ordered the keiki size and it was still plenty for 3 people. Will definitely be back to try different flavors, and definitely back for the popcorn. #supportlocal

I know I've passed it many times on the way to Makaha beach and Pray for Sets. A friend had recommended this place and since we were close by, we decided to drop in. From the moment we entered, we felt like valued guests. The employees were friendly, hospitable, and were super thankful for our business. I ordered rainbow with ice cream and azuki beans. Loved the fact that they use Dave's ice cream (and not the cheap stuff that's probably not even ice cream). The ice is powdery and snow soft and melts in your mouth! The ratio of syrup to ice is just right - it was not overly sweet like some other places. Prices are also SUPER reasonable compared to other tourist places. They also sell aloha wear and accessories, making this place a one stop shop for all your local needs. Definitely make the trip to Makaha to get some delicious shaved ice then walk across the street to enjoy it on the beach.

Reasonably priced shave ice that is super soft and fine! They make it pretty quick too. However, my…read moreadvice is to just get strawberry. We tried, guava, lilikoi, pog, melon and all of them were just so-so. Only the strawberry really had flavor. My MIL said "everything tastes like nothing" when describing the other flavors. Strawberry was good though. This shave ice is solid. BUT: Don't get their ice cream. I got it on a previous visit and it was horrible. Completely melted instantly and tasted like freezer burn. They made us a new one that time and the ice cream was still melted and bad tasting.

A Mixed Experience -- I'd Recommend Sharing the Large!…read more During my trip to Oahu, I decided to stop by Island Shave Ice and Creamery to try their Hawaiian shave ice. I enjoy exploring different shave ice spots whenever I'm in Hawaii, so I was excited to give this place a try! Unfortunately, I had mixed feelings about my experience. There were a few things I appreciated, but also some things I wish had been better. Since this was my first visit, I decided to order a large. Looking back, I think that was my first mistake! Unlike some shave ice places that offer only one size, this location offers three different sizes, which is nice because you have options. However, I would definitely recommend ordering a small if you're eating by yourself. If you're planning to get a large, I think it's much better to share it with someone! My biggest disappointment was how quickly the ice started melting. Personally, I love shave ice that's finely shaved until it's soft and fluffy, almost like snow. Unfortunately, the texture here was noticeably crunchier than what I prefer. Because I ordered a large, the ice began melting before I could really enjoy the entire dessert. I felt like I had to hurry to finish it instead of taking my time and enjoying every bite. Another thing I noticed was that the mochi didn't arrive together with my shave ice. It was brought out separately a little later. I appreciated that it was freshly made, but I would have preferred having everything served together. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for either. I personally prefer the softer, snow-like texture of shave ice, and the quick melting made it difficult to fully enjoy my order. My advice for first-time visitors: Order a small if you're enjoying it alone, or consider sharing a large with someone. That way, you have a better chance of finishing it before it melts! I'm glad I gave this place a try. Sometimes visiting new places helps you discover what you enjoy and what you might do differently next time. Overall experience: 3/5
