    Food was good but why are we still doing the 22% service charge in 2026. With minimum wage rises paused and no tax on tips, this is like a 30% service charge with base priced also rising. Especially on wine, where there's no service beyond screwing a top and pouring? I asked them to remove it so I could add a more reasonable 18%. They refused.....

    Truly- one of the best meals I've ever had. They do excellent work with vegan and local ingredients. The staff are also incredibly knowledgeable and excited to tell you about dishes. The environment itself is small and intimate but make for a wonderful experience. If you can splurge, I'd highly recommend doing the wine or juice pairing. We did wine and were so happy with the flavors and stories of each bottle. I can't wait to return already!

    My boyfriend and I went to Oyster Oyster for his birthday, as I'd always wanted to try it, and he was willing. It's a small, sleek restaurant in Shaw, and we got a bit of street theatre as we looked out over 8th Street. Oyster Oyster is a vegetable-forward, largely vegan restaurant. Although they do serve oysters and honey, the tasting menu can easily be made vegan. Oyster Oyster is about sustainability and strives to be a zero-waste restaurant. The food items are largely sourced from farms in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and the menu changes seasonally, with occasional tweaks during the season. Some of their plates are made from upcycled wine bottles. At the end of service, you get a list of what foods you ate, printed on a page that you can plant. We began with a rich mushroom-garlic welcoming broth. From there, we had three small bites of a corn masa with a creamy center, a tomato with seaweed and sesame, and a lion's mane mushroom wrapped in kohlrabi. The next dish was a new potato "salad" that looked more like a potato cake with celery root, mushrooms, and potato skin vinaigrette, followed by a honeynut squash with peanut, farro, and hen of the woods mushrooms. This also came with a dome of bread and marigold butter. (Leftover bread is ground up and cooked into the next day's bread.) I wasn't a fan of the final savory dish, eggplant dumplings, but that's just me. Dessert was corn "froyo" with popped sorghum and gooseberries. And as a final treat, we got a baby fig and sesame-mushroom fudge. Since it was my boyfriend's birthday, they brought over a dish of mushroom-shaped stones for him to select as a gift. I will definitely be back, but maybe when they change their seasonal menu.

    I treated myself to a solo date at Oyster Oyster. My reservation was right at opening and was seated upon arrival. Prior to my reservation, the restaurant reached out to ask about my dietary restrictions. Oyster Oyster is mostly vegetarian, but they also serve oysters. They wanted to know if I wanted full vegetarian or to have an oyster. Food: I opted for a full vegetarian experience. It was quite delicious. I only wished I was served more mushrooms. It was about 8 courses, with each course being a few bites. Service: Service was excellent. I was sat at the kitchen counter, where I could watch the chefs make each of their courses. The servers were all friendly and knowledgeable about each course. TL;DR - Great vegetarian experience with great service. Wish there was more served mushrooms.

    A wonderful vegetarian Michelin experience that left us both full and satisfied. I was excited that my partner was able to snag a reservation at Oyster Oyster especially as we're kicking off our year with a meat-free and dry January. The restaurant recently rolled out their late winter menu exploring ferments and we were wowed by every dish. My favorites were the main course-- loved the lions mane mushroom-- and the mochi dessert. We had the kombucha to drink. Service was wonderful and personable. 10/10 experience!

    *Note: I am reviewing Oyster Oyster having attended a special tasting experience here - Trés Veg - which featured Latin American cuisine and corn. Oyster Oyster is a lovely, small restaurant in Shaw. As noted above, the menu when I went was different than their normal one, but I still feel I got a glimpse into their approach to food and service. The service was outstanding - courteous and helpful and attentive without feeling like too much. As for the food, it was fresh and clearly made with care. The welcome broth was outstanding and set the bar for the rest of the meal. The flavors were deep and well-developed, especially in the mole. I can't wait to return to try their more "traditional" menu!

    An experience you wish to relive over and over and over and over and....you get the point. There's a reason this place is being spotlighted throughout the Nation. Oyster Oyster is intentional about all things - their ingredients, their wines, their guests needs. My experience started 2 days prior to my reservation when the chef called to triple check all my allergies, walking me through the dishes. First time for that! After an incredible dinner, my experience ended with a jar full of little charm mushrooms and selecting one for good health. The littlest things go a long way, and that's something stuffy Michelin Star restaurants forget - not Oyster, Oyster!

    We had a lovely dinner last evening at Oyster Oyster and AMAZING still comes shy of our experience. The restaurant/decor is beautiful! The team from our greeting upon arriving continued with ALL the servers. Each dish we received was a delight to our palette...one delicious amazing dish after another!!! 100% recommendation!!!     An outstanding Michelin star restaurant and the ideal of what a Michelin star restaurant should be-outstanding, above-and-beyond service from the moment my friend and I arrived until we left, great ambiance, innovative food, presentation, and plating, and phenomenal food taste. Oyster Oyster changes its menu seasonally, so my friend and I had the fall menu served between late September and late December (see picture below). Highlights included the harvest salad (one of the five best salads I've ever had), the celeriac taco, the sweet potato dumplings, and the poached quince. Although expensive (everything prepaid online), Oyster Oyster was worth every dollar. I highly recommend for your next very special occasion!

    Solid three (yelp) star fine dining in DC. The kitchen demonstrates solid technique. However, front of the house fails to deliver. Service was disjointed and the sommelier particularly disappointed. Space is small and casual. For a date night go with a later seating, restaurant has a wall of windows with no curtains and is rather bright. Once we were seated, we were handed a drink menu with no explanation of the options. This was the first time my wife and I chose to split a wine pairing as we had cocktail reservations after dinner. Unfortunately the pours were consistently uneven -- my wife's glass consistently had less to the point where it became a running joke with each course. The final pour was most glaring, with both of us receiving less than half a typical serving. One of many small misses that added up to an overall mediocre experience -- it just didn't quite quench our thirst . Worth a try, but there are definitely better options nearby, especially for vegetarians and vegans.

    A fantastic experience! Such a great ambiance and friendly staff. I sat at the chef's counter and the service was a delight and personable. The meal was absolutely delicious--one of the best I've had recently. I never knew a salad, celery root or a shiitake cookie could be so flavorful. With a James Beard award and Michelin Star, Oyster Oyster is definitely worth a try.

    Our party of four dined at 5:30 on a Saturday evening, just as the restaurant opened. The ambiance was pleasant and the service efficient yet friendly. The dining area filled up pretty quickly but conversation was easy. One nice touch was that our server asked if anyone was left-handed (no one was) -- the answers would've informed how they placed the silverware. It took me a moment to wrap my head around the menu (it's vegetarian EXCEPT that an oyster (the bivalve) is included. The restaurant caters to some dietary restrictions but not all. The red meat/game/shellfish avoidances of one diner and the vegetarian diet of another were easily handled. We asked for no finishing salt for one diner and that was also complied with. This was one of the best meals I've had, ever. I say this not only because the food was not only well prepared, as you would expect in any restaurant of this caliber, because it rose to the level of alchemy, where multiple ingredients that you wouldn't have thought to put together take a dish to a new and unexpected level. I would have rated every dish a solid "A" or higher. We all especially loved the potato salad and the old/new bread. I loved the kojinut squash, with the bread dunked in it, as our server recommended. The restaurant offers four beverage pairings: juice; (alternating) wine and juice; "OyOy" wine pairing, and a high-end wine pairing. All were also "alchemical" in that they took the dish they were paired with to a new level. The restaurant aims for sustainable and zero-waste practices and local, seasonal ingredients. This approach, which is carried out systematically throughout the restaurant in all kinds of ways, is explained at https://www.oysteroysterdc.com/sustainability/ and also by the servers. I was particularly touched that for one of the courses they had sourced almost everything from a local purveyor that had recently experienced a devastating fire, in an effort to support and highlight them. When you reserve your table, you pay for the (prix fixe) meal, tax, and a 20 percent service charge. As in Europe, everything is covered, unless you want to leave a nominal tip for outstanding service. On site, you pay only for your beverages. Tax and a 20 percent charge is also added to those. The tasting menu at this time of year was $135. With hefty DC restaurant tax and the 20 percent service charge, the meal came to $175, which I thought was fair for the quantity and quality of the meal. Our beverage pairings (one wine/juice and one wine) came to an additional $200, also a pretty fair price I thought, for what we got. This is all clearly explained on the bill. The restaurant is small, probably no more than a dozen tables, seating either two or four people. If your party is larger than that, you can reserve the adjacent funky-decor "Shroom Room" for a private dining experience. In short, although this review has turned out to be pretty long, Oyster Oyster was a real treat and a memorable meal.

    What does one of the country's best new restaurants look like - a vegan Michelin-starred restaurant that sources local ingredients and has a seasonal menu. Oyster Oyster more than lived up to the accolades. The menu was creative with each dish full of interesting flavors sourced within the region. The staff was extremely friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Despite a packed restaurant, it was very clearly that the staff operated as a team ensuring you had what you need (and anticipating needed- my water was never empty and they were on the ready with my orders). I felt like I had multiple conversations with staff and was able to get their perspective on dishes - this truly added to the experience. I did not know what to expect with the food as I admittedly need to eat at more vegan-focused restaurants. I was really impressed with the flavors of each dish and how each seemed to build on the prior one. I left comfortably full while also craving more of each dish. If you want to get close to the action, I recommend bar seating as you get a firsthand look into the preparation and team making magic.

    Is there a wine list so you can order it by the glass? Or a cocktail list? Or is the full wine pairing the only option?

    they have a by the glass list, non alcholic and full wine bottle list. no cocktails

    Do I need to get some subway before I go, i.e. how many plates are part of the tasting and how full will I feel afterwards?

    The plates are on the small side but there are quite a few courses. They also do a great bread midway through- I think you will leave full- I would not eat beforehand.

    How long does the whole experience for the tasting menu normally take?

    It depends if you do the wine pairings. I did not and the whole experience was around 1.5 hours or so. I imagine it would be around 2 hours if you wanted the wine.

    Is there a bar here which we can walk-in to enjoy the food without reservation?

    Nope - all reserved tables serving a tasting menu, no a la carte

    What is the dress code?

I loved the music and the dim, chill, laid back decor really complimented the overall feel. It's definitely a spot I'd come back to especially to try out some of the food. Really dope spot.

Ddukbokgi is chewy rice cakes, gochujang, onion, and bulgogi. We thought it was only ok -- we've had better, including at Mandu in the past. Yukgaejang was a new dish for me. The menu described it as a "spicy beef stew, brisket, noodles, shiitake, bean sprouts, and egg." I expected the brisket to be sliced and recognizably brisket, but it was pulled -- it looked and tasted more like pulled pork. The dish also didn't have any noodles in it. I didn't like it. The banchan was seaweed, bean sprouts, kimchi, and cucumbers. It was okay. Service at the bar was fine.
