We had the most AMAZING meal celebrating a family reunion and birthday! We dined in the private Shroom Room with a dedicated server who was friendly and attentive. Where to even start! I've been to this restaurant a few times, and each time it is consistently exceptional. The food, service, ambiance...everything is always perfect. The creative and reuse touches are so unique and add to the restaurants overall message of focusing on local and using what is available. The way that each course reuses a prior element and yet tastes so unique and different speaks volumes about the OO authenticity. Each bite is an adventure and at the end, you're ready to begin again. What's most appreciated is that this isn't a large establishment, so you feel very seen, taken care of, and in an intimate environment. When booking you have the option of sitting at the chefs counter or at a table. I've only done the latter, but the first could be fun. My boyfriend and I went to Oyster Oyster for his birthday, as I'd always wanted to try it, and he was willing. It's a small, sleek restaurant in Shaw, and we got a bit of street theatre as we looked out over 8th Street. Oyster Oyster is a vegetable-forward, largely vegan restaurant. Although they do serve oysters and honey, the tasting menu can easily be made vegan. Oyster Oyster is about sustainability and strives to be a zero-waste restaurant. The food items are largely sourced from farms in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and the menu changes seasonally, with occasional tweaks during the season. Some of their plates are made from upcycled wine bottles. At the end of service, you get a list of what foods you ate, printed on a page that you can plant. We began with a rich mushroom-garlic welcoming broth. From there, we had three small bites of a corn masa with a creamy center, a tomato with seaweed and sesame, and a lion's mane mushroom wrapped in kohlrabi. The next dish was a new potato "salad" that looked more like a potato cake with celery root, mushrooms, and potato skin vinaigrette, followed by a honeynut squash with peanut, farro, and hen of the woods mushrooms. This also came with a dome of bread and marigold butter. (Leftover bread is ground up and cooked into the next day's bread.) I wasn't a fan of the final savory dish, eggplant dumplings, but that's just me. Dessert was corn "froyo" with popped sorghum and gooseberries. And as a final treat, we got a baby fig and sesame-mushroom fudge. Since it was my boyfriend's birthday, they brought over a dish of mushroom-shaped stones for him to select as a gift. Dining at this restaurant really felt like experiencing edible art that did good for our palates and our planet. They frame themselves as a restaurant of the future, and it's no surprise why. I appreciate and am a big fan of their dedication to locally and responsibly sourced ingredients, the level of care they give every ingredient, the engagement and knowledge of the staff, and the overall layout of the small space was very nice. Phenomenal philosophy that fell short of execution for our party of 4. The wine and juice pairings were a bit hit or miss. NA sparkling Riesling for the juice pairing was an absolute delight. Many of the wines just fell pretty flat for us, not much body, not really adding to the dishes served. Juices were overall very interesting! Again, super cool that they offer full NA pairings. The standouts were the oyster and their divine bread service with marigold vegan 'butter'. None of the courses were bad, but many of them were very interesting sounding but didn't really shock and awe us in terms of flavor - just a decent bite or two. None of us were really taken aback by any particular dish. Pay for food in advance, tight reservation windows meant we got the boot and didn't really get to chat over our final dessert/digestifs (we were offered to hang out in an adjacent to the restaurant private dining room, but we had to wait there for our table originally... so we just headed home), and the overall price point... combined with everything else just made the experience very mid overall. Definitely note that the entire menu is done in a tasting format and that you should make a reservation ahead of time. Upon entry, the staff greets you with warm smiles and welcomes you to their quaint dining space. It is an intimate setting, and everyone is there to make you feel special. The entire team ensured we were right at home and continued to throughout the whole evening. The menu is seasonal and rotates based on the local produce that they source in the DMV. Everything is primarily vegetarian and their drinks are wine, beer or juices. The dinner started with warm broth, followed by a selection of fall vegetables formatted as finger foods. The squash bite and the oyster were by far my favorites. Next we munched on their amazing home made bread with vegan butter, followed by their steak mushroom dish. It is definitely the focal point of the whole menu. We finished the evening with two lovely desserts, the small cookies being the perfect touch for the evening. I was excited that my partner was able to snag a reservation at Oyster Oyster especially as we're kicking off our year with a meat-free and dry January. Solid three (yelp) star fine dining in DC. The kitchen demonstrates solid technique. However, front of the house fails to deliver. Service was disjointed and the sommelier particularly disappointed. Space is small and casual. For a date night go with a later seating, restaurant has a wall of windows with no curtains and is rather bright. Once we were seated, we were handed a drink menu with no explanation of the options. This was the first time my wife and I chose to split a wine pairing as we had cocktail reservations after dinner. Unfortunately the pours were consistently uneven -- my wife's glass consistently had less to the point where it became a running joke with each course. The final pour was most glaring, with both of us receiving less than half a typical serving. One of many small misses that added up to an overall mediocre experience -- it just didn't quite quench our thirst . Despite a packed restaurant, it was very clearly that the staff operated as a team ensuring you had what you need (and anticipating needed- my water was never empty and they were on the ready with my orders). I felt like I had multiple conversations with staff and was able to get their perspective on dishes - this truly added to the experience. I did not know what to expect with the food as I admittedly need to eat at more vegan-focused restaurants. I was really impressed with the flavors of each dish and how each seemed to build on the prior one. I left comfortably full while also craving more of each dish. Our party of four dined at 5:30 on a Saturday evening, just as the restaurant opened. The ambiance was pleasant and the service efficient yet friendly. The dining area filled up pretty quickly but conversation was easy. One nice touch was that our server asked if anyone was left-handed (no one was) -- the answers would've informed how they placed the silverware. It took me a moment to wrap my head around the menu (it's vegetarian EXCEPT that an oyster (the bivalve) is included. The restaurant caters to some dietary restrictions but not all. The red meat/game/shellfish avoidances of one diner and the vegetarian diet of another were easily handled. We asked for no finishing salt for one diner and that was also complied with. This was one of the best meals I've had, ever. I say this not only because the food was not only well prepared, as you would expect in any restaurant of this caliber, because it rose to the level of alchemy, where multiple ingredients that you wouldn't have thought to put together take a dish to a new and unexpected level. I would have rated every dish a solid "A" or higher. We all especially loved the potato salad and the old/new bread. I loved the kojinut squash, with the bread dunked in it, as our server recommended. The restaurant offers four beverage pairings: juice; (alternating) wine and juice; "OyOy" wine pairing, and a high-end wine pairing. All were also "alchemical" in that they took the dish they were paired with to a new level. The restaurant aims for sustainable and zero-waste practices and local, seasonal ingredients. This approach, which is carried out systematically throughout the restaurant in all kinds of ways, is explained at https://www.oysteroysterdc.com/sustainability/ and also by the servers. I was particularly touched that for one of the courses they had sourced almost everything from a local purveyor that had recently experienced a devastating fire, in an effort to support and highlight them. When you reserve your table, you pay for the (prix fixe) meal, tax, and a 20 percent service charge. As in Europe, everything is covered, unless you want to leave a nominal tip for outstanding service. On site, you pay only for your beverages. Tax and a 20 percent charge is also added to those. The tasting menu at this time of year was $135. With hefty DC restaurant tax and the 20 percent service charge, the meal came to $175, which I thought was fair for the quantity and quality of the meal. Our beverage pairings (one wine/juice and one wine) came to an additional $200, also a pretty fair price I thought, for what we got. This is all clearly explained on the bill. The restaurant is small, probably no more than a dozen tables, seating either two or four people. If your party is larger than that, you can reserve the adjacent funky-decor "Shroom Room" for a private dining experience. In short, although this review has turned out to be pretty long, Oyster Oyster was a real treat and a memorable meal. read more

Those behind this incredible eatery and those who help maintain its allure obviously possess passion, integrity and a discipline for purposeful action. They mean what they say and follow through on their word. From the moment that they open, 5:30 means 5:30, not one second earlier or later, which is what the sign says if you arrive before the stated time. But once inside, that same philosophical mindset follows the next best two hours of your life you will experience on whatever date and time you get to sit and allow them to host you. Irrational obsession, something you expect from a Lao Tzu or Marcus Aurelius book, but this establishment embodies it. Everything is done intently and with purpose. Why they ask you your dominant side-- for proper/convenient tableware placement Why do they wipe the table/counter after every course-- for fresh flatware placement. Yesterday's service bread is dried, ground, blended and repurposed into fresh baked loaves for "today's" service! Dishes are made from pulverized glass bottles. The food preparation behind the open counter resembles a symphony of culinary excellence and masterful execution. If eating with our eyes filled our belly's, then five minutes in would have you reaching to loosen that belt or wish you had worn those jeggings for dinner. Words could not describe how Oyster Oyster brings the season's flavors to life course after course. Michael Markarian led me through dinner with beverage pairings like a Master Somm. But when each chef presented their respective dishes their description of ingredients and processes it is a wonderful set-up, preparing the palate for the novel experience that's about to go down; like taking the potato and butternut squash skins, reducing them to tea leaf like consistency then brewing them to create the base for the au jus. I noticed Three signs when dining at the counter, Two Michelin Star Awards and One, not so conspicuous--"Fuck Around and Find Out". A smaller space than expected so if you do show up early, you'll likely have to wait outside or take a quick walk around the block like we did. When we did come back, our table was still being prepared but that was probably the bumpiest part of the evening. A quiet and quaint little space, it was definitely cozy. They have mocktails and wine but only 2 options for beer which was a little disappointing but the wine recommended ended up being perfect for me. The food was definitely the highlight and I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful and amazing everything was. I really loved the lions mane and we were all very full by the end of the night. We were sent home with a copy of the menu and my mother in law got a little keepsake for her birthday. We have dined here twice in the past year. I prefer the winter menu to the the more recent spring visit, but both were innovative and delicious. The winter menu was a bit heartier and mushroom forward whereas the spring was much lighter. The service is not as great as anticipated for a Michelin stared restaurant. We had the same server both times and he fell a bit short. It's a very small restaurant and the ambiance is warm and welcoming. Your menu might vary, but we got dishes like: - fried celery root nest - a small bite, excellently fried, very tasty - truffled potato - tasty although pretty typical potato - beets with smoked tomato - not a very strong beet flavor (this is a good thing), very strong tomato flavor, also had an oyster in it. Excellent - kohlrabi with mushroom ragout - also excellent - beet bread with "butter" - very good, also not a strong beet flavor - confit squash and stuffed cabbage - excellent - apple spice cake - very good, although pretty sweet if you don't have a sweet tooth. I loved my experience here. I took my mom out for her birthday dinner. We are both vegetarian, so having a fine dining spot that is dedicated to that is a dream. Every single course was amazing. It's hard to say exactly where this restaurant falls on my favorites list but it's easily top 5, if not top 3. My middle name might as well be "meat" but I did not miss the meat in this meal one bit. Everything was perfect. The dishes all had excellent flavors and textures but my favorites were the celeriac, the salad with oyster, and the custard. I was also pleasantly full after the meal which I was a little unsure of going into it. We also got the wine pairing which was 5 or 6 glasses and was probably my favorite beverage pairing from any restaurant. There were some very unique wines you won't find anywhere else, and as they poured it they told you about the flavors, growing environment, and the winery. My only complaint is they don't have a phone number on their website or anywhere else. I definitely want to come back and try the other seasons' menus! read more
