Highly recommended. Excellent wine list. I had a glass of Argentina Malbec that was understated, flavorful, and had an abrupt finish. Was not a fan of the Crab Bisque. Couldn't taste the crab. Don't recommend. Shrimp Linguini was good in a light white sauce. Lastly, the Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream was my favorite. You must try it! We'll definitely return. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time and finally got to visit with my husband. The food and drinks were phenomenal. We ordered the Brown Butter Scallop Risotto and the Duck Breast. The husband is into very well done meats and was able to get past the medium rare duck breast. It was juicy and tender. Risotto was cheesy and creamy, the texture almost like mashed potatoes. I ended up only eating the scallops and leaving most of the risotto to go. Generous plates, but felt only 3 scallops in a huge plate was a bit unfair. Still a great dish though. The ambiance was intimate and romantic. There were rose petals on the table, a treasure trove of stories, cozy arm chairs, dim lighting, and smooth jazz music in the background. Overall, we will definitely come back. We come every year for our dating anniversary. 11/16/2025 we had a wonderful server, I don't remember name but she was spot on with how she checked on us and delivered our food, and drinks and was able to make a cocktail NA for me which I appreciated. We have treasured this place for a very long time, with great food and great service. The last time we went, we were disappointed. May have been a bad night for the server, even though we tipped very well as we always do, but we felt as if we were too old for the restaurant now. It seemed the other younger patrons were getting treated different than we were, even though we bought expensive wine, apps, a full meal each and dessert. I usually skip this place but the reason is because I not patient waiting in a line! But this month we went and waited merely 2 minutes while table was cleared. Then super nice hot coffee. Both waitresses circled continually their table to deliver, take orders, clean and repeat. Great food service and coffee makes for a repeat always. We went for my wife birthday and it was awesome. This place is in the original backstage of the theater that was once at this location. It's very well done with drapes, comfy chairs and romantic atmosphere. A good date night or special occasion place. It's not inexpensive and yes it's worth it for special occasions as I can't see eating her on a regular basis. The service is top notch, the menu changes and it's got a nice variety to choose from. I had the duck and it was meh. Tough, no flavor and just not good. The rest of our party had great meals and the appetizers were delicious. The drinks they made were great as well. Dessert? What a lovely date night spot! We had reservations on a weekday night and it wasn't too busy. Service was excellent and our server was very welcoming. We ordered the one starter and two entrees - the clams, braised beef short rib ragu and the chicken cacciatore. The ragu was my favorite dish from the evening. It's great they had a GF option as well. Prices were on the pricier side, so I personally would come here on occasion. But the dishes were really tasty and exquisitely made. What a lovely evening! This place is great for dates and anniversaries. Ambience is intimate and romantic. The only room for improvement was that my dining partner's chair sat a little low for the height of the table. Our server was super sweet and gave excellent recommendations. Dishes came out quickly from the kitchen, and even our beet salad was brought out by the executive chef himself. My butternut squash lasagna did not use pasta, and instead used layers of squash. It was hearty, flavorful, and delicious. Cocktails were fantastic, strong but well balanced. Although I didn't get a glass of wine, I looked at the wine list and found it to be very well thought out, with good variety to pair of their yummy dishes. To start you have to make a reservation and I believe there is a fee of $50.00 per person if you cancel less than 30 minutes before you reservation or if you just don't show up. I guess they have been burned too many times by no-shows. So be prepared. Next, this cafe is so cute and tucked away on this beautiful street. It's a very small and intimate place for a date night or to catch up with a friend. The music was amazing. Fit well with the atmosphere. We had a late lunch so we skipped the appetizers and drinks and went straight for the entree. I had the short ribs ragu pasta. Babe it was incredible. Tender slow cooked ribs, the pasta tasted fresh and the sauce was delicious. It was creamy, well seasoned but, not over powering. It was perfection. And they brought some fresh sourdough bread and butter. Hmmm mmm good! Perfect for a chilly fall evening. My hubby had the duck Breast with mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. The duck was crispy and so tender on the inside. Again, seasoned well. Just salt and pepper. Potatoes were whipped nicely. The beautiful almost Ruby red sauce was so good. This fine restaurant has really become our 'go-to' when we're in town for Tacoma's Daffodil Weekend. We are never disappointed. THE ROSES: Excellent food and the prices are reasonable for your typical fine dining restaurant. Very good service. THE THORNS: No dedicated parking, so getting a nearby parking spot on the street on a Friday or Saturday night might be a bit dicey. THE VERDICT: Over The Moon Cafe is a solid performer on the downtown Tacoma dining scene. If you like hearty food prepared very well and a good value, you won't be disappointed. We came in at 430 for a 5pm res on a Saturday night and were seated right away, looked like they had some more availability for walk-ins, too. Very cozy interior with quirky design, industrial and kind of like 90s romance but not in an old looking way. We ordered a few non-alcoholic drinks (which were delicious!) and a few starters, including the Caesar Sal (yum) and the scallop crudo (tasty passionfruit, crispy garlic, pickled Fresno peppers- like a deconstructed sriracha- really a nicely composed dish visually and culinarily.) The mains we tried were amazing as well- rich perfectly mantecatto (creamed) risotto, perfectly cooked scallops, the right amount of truffle and chive oil. The duck was perfect, crispy skin, well rendered fat beneath, with a perfect medium doneness- very tender- paired wonderfully with the cherry sauce/reduction and the rich delicious mash. I would say it seems like the seasonal veg may be batch roasted rather than cooked to order- but it was still delicious and had great texture to compliment the dish. The maitake primavera pasta was a real flavor journey in the best way- the fermented chili crisp blends perfectly with the basil and mushroom to create a unique combo that id never really encountered before- the mushroom was deep fried to be crispy on the outside but perfectly tender on the inside- permitting some really unique plating. The turtle pie was decadent but not too heavy to eat after three entrees- a lighter caramel with pecans beneath an awesome thick layer of ganache (chocolate truffle basically) - perfectly complemented by mint, whipped cream, and berry port reduction. This is not my first time at OTM and nothing has changed to make it my last. This quaint boutique style cafe focuses on detail from decor to food presentation. The small size of the two separate dining areas makes for a more quiet, intimate atmosphere. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. We started with a beautiful and delicious beet salad paired with goat cheese, followed by a delectable crab bisque. For our mains my friend had the Shrimp Linguine in white wine sauce, and I had the Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce accompanied by smashed potatoes and roasted vegetables with an artistic presentation pleasing to any gastronomic palate. What a wonderful Birthday celebration. We have dined here for years but I was hesitant when ownership changed. We found the whole experience even better than years past! Firstly, the decor has been elevated but stil holding to the Over The Moon ambience.. The staff is friendly, professional and attentive. We were wowed by the updated menu. We started with the Shrimp appetizer and the Buratta, which were both delish. Main courses of Scallop Risotto, Duck, Salmon and Short Rib. EVERYTHING was absolutely 5 star! The cocktails are made with precision and craft experience. We chose this place for our anniversary and had booked it in advance. We had been here before and liked the atmosphere. There is no parking lot in the restaurant, so it is a paid street parking lot. But it's free after 6 pm, so it might be better to make a reservation after 6 pm. The atmosphere inside the restaurant feels like a time slip to the calm old atmosphere. Our table was filled with black tablecloths and red rose petals, and it seemed like they were welcoming our anniversary. The server woman was polite and pleasant. I asked for a warm cup of tea, and my husband ordered a Mezcal Mule. I ordered a starter for Gnocchi, which was not on the menu, it was was recommended for the day. This was very delicious. And we chose Over the Moon Lasagna and Brown Butter Scallop Risotto from the specialty menu. A chef brought me two dishes. Later, the server woman said that the risotto was vegetarian, not a scallop, and later, the scallop risotto was replaced. But we liked the taste of butternut better than the scallops. The lasagna looked like something was indistinguishable. Because it's a lasagna without pasta. Unfortunately, the taste was salty for us. Finally, we wanted something sweet, so I chose Vegan dessert. We chose as a healthy choice, but I took a bite, and I felt like I should have had another sweet dessert. We want to visit here another time. read more

I first discovered this place when it was referenced in a book called "Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest". I took my then girlfriend (now wife), there sometime in the mid 2010's and we've been back about a dozen times since.....which is not enough. There is not a lot of dining square footage, but they do an exceptional job with the limited space. While you're close to other tables, you still get this sense of seclusion as the night goes on. I haven't had a bad or poorly executed entree since I've gone there. To the contrary, with each visit I struggle with the pull of wanting to try something new versus reordering that fantastic dish I had the last time. Great hidden restaurant in the Theater District. If this place were close to Pike Place Market, you'd need to call several weeks in advance to get a reservation on a Tuesday. The dim atmosphere and tight seating made the narrow space of full tables a little loud for us but I would also describe it at "cozy". We started off with the crab bisque which was good but I picked shell out of my soup a couple times which made me cautious eating it. My sister ordered the duck which she said was underwhelming and I ordered the short rib ragu that I'd give a 7/10. My partner reserved us a slot at Over the Moon Cafe for my birthday. We had arrived just on time, but they needed to find parking and so I went in at first and they immediately sat me down. The staff were completely understanding and accommodating and I didn't feel rushed at all. They even gave me a card and a fresh rose for the occasion! It truly made the ambiance all the more intimate and lovely. I ordered the duck breast while my partner ordered the shrimp linguini. We also ordered the prosciutto di parma appetizer. Our waitress was very kind, coming every now and then to check in and refill our waters. Unfortunately, they did forget that we ordered an appetizer, but apologized and actually fully comped the dish. Now that's great service! The food itself was phenomenal. The appetizer shortly arrived after our entrees and we could immediately tell how fresh the ingredients were. I particularly enjoyed the generous amount of burrata and how perfectly balanced and well-dressed the salad was. But my favorite part was the bits of pickled cantaloupe spiced with cinnamon. So phenomenal! It was my first time having duck breast and it was so tenderly cooked. I also particularly enjoyed the mashed potatoes and the reduction sauce that tied everything together. In terms of flavor profile, I loved the balance between savory and sweet in the dishes I tried. We will definitely be coming back again for a future special occasion. We celebrated my birthday at Over the Moon Cafe 1 our first visit to this wonderful, family-owned and operated delight, tucked away on Opera Alley in Tacoma. What a delightful dinner we had! The atmosphere is warm and cozy, with soft lighting and a quiet vibe, with soft background music of pop tunes from my youth. It was cute how they had a little book of birthday fortunes (which turned out to be eerily accurate) and poems. Our server was fantastic, providing efficient and friendly service. She was attentive to our needs and helpful in selecting our choices. Our water glasses were kept topped off and each course came out promptly and well-timed, without making us feel rushed. We started off with seasonal craft cocktails, which were both festive and tasty! I had the special Black Moonhattan Old Fashion made with Four Roses Bourbon, Amaro, Bitter Truth aromatic bitters & Tempus Fugit Creme de Noyaux. My husband chose the spiced rum with apple cider and he loved it. For our first course we both chose the crab bisque - and I'm glad we did! The thick, creamy soup was filled with crab meat and served piping hot (as a soup should be served). It was so flavorful and satisfying! I would go back just to have a big bowl of this soup along with the warm, crusty sourdough bread. For entrees, my husband chose the Cioppino, which had a delicious broth and was filled with delectable seafood offerings. He said it was the best cioppino he's had! I went with the Braised Short Rib Ragu, slow cooked with red wine, carrot, tomato, celery, garlic and onion, seasoned with bay leaf and thyme, finished with cream over rigatoni. The flavor was intense and there was a generous amount of the tender, flavorful short rib meat. I could eat this every day! We had intended to bring a lovely bottle of Caymus Cabernet, but left it at home, so we went with two glasses of hearty Zinfandel which paired nicely with our entrees. Since it was my birthday, we ordered dessert. I chose the Grannysmith apple bread pudding with bourbon ginger sauce and topped with lemon cream and some vanilla bourbon ice cream. This was the only course that we found underwhelming. The bread pudding was good, but the lemon cream didn't pair well - it was too tart and masked the flavor of the apples and bread pudding. This dessert would be so much better if served only with a scoop of the delicious vanilla bourbon ice cream and no lemon cream. A better sauce would be salted caramel, burnt sugar or a traditional hard sauce. Next time we will try a different dessert. Our server suggested the Turtle pie and we should have listened to her! Regardless of the disappointing sweet ending, the dinner was smashing! Such delicious, hearty food and cheerful, friendly service in a quiet, intimate setting - a perfect place for a romantic evening to celebrate a special occasion, or to satisfy your craving for a hearty, flavorful meal. read more

I asked that there be a flower on the table for a social touch, & they delivered! the food & drinks? ON POINT! the music? BANGING! They were playing all the old Soul classics. A colleague from work recommended Over The Moon and I knew I wanted to try this place because it was in my Tacoma bookmarks! Upon arrival, it's pretty dark inside the restaurant, giving it a more intimate vibe. The restaurant itself is actually pretty small too. We arrived around 5:30PM on a Friday night and beat the rush. It started to fill up quickly. I was told that the menu changes seasonally depending on the ingredients that they can source. I've posted pictures of the menu as of August 2024. They also have gluten free options, which we love to see inclusivity. I ordered the crab bisque and it was great! It was creamy and you can taste the crab bits. For my entree, I ordered the shrimp linguine. Also a creamier base, and there was a hint of something floral about it. The shrimp were big and juicy! It was a great dish and I have no complaints about it. The pricing is a little bit up there and I'm not sure it would be a regular place to go to when I'm in Tacoma, but it was a great first try. It's also hard to get reservations sometimes according to my colleague. Parking can be a little difficult when it's busy as it's located in an alleyway and only has parallel parking unless you park down the street or around McMenanims. read more
