I think I found my new coffee/bakery/hangout spot in Austin. Love the vibe and the interior of this restaurant - it's industrial like, but cozy. They also have outdoor seating if you prefer. I see a lot of people come here for breakfast or to study. Even on a weekday in the late morning there were a lot of people. They have unique European pastries and their lattes here are delicious. The staff here are so friendly and welcoming. I had their breakfast croissant, and note that the bread they use is Bavarian and there is salt sprinkled on top. It was pretty yummy. Like this place a lot, I'll be back to try other items.on their menu! read more

When all the days are done and we leave the mortal coil for the great eternity, I recommend finding the person who made this and stay near them forever. Their divinity is unquestioned. Biscuits are excellent- not the flakey things from a can, but made from scratch this morning. Sausage gravy is flavor and with an abundance of meat. The egg looks like something an artist would spend all day perfecting for a photo shoot and they just did it on the spot. And the bacon- oh lord. Thick cut, good amount of fat, and properly cooked so the bacon melts in your mouth while also being crispy. Nice ambiance, plenty of parking. Oh, the coffee was excellent. When great coffee is an afterthought, you are doing an abundance of things right. Ovenbird- say the name out loud three times so you never forget it. read more

Summary: $60 for two sandwiches and three hand pies (think fancy poptart). Neither the quality or quantity justifies the price. Discovered Ovenbird via Facebook this morning and was so excited since it's very near our house. It was part of an article about Jewish food in Austin. First thing...Ovenbird is NOT a Jewish deli. Basically, they have two sandwiches at lunch during the week: Pastrami on rye and BLT with kettle chips. We tried them both. The Pastrami was good. Normal amount of meat. Fresh pickle "wedges" on the sandwich; sliced pickles would be better. The mustard was on the verge of too strong. The rye bread reads more like wheat bread with carraway seeds. OK, but not a $20 sandwich. The BLT was NOT good. The bacon is more a pork belly cut. If you want to serve a pork belly sandwich, go ahead, but don't all it a BLT. The sandwich was on griddle toasted bread which was oily. The bacon/pork belly was smoked well, but not properly rendered to be bacon and had an off putting mouth feel. It was also assembled in a way that I brought a fork to the table with me. The bacon is stacked sideways, the tomato is in chunks and the lettuce didn't lay flat. In the end, I took about 3 bites and pushed it aside as inedible. My wife offered me half her Pastrami. The kettle chips were excellent! The Hand Pies are fun, but also pricing at ~$6 each. The place is quiet with lots of seating inside and out. Go for coffee and sweets, avoid it for lunch. read more

Saw the Reuben pic from 2yrs ago and came in but was disappointed that it is now a cold pastrami sandwich with cucumbers on seeded sliced bread, see photo. Maybe some mayonnaise with ground mustard. Chips were good and cappuccino was stellar. read more

Ovenbird simply put is Delicious!....They offer a unique menu with plenty to choose from...Our main focus was the Babka, which sadly wasn't on the menu...but was told it will return for the Christmas menu...this didn't deter us at all...we just had to have a couple hand pies "aka pop tarts "...one pumpkin and one brown sugar cinnamon...both were outstanding, the pumpkin was our favorite...along with a couple barbarian bacon breakfast tacos. The marble rye tortillas were definitely different but delicious. Their bacon game is on point and their eggs are buttery good..and who can go wrong with a couple lattes...one regular... one mocha. Ah yes. Another hip, modern, and aesthetically pleasing brunch and coffee place that I'm sure I'll be coming back to. Located in far south SoCo, it's location provided plenty of parking and easy to find. Went during weekend brunch hours and it does get busy so you might be out of luck finding somewhere indoor to sit in. But when the weather is nicer, it looks like there's plenty of out door seating. High ceiling, felt large, and just felt like a good atmosphere to talk and dine. Plenty of selections for coffee and drink that we had a hard time choosing. It looked like they have seasonal drinks so we got the strawberry matcha latte which looked beautiful and the taste to match it. Not too overly sweet and not too creamy. I definitely would like to try the other coffee option int he future as well. For our food, we got the duck fat potatoes and the breakfast sandwich which between two people satisfied our bellies enough. The potatoes weren't overly oily and the herbs added a nice kick. The sandwich was great as well. We got the sausage pesto option and the pesto helped cut through the sausage and refreshing in a way. Definitely something I'd highly recommend getting. The beverage options will definitely have me coming back when I'm needing a caffeine fix when I'm in the area. read more

Cute coffee shop about 12 minutes from the Austin airport! Very airy, work-friendly environment. I enjoyed my order (vanilla latte with oat milk, french toast) -- the use of orange sauce in the toast added a really nice punch of flavor. We also shared a chocolate babka, which was lovely! My mom got the breakfast sandwich, which had a really unique and delicious pretzel-like bread, but the sausage was too salty and she didn't get the runny egg she requested. She also didn't get a milk alternative and thought that the milk used tasted a little watery. Overall, solid coffee shop if you're in the area, but we wouldn't go out of our way to brunch here. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Ovenbird yet. There's so much to love about this quaint cafe, but most selfishly, my favorite reason is it opened so close to me. The food menu takes inspiration from all over Europe with offerings from the UK, Germany, Ukraine, or Denmark. The coffee here is solid, I generally get a flat white or a cortado. It's a great place to do some work for a few hours. They have amazing pastries that on busy days sell out rather quickly. My favorite are the hand pies (or as I like to call them, fancy pop tarts), which have a variety of flavors like passionfruit or chai. I've also had the Bierock, which is like a meat filled roll. I've also had the shakshuka taco, which is good and quite substantial. I'm also eagerly awaiting a special occasion to order a Stroopwafel Cheesecake, though I may just order it for myself one day. They're currently open only mornings and afternoons, but I did see a liquor license intent notice on the window so I believe they want to shift to beer and wine at night. read more

Overall it's good. I like the coffee. It's nice a nice quiet place for remote workers like myself during the week, the WiFi is free. The menu is insanely overpriced though. $20 for a sandwich is pretty outrageous. However they do claim everything is scratch made. I'll be back for coffee. read more

I haven't spent much time INSIDE coffee shops in a year and some change and it was so nice to break that streak with a visit to Ovenbird. Appreciated the simplicity of the menu but also that it provides a European twist on some classics. WiFi was reliable, there was inside seating and a few outdoor seating options scattered around the perimeter, some offering shade, some directly in the sun. It was supremely cold inside, so be sure to bring a sweater! I enjoyed my $9 bfast sandwich with bacon, cheddar, and shakshuka aioli a Bavarian croissant, and speaking of...the pastry case looked INSANE; I saw many folks come in and leave with boxes of them! Unfortunately I will never come back. Really wanted to like it because I like the location. Food was so bland. Potatoes in hoppel doppel and chips on side of sandwich were tasteless and terrible. We asked for salsa and ketchup for these and they did not have any. At all. In the whole restaurant. It was clear when we asked that they had been asked this many times before bc they seemed embarrassed. Food was almost inedible. The blt sandwich did not hold together even in the slightest. Fell completely apart. For a place called oven bird, I thought there would be fried chicken biscuit on the menu? The tables seemed dirty and greasy. All ordering is done on a QR code which I hate. Couldn't specify options, hard to find drinks and sides, so they are really losing money since I did not want to order more due to the system. They don't let you keep a tab open, so you'd have to place a whole new order for something else. No service at all, no one checking on you to see if you need anything. You even have to get your own Luke warm water in plastic cups. AND bus your table. AND they still ask for a tip. While charging $20 a plate for terrible food. Shame on this place. read more

South Austin has gotten both an excellent coffee shop and a brunch place with Ovenbird. They're a mix of a come in and grab (with pastries and coffee) but any of the other food items are made fresh. (Or fresh-ish). The eggs must come from a farm with loved chickens because the yolks are almost orange. I've had their French toast, Scottish eggs, homemade hand pies and another pastry I can't remember the name of. Everything I've had to eat there has been good. I am not a coffee snob, but you can tell they use high quality beans in every drink. My only con is that since they are making most of the food when you order it, if they are remotely busy it can be 10 minutes or so before you get your food. Nothing that is the end of the world, but if you're in a hurry you'll want to get a pastry instead of a breakfast sandwich. read more

I am overjoyed that Ovenbird has arrived in Southeast Austin. We are slowly but surely adding more great spots down here and this one did not disappoint. We ordered two pop tarts, both super yummy. I also got a breakfast sandwich which was absolutely delicious. The bun was a bit salty so I scraped that off of the top. Otherwise yum! And of course a vanilla latte. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. I wish I had gotten the name of the woman working the counter because she was SO incredibly kind (she had beautiful curly hair and glasses, shout out to you!). I love that we now have a coffee shop close by that is LOCAL and not a chain. We will be repeat customers for sure! read more

I mean, get in and get out McDonald's uncomfortable. That is disappointing because you have to take out a loan to eat here. It is expensive. The first thing you ll notice is the waft of nuttiness and star anise, clove, ginger etc that hits you like a ton of bricks when you enter, not that sickly sweet confection sugar aroma you're probably used to. Total Eastern European flair- think Polish, Czech, Hungarian style pastries. Several rotating items including the breakfast salad (kale, gorgeous little turnips, yam, oats, fried egg-everything worked beautifully together) with a refreshing yoghurt dressing. 2 little espresso muffins served with it. Reuben was very tasty, nice fennel flavour and a generous layer of kraut. Macchiato was phenomenal. Very cute spot with nice people & bistro tables and benches for outdoor seating. A few years ago I remember a city council member, Brewster McCracken, tout his efforts and contribution during the 90s in helping update and "beautify" the city's shopping centers. Coming from El Paso, it was odd flex, one cause I was used to ugly shopping centers and two because I didn't even know they needed to look nice... Fast forward to 2022 and observe what we now consider to be the standard and bland design for the exterior of Ovenbird. Ole Brewster would gush if you asked him (he's still around, actually). While the setting lacks character and a homely feel, the quality of the food and the people at Ovenbird made up for it. The wife had the hoppel poppel, which was a welcomed combo of flavors and textures. I'd like to give myself credit for ordering the duck fat potatoes but I didn't, but I did help myself to some. I had the breakfast sandwich, the sausage and pesto one. I guess I never thought about pesto in a breakfast context so it took me a bit to appreciate it. All that said, the execution was there on all the plates, very well done. While I hope they continue to expand their menu, because I think they will execute well on anything they add, I definitely recommend it. read more

It's okay. I love the interior and think it would be a great place to study because there's so much natural lighting, but I wish they opened later than 2pm. The only drink my friends and I ordered was the house chai latte, but it was pretty underwhelming. I wish it had less milk and more of the chai because there was a lack of flavor, but I do want to come back and try their other drinks because this place seems promising.
