We dined in tonight (Sunday evening) with 7 people in our party for my younger sisters 18th birthday. We had a reservation at 6pm but we were not sat until 6:15/6:20 because the table was "being wiped off". This was a near empty restaurant at this point, but I understand that large parties have to be mapped out, so we waited, no complaints. When we were sat our server Amber came by and introduced herself to us and offered some cocktails and beers (good featuring!) we ordered a few beers, glasses of wine and sodas and asked to start off with a blooming onion fingers (I can't remember if that's the actual name) and I got a kids macaroni for my daughter. The appetizer came out but it took nearly 20 minutes for all of us to get our bar drinks which was two beers and a glass of red and a glass of white wine. When we finally all got our drinks out, I noticed my glass of white wine had lipstick all around the rim. That's disgusting and I have no idea how it was not noticed!! I quickly checked my grandmothers glass to make sure she didn't have the same problem, and then noticed that although we had both ordered the 9oz glass, our amounts were very different, mine way less than hers, and neither of us had drank any. When Amber came back to the table, I asked her to please replace my glass, she said "ok". No apology. When she came back out to deliver the macaroni I had ordered she placed it directly in my face and I'm under the assumption she wanted me to take it from her rather than be served the dish. Again, not a big deal, except my hands were full from trying to keep things away from arms reach, she finally set it down. She took our order and asked what temperature everyone wanted their steaks cooked which we specified, and my grandmother and I both asked for our dressing on the side for our wedge salads. 5 of us got side salads with our meal, which took a very long time to come out.. by this time it's 7:30. We have been there for an hour and a half, and got long time and insufficient drinks and an appetizer. We got our salads, mine had dressing all over it. Okay, that's fine, again. I just scraped as much as I could off and didn't end up finishing it because it was soaked in ranch. When our entrees came out my grandfather's steak, which he ordered medium came out extremely charred on the outside and well done in the middle and he was told "sorry we didn't have the sauce that you wanted on top, I can get you something different" Really. My fathers steak was over cooked as well, he wanted it medium he got well done. My sister wanted medium, she got medium well. For a restaurant that has the name "Steakhouse" in it, you sure have absolutely no idea how to cook a steak. I suggest some retraining in the kitchen. My sister and dad decided to just eat their food because it had already taken a really long time and my daughter was getting grumpy, but my grandfather sent his back. They brought out a thinner steak a few minutes later (my guess was they thought it would cook quicker) but seemed to get that one wrong and cook it well done also. No manager came by the table to drop his entree off or check on the table. We are pretty irritated at this point. Since it was my sisters birthday we brought in a tres leches cake and asked to have it brought to the table so we could sing and pay and leave. The waitress dropped it off with 4 plates and said "I'll be back with more". Ok. She came back and dropped the plates off, no one sang, no candles. Finally my sister got up and asked someone to have servers come sing because our sister was turning 18, that's a pretty big deal. We had a few servers come sing. When they were done I asked Amber when she had a moment to please bring our checks, she said, "well I don't know how you want them". At this point, I am fed up. I work in the hospitality industry as a manager and graduated with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management... it's not hard to be hospitable. Amber clearly doesn't know how. Michelle, who I learned is the proprietor, does not know how as well. Outback, coming from someone in the industry, you need to step up your game. There are too many choices in the city of Houston to spend your money and you won't be open if you keep carrying yourself how you did tonight. Here are a few tips. 1. Make cleanliness a necessity. There were so many dirty tables around us and food on the floor, and the restroom was a mess with soap all on the floor, overflowing trash cans and empty paper towel dispensers. What do you think this says to your guests? 2. Michelle: if you want all the glory of being the proprietor you need to take responsibility for and be aware of where your faults are in your establishment and be relentless about fixing them and creating a different culture in your restaurant amongst your staff both front and back of house as well as your managers. Get a better training program and BE INVOLVED with your guests. Touch every table. Ask how they are. Introduce yourself. read more
