NEW Tasmanian Shrimp & Scallop Pasta & Boomerang margaritas
    Fatima A.

Outback has always been one of my favorite go-to places, but my last three experiences have made me feel otherwise. Today, I walked in and there was no host present because she was busy bussing tables. I understand being short-staffed since I once worked at Outback, but I'm just sharing my experience. The waiter was very nice, sweet, and pleasant, so the bad food wasn't her fault. so that's the only reason I'm giving it a 2 star otherwise it would most likely be one or zero for the most part. I was not impressed with the pasta, and I'm a pasta lover. It tasted like sugar and was not good at all. It only had 4 scallops, and 4 shrimp in it, which was kind of weird. The Boomerang Rita with four different margaritas, which usually comes out looking really cute as shown on the website, was a disappointment. I sent it back because it lacked any garnishes or salt on the rim, and the limes were very old and dehydrated. When they brought it back, it still wasn't right. The drinks were okay at best, but the last one tasted like a handful of salt ,there was no effort whatsoever. I probably won't be back for a while because I'm very disappointed--three strikes for me. My mom had a three-course menu, and it was pretty bad. Her baked potato was cold, her burger wasn't well done, and it was cold as well. The only thing she enjoyed was her Caesar salad. Usually, they bring you bread, but we only got one and it was never refilled.

    Host

Attempted to dine in this location on Monday night with my 3 year old... upon entry I was greeted by the hostess who said "how many".. what a nice greeting..... taken to a booth where I sat over 10 minutes before being acknowledged. After 5 minutes I asked the hostess if anyone was going to take care of us she said yes... 5 minutes later I finally see someone go to another table and then disappear again without saying anything to me..5 minutes later the same person (Yaya) comes finally to the table. I immediately order my son's food with my drink... his tenders and fries come out and as you can see in the photo... yes they tasted as bad as they look. Hard as a rock, dry, but according to Yaya they were fresh out the grease... my son loves tenders and fries....he didn't want these. I I order my appetizer wings...tried to order a salmon dish but they were out of broccoli.... I decided I would be fin with the wings...20 minutes later... those never came out, neither did our sever. In the photo the 2 people sitting down are a host and her work boyfriend, they were so entertained with their phones and each other my poor experience right behind them went unnoticed. My wings never came and as you see we left those rocks right there on the table. I'll NEVER be back to this poor establishment. They weren't even busy, literally about 6 tables in the entire building, no excuse for poor service but explains why the place was empty. Don't waste your time or money here, go pay top dollar at a top notch steakhouse.

Whew who doesn't love a good quick bite to eat for an amazing price! Outback has been a favorite "go-to" of mine for a while now and it never disappointed me. Everything from service, the seating arrangement & food are all perfect. Sometimes service can be a little of a wait but that's because everyone loves to eat here so of course you should be next.

Outback is always a decent steakhouse. My steak was tender but was overcooked. I ordered medium and got well done. Other than that everything was good. Loaded sweet potato is always one of my favorites. The margaritas were strong and sweet. I would come back to this location. Our server was attentive and helpful when we needed. It was a good meal.

I don't eat beef or pork, but after watching a review from Peaks100, I saw that the manager also recommended the seafood along with the steaks. My wife eats steak, so I took her there for that, and I planned to order seafood. Spoiler alert: my wife enjoyed her steak. Now that I got that out of the way, let me continue. https://youtu.be/5uPuX7Fk_cE?si=H7NI2vI_uMWAeREq Appetizer Octopus Ceviche -- $18 I told our server that I didn't want any pork on it. She seemed surprised and told me it didn't come with pork. I had already looked up "pancetta crumble" and knew pancetta was pork, so I showed her the menu. She then said she knew what pancetta was and would make sure there was no pork on my plate. The ceviche itself didn't have much flavor. I didn't really enjoy it, but it wasn't bad enough for me to complain or send it back. Dinner Housemade "Parkerhouse" Rolls -- $8 These came out fresh and hot with butter. They were good. No complaints. Chef's Fresh Catch -- $50 The fresh catch was grouper. The fish had some salt on it and a nice char, but the heavy cream-based sauce on the plate didn't have much flavor. Again, I didn't really enjoy it, but not enough to complain or return the dish. Jumbo Lump Crab Oscar -- $28 Wow, this was not good at all. I probably should have sent it back, but I didn't. It was tough and rubbery (see pic), almost like it had been left under the broiler too long. I took it home with me, but I honestly will probably end up throwing it away. Sides Crispy Brussels Sprouts -- $13 These were good, but somewhat oily. Yukon Gold Potato Purée -- $12 They were okay. Nothing to write home about. Dessert Coconut Cream Bread Pudding -- $14 It was just okay. The coconut flakes was too much, in my opinion, and eventually became overwhelming. It didn't feel very balanced. Overall, I felt the service could have been better, and most of the food needed more flavor, especially at this price point. Nothing was so terrible that I felt the need to ask for a manager, but I also didn't enjoy most of what I ordered. I ordered it, so I paid for it and kept it moving. Also, a 25% gratuity was already added to the bill. Maybe that is why the service was lacking, because they already knew they were going to get 25% "allegedly". Honestly, I don't think I'll be back. There are too many other good places in the DMV where you can have better food and a better overall experience for the same price or less.

After starting...saving...revising...and saving again...I think I'm finally ready to complete this…read morereview which has been in draft for a while. For decades, the most notable landmark in this section of Alexandria was the Potomac River Generating Station. However, over the past 5-10 years, this section of Alexandria has been re-branded as "Old Town North." The purchase of the former power plant site in 2020, is scheduled for massive mixed use re-development to include residential and commerical use - https://www.alexandriava.gov/neighborhood-development/potomac-river-generating-station-prgs-power-plant-redevelopment-old-town TBH, I had not really explored the Old Town North neighborhood in a while, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the wide variety of new restaurants, walkable areas, and green spaces to enjoy - https://visitalexandria.com/the-best-of/old-town-north/ A friend and I decided to grab dinner, and after perusing the options, decided upon Oak Steakhouse. Since it's 2005 founding in Charleston, SC, Oak Steakhouse has steadily expanding its national footprint with the Old Town location representing it's more Northern location. Oak definitely leans into the steakhouse ethos with a darker color palette, hardwoods, and dim lighting (at least in the evenings). There are many floor to ceiling windows, which I assume provide ample natural lighting during the lunch hours. The place was buzzing on a Friday evening, but we were luckily able to snag a coveted window table. Server arrived within a few minutes, greeted us in a friendly manner, and described the specials of the evening. We enjoyed a Port City Optimal Wit (since it's a local Alexandria brewery) and a glass of sauvignon blanc. Both were fine; served chilled as expected. We skipped appetizers and for the mains, we shared the steak frites and seared sea scallops. Slices of so-called "butcher's steak" were cooked to an appropriate medium-rare doness. Steak was good; not tough...the side of au poivre sauce was good for adding much needed additional seasoning and saltiness. Housemade fries were cooked in beef-fat and stayed crispy, even after 20-25 minutes. Scallops were just okay. The mollusks were cooked to temperature and given a quick sear on one side, so they wouldn't be mushy or rubbery in texture. They were served with fennel gonocchi, carrots, beet chips, avocado mousse, and finished off with a sherry-rum sauce. My main observation again, was the dish was underseasoned. The scallops were fine, but the sauce was too sweet and the entire dish just needed some finishing salt sprinkled on top. Our server popped by a few times to check-in, and ensured water glasses were filled. Many of my reviews will reference the monetary value during in today's economic climate, and this will be a factor here also. Here's the thing, I'm well aware that if I decide to dine out, I expect to spend money...especially at a steak house. On its Yelp page, Oak Steakhouse is marked with "$$$$," so we knew the price point before walking in. For me (as well as my dining companion), we didn't feel the overall experience at Oak was anything "special" - and I concede that everyone defines that word differently. We certainly observed the large groups gathered, as well as the smaller parties enjoying themselves throughout the night. While there might not be many options for steak houses in Old Town, I feel there are other and frankly, BETTER choices for your dining dollar. Dinner for two adults, with one glass of wine and one beer, two entrees was $135-ish with tax and tip.

Then we came back again for lunch the next day. Three visits pretty much says it all. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has such a great atmosphere, but what really stood out was the hospitality. Every person we interacted with was genuinely kind, welcoming, and attentive without being overbearing. My wife has celiac disease, and dining out while traveling can sometimes be stressful. The knowledge and care shown by the staff at Josephine immediately put us at ease. They understood cross-contamination, took it seriously, and never made her feel like an inconvenience. That alone means a lot to us. The food was excellent, the service was wonderful, and the atmosphere is hard to beat. We came to Alexandria expecting to explore a bunch of different restaurants and somehow ended up at Josephine three times. That probably says more than anything else I could write. We'll absolutely be back the next time we're in Old Town.
