Went there today for lunch because I had a taste for some shrimp ! Searched Yelp for one nearby and found this place. So I drove there and it's in the back of the mall. All the way in the back of Hybla Valley. Got there ordered a shrimp po boy and a whiting sandwich. Didn't wait long either to get my order. Oh and some hush puppies. Got home started of with the shrimp and it didn't disappoint. It was full of shrimp . And I got it spicy which added a little zing. Didn't come with lettuce or tomato though. Ordered carrry out last night for the first time. We were really excited for some good soul food and fresh cooked food. However when we got the food home it wasn't hot or very fresh tasting. The breading and chicken felt over cooked and rubbery. The shrimp breading was falling off because it was wet and soggy. The fries had the same sogginess. The Mac was the only thing legit hit but the flavor was lacking. Overcooked noodles and bland. The banana pudding was the highlight for me. Delicious. The price was reasonable for two meals and a kids me plus a few sides. The hush puppies were pretty good but nothing special. I gave 3 stars because I'd like to eat in store and try the food fresh. YIKES! Not sure what happened to this particular Skrimp Shack location, but it has drastically gone downhill in terms of the quality, taste, and the accuracy of their food offerings. Route 1 is pretty limited in tasty food options, and I remembered having a pleasant experience at Skrimp Shack a while ago; decided to come here for lunch. I ordered the Skrimp Po Boy, the 2 fish and the 2 Skrimp tacos; they didn't have the 2 out of the 3 options of how you'd like your protein to be prepared (the Buffalo Sauce and the Mango/Peach/Jalapeno Salsa), and only was offering the Po Boy Sauce version. I asked for the Spicy version of this sauce, but was given the mild version; the lettuce that was served was wilted and starting to brown; the cheese wasn't freshly grated. The sauce was also overly sickly sweet, and it just ruined both of the proteins for me. The shrimp also seemed to be smaller in size and not the typical freshly-battered and crispy morsels that Skrimp Shack is usually known for; the fish had a fishy taste to it, and it was just super bland with no seasoning. Service seemed to be a hot mess in there, even with only 2 parties waiting for the food; there's also a huge stinginess in terms of obtaining condiments with your meal, which leaves such a bad taste in your mouth. Did we all eat at the same place? These reviews are generous. Yikes! Is all that I can say about the meal that I experienced last night. My husband spent $60 on fried shrimp, fried fish, a shrimp po boy, okra, Mac n cheese, and banana pudding. The okra and banana pudding were okay I guess. Nothing to write home about. Now the main reason for my review was to discuss the macaroni and cheese! Who messes up mac?! The noodles tasted like they sat in water too long and were wayyy over cooked, and the cheese sauce or lack there of tasted like old flour. From the customer service to the piping hot food, this place is amazing. I have been to the Richmond location but was overly excited to see they had one closer to home. I ordered the lunch version of the catfish meal ( Big Cat Basket) and it was so delicious. I received 6 pieces of catfish strips and I also ordered a side of fried shrimp. I chose hush puppies as my side and I had to dance in my seat. The fish was light and fried perfectly and did not have to add any seasoning. So this is the third location I've been to and they basically taste the same, bland. I had the catfish basket, which came with one side and a small drink. I had catfish nuggets, added 4 skrimp (shrimp) for an addt'l charge and fried okra. They do cook your food fresh to order, so there is a wait time. I waited about 15-20min. I just had to try the fish. The clam chowder was delicious and had a lot going on. It even had some slight spice in it. Unfortunately all I could taste was clam but I didn't find any clams in my soup. That was a little disappointing. The greens were OK. I guess I expected more umami since this restaurant had a soul feeling to it. The greens lacked the smokiness that I love in my greens so unfortunately they fell a little flat for me. And there were unfortunately no chunks of smoked ham hock either. The haddock was delicious and perfectly done. I only wish they had put the packet of tartar sauce on top so I would've known it was there. Thinking that there was no sauce, I poured some roulade sauce on the side and ate the fish with that. The fried okra was delicious. I wish I would've gotten a double order of that instead of the greens. I do plan to go back and check out their Oyster Po Boy which is not on the menu online. I live about 12 min from SS and I never even thought about stopping there but when I left Gold's to make a Home Depot run I decided to give them a try. Both Troy and LaShawn were very nice and professional which is a big deal to me in addition to the quality/taste of the food and the dining area which was immaculate and well laid out. I decided to get "The Big Cat" which is their catfish sandwich (you can also get a platter I think) and it was the BEST store brought prepared catfish I've ever had. I had about three fillets on it IIRC and the bread was a soft large bun but it wasn't too thick and bready. Two ppl could share this MASSIVE catfish sandwich and the seasoning was on the money. The only thing I did was splashed some Texas Pete hot-sauce on it and I was good to go. I ordered a side of the collard greens which I'm just now tasting and they are also delicious but I'm not use to eating sweetened vegetables but it was perfect in a way. I'm a great home chef and I know good food when I eat it and this place serves up some good catfish and greens. I can't speak to the others because I haven't tried them yet but I will stop back in few weeks and maybe try one of the Po Boy sandwiches but only ppl from 'Nor-leans' can make that Cajun/creole food but I'll check it out nonetheless. If you are in the area, stop over there and grab The Big Cat and some greens which I'm sure you will enjoy them both. My only regret is that I didn't stop by there sooner because one of my Chinese spots (China 1) is next door and I saw SS preparing to setup shop and launch but I've landed there now and will enjoy them some more down the road.
