    Eggplant

This spot really delivers when it comes to flavor. The chive dumplings and the corn dumplings were both standouts, each bite had a great balance of filling to wrapper, with just the right mix of meat, vegetables, and delicate skin. A splash of vinegar tied everything together nicely and kept the flavors feeling bright instead of heavy. The eggplant dish was flavorful and satisfying, though the skins were a touch on the firmer side, personally, I think they could benefit from a bit more cooking time. That said, the seasoning was spot-on, and it's one of those dishes that grows on you the more you eat it. The staff were warm and attentive, taking the time to walk us through the menu and check in regularly without being overbearing. The space itself is also very accommodating, with plenty of room for strollers, wheelchairs, or just a more comfortable dining experience overall. Location-wise, it's super convenient, just a couple of blocks from the Downtown Berkeley BART Station and right near the main streets of Shattuck and University, making it an easy stop whether you're local or just passing through.

Quick and attentive service! The server gave us great recommendations based on our food restrictions and also--and you won't get this at every Chinese place--a consideration of the flavors and textures of the other items we had already ordered. This guaranteed a variety in our family-style meal as good as if we had been going to the restaurant for years, but without the trial and error that typically comes with developing that kind of ordering expertise. One appetizer, one veggie dish, one noodle dish, and one order of dumplings was enough for 3 people and leftovers besides. Good vegan options as well as for pescatarians, will definitely be going back to try more. Expected everything to be too salty, as Chinese restaurants in the US are wont to do, but sodium levels here were perfect for me. I was pleasantly surprised! I prefer my dumplings without any additional condiments but others in my party used some. The hard part will be NOT ordering everything that was so delicious again. A member of our party was in a wheelchair but they accommodated us easily. You can watch them make dumplings up front, which is fun for kids while they wait (not long) for the food to arrive.

The soup dumplings are mediocre and missing some authentic flavor; however, the noodles and side dishes are quite tasty. The service is good too. It has an upgraded hole-in-the-wall feel.

Great place to eat after work, just a block away from UC Berkeley. Soup dumplings are a must, scallion pancake and the cucumber salad were delicious as well. The beef signature wide noodles taste great, especially since everything was made in house.

Continuing my yearlong journey trying all the new hand-pulled noodle places popping up around town, I had to try this spot that just opened a few weeks ago. I'd say it's a 3.5 star restaurant that still working on operations and service. The place was full for a Friday night dinner, but no queue yet. It feels spacious as there are fewer tables than the space can probably accommodate. I'm used to Chinese restaurants packing you in like sardines :) So that's nice. For the life of me I can't recall what was in this space before but it looks lightly updated from whatever it was before. There was just 1 server working the entire dining room. So he doesn't have time to check on your table or make any small talk. He's too busy running around. On to the food, we had pork and scallion dumplings, which were my favorite thing we had. Great flavor and perfect thickness of dough. I like it thicker than what I normally find at dim sum. Also had chicken chow mein, which was also flavorful, but not a lot of chicken pieces. Also had garlic string beans. Good flavor but it tasted old/not fresh from the texture. A lot of reviews mentioned the sesame balls so had that for dessert. These were small so not too big. I liked that they were hot when delivered to the table because often times at dim sum it's room temp. Good chewy dough, but I wish there was more sweet filling. We ended up not getting noodle soup because it was a warm day, so I regret not trying it. But now I have a reason to come back to see how operations improved next time!

I was worried it might be one of those gimmicky spots with overpriced, low-quality food, but I was totally wrong. Upon entering, you can tell this is the kind of restaurant where people host weddings, birthdays, and special events. They even have private rooms you can book with karaoke! They also showcase their crabs and lobsters in tanks at the front, which looked incredibly large and fresh. Similar to another reviewer's comment, there wasn't a hostess available when we walked in, but someone came by quickly and seated us after only a couple of minutes. We were so happy to be seated right by the window, though honestly, most perimeter seats seem to have a great view. We enjoyed our meal as the sun set, and I'd highly recommend arriving or making a reservation about an hour before sunset to fully enjoy the vibe. They have a massive menu with plenty of traditional Southern-style Chinese dishes and dim sum options, so it took us about 10 minutes to finally decide what to order. I'll start with the mentaiko seafood fried rice, which was something I hadn't tried before, but I love anything mentaiko. The fried rice came out as a generous family-style portion. It wasn't bad, but I do think it could have used more seasoning - like a lot more seasoning. More mentaiko, more seafood, and stronger salty-savory flavors would have done the dish justice. As is, it's probably a good option if you're sharing with a young child. The crab crystal dumplings were a nice step up from traditional har gow, which I enjoyed. The salt and pepper fried tofu was exactly what I was hoping for: crunchy and salty on the outside, light on the inside, and not too filling. The squid and green beans from the specials menu were a bit of a gamble, but they turned out delicious. I'd definitely order that dish again. We also noticed they have a weekly specials menu that changes every day, and we're already planning to come back--specifically on Thursday because that menu looks delicious. Overall, Hong Kong East Ocean exceeded my expectations. The ambience and view were breathtaking, the service was efficient, and the food was delicious. I know some people mentioned the pricing being high, but I actually thought it was very reasonable for what it is. Compared to Chinese restaurants in downtown Berkeley, you're paying about the same, but the food is better and the view is unmatched.

It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

We ordered soup and a couple of different dim sum from their menu. I was kinda expecting some microwaved stuff. To my surprised, it was freshly steamed. Food was great and I learned the owner was a chef in a dim sum restaurant in the south bay before and makes it all himself. I can't rate any of the other things on the menu, haven't tried it.
