My ridiculed latte and cold coffee cake :(
Jerry S.

Oui Presse makes good coffee and the food is above average, depending on who is preparing it. The issue is with the service and inconsistency. The final time I tried this shop, I politely asked for a half oatmilk half whole milk latte and got a glare, an eye roll, and a glance at the other barista who raised her shoulders condescendingly. Okay, I get it, my order was a bit out of the ordinary but that's what I like and it's very easy to make, and much less demanding than half the orders I hear people make. I don't need an attitude when I'm making an order, talk your smack behind my back if you must. As for the food, the poached eggs and toast is nice and the coffee cake is excellent, so long as it's heated up properly. Last time I tried it, the rude dude tried serving it cold. When I asked for it to be heated, he grumbled, heated it for a couple minutes in the oven and it was still cold. So I sat and drank my silly half oat milk latte and my cold coffee cake as I bid au revoir to Oui Presse forever.

Great place no complaints. Food was amazing! I loved the soup. Service was great, no complaints. Perfect place to visit.

Baguette with jam and butter - delicious
Monica S.

Recommended this spot by our AirBnB host. Cappuccino was tasty - thick classic "old school" foam, not microfoam. The baguette and jam was a delight - super fresh, springy croissant with nice shattering crust, quality butter, delicious boysenberry jam. Big enough to share (if you're feeling generous).

Great little shop in SE - reasonable prices and nice ambiance. The staff was friendly and espresso was fresh and tasty!!

Bortolli bean soup with bread, espresso, coffee cake

I've made it a goal to visit all the hip coffee shops while Im living in Portland. There are so many it took me over a year to get around to trying this. I will come back here for the delicious soup but it wont make it into my rotation due to the uncomfortable seating. ATMOSPHERE: when visiting coffee shops I usually ask the following questions: is the coffee good, is this a good environment for studying, will this place make a cute date spot? I wouldnt linger here because of how uncomfortable the chairs are. Not only are they hard metal but the sides dug painfully into my hips. Im an average sized woman (14/16) and had to perch at the edge of the chairs to sit at the table. CLEANLINESS: the tables were dirty. the bathroom was clean (but very cold!!). SERVICE: the barista wasnt particularly warm or friendly to me. I wouldnt describe my experience as bad, just not welcoming. Other customers came in and she was noticeably different with them. Maybe they were regulars? 2/5 FOOD: I got 2 espresso shots, hazelnut coffee cake, and the soup of the day. The coffee cake is mid. Go to Costello's Travel Cafe if you want bomb coffee cake. 2/5 The coffee was nice. 5/5 The soup of the day was borlotti bean with tomato and collards. This soup was actually quite delicious and redeemed this cafe. It came with a baguette and butter, which tasted high quality. 5/5 PRICE: prices are average. ACCESSIBILITY: the bathroom is not ADA compliant. It has a bar but cannot fit a wheelchair or walker. As the cafe is right on Hawthorne Im pretty sure there is a bus stop nearby. Lights werent too bright, and music was at a moderate volume. PARKING: I took a taxi here, but it looks like street parking is plentiful.

Granola!
Luke S.

Their granola was good. I feel like I should say more than that. So many things are "good". People, days, poops, and definitely Oui Presse's granola. I'm pretty sure the poop I had after this granola was good too. Everything just pushed through so easily! I'd appreciate if more food reviewers talked about how their food affected their bowels. I'd think twice about a place's famous mac n cheese if it's going to be an ordeal on the toilet later. Anyway, I'd definitely go back to this place for the granola.

Super friendly staff and fantastic atmosphere! This place has a ton of potential and I'm eager to try it out sometime in the future. Stopped by here for a super quick tea (THEY HAVE PG TIPS!!!) and coffee cake to go. I was impressed by the menu and for sure need to try out a few more items on the menu. The coffee cake tasted a little off to me, not super sweet/too much baking power? I'm frustrated that I can't give more specific feedback. I'm wondering if this batch was a little bit wonky due to the crazy heat we've had the past couple days. So many people give the coffee cake high marks, so I'm more than willing to give this place another try! When I do, I'll gladly update this review! Worth a visit, maybe avoid the coffee cake on hot days?

Wow the use of real butter here is Devine. Elevates a good piece of bread to magic. Had the chocolate chip cookie right out of the oven. C'est magnificent. Had a hearty bowl of lentil soup, egg on toast-with a dollup of great butter; and breakfast sandwich. Great all around

I love this little coffee shop, and they make the best hot mocha I've found in Portland this far. Everyone who works there is also so kind and service is quick. The shop is adorable with vintage decor! Their treats are also great- pb and j royale and their coffee cake is a must try! Reminds me of my grandmas coffee cake.

The food here is very high quality and the beverages are great. I'm always surprised that this place is not more crowded.

I've been here quite a few times and have really enjoyed the Aribic People's latte with its strong cardamon overtones, the Chocolate Jesus and today, the Mucho Calliente, which promises a chili infusion, and cinnamon infused espresso with dark chocolate! But wait..., oh no, I forgot to ask for oat... this is probably (certainly) dairy. Argh! Sorry, I have no Viking blood and can not digest cow milk. I would rather battle the aforementioned Viking before I'd endure the results of ... dairy! So, I brought my drink up fully prepared to pay for another and everyone there, EVERYONE, in almost unison, refused to take my payment. They kindly and quickly made another and... oh... spicy indeed, but chocolatey and balanced! One of the best spicy mochas I've had anywhere ... and I am an absolute Spella snob and proud of it! Inside secret: Don't miss out on the great selection of truly authentic Egyptian foods and pastries, as well as some really nice necklaces and earrings. If you need that piece to pull your whole Nefertiti look together before going out for a Saturday of dancing and fun... this is your hidden gem!

His hospitality set the tone for the whole evening--warm, relaxed, and full of conversation between people from all over the world. One of the highlights was watching Joe prepare traditional Egyptian coffee over hot sand, a centuries-old method that slowly heats the coffee and brings out deep, rich flavors. But the real comfort of the night came in the form of Egyptian Sahlab. Imagine a thick, creamy winter drink made from warm milk, gently sweetened and flavored with vanilla and orange blossom water. Those of you who tried it know what I am talking about! It was very nice to get a beautiful taste of Egyptian culture right here on Hawthorne. Huge thanks to Joe for the incredible hospitality and for sharing these traditions with us. I hope they expand to include a full Egyptian, Mediterranean food menu.

overall: 3.5/5 drink: 3/5…read moreservice 4/5 ambiance: 4/5 it's been a few months since I first tried Golden Hour Coffee, and I am thinking about going back to try other drinks. I got the seasonal peppermint mocha drink- all the flavors were very light and not too sweet which I appreciated. I only wished that there was stronger coffee taste (my preference), as it tasted like a warm milk drink with a hint of peppermint and dash of bitterness from the coffee. I do wonder how their drinks will taste iced so I do plan on coming back! I arrived with my party of 2 just before a small line formed, and ordered my seasonal drink and a drip coffee. there were 2 baristas at the time, but after we ordered one of them left(?) and only one barista remained to take orders and make drinks. it was busy and as a barista myself I understand so I didn't mind the longer wait and understood that they forgot the drip coffee we ordered due to the small rush. Upon reminding them after the customers behind us were served, the barista was super apologetic and made the drip coffee immediately. However, the coffee was lukewarm and didn't have a strong coffee taste either (according to my friend). Overall a cute little cafe on Hawthorne, but I wouldn't drive out of my way for their coffee. I would be willing to give this place another shot if I was in the area, as their other seasonal drinks look yummy!

The two-tops are fairly snug together so it can feel like you're eavesdropping or being listened to. There's counter seating along one side which had some refreshing morning sun- when a couple seats opened up there, we moved and were very comfy. There are a couple of cozy chairs in the front window and some additional counter and lounge seating in an adjoining room. The drink quality and presentation were high quality and delicious. The cost of a 12oz latte ($7) with no special milk was higher than other cafes I've been to recently around Portland including places that create their own syrups for specialty drinks of the month. That said, I don't begrudge the cost of a masterfully hand-crafted, drinkable cup of art and that is exactly what I received. I think the cost stuck in my head because the welcome did not feel particularly warm at the register. They were having an animated conversation with the barista and I couldn't help but feel like we were inconveniencing them by saying good morning and trying to order. When we picked up our orders, the barista was warm and friendly. Overall, it's a delightful spot in an equally lovely neighborhood.
