We came off a cruise ship to walk around Florence, Italy. We visited Florence before so decided to do something on our own and get lost in Italy :) We stumbled to Osteria Pepo while looking for somewhere to grab lunch before shopping. We were greeted quickly and was seated immediately. I wasn't too hungry so I ordered the meatballs and it was delicious! The meatballs in tomato sauce and probably the best tasty meatballs I ever had. My husband ordered their special pasta dish. I do not recall the name of the dish. The noodles look and tasted fresh and the protein really made the dish so cozy and comfortable. Of course we ordered the house wine with lunch. The restaurant was so inviting and we felt so comfortable dining at Osteria Pepo. The waiter was so nice as we were looking for the best negroni in Florence. We made a quick same-day reservation and were immediately seated upon arrival. After eating there, I was extremely happy since they remained full for the entire duration of our meal! The amhpostphere was very romantic, with the candles and small amount of tables. The complementary bread they gave us was good, but dry since they didn't give up small plates and olive oil plus balsamic vinegar until asking. The food we had was stellar, pictured is the gnocchi and sliced beef (highlighted red on their menu meaning most popular). They were super delicious, and we had this with their house wine that paired nicely. Prices were also all reasonable considering the quality and area we were in, 10/10 would go again when in Florence! read more

It was just our second night in Italy, but I had to have some meatballs. Their appetizer of meatballs in tomato sauce was the best meatballs ever. And as a fan of the meatball sub, I've eaten a lot of meatballs in my time. This restaurant was excellent. More locals than tourists which is always a good sign. Food was delicious. Our first dinner in Florence (and Italy!) reccommended to us by our AirBnb host. We had no problem getting a table without a reservation, but the space did seem to fill in while we were there. We spent around 2 hours at dinner, and never felt rushed or pushed along. We learned European dining seems to go at a slower pace, and didn't have staff constantly checking in on us or pressuring us to pay and leave. Started with bread and an antipasti of meats and cheeses. It was a good, small assortment. For mains, we only each did a pasta course. I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli with a butter and sage sauce. My husband went for the lasagna. My ravioli was delicious; the portion was perfect for me and well seasoned. The lasagna was huge - lots of layers and a generous slice. The sauce and seasoning were different when compared to "American" style (what we're used to) but still very good. The sauce was almost creamier, and less cheesy than what my husband is used to (but he's very partial to cheese). Rounded our meal with tiramisu. We shared one as we were fairly full from our meal, but couldn't resist not trying it with this being our first meal in the country. read more

The welcome dinner for our alumni trip was held here, and the food was great! I didn't have my phone with me to check in and take photos, thanks to an Italian pickpocket. :-( Because we didn't have menus (everything was prearranged), and the courses are served in a different order from the USA, I may not correctly identify everything we ate. Everything was served with wine and water. We began with an antipasto course of bread and olive oil, followed with a tray of bruschetta and meats. The primi piatti was the Lasagne fatte in casa, which was the BEST lasagna I've ever eaten! A soup which might be Pappa al pomodoro was served for the secondi piatti. It had vegetables and what appeared to be pieces of bread, and was quite tasty. For dessert we had the Biscotti e Vin Santo and Torta al ciocollato. Our hotel staff recommended this restaurant and it was a great recommendation. We began with an appetizer of Parma ham, fried bread (sounds awful, but is really good) and a white dipping sauce. I enjoyed a pork dish with potatoes. The place was very busy, but the staff was attentive. They even provided us with a glass of prosecco while they set up our table. For dessert we had Cantucci (biscotti) that you dip in Santo wine. It is another treat from Tuscany that I will enjoy again Second visit - the chicken cacciatore is another winner! After three days of being in Florence and looking for good food we finally came to Pepo. We did not have a reservation and it was Saturday night however they did take us for a table of two and what a pleasant surprise. All the food was excellent and came very quickly. The service was great and we can't say enough good things about it. There is a line around the streets for other restaurants but if you want really good food you need to go there. The wine was excellent and a very reasonable price. Highly recommend it read more

The pumpkin soup was very bland and when I asked for a glass of wine ( they only had one type ) they got visibly mad . I ran out of wine pretty soon and was going to order another , but they never came back to ask if we wanted anything so I ate the rest of my al with nothing to drink at all . We got the stewed beefy , which normally comes with veggies , but it was just beef . The gnocchi was over salted . They have a good review on trip advisor , but not sure why . read more

Tourist place. Service is quite bored and uninterested. Uses only very short sentences and one doesn't feel welcome. We received bread and olive oil (no balsamico) before the first course was served, but strangely enough no plate to put the olive oil on. Food portions were smaller than other restaurants I visited. Wifi, but slow. Only one (dirty) toilet for men and women. Only two open wines (wine by the glass). That is not much for an osteria. Also, one of our glasses had lots of scratches (old) on it. No background music. But probably better cause the place was very noisy from all the guests speaking. Large tables, but quite close to other tables and uncomfortable seats. Food tasted very good. 0.75 liter mineral water only 2 euro. No 'coperto' charge (=fixed charge per person for eating in). read more

The pasta was good but the beef was the superstar of the meal. If you are good with red meat I highly recommend. Also fyi lower your expectations on the bread at the place. A place with a simple menu, low prices, no cover charge and fantastic food. Good place to come with good atmosphere and if you're not in the kood for the atmospheric flare as Za Za next door. We ordered a beef stew, a pork with truffle sauce and a pasta with wild board sauce. None of these choices will go wrong. My first bite was to the pork and it was so goood! Pork is soft, tender and the sauce was really good. As with most Italian dishes, it gets a little on the salty side after a while but the truffle was just the right amount, not over powering. Truly outstanding! The wild boar sauce tastes much like a bolognese sauce but it was still good. Pasta is freshly made and doesn't stick together. Sauce had just the right consistency. Beef stew at 11 euros is another stunner. Many people liked the fried bread that comes with it. It is slightly sweet. Just wished that the stew or pork had some side vegetables to it, cause we find we had too much protein! This place is truly a local hideout. After 1pm, the place gets packed!! I enjoy eating at places with more locals than tourists because the money you pay is more value and the food more local and authentic. Can't wait to try their other Tuscan dishes. Even before we arrived in Florence, one of my cousins had told us she wanted to try Peposo (Peppered Touscan Beef Stew) so we finally appeased her on the last night when we came to this gem. Hidden away on a smaller street not far from larger restaurants such as Za Za and Mario, Osteria Pepo definitely can hold it own simply through the food. We started off with the Spaghetti with Boar Sauce and the waitress recommended mushroom fries from their special board. I didn't think the spaghetti was anything special but my cousin enjoyed it immensely so I didn't take a star away. I'd skip on the portobello fries though. €8 for a fairly small plate and there just wasn't any flavor. Now to the reason why I gave this place 5 stars. When the Peposo came it was fantastic. The beef literally melted in my mouth and had such a full flavor. The 1kg steak frightened me at first cause it was a little more red then I would have liked but the once I took a bite all my reservations went straight out the window. While the meat was delicious to say the least the winner was definitely the LASAGNA. It's homemade and the best lasagna I have ever had. I'm not exaggerating. It was THE BEST lasagna I have EVER had. If we had one more day I would come back just for the lasagna. We topped it all off with the Panna Cotta which was pretty good as well. If you're looking for more of a smaller more quiet restaurant with fantastic food, Osteria Pepo is the place for you. read more

Where to start with everything there is to love about this place... How about the Prosecco they kept bringing us while we waited outside for a table.. A+ Once a loud table of Americans left and the Italian crowd moved in, it felt like we were in someone's home as a guest. Our waitress spoke great English and had fun speaking Italian with my daughter as she did her best ordering and conversing in Italian. The Anchovies, oh yeah! Beef pasta! And the best homemade lasagne (see photo). The Vegan in our party was overjoyed as well with the fresh veggies (porchini mushrooms in season) and the wine was delicious as well. We've eaten here multiple times last year and it was one of our most favorite restaurants. We asked the wait staff to order for us and were never disappointed. Numerous times they picked out dishes from their featured menu on they're chalk board. We booked our airbnb close to them this time excited that we would be able to frequent one of our favorite restaurants. We were surprised and heart broken this time around and will not come back. We asked our waitress (who was not there last year so she might have been newish) to order for us and she threw her hands up and looked unhappy with us. She had a more experienced wait staff to help us. She recommended the same dishes that we ordered which we liked and that manny had great comments about. We asked for some different dishes so we can try something new. That was a mistake. I think had we stuck to whatever they recommend to everyone and to us before, we would have had the same great experience. She ordered the pasta with clam. There were small clams but no flavor. Probably because it was over salted. Firenze dishes are known to be not as salty so the flavors of the ingredients could be appreciated. We are Americans and like salt. This dish was so salty that we didn't could not digest it. We ordered a traditional boiled meat dish that was recommended to us. It came with a separate dish of condiment of mayonnaise, parsley in olive oil, and some other condiment. The meat dish literally was just boiled. It consist of cow tongue, brisket (?) And chicken thigh. No flavor. We ordered a salad and that was perfect. We wereso disappointed with the meal that we asked our food to be packed. I have been on a streak lately with great restaurants. Stopped here for a late dinner (9:30pm) after my first choice was booked solid today and for the next three days. Upon arrival the wait staff handed me a glass of prosecco. I got there 15 minutes early and my table was quite not ready. Once seated I found out that one of the daily specials was sold out. But it was not something I wanted anyway. The restaurant advertises Tuscan specialities. I ordered the fried bread with creme fraiche (a cross between yoghurt and sour cream but less sour) and prosciutto. What a delight, I had never had fried bread before. The combination of the raw ham, cream and bread was delicious. As a main course I had the pepper beef stew. It was prepared with black peppercorns and excellent. Tender and spicy. My side was cannelli beans and rosemary potatoes. The potatoes were my least favorite item but still good. As my desert I had the typical Tuscan dish of Cantucci (Tuscan almond cookies) that look just like what we call biscotti and a glass of Santo wine. The wine is sweet and you dunk the cookies in it to add flavor and soften them. What a treat. read more

Tourist trap. Don't go. The male waitress is a LIAR!! We went to eat florentine steaks on Friday night (July 7, 2017) and the waiter cut me off while I was ordering and said "we only have 4 kilo steaks for large groups". I asked if they have a 2 kilo steak but he absolutely insisted they only have 4 kilo steaks. So I got a lasagne and rizotto and beef stew instead. They were all gross but that's besides the point. We learned that they did have 1.4 kilo steaks and smaller steaks and the male waiter was a complete liar!!! A blonde short haired waitress who was truthful helped us out and attempted to cancel our order and change it but it was too late. Don't go. A lovely little find recommended by our AirBnB host. It's got the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere that makes any dining experience a treat, and it very reasonably priced. I had Gorgonzola gnocchi, which was a little heavy but quite tasty, while my husband had the wild boar ragu over tagliatelle, which he said was amazing. For dessert, you must try the panna cotta, which is delicate, sweet, and the perfect end to a tasty meal. We've stayed in Florence for 4 nights, and this has absolutely been my favorite restaurant. Welcome proseccos and a bottle of house wine for 10€ (we chose the Cabernet over the Chianti, and it was very good -- more sweet than we've had while here). To start, we had the lasagna -- SO DELICIOUS. Every bite was heaven. It was the best lasagna I've ever had. 10€. Then we had the peposa (11€) with a side of roasted potatoes (5€). It was soooooo good. The beef was very tender and so flavorful. For dessert, we had the pana cotta with berries (can't remember how much). The pana cotta itself was very good/creamy, but my girlfriend wasn't as excited about the berry sauce (a little too sweet for her). I have more of a sweet tooth, so it wasn't a problem for me. Overall, would definitely recommend this place. The food was amazing, and waitresses were very nice/attentive. read more

A colleague and I spent 100 euros here and it was hard to do given the reasonable prices - we had great wine, pumpkin soup, 1.5 kg of amazing steak (porterhouse), two sides (potatoes and beans- not to be missed). We went looking for somewhere to eat that wasn't going to cost another €160. Looked on yelp and found this place. We got there and the wind chime for a door bell caught us if guard and we felt a little center of attention walking in. Once in this was clearly a nicer establishment than many of the touristy places we'd gone to. The waitresses were great and attentive, the food was excellent! My wife got their lasagna which was excellent and I got their stewed beef with roasted potatoes which was also excellent! We both had deserts as well which were really good. And it was one of the least expensive full meals we'd had since we'd gotten to Italy. Liked it so well we're heading there again for dinner right now! read more

I'm sorry but I cannot give this place as good a review as others. This is my third night in Florence, and the food was my least favorite - not bad but ...meh! Admittedly, I paid almost twice as much for the other meals, but I got seafood one time and Bistecca alla Florentine the other, for which you would expect to pay more. Also this place calls itself "home cooking" so I should not expect anything but a good value everyday meal - which is what it was. However, I had higher expectations based on the fact that the hotel desk person said this was his favorite place. I got the house red wine (as I normally always get in Italy), which was an overly sweet Chianti, that I often get in the US and hate. Having come to Tuscany, I can now appreciate a good Chianti - this was not it. They have an extensive wine list on a chalk board - I recommend one of those over the house wine. I got the grilled pork with truffle sauce, which was good, but nothing memorable. It could have been a plain mushroom sauce and I would not have noticed the difference. Good, but no "wow" factor. I did not get a chance to see the other reviews first, so perhaps the ossi bucci, or peposo are much better. I also got the grilled vegetables, which I always get with every dinner. It was my least favorite version. I think they used a mandolin to slice the vegetables, because they were so thin and so very few of them. Flavor was OK. BTW, I never got any complimentary Prosecco as other reviewers have indicated they got. I also agree with other reviewers, the bread was ordinary and not hot/fresh. I was not unhappy with the meal, it just was not as good as other dinners I have had here in Firenze so far. It was a good value for an everyday meal. However, have not intention to returning on this trip, as I might with the other two restaurants read more
