Pesto pasta
Lindsay C.

Thoroughly enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service! My family and I went for an (Italian) early dinner with reservations for 6:30 and was one of the only people in the restaurant at the time of arrival. we got 4 dishes to share, a Pesto Pasta, a grilled chicken with both thigh and breast with a side salad, cheese raviolis with tomato sauce and a veal osso bucco with potatoes. We were worried that the chicken would come out dry but were pleasantly surprised that both the thigh and breast were moist. All the dishes were great with good portions.

Kind eyes watching over us while we ate.

Trattoria Marione was without a doubt our finest dinner in Florence. This may be a bold statement, but this unassuming neighborhood trattoria outdid well known, Michelin-mentioned restaurants. The seating for 2 (no reservation required) in the front room was still cozy. The crostini -- one with tomato, the other with a divine mushroom pâté -- and the pecorino with honey & fruit mustard were incredible appetizers. The first courses of mushroom risotto and cacio e pepe did not disappoint. Second courses of roast pork & eggplant Parmesan were top notch. A shared dessert of tiramisu & a "present" of limoncello (probably because I tipped like an American!) finished an incredible evening. On any future visit to Florence, Trattoria Marione will be where I return.

Florentine steak (not t bone)
Angie Y.

A very old school, traditional no frills joint that serves up the famous classic Florentine steak. Steaks are all served up by the gram and you can opt for a ribeye cut or tbone. You have no control over how large the portion is but it ranges from $35 to $130 based on the cut. All steaks are served rare -- they do not allow you to adjust the temperature. Limited menu and side options such as just a handful of pasta dishes and other main courses. I would not come here if it's not to enjoy a steak. Relative to other places that serve Florentine steak this spot is very affordable and humble. This is not a spot to come out for a romantic dinner as the ambience is more similar to dining in somebody's older home. There is free wine outside to sip on as you wait.

My friend from Florence recommended this restaurant to me and it appeared that other tourists also got the same recommendation. Their Florentine steak was the best that we had during our entire visit to Florence. They do it so well. We also tried fish, lasagna and salad. We ordered a bottle of wine to go with our meal. There is also a menu of specials written on the board. They were very patient with us as tourists and the bathroom downstairs is clean. I highly recommend coming here and coming early (we were here for lunch) because it will get crowded.

Florentine Steak (served rare only)

First rule of eating Florentine Steak. It comes rare so don't ask for it to be cooked any other way. Second rule of eating Florentine Steak. Even if you don't normally eat your steaks rare, do what the Romans do and go with the flow. My sister and one of my nephews don't like it rare but they tried it and loved it. Super popular spot for Florentine Steak. Since we didn't make any reservations, we arrived when it opened for dinner and were seated right away. There is an upstairs and downstairs. Service was outstanding from start to finish. As busy as they were, our waiter was patient in explaining that we should order in kilos. Our mouths were watering with anticipation. That first bite was everything and more. Why can't we have this back home?? Order a pasta or two to go along with your steak. As I am writing this review, I'm salivating. We got to visit two places for Florentine steak in Florence and we all thought this was better than the other one. We also ordered a plate of Salami and Pastrami. OMG, best salami ever and I'm not even a huge fan of salami. It's just different from the ones I have had all my life back in the states. A must visit on your trip to Italy.

Our delicious dinner must have the Florentine steak

Our taxi driver recommended this restaurant to have a traditional Florentine style steak. It was absolutely delicious! We also had the homemade lasagna which was amazing. The place was very busy but we got seated within 20 minutes. We sat right next to the kitchen so you can see the chefs moving and shaking which was very cool to watch. I highly recommend going here if you want to eat with the locals

Risotto

The place gets crowded for dinner and we were lucky to get seated downstairs (yes it has more below the street level). We ordered risotto, tortellini, ossubuco and tiramisu for dessert. Except risotto being on the salty side, all other dishes are simple and tasty. Tiramisu is one of the best we have ever tried and I almost wanted a second plate. That evening we happened to be dining with a large group of people so it got loud in a smaller underground space. And there were a few fruit flies kept attacking our wine so we were constantly paying attention to our glass which is a bit annoying.

Wild boar Cinghiale 100/10 good wine great atmosphere and it was the best pasta dish of my trip through Florence

Beautiful traditional establishment

We found Trattoria Za Za, but could not get reservations. We showed up with 60 people waiting in line like us. The line moved quickly and we were seated in a glass enclosure with nice views. The menu is vast and the food flying out of the kitchen looked amazing. An appetizer of lightly battered squash blossoms was unique and enjoyed by all. Our first choice was the green peppercorns and Cognac cream covering a steak with rosemary potatoes. This was the best dishes of our 17 day excursion. The steak was perfect while the sauce was incredibly delicious. The steak with argula salad was our second choice. It was also savory and highly recommended. The setting here is great, amazing food, good value and a truly relaxed environment. If you are in Florence, please treat yourself to a fine meal at Trattoria Za Za for that special evening. To the establishment, great restaurant and we will return. Congrats on a beautiful evening.

Osteria del Cinghiale quickly popped up on my radar, so I asked the concierge at our hotel to make us a reservation. It's clearly a very popular spot--when we arrived, there was already a line up at the door. The Mr. had the sirloin strip steak with roasted potatoes. I had the beef filet with Chianti sauce as well as roasted potatoes. Our steaks were cooked to a perfect medium rare and the potatoes were so satisfying. We shared an order of grilled vegetables and had a carafe of the house red which we enjoyed. In fact, we loved everything about our experience. The food, the vibe, the service was all amazing! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu and the strawberries with mascarpone cream. The tiramisu was the best we've ever tasted anywhere. I went to the internet for the best Florentine steak and Trattoria Mario consistently popped up as highly rated. I reached out to the restaurant via email to make a reservation for a Friday. I wanted to get the earliest reservation possible, so the restaurant reserved me for 7:30pm, which was when they open. I was advised to show up on time - even a 2 minute delay would make me miss my reservation. I can see why Trattoria Mario was strict on reservations. They open on the dot, and then a staff member calls out each reservation at 7:30pm like a roll call. Seemed to me that if you don't have a reservation then you're out of luck, because there was no waitlist and the restaurant small and space was limited. Service was great. Our waitress was highly attentive and got us in/out of the restaurant quickly, which was what we were going for. Food came out in a timely manner. We ordered the penne al ragu, salad misto, and a Florentine steak to share. The penne was perfectly al dente, and I liked the meat sauce. I did find the pasta sauce salty, but it could've came from the grated parmesan. The saltiness was not a fluke. The Florentine steak was just pure beef and a ton of salt... too much salt for my liking. I also decided that I'm not a fan of Florentine steak in general.

Back in the…read morestates, I always get strange reactions from the waiters when I order my steak "as rare as possible." That is what I was expecting in Italy. Am I the only one that thought steak florentine was supposed to be served this way? Maybe that's was my mistake but I thought that's how it was prepared in Florence. Anyways, I was immediately suspicious when our waitress asked how we would like our steak cooked and her suggestions were medium or medium well. Uhhhh what? That goes against everything I believe in! The steak came out on a hot stone slab on top of a wooden box. The slab obviously continued to cook the steak so I immediately took off a few pieces to prevent this. The steak was thick and tender with chunks of large salt grains. It looked nice all sliced up but that's where the compliments end. It lacked flavor and ended up cooking to be more medium rare when I grabbed my pieces and then even medium by the time my dad grabbed his second slice. Our waitress seemed annoyed when we asked for the truffle sauce to accompany our steak (my dad forgot to ask for it when we placed our original order) and walked away with a huff to go grab it. The fries came out cold and limp with flavorless truffle shavings on top. I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews. Maybe it got too big for its britches and the quality has declined? The one saving grace was the crema bruciata! And the very understanding hostess who gladly pushed our reservation from 7:30 to 8:00pm due to travel difficulties. Whatever the reason, this place definitely missed the mark. You can't walk three steps without seeing a steakhouse here in Florence. My recommendation? Try one of those.

We also tried several appetizers, including roasted eggplant, roasted peppers, artichokes and the spinach-and-ricotta dumplings. And the fried zucchini was out of this world -- absolutely one of the highlights of the meal! For dinner, I had the sliced steak with aglio e olio, accompanied by roasted potatoes, carrots and rosemary. The steak was delicious and perfectly prepared. Jim had the cacio e pepe, and Tom had the seafood pasta. All three entrées were excellent. The wine list is enormous, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. Soldano Kunz d'Asburgo Lorena, from the Habsburg-Lorraine family behind La Giostra, is quite a personality. I shared two pasta dishes with my daughter (the handmade Pappardelle with Maremman Wild Boar Ragu and the Carbonara). Both were very good but not the best we've had. Appetizers were good: Salad with pecorino cheese, oranges, pine nuts and walnuts. We ordered the Octopus appetizer as well. The Octopus was beautifully prepared and presented, but didn't have much flavor. They nailed the Espresso Martini! One of the best I've ever had! We ordered the huge Florentine steak to share between 4 of us and it was more than enough. Ultimately what knocked this review down to 3 stars and what was really disappointing was how they targeted us as tourists with the note at the bottom of the bill (see picture). It read "GRATUITY NOT INCLUDED" in all CAPITAL LETTERS. Also note it was the only thing in English on the entire bill. If it had been our first meal in Florence we might have fallen for this tactic, however it was our last. There's definitely some hostility towards tourists in Florence. Don't get me wrong, some of the people and restaurants we've visited have been very welcoming and friendly. However we recently saw tourist taxes go up significantly, and then you see tricks like this on the bill at La Giostra. This was the ONLY restaurant in Florence where we encountered this. Once jet fuel prices make flying a relic of the past I would argue that some Europeans who depend on tourists for their livelihood may not miss our presence but will certainly miss our spending. Save your money and go research the many other places to eat while in Florence.
