This place is pretty solid! I wanted some take out and stumbled upon this place. When I walked in and didn't see razzle dazzle, I knew the food would be good . I got the sesame chicken and shrimp fried rice. I paid an extra $3 to get my rice as shrimp fried rice (sweet).! The quality of the chicken was good. I was able to taste the chicken, see the white meat, and not have crunchy stuff more than I have chicken.! My shrimp fried rice was pretty good. The quantity is what excited me the most. You're not getting gourmet food by any means but you get large portion sizes for the price, the wait isn't long, and the dishes are tasty! Oriental Kitchen is my go-to for ordering Chinese takeout on Christmas Eve... this was my third year in a row and I've had a great experience each time! I called to place my order around 6:45 pm and they had it ready for pick up in 25 minutes. FAST FACTS: * Parking: located in a shopping center so there's plenty of parking available in the lot in front of the building * Online ordering: available for pickup at the restaurant * Delivery: available through third-party (Grubhub, DoorDash, and Favor) * Closed on Mondays SERVICE - I've only ever ordered takeout but the workers taking my order over the phone and at the counter when I arrive have always been pleasant! PRICING - The total for a Triple Crown, General Tso's chicken, and an order of steamed veggie dumplings was $39.51 after tax. The portion sizes are huge so the pricing is very reasonable! STEAMED VEGGIE DUMPLING (7/10) - You get 8 dumplings in the order and it comes on a small bed of shredded cabbage with soy sauce for dipping. The dumplings were cooked well and were tasty... I'd order them again as a non-fried appetizer option! TRIPLE CROWN (8/10) - This is a great deal for what you get! It includes chicken, beef, and shrimp with assorted vegetables (zucchini, carrots, broccoli, and mushrooms) in a savory sauce with your choice of steamed, brown, or fried rice. The proteins were all cooked well and the veggies had a great texture... sometimes veggies in Chinese food are overcooked and mushy but these had a slight crunch to them which I loved! My only complaint is that there is a LOT of sauce so you have to fish out the meat and veggies. GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN (7/10) - This is a sweeter General Tso's.... there's no spice to it. The sauce coats the chicken pieces well but they aren't overly crispy and it would be better if it came with broccoli or another vegetable. But, it's a massive amount of chicken and also comes with your choice of steamed, brown, or fried rice. Oriental Kitchen is a great local option for Chinese takeout without breaking the bank! I can't understand why this has such great reviews. Everything we tried was a complete miss. The soups went uneaten and in the trash. The egg drop soup had no flavor and the texture was off-putting. I've never met a hot and sour soup I didn't like until now. It tasted like dirty dishwater! The Szechuan chicken had an odd aftertaste, fried rice was just okay, and General Tsao's chicken lacked flavor and tenderness. We were driving around looking for a place to eat and this little restaurant in the corner caught our attention. Once we saw the reviews we decided to stop by for lunch. It was pretty empty, only one other table occupied but it was late lunch. We were greeted right away and sat down instantly. The menu has a bit of everything. Let's just say it's not a restaurant and more take away place... yes they have large seating area which is half filled with boxes. We went there and were seated and sat there for 15 minutes, no one came to take order. Then food was served in to go containers. The old guy who did not speak English was trying to encourage my kid to eat his food. Which was nice probably if he wasn't pointing and TOUCHING his food. He also took our order and obviously there was lot of miscommunication involved. I requested for spicy sauce and he gave frozen prepacked sauce. The food was okey though. Ordered 4 dishes yesterday! Everything was enjoyed by everyone! The eggplant and garlic sauce is my youngest child's favorite and he could eat it every day. We got sautéed green beans with pork. The meat was plentiful, very tender, and the green beans had a great wok charred flavor. We also tried the sha cha beef, which was tender in flavorful. The sauce on this one is a little salty so it is a great one to eat with white rice. The star of the show was the basil fish. Even though it indicates that this is a spicy dish, it was not and enjoyed by both of my children as well. I would 100% get this every time we order from Oriental Kitchen. The food was ready when promised, and even after a 15 minute drive home it was piping hot. It was a generous quantity for a great price! This is now going to become our go to local Chinese restaurant. P.S. The only Issue I had was we wanted barbecue pork with noodles but the person on the phone said that the only way to get barbecue pork is with fried rice which we did not want. The service was was fine (called it in) and fast but the orange chicken tasted like general tso chicken and my Sha cha was really chicken with mixed vegetables and wasn't spicy at all. The servings they give are huge which was great; but huge and WRONG. Thankfully it still tasted good; just not what we ordered/expected. The egg drop soup was good and so were the egg rolls. Underwhelming is the keyword for this place. The pork fried rice was the best dish. The general tso's chicken didn't taste like any I have ever had. I wouldn't be able to describe its flavor profile, and would just call it a red-brown sauce. I haven't had Chinese donuts since I was a child and they were alright. Maybe nostalgia ruined them for me, as things seem to be better in memory. I have no complaints about the egg drop soup. It was familiar and comforting. The service was excellent. This is the best Chinese I've had in a REALLY long time. At least within the last few years or so. The service is amazing. I just cannot get enough of the great food, the great service, and the convenience in proximity to 35, as well as my neighborhood. Heading eastbound on Grand Avenue nestled in a small shopping center, if you blink you'd miss it. I have always been welcomed with warmth, a smile, and usually a joke. I echo what many have said on here but I think Oriental Kitchen deserves much more recognition for the work they did during the winter storm to help the elderly community with free meals, but also they truly have been hit hard by the pandemic to the point where they allow you to order but you sit down and have your food in to-go containers. The best part about that is I wouldn't be ok with it at ANY other Chinese food place in or around Austin. Something about the charm, the food is cooked with love. While this place has tons of veggie options, I wouldn't come if I were a strict vegetarian. Just because their dishes, portions, and flavors that contain some kind of protein- will outdo any veggie dish on the menu. Singapore noodles, general tso chicken, and the best damn Hot and Sour you will ever be served. You can't just get that anywhere. Be careful because cravings are extremely heightened on Mondays and Tuesdays which are the days they happen to be closed! So treat yourself to a HOT yummy meal over the weekend. NOT that I matters but I say this because I have come here a lot of times as just a customer and been treated fine. Well not today , the guy that was working the front desk was so rude to me, the order took forever and it was only fried rice and an egg roll. He yelled at me about someone coming into his restaurant like I worked there or something .. it was one of the worst customer experiences I have ever had. Went for lunch today. I seem to always think about trying this place on Mondays and Tuesdays when they are closed. Glad they are doing inside dining even though it is not true restaurant service due to not having enough workers. This is what the owner (I think) told me. You order and pay at the counter then they put it in a to go box and let you eat inside. This worked for me. I hate eating in my car. I wanted Mongolian Beef and the lady said to get the Szechuan Beef. Who knew it was basically the same thing. I thought it was very good and a large portion for lunch. I was not disappointed for the $33 I paid for two orders of beef and broccoli, hot and sour soup and an order of wings. The portions were so large that I actually just could've ordered one beef and broccoli to split between my wife and I. The hot and sour soup was some of the best I've ever had with large mushrooms swimming around. This place is located in a small strip center just off of Wells branch and it's easy to miss. We were referred to the Oriental Kitchen by a friend. My wife and I stopped in for lunch. It's in a small strip mall, plenty of parking and a nice basic little restaurant. I did look up the place on Yelp before going and the reviews were pretty good. My wife ordered the garlic shrimp with fried rice and I ordered the Vegetables with shrimp and steamed rice. My wife said here fried rice didn't taste right, I tasted it and it just tasted dry. The garlic shrimp was tasty. My dish, the veggies just had nothing to them, no flavor, just bland. I've had some very well prepared fresh veggies in different restaurants, this one just didn't do anything for me. The shrimp was ok, the best part of the meal was the steamed rice. The 3 stars was primarily for the service, the gentleman taking the order was very friendly. This is another place where the use of styrofoam and plastic has been carried over since COVID.
