My go to soup has always been hot and sour soup but my friend suggested the egg flower and I am glad We tried it. I think it is much more flavorful and water chestnut gives it an added touch. The food we ordered was tasty, affordable, with large portions. 1.Broccoli in Oyster sauce 8.5/10 very flavorful but the sauce was very watery 2.BBY Pork Fried Rice 8/10 there was a freshness missing that could have easily been fixed by adding some green onions 3. Quite a pleasant surprise! The food was exceptional. The waiter was polite and very nice. The soup portions are large even when you order a small, but it was some of the best soup I've had. It's one of my favorite places that I don't go to enough. As soon as I walk in and smell the inscents, I'm taken back to my childhood. Growing up, my house ALWAYS smelled of inscents and the style of food here is basically the same style of cooking as my mom & Grandma. It's a place where I can come for a taste of home when I'm missing my family's cooking. Lunch deals are good. The portions are large although somewhat stingy on the actual protein. At first glance my beef and broccoli lunch plate looked huge with the rice and fried wontons, but the ratio of beef to broccoli was off. Same with my friend's shrimp dish. The owners are from Vietnam, but they are of Chinese heritage. So between that and the lack of a lot of Vietnamese on the Monterey Peninsula to appreciate authentic food, the first page of the menu here has the Vietnamesee dishes, while the remaining 4 or 5 pages has standard Chinese dishes. On the Vietnamese side, they have Pho Tai and Pho Ga ($5.25sm, $5.95lg, $6.95xl), Hu Tieu and Mi noodle soups ($0.25 more than Pho each size). There are no options for balls, tripe and other beef cuts. . They also have Goi Cuon (2 spring rolls $4) and fried egg rolls, 2 Xao dishes (Pho and Hu Tieu) and 3 Bun dishes. No Com plates. They do offer Pearl drinks, though, and Thai Tea and Vietnamese Coffee. They served us with limes on the garnish plate, with basil and cilantro, and sprouts and chilis. The Goi Cuon came with a dark peanut sauce, but I was expecting the sweet/hot Nuoc Mam fish sauce. The Hu Tieu was not served with the crispy pork, just Chinese style red colored slices, and lots of fake crab. The Pho was ok, as the two eating it enjoyed the Pho Tai. The Pho Xao (sauted flat rice noodles) with pork seemed OK, but was enjoyed. Three of the diners in our party had limited knowledge and experience in Vietnamese food, as I suspect most customers, so they enjoyed the food despite it being not that great for Authentic Vietnamese. It is not San Jose, Westminster, San Diego or even Seattle, but the only other Vietnamese noodle place on the Monterey Peninsula I am aware of is not as good as this place. So if you are down here and need a Pho Fix, this is your best shot! read more

This is fairly close to the definition of a hole in the wall joint, and as a weeknight find, it was a pleasant surprise to us. The food was hot and reasonably tasty, quite plentiful, and while not particularly on the high end for inventiveness or special flavors, nothing was in that frequently-questionable texture/taste/ingredients area one often gets with Pan-Asian food. (I won't call it "Cuisine" this restaurant is not up to the vocabulary word.) On the plus side, the service was fast and so was the cooking from the kitchen, although there was only one other party there when we ordered, to be sure. And they handled the junior members of our party with plenty of aplomb. On the downside. The menu needs to be trimmed down, and there weren't a lot of vegetarian-only options, and I suspect a little MSG was in at least one of our dishes. Rice wasn't offered or delivered with the meal (I'm sure it's available as a side but it was too late for us). And I think the prices are a little on the high side, relative to the area and for the quality of the ingredients (it was no cheaper than the superb Tommy's Wok in Carmel, which absolutely sets the standard for Asian take-out-style food in the area, but which is too far from us for regular patronage). All in all I'd recommend it - if you want quick, plentiful, hearty Asian comfort food in a very low-key sit down environment without worrying about whether your socks are matching, this is the place. read more

Our usual favorite is the Vietnamese shrimp pork fresh roll, shrimp lobster sauce, combo fried rice with big shrimp, mandarin chicken with sauce and bone, shrimp soup. The pho is rich and flavorful without that thick, oily film that haunts your palate, and the portion per price is quite decent. Many restaurants make the mistake of overly salty broth and MSG'd entrees, but the food here is punchy and fresh without shortcuts. Nearly 90% of the clientele are returning customers, and while this place doesn't have a wide customer base such as the highly rated noodle bars nearby, my family and friends all repeated choose this restaurant as their pho station. I think this says a lot more than the prominently located pho shops visited by teens and tourists in town. The pho is always excellent, the Saigon noodle soup is a seafood delight, the calamari salad well balanced between sweet-savory-sour, and the dry mandarin chicken is a crispy renaissance reminiscent of Korean paper fried chicken. Try their egg fried rice or their mushu chicken if you want to venture more into the Chinese cuisine. Family friendly, good for small or large groups, and a solid place for a hot, brothy meal. It's usually packed around dinner time so try their lunch times if you want to skip the crowd. read more

Five stars all the way, baby! Stopped in twice this week for a lovely noodle bowl, post-workout meal. Service was very good. First trip in we came during their break (between 230 and 500) and they still let us come in, which I really appreciated. Bonus points for that! My mom and I ordered the Lettuce and Eggroll Noodle bowls. Absolutely wonderful! Glass noodles heaped over lettuce with crispy vegetable egg rolls, topped with basil, cilantro and mint sprigs. Comes with a sweet 'n spicy sauce to pour over the noodles. So aromatic and the flavor combinations in this medley are out of this world! Second time in, you guessed it, we ordered the same thing! I also had the coffee pearl drink and on the second trip tried the avocado pearl drink. Both were very good. There is hoisan sauce, siracha sauce and soy sauce at your disposal. It was only a couple of months ago that I discovered The Orient. Despite recommendations from friends to try this place out more than a year ago, I never seemed to make it over to this shop hidden off the beaten path in Seaside. Now, this is my go-to stop for Chinese food. My favorite dish on the menu is mu shu chicken--I literally order this every time I'm here. (Come to think of it, I order this any time I'm at a Chinese restaurant.) The mu shu chicken at The Orient is mighty tasty, made with lots of veggies, fluffy fried egg and chicken. One bite of mu shu wrapped up in one of those delicate pancakes with some hoisin and I'm in heaven. (I've also tried the pork mu shu and mysteriously, it's not as good as the chicken mu shu. It's a mystery of the universe.) The dry Mandarin chicken is another must-order whenever I go to The Orient. It's crispy and spicy, really just fried chicken wings tossed with dried chile flakes and garlic. Can you really go wrong with that? And if you're not in the mood to work for your meal or just don't want to eat meat off the bone, you can also order this dish boneless. Last time I went, I also tried the chicken chow mein. It was decent, but honestly nothing to write home about. I think it suffered from getting consumed after the flavorful mu shu and Mandarin chicken--it just paled in comparison to these dishes. It's also a little disappointing that The Orient doesn't have potstickers on their menu, but I do appreciate that they have steamed bao (buns). (And I'm even willing to ignore my suspicions that these aren't housemade bao.) I'm looking forward to working my way through more of the menu at The Orient. And I'm happy to see I'm not limited to just Chinese food--The Orient also offers a selection of Vietnamese fare on their menu, including pho noodle soups and dry noodle bowls. read more

Awesome service! Try their spicy chicken. It's to die for! This is a small restaurant. It is family owned and operated. Their food is good. I tend to go for the usual dish which is the spicy chicken. They offer some Vietnamese disshes and some chinese dishes. They also offer their pearl drinks which are made in house! This place is a diamond in the rough. It is kind of tucked away next to a gas station but it has become one of my favorite spots. They are closest to traditional Korean compared to all other spots around here. I love getting their stone pot dishes, particularly seafood or kimchi and the hosts are great bringing all the sides to the table and refilling. It is clear they know what they are doing. Decent Vietnamese food, more authentic than anywhere else in Monterey. How do I know? Well I tried almost all of them during my 4 day visit. Prices are decent too, parking is easy to find as there's a whole parking lot available for your use. We had the Bun Rieu, the WonTon soup and enjoyed their fresh rolls. The Bun Rieu was flavorful and had lots of crab meat in it. The WonTon soup was okay, my mom liked the egg noodles it came with. The fresh rolls were decent. Consistently good and tasty Pho place in Seaside. The broth is excellent and the service is nice and homey. I wish they were open on Sundays or Mondays as I usually crave this food on those days. I see people leaving bad reviews concerning delivery issues. What's up with that? Blame the delivery service if it arrives cold. Hot soup is best when ordered in the restaurant anyway. Service was good. Restaurant was clean and accommodating to COVID restrictions when picking up food. I was told it would be 45 mins, so I showed up around 35 mins. Food was cold. Absolutely flavorless and disgusting. Every thing looked and tasted microwaved, soggy or stale. The sweet and sour sauce was very watered down. Went to Orient Restaurant for dinner and ordered takeout. It is located in a small strip mall on Fremont right by Little Cesar's. Customer service was friendly. I ordered chicken with broccoli and wonton soup. The soup was super flavorful, with a depth of flavor and strong herb taste (maybe cilantro). Delicious. However, the chicken broccoli, which came with a side of rice, left a lot to be desired. The flavor was bland and could've used more seasoning. The meat to broccoli ratio was also very off, more broccoli than chicken. Had this been better seasoned I'd have enjoyed it so much more. read more

The Orient resturant in Seaside California is a smaller Chinese establishment. Because of its smaller size the atmosphere was pleasantly quiet. I was first attracted to its surprisingly positive reviews, it drove me to the door. I was not displeased with the overall experience I had. The food was pleasant and the portions acceptable. It is not exactly suited for larger families but they accommodated my family easily since it was close to closing time. A 15% service charge was added to our bill and any other group of five or more. The building could use a paint touch up and a little more decor. It could also use additional advertising and street signs. I had a hard time finding it amongst the three or more other Asian cuisine locations adjacent to it. Overall a great place to go for tasty Chinese. May not be best for a first date but not a bad place if you both like chinese. read more

I give 5 stars (unusual for me) for the 20+ years we've been visiting The Orient, sometimes on a weekly basis during the winters. Their chicken noodles soup is the best ever and is the perfect cure anytime you feel a cold bug coming. We have always left very full and happy with their food. I'm sorry to say we've heard rumors from other patrons that this family is close to retiring in the next few years, similar to what happened to our beloved Thai Bistro II. That'll be a sad day for us. For the longest time, we didn't actually know the name of this restaurant and simply called it "Foe". He loves their pho ga (their chicken broth is magical), and I used to order pho tai (beef) or cold rice-vermicelli noodles with salad (I prefer pork with added crushed egg rolls). The Orient is hands-down way better than other noodle dishes around the peninsula and remains very reasonably priced for their generous servings. We really didn't try much else, except for their imperial rolls (fresh, rice paper wrapped rolls with shrimp, pork, rice noodles, and lettuce, served with peanut sauce), fried egg rolls, or the occasional lunch special. And then, one time, I looked around and saw other people's orders which didn't include the noodle dishes. I have no problem asking people what they ordered (he gets a bit embarrassed, but it's proven very useful). This discovery changed our experience of The Orient ever since. Our regular favorites: chicken noodles soup (obviously; it comes with a side of bean sprouts, Thai basil, cilantro, jalapeno, and lime), egg rolls with the request of hot mustard (oh man, clear out your sinuses in such a quick burning way), dry Mandarin chicken, bone-in (the saucy is also very tasty), catfish stew pots (perfectly cooked in a hot clay pot; I prefer the basic, but braised and black bean are also yummy), and mu-shu chicken (I wish it came with more than 4 pancakes; thanks, Raúl Nava, for your old yelp reviews). I make sure to ask for a bowl of rice, but I've never been charged for a side dish. Oh, one last word... since we often drive over to Seaside through evening traffic for the sole reason to have The Orient's chicken soup, we've been disappointed to discover they're closed on both Sunday and Monday. After all these years when we're seriously craving pho, we still can't remember when they're closed. As I was writing this, I discovered I could submit a request to Yelp to correct their open hours; surprisingly, it worked fairly quickly.
