Picky toddler chowing down on golden split pea soup!
    Emily F.

We are so grateful to have learned about organic soup kitchen from a friend! Not only do they have an amazing mission to make nutritious food for those battling illness, but the broader community can also enjoy their incredible soups as well! We have a very picky toddler who is hard to get hearty healthy food into, but organic soup kitchen soups he loves!! I am so thankful to have found a healthy food that fills up my boy with lots of fabulous nutrients and don't have to worry about what other additional ingredients are in it. He isn't the only one who loves it, my husband and I are both fans as well!! Split pea, white bean and kale, and the coconut curry lentil are the family favorites! Our one year old is also a big fan of the tomato and wild rice which we switch off serving as soup or using as a thick sauce for pasta for him!

#ThankYouThursday Review: Given that today is Thank You Thursday, I thankfully didn't have to search far and wide for amazing, local businesses that make a difference in our community. There are soooo many places that come to mind, yet I wanted to choose one in particular that stands out and deserves recognition: Organic Soup Kitchen (OSK). Somehow the secret about these Souper Heros hasn't yet spread--so here's to hoping more folks throughout Santa Barbara County learning about their stellar work and dedication! OSK is an outstanding 'soup kitchen' that focuses on providing those facing cancer, chronic illness, or financial hardship with nutritious, organic soup meals. Research has shown that good nutrition plays an important role in health and recovery. Since 2009, OSK has collaborated with leading oncologists to create recipes that promote healing, increase energy, and strengthen the immune system. Per OSK's website: "Each batch is handcrafted with organic whole foods, healthy fats, and oils and medicinal quality herbs and spices. No additives or preservatives ever. It's healing from the inside out." Once their souper products are made batch by batch, they are delivered each week on Wednesdays between 9am-2pm to towns throughout Santa Barbara County (currently serving Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Summerland, Goleta and the Santa Ynez Valley.) They offer some delicious soups, including: Coconut Curry Lentil, Cowgirl Chili, Creamy Potato and Kale (vegan), Gourmet Broccoli, Roasted Butternut Squash, Roasted Tomato & Squash, Rustic Split Pea, Simply Heirloom Tomato, Tuscan White Bean & Kale, Mushroom & Kale, and Napoli Marinara Sauce for pasta. They also have SoupMeals consisting of: Detox Weight Loss Soup, Ginger & Turmeric Chicken Broth, Italian Beef Stew, Old Fashioned Chicken Soup, Specialty Cowboy Chili, and Traditional Turkey Stew. Not to mention, they sell gift certificates and also a wholesale marketplace. Here's more amazing characteristics that ALL their soups take into account: - Infused with the highest quality herbs and spices, fats, organic vegetables, and coconut milk to provide optimal nutritional intake. - Semi-pureed, low-acidity meals complemented with filtered water to hydrate the system and ease digestion for clients with dysphagia. - No preservatives, fillers, or artificial flavorings. 100% organic, non-radiated herbs, and spices to maintain their healing properties. - Hermetically sealed in BPA-free packaging - available in 24 oz (3 servings), 32 oz (4 servings), or 1 Gallon (16 servings). How does this affect me? What can I do to help? Well, ANYONE can purchase their delicious soup from their kitchen located in the Antioch University parking garage at 608 Anacapa (it is a bit hidden so look at the map image attached to this review). For every soup you buy at cost, one soup is donated to someone in-need from our community. As with most non-profit organizations, if you have the financial needs you can also take it a step further by becoming a SouperHero by making a monthly donation. As for me, not only have I purchased soup for my family (hence donating soup for others), I also have my Amazon Prime account attached to OSK through Amazon Smile so a portion of my Amazon purchases are donated to them at the end of each year. No better way to support local! THANK YOU ORGANIC SOUP KITCHEN!

A side note: real silverware and plates/bowls are offered only if you dine inside the restaurant's premises. Since we opted to sit in the general area, our orders were prepared as a to-go set. After browsing through their menu, we chose the following dishes: Beef Pho: The broth was quite savory, tangy, and a tad sweet. The thin rice noodles were slightly soft. The filet mignon slices were tender, and the beef balls had good texture. The sauce and bean sprots were given on the side. Bangkok Street Noodle: The broth was flavorful, spicy, and quite tangy. The thin noodles had a balanced firmness. There was a nice blend of sliced BBQ pork, minced meat, meatballs, and fried wontons, then garnished with chili, cilantro and green onion on top. Shrimp Summer Roll: The rice paper wrap had a pleasant chewy texture. The ingredients were super fresh and satisfyingly crunchy. The tanginess of the mango and cucumber went well with slightly sweet hoisin style sauce. The mint provided a quite refreshing taste and aroma to the rolls. A beautiful fusion of colorful visual presentation and exquisite taste. Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal. Highly recommended.

Got seated pretty quickly, where there are various heaters to ensure comfort. Drinks were served pretty quickly. Ordered the Black Ramen (made with Black Garlic Oil) for 19.50, solid price. I enjoy the choices of meat that you can choose from, which I chose Pork Belly, and added an egg to mine. Didn't take too long for the food to come out, everything was really fresh and tasted well. The pork belly was a nice chunk too (I had expected it was going to be smaller). The broth was very delicious, which I killed the entire bowl. With the check, they also give mini Hi-Chews. We tried the black garlic ramen with chashu. It was just ok. The chashu did not have the melt in your mouth texture which is the payoff for clogged arteries. We had the chicken karage. Again, just ok, and a bit dry and stringy. We also ordered a cucumber roll. It was the sloppiest sushi roll we've ever seen. First off it was the big, kimbab size roll, but cut super skinny. So you had to bite off half of it. Which meant all the insides fall out. It was rolled so loose, that you could literally see through it. The chef didn't even bother not serving the messy end pieces, so it looked even more sloppy on the plate. All in all, there is hardly any craft in the ramen. The other dishes are mediocre, and the sushi rolls are amateurish at best.

We had a fantastic server (Cathy) who took our orders and was very friendly. The front staff was quite rude when we followed up what the wait time was (might have been because it was busy, but hope that it's a 1x thing and not a pattern). Otherwise, vibes we're very good and I can see why this is a popular spot.

Rice side was okay and egg roll was okay. Fried wonton was tasty. Soup was okay. Overall, I have had much better quality lunch specials at Chinese restaurants. Food was a bit below average in taste and quality. The lunch special price was cheaper than average for California. There were Chinese customers dining and I noticed they were not getting the lunch special. I was only given the lunch special menu so I guess they assume that if you are not Chinese you are going to order the lunch special?

I ordered the Jajangmyeon noodle dish at the register and took a seat. It came with a dish of yellow radish. The Jajangmyeon had julienned cucumber on top. The sauce for this dish is supposed to be thick. Unfortunately, I was served a version that was very thin and oily. The sauce had tiny pieces of diced overcooked pork and a just a small pieces of zucchini. Other than that the rest was slices of blackened onions. The cost was also expensive at $15.95 before tax. This was the most I have ever paid for this dish and the quality was inferior and there wasn't enough veggies in the sauce. Between the pork and zucchini, I estimate it was less than a 1/4 cup. So essentially the dish was mainly noodles in with a sauce filled with onions.
