It is cleaner, more organized, but you still can spot some merchandise left over from Random (frankly more interesting) and it has the Random vibes. The Unity Shoppe is a fun thrift store based business. What they offer is a whole lot of a whole lot of everything. They have a vast selection of clothing, jewelry, trinkets, tchotchkes, music, books, pretty much you name it and they've got it. In terms of their overall shopping experience, what you find here is pretty much the best of the best of used items. Thus, in some cases, their prices tend to be a bit high, compared to what you might find at your average thrift shop. This being said, again, a lot of the less than perfect items are weeded out, so you're not going to have to work your way through that type of inventory to find what you're really looking for. The shop is very well organized, and easy to navigate. The staff here are all really nice. So, you can be sure to have an enjoyable shopping experience. Located right on State Street, this business is very easy to find. A few days ago, I moved into a new place, and decided to drop off some belongings at the Unity Shoppe. In the bustle of a chaotic move, I realized that I may have accidentally donated my toiletries bag, with all my medication. I returned to the Unity Shoppe in tears, begging to go through my donated items. The staff was exceptionally kind, combing through all donations with me and assuring me that we would find my bag. I highly recommend donating unwanted items here - the staff genuinely cares about the local community. At the end of the day, my bag was in my bathroom the entire time. read more

In 2002 I arranged the gift program for my low-income residents. The one thing that has always stuck in my mind when I first met Jan at the Unity Shoppe is; John she said "We try not to give anyone what they don't want". The unity shop has really cleaned up their active for the years! It's always been a great go to for awesome charitable guides but they have really done excellent merchandise display, I have organized things very well, and have a lovely selection of everything from new tiff InTouch items available. Their prices well although not the lowest, support a good cause and because of their likely extraordinarily high rent to be on State Street downtown, it's understandable that their prices are not thrift store level. However I was able to find many awesome deals on everything from very current There are now several storefronts to next to each other on State Street and I believe still one additional location, again they are clean neat bright well organized almost nothing is out of place... They have some very fine antiques, all kinds of jewelry it's really very extensive and well thought out compared to years before.fashionable clothing to mid century modern vintage and other awesome furniture, trinkets knickknacks gifts galore, luggage a lot of brand new items that have been donated from local companies and a lot of things brand new with tags so if you are a reseller of items or interested in trying things out and still being able to turn them over if they're not quite right for you, it's still within the range of reasonable pricing to do so in my opinion. Definitely worth a stop in and if you're looking to furnish a new apartment or find something fun and new to you if you're into buying things that are pre-loved or may still have the tags on them anyway, it's a great place to go as most of the other charity shops like it has been moved to Goleta and they have really capitalized on taking over some shop spaces that were not being as well utilized. This is a wonderful corporation that provides everything from clothing to food to toys to housewares, etc. for the homeless or needy population. My daughter's school (Dos Pueblos) did a food and clothing drive, and then a spare change and toy drive over the holidays, to benefit the Unity Shoppe. I wasn't able to get all of my items together in time, so I went to the unity shoppe itself and made a large donation of clothing (especially heavy jackets) and kitchen ware. I was truly impressed with the efficiency inside the shop. I've been to many thrift stores, but this was a cross between a house with a kitchen and a small little clothing store. It was so much more inviting than the norm. This nonprofit benefits the local population tremendously. I especially love how much attention they pay to needy children. Being a child who is homeless must be horribly scary. Getting toys for Christmas and new clothing and food is considered a luxury for them, and it's something most of us take for granted. If you can donate to this organization, your money and items will be greatly appreciated. They only take gently used, in good condition items! This way they can give something of quality to those who need it. Their store is easy to get to on Chapala Street in downtown Santa Barbara. There's parking right outside and you can get a receipt for a tax donation. I haven't looked into volunteering yet, but I'm sure they could always use help. read more

So this whole Unity Shoppe thing... do you get it? Do you know who they are? What they do? Apparently most people don't. Do you assume that they are another welfare place that passes out food to the homeless? Maybe you think that they are that organization that is constantly asking for money! I went on a tour on Sunday, they had what they called a "Chicken run" to stock up on chickens. It was fun but more than that it was enlightening. What I learned is that the Unity Shoppe helps people get back on their feet with dignity. It is not an organization that enables people, rather an organization that helps people when they need help the most. Think fire victims, think productive members of our community that have lost their jobs, their homes and perhaps some of their self respect. Did you know that the average person who goes to the Unity Shoppe only goes for help 6.5 times? Did you know that they have a team of carpenters who make 100s of the most beautiful toys for kids. Wooden cars or wheelbarrows for the boys, cribs for the girls. Did you know that there is a team of retired women who knit blankets and doll clothes to go with each crib? Did you know that they give interview training or that they give clothes to people so that they can look good when they go on interviews, clothes that are appropriate to whatever type of interview they will be doing? Did you know that they go to Vegas every August (in the 120 degree heat) to buy thousands of dollars of kids clothes, backpacks and school supplies to give to children? And that they buy them for pennies on the dollar!? That they have elderly care? That they work with 100s of other local organzations (hence the name "Unity" Shoppe. ) That about 20 staff members coordinate thousands of volunteers? Or that they are the ONLY organization of it's kind in the country? Maybe you should trot on down and check them out!!! Perhaps get five or six of your friends with giving hearts and ask for a tour! They would be happy to show you what they are doing and how they do it. It is an amazing and enlightening experience! They just moved into a wonderful new building that will be able to serve their needs for many years to come. They can ALWAYS use donations. The two hundred or so chickens that we donated....might have them covered for a couple of days. They do THAT MUCH GOOD! And they will promise that any cash donation that you give them, they will leverage, sometimes ten fold! Five stars all the way!!! read more

This place is full of treasures. I love old things whether they're actual antiques or not. The fact that these things have history with others makes them valuable to me. First of all, it's hard for me to point out what they have because it seems like they're nothing they wouldn't carry. They accept donations of anything from anyone so that they could sell these things to lower income families for cheap. And let me tell you, this place is cheap. I for one bought a wooden backgammon set/case from '96 with all the pieces and two dice shakers for $14. In great shape and good hefty quality. After buying that, I had to wait outside for the rest of the fam and I sat on an extremely soft, comfortable chair they had out in front. The worker (who happened to be of Armenian decent, yay!) told me that comfy-ass chair was only $25. I think I would have bought it just for the hell of it if I had a way to bring it back to Glendale. I'm definitely going to stop by here every time I'm in SB just to see new things that they'll surely have. read more

They help low income families with dignity and a desire to provide them with the items that the people in need want. rather than give the folk is need a bag of items they actually get to go into an area set up as a real store and choose what they need. I used to get help when I was a young mother with two little girls. it was so awesome at Christmas to take them in to pick a Christmas present. Now they are all grown up and I want to give back. The ladies who work here are all so sweet. I used to go in all the time when they were located next to my work but changing locations won't stop me from stopping in from time to time.
